Father's Day and Year 12 exams

W

HEN I STUDIED my Higher School Certificate, I did so under the everwatchful eyes of an old brown owl.

The ugly painting also saw my dad through his high school, PE teaching diploma and later, with two toddlers underfoot, his BA. John Auld was the first of his family to achieve a tertiary qualification - that owl meant a lot to Dad, fifty years before they were in vogue as a décor item.

He made sure that the eerie, old owl resided with each of my three siblings as we encountered our toughest secondary years.

Dad and Mum never told us to "hit the books" but each of us knew that owl was waiting!

When I moved to university, the bird dutifully watched over my brother. But Dad farewelled me with my very own pint-sized (and much more handsome) brown owl.

In his letters, he would gently remind me to "keep your eye on the owl".

I am sure our Poppy John is smiling in heaven, knowing that he

created a tradition: my little owl now sits on our eldest's desk.

APTAIN ANDREW POWELL has this cheeky message for the Captain and team of the opposing eleven in Maleny’s upcoming Annual Charity Cricket Match.

“There seems to be some chatter around the place that me and my ‘Celebrity XI’ have fairly limited skills in the game of cricket.

“I would just like to state for the record that we decided when this match idea was first launched in 2010 that it would only be fair that we let the Maulers win for the first few years – as a gesture of goodwill and charity.

“Let me tell you, that gesture of friendliness ends this year. Things are getting serious and my team will be bringing their ‘A’ Game to this year’s match. Simon Denver and his motley Maulers better watch out.”

Now into its fifth year, on September 26 at noon the challenge is on once more for Captain Powell to wrest the infamous Golden Thong Trophy from Captain Denver’s grasp.

Countered Simon “I don’t think Powelly has got a hope in hell – not if he leads the same bunch as he did last year onto the Aub Cork Oval!”

This gladiatorial event sees the two fiercely competitive captains and their teams (Andrew Powell’s Celebrity Eleven and Simon Denver's Maleny Maulers) battle it out at the Maleny Showgrounds.

With theatre personalities, locals and politicians mixing it in the middle, a running commentary from Hot 91’s Sam Coward, and all players wearing their pajamas, entertainment as well as some good cricket is guaranteed.

The day has a more serious side, raising money for the Lung Foundation Australia (http:// lungfoundation.com.au/) in memory and support of Maleny's Dr Peter Oliver, who died of lung cancer.

Tragically, his wife Ann died of the same disease. Neither smoked a cigarette.

Kerrie Callaghan from the Lung Cancer Network Australia said, “Your fundraiser is the longest perpetual fundraiser that we have been privileged to be involved with.”

This year, Annual Charity Cricket Captain Andrew Powell is determined to secure that elusive golden thong trophy, he tells Captain Simon Denver that “We will ‘let you win’ no more!”

Raising dollars to fund campaigns to make people aware of this is important, allowing the LFA to work on removing so much of the stigma attached to one of Australia’s biggest killers.

Daylily

The love of gardening and a neighbourly gesture thirty-eight years ago introduced teacher Scott Alexander to the intriguing world of daylilies. From creating a nursery, surviving the global financial crisis, and supplying thousands of edible buds to a famous restaurateur, Gay Liddington went to hear the story unfold about the “Daylily Man”.

“W

E MOVED TO Yarraman, a little town south of Kingaroy. I was creating a cottage garden and a neighbour came over with a couple of plants. She told me I had everything in the garden except daylilies.

“That was the beginning. Slowly the collection built up and I started importing from America,” said Scott.

The idea of one day growing daylilies on a larger scale enticed Scott to purchase a block of land in McCarthy Road, Maleny in 1981. A few years later he moved to the area with his stock of around two hundred varieties.

Scott was a remedial resource teacher who travelled to primary schools in the area advising on children with learning difficulties.

“I had an eye problem develop and went into early retirement. And so, by 1986 at the age of forty-five, I was a retired teacher.

“By that time I had started a daylily nursery and was able to carry on with something that I enjoyed. What began as a hobby became my business. I called it Mountain View Daylily Nursery because I had a view of the Glasshouse Mountains.”

There were only three other large nurseries in Australia that specialised in daylilies. Scott’s nursery became the fourth. He opened on weekends to collectors who shared his love of the exotic flower.

Within two years the flourishing nursery outgrew its one acre. The purchase of land in Policeman Spur Road saw the

“At one stage Peter Gilmore, famous Sydney restaurateur contacted me and asked if I could supply one thousand daylily buds a week. We had three acres under cultivation and provided buds to him for a couple of years.”

Scott agrees that gardening is definitely therapeutic. He attributes much of his physical and mental well being to this love.

