Individuals give the most to charity

According to Giving USA, 72 percent of all U.S. charitable giving comes from individuals. Only 6 percent of charitable giving in the United States comes from corporations, and an additional 15 percent comes from foundations. Those who are happy with the nonprofit’s efforts are likely to give between 10 and 12 percent more in individual donations if they are provided with what they need from the charity. Charities that fully disclose how donations are being used are likely to see bigger retention rates than those that don’t.

Did you know?

Though there is no official data that declares the bestselling holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005).

Still time to score good deals on gifts

Online shopping has expanded considerably in the last several years. Although Black Friday and its online counterpart, Cyber Monday, may seem like the best times to gain the lowest prices on merchandise, it actually could pay to wait a little longer. Merchants may offer deep discounts on premium items that haven’t moved during the last days of the holiday shopping season, typically between December 21 and 24. This includes big-ticket products, such as fine jewelry, furniture and televisions. It is possible to take advantage of deep price cuts the closer you get to Christmas Day. Keep in mind that you may have to pay a premium for getting those gifts delivered on time, which could offset the savings. Therefore, it might be a wise idea to present gift recipients with a photo of what they will be getting for the holidays and deliver the item a day or two later.

With thanks and appreciation for all of my friends and clients!

Max makes a great name for a new dog

If you are welcoming a new dog to the family but have yet to pick a name, you might want to consider “Max.” Max has been a popular name for male dogs in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia on and off for years, many times topping the list as the most popular male dog name. Although names that described dog’s traits, such as Spotty or Dusty, were popular more than 50 years ago, today’s dogs (and cats) have decidedly human names.

The Rockefeller tree tradition

The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected in 1931, two years before the opening of Rockefeller Plaza, where the tree now draws thousands of tourists each year. The tradition began when construction workers hard at work on building Rockefeller Center decorated a roughly 20-foot tall balsam fir tree on Christmas Eve in 1931. Strings of cranberries and tin cans were among the items used to decorate the tree. While there was no tree in 1932, the first official tree was unveiled in 1933 in Rockefeller Plaza, and the lighting ceremony was broadcast over NBC Radio.

38 percent report never making a New Year’s Resolution

According to a 2014 study from researchers at the University of Scranton, just 45 percent of Americans admit to routinely making New Year’s resolutions. The study also showed that an additional 38 percent of Americans acknowledged they never make New Year’s resolutions. Among the former group, self improvement or educationrelated resolutions were most popular, followed by weight resolutions. The study also found that resolutions tend to be less successful as a person ages. While 39 percent of survey participants in their twenties reported achieving their resolutions each year, those in their fifties reported a success rate of just 14 percent. Time also seems to be against resolutions, as just 46 percent of respondents reported maintaining their resolutions for more than six months.

Christmas Greetings • 13C Nativities on display at Fellowship Baptist

www.crossville-chronicle.com • Friday, December 19, 2014

If you want to refresh your memory of what Christmas is really all about, visit the nativity collection set up in the library of Fellowship Baptist Church, 12 Westminster Court. Admission is free. Viewing hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon (CST) and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., during the entire month of December. To arrange a private viewing time for groups, call 931-456-2525 to make arrangements.

The collection is diverse, with nativities ranging from one inch to over three feet tall, from numbered collector nativities to flea market purchases; from an antique candle wax nativity to a painting by a local artist. There are “touchable” ones made from cloth and from plastic that are safe for children to play with. There are around 150 in all and no two are exactly alike. Any questions, call the church at (931) 456-2525.

Christmas traditions have long history

Many Christmas traditions are older than some celebrants might think. The tradition of lighting up a Christmas tree, for example, dates back to the days before Christmas lights. Before electric-powered twinkle lights were invented and even before electricity was discovered, people used actual candles to adorn the Christmas tree. As one can imagine, having an open flame next to a driedout tree was risky, so it was customary to keep a bucket of water next to the tree in the case of fire. As if fire wasn’t enough, the tinsel used to decorate trees was made from strips of silver and even lead -- something that is now known to be a health hazard to adults and children alike. One Christmas staple that has lost its status as a safety hazard is the poinsettia plant. While there is some toxicity to the plant, it would require the ingestion of hundreds of leaves to get a toxic dose of a plant’s poison.