“After prolonged illness when hope seemed lost, one has to be grateful for improved health. Life is wonderful!”

project expand. “It was the most perfect block. The soil was beautiful and the aspect was great!” Scott reminisced.

Scott’s vision of creating a landscape garden to showcase daylilies and educate visitors came to fruition with four acres under cultivation. The business focus was on retail, mail order and hybridising.

“Eventually, we got too big and I was disillusioned with having so many visitors…six thousand in a five month period. A lot of them were tourists and not gardeners, so it all changed.

“Then we leased nearby farmland. We sell via the internet and still supply big nurseries but are no longer open to the public.”

Travel formed an integral part of Scott’s daylily journey with clients in fifteen countries. “We don’t export anymore but back then I travelled and got myself known. It wasn’t just about daylilies. I loved meeting people!”

The Global Financial Crisis saw the business downsize dramatically. By 2011 sales had plummeted by fifty per cent and five staff members were laid off. Scott remembers it as a heart wrenching time. However, it was a matter of survival.

“It was a big change and a lot of nurseries closed. That’s why places like Bunnings came to the fore. Mountain View Daylily Nursery is now the only specialist nursery of its kind in Australia.

“During the past four years we’ve supplied daylilies to a large propagation nursery for tissue culturing…micro propagation, a natural process done in a laboratory. It’s taken a lot of trials to get seven varieties. Another fifteen are being evaluated.

“They create about 50,000 plants all the same. These are sent to nurseries all over Australia. Those nurseries take the little plants, increase them and on sell. My daylilies will be sold through Bunnings by the end of this year.

“Maleny Debutante was my first breeding effort. I selected the name because it was like stepping out. It was registered in America and we sent plants there for sale.

“Also, Booroobin Magic was quite unique at the time because there was nothing like it in the world. Another I’m really proud of is, In Excess, as I had succeeded in breeding a daylily with an excess of petals and fragrance,” said Scott proudly sharing photographs of the prized specimens.

Semi-retirement forced upon him by health challenges has given Scott Alexander time to ponder life. Gone are the years of being consumed with business, branding and public appearances. He is now able to focus on contributing to his community.

Supporting Maleny Golf Club in the development of junior golf and a Glasshouse group, Knitting for the Brisbane Needy, fulfils this endeavour. Sponsor of the Maleny Church of England’s St George’s Art Awards, Scott also helped Maleny High School raise around $12,000 towards building their new hall.

“All we did was provide brochures and dig the daylilies. The school then received a percentage of sales. Better than chocolate!” Scott quipped as our conversation turned to food.

The origin of the daylily is in Asia. “I’ve seen photos of the wild ones in Mongolia…acres of one colour. This wildflower is also a food source.

“Buds, petals and tubers can be used in culinary creations.

Pick the buds the day before they are due to open. You can quickly blanch them and fresh petals can be used in salads.

“I often tell people to pick the previous days expired daylily flowers and put them in casseroles and soups.

Dale Jacobsen met with the Maleny Historical Society to find out why it means so much.

HE OLD GIRL doesn’t look too good—her skin is peeling, her bones are fragile and she needs new glasses—but then I guess that I wouldn’t look too good if I was 112 years old either. Her heart is still sound, and the new hat that someone gave her 20 years ago keeps the rain off.

Glenferna, the once-stately old farmhouse that stands in the middle of dairy pasture on Landsborough–Maleny Road near the Montville turnoff, was born into the Thynne family somewhere around 1903 when farmer, sawmiller and shire councillor, Edward (Ted) Thynne acquired 469 acres of land— part of 770 acres first selected by Isaac Burgess in 1883.

Maleny Historical Society member, Desley Malone, explained that Glenferna’s history is linked very closely with that of Maleny.

“In the early days of the 20th Century, Maleny did not have a large enough population to warrant a post office, so Ted

registered Glenferna as a Receiving Office, with Mrs. Burgess, who lived just over the hill, acting as receiving office keeper.”

Ted married Lilly (Glasgow) and they began their family at Glenferna, however tough times saw them move on to Brisbane in 1913.

Names that have become part of Maleny folklore have either lived in the house over the years or leased the dairy farm: Beacom, Cork, Burgess, Dudley, Middlestadt, Whitehouse, Hempsall, Amos.

For many years, the property was known as Glenfairie, which seems to have morphed from the original Glenferna.

In 1975, the property was purchased by the Catholic Church and the home and farm became a prize in the Mater Art Union. Surely a prize worth winning. However, the winners lived in Melbourne and so the old girl became a rental property for many years.

In true Maleny spirit, someone is looking after Glenferna.

Brian and Leonie McFarlane purchased her in 2013 and faced the decision whether to renovate or build a new home for their daughter.