With warmest wishes & heart f elt thanks to my friends & customers. May you have all the blessings of this Christmas Season & A happy and healthy New Year! Office 931-707-2100 Cell 931-335-7653 bernicep@citlink.net www.bernicepolizzotto.com

Rejoicing in the blessings of the year ‘Tis the week before Christmas, Can’t believe that it’s here I’ve been working so hard for almost a year I had heard about Habitat Thought I’d give it a try I filled out the papers and then wondered why. I had not held a hammer A screwdriver or drills Could a klutz such as I acquire those skills? Sweat equity hours Five hundred they say They’ve got to be kidding. There’s

simply no way! Add fifty more hours For self-improvement and such. They don’t seem to hear when I say it’s too much. They assigned me two partners. (They were great from the start.) To tally my hours and not let me lose heart. Friends and family pitched in My church buddies did too And sweat equity hours began to acrue.

The dedication was grant! With tears in my eyes and the keys in my hand! I’m about to put up My first Christmas tree In a home that belongs to my family and me. So as Christmas approaches And God’s gift we proclaim I rejoice in what Habitat does in His name. —Sue Armstrong Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer

The man behind the beard Every Christmas Eve, children go to bed eagerly anticipating a visit from Santa Claus. This merry gentleman is purported to visit the home of every good girl and boy, delivering gifts and cheer along the way. Before the modern evolution of Santa Claus lived a very real and generous individual named Nicholas. In the third century, Nicholas served as the Bishop of Myrna in present-day Turkey. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, believing that giving should be done secretly and sacrificially in Jesus Christ’s name rather than one’s own. Stories tell of Nicholas paying the dowry for poor daughters to enable them to get married. He reportedly put coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him. It is believed Nicholas helped to restore the hope of hundreds of people in his community, making him a beloved and revered Bishop. Throughout his ministry, Nicholas fervently shared his life and fortune with others. Nicholas continued to be revered and commemorated by many Christians even after his death. His charity and unselfish works helped

inspire generations of the faithful, and he eventually was named the patron saint of everyone from merchants to sailors to pawnbrokers. No one really knows what St. Nicholas looked like. But in 2005, a forensic laboratory in England reviewed historical data and photographs

of the remains taken from St. Nicholas’ grave in the 1950s. Researchers concluded that he was a small man, perhaps no more than five feet in height, with a broken nose. This image certainly does not fit with the robust frame and other imagery awarded St. Nicholas in more modern years. St.

Nicholas is believed to be the inspiration for Santa Claus, which was a name taken from the Dutch Sinterklaas, a contracted form of Sint Nicolass, or St. Nicholas. Tales of the real St. Nicholas’ giving spirit were blended with a fictional personification by New York-based newspaper writers who blended the St. Nicholas name with the appearance of a Dutch town citizen. The goal was to reach out to the primarily Dutch immigrants living in New York at the time. This jolly elf image was given a boost by the publication of “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” which was published around the same time. Eventually, the merry Santa Claus portrayal began to outshine the more accurate St. Nicholas version as a religious man, fostered by political drawings and caricatures that depicted Santa as a chubby sort in a red suit. That image prevails to this day. Beneath the Christmas symbolism, the beard and the presents associated with Santa Claus lies a tale of generosity that originated with St. Nicholas.

he holiday season is all about making fun memories. Why not wear something no one will soon forget at your own ugly sweater party? Hosting one is simple — have everyone show up in the tackiest holiday apparel they can find, whether from their closet, at a thrift store or something they “blinged” on their own. With the party attire planned, try these easy and ugly dessert ideas from Wilton: n Soft, sweet and so ugly cakes: If your guests’ apparel doesn’t grab attention, your cake sure will. Use the Ugly Sweater Cake Pan to bake the cake. Style the decorating after your own garment — use buttercream or fondant, holiday-shaped sprinkles and icing decorations to add some ugly to your cake. n Cookie decorating fun: Bring the classic seasonal activity to your party by having guests decorate their own sweater cookies. Set up a decorating station with the Tacky Sweater Cookie Kit. With 12 pre-baked vanilla cookies, a dozen of your friends can have a blast decorating with the included green and red icing and sprinkles. Set up a photo station so guests can take pictures of their silly cookies to share online. n Warm up with lattes: Who doesn’t love sipping hot beverages by a warm fire with friends? Brew delicious Spirit of the Season Mocha Lattes to toast a merry Christmas. Offer assorted liqueurs for an adults-only party. n It’s time to judge: At the end of the party, hold a contest for the ugliest sweater — both real and cookie. Award winners in different categories, such as AllAround Ugliest, Most Original, Funniest, Most NonUgly or Most Ridiculous. Get creative with the prizes, too. Find an inexpensive and unique white elephant gift, or hand out little first place ribbons. Your party will be one to remember with these ideas.