In the end, they generously offered the old farmhouse to the The Maleny History Preservation & Restoration Society for removal onto the Historical Village in McCarthy Road.

“This will be a huge undertaking”, said Desley. “We have quotes for the removal, and are in the process of fund-raising to get her on site. We almost have enough, but are asking the community to please contribute so we can continue the work of bringing Glenferna back to her original glory.

“We would really like to have the house moved by the end of the year.”

Once it has been moved, the work will commence in earnest. Anyone who watches renovation shows on TV knows this will not be easy nor cheap. Members of the society, together with the Men’s Shed, have the expertise to undertake most of the work, “but we need funds’, explained Desley.

“The committee has decided that anyone who donates $1,000 or over for the preservation of Glenferna will have their name added to a plaque to be proudly displayed on the completed house.”

The timing of the gift from the McFarlanes could not have been better. “When we held our highly successful Maleny School centenary in 2013, we were given so much memorabilia”, said Desley.

“This was just wonderful, but we then realised we need a place to store and display it all. Our aim is to dedicate

Glenferna as a museum for these artefacts as well as the post office.”

There was one more surprise for the Historical Society.

During the days when the home was being prepared for the art union prize, it was fitted out with high-quality silky oak furniture by Ed Rosenstengel, a maker from Fortitude Valley in Brisbane known for his expert craftsmanship and unique design.

During the years of tenancy, the eight-legged table, eight upholstered chairs, sideboard and chest of drawers had been stored in a shed on Russel Gardner’s property.

When he heard that the house was being donated, he offered the furniture as well. “It is now at the Men’s Shed, and they have begun restoring the furniture so we can place it back into the house”, said Desley.

“People might ask, ‘why bother?’, but this house, and the Maple 3 building, are the only two that remain of this era, and if we don’t maintain our links with the past, we will lose the unique nature of our Maleny district”.

Desley lived in the adjacent property for forty years, and knew the house from the time she was a child. It is obviously pretty special to her. She saw it at its best, and is determined that it will once again be a grand house.

ETE IS CERTAINLY an author of note. Children love his gentle messages and warm characters in stories such as, Sarah’s Heavy Heart, The Last Tree in the City and Oliver and George.

He often visits junior schools and libraries to read his books and give the children a fun class on how to draw characters or write a storyboard. I have witnessed some of these ‘tutorials’ and the young audience is often reduced to chuckles and always captivated.

I visited Pete at his home, framed with a white picket fence, in Flaxton. His wife, Bronwyn, welcomed me in to their cosy space, with a fire burning in the hearth and mugs of tea to warm us up.

The three of us talked music for a while. Bronwyn is an accomplished violinist, and said, “Yes, I can play the violin, but Pete picks up anything and he can play it!”

They are rehearsing for a gig at a family party at the moment, with Bron on violin and Pete on piano accordion.

We headed next door to Pete’s studio, a light, bright space,

with ideas, drawings, expressive creatures and quotes pinned all over the wall above his drawing board, peppered with sketches from his daughters.

“I scribble ideas and put them up here,” Pete told me.

“Nothing has happened with most of these yet, but I like the look of him.” He point to an alien with a curious expression on its face and I can almost see the story cogs turning in Pete’s mind.

Where does Pete find his inspiration? “Most of my ideas come from daydreaming. And often at about 2am. I usually have a notebook by the bed.”

Pete’s ideas may come from daydreaming, but the seed has often been planted by, “something that catches my eye, makes me think, or reading something and then I mull on it.”

He waves an arm around the peaceful space, “It’s good to be here, where it’s quiet and I can process it.”

So, how did this literary adventure begin? Was it a long hard slog, beset with rejection? Pete looked almost apologetic, “It was embarrassingly simple actually.”

He expanded, “About ten years ago I was teaching, but I was always scribbling cartoons on paper. I was also constantly inspired by kids’ books I was reading for school.

“I made some little books for my nieces and nephews, and Bronny encouraged me to give it a go properly. I spent a couple of years practising and then I created Jessica’s Box. I sent it off to a publisher and they liked it.”

He smiled and shrugged. “These days there is so much focus on workshops and courses and blogs.

That’s okay for some people, but I’d never draw a picture if I had to blog all the time!”

Pete paused to consider, before offering his personal opinion to any aspiring authors out there. “I think you just need to focus on the craft, and not so much on the extra stuff people tell you will help.”

Since his first book in 2008, Pete had been on a roll, with nine of his own published so far and his latest due out this month.

Blue Whale Blues, is a slight departure from his usual illustrative style. “I did a collage for this one. I drew and painted everything; then cut them all out and stuck them on.

It makes them pop out of the page a bit.”

The story revolves around a blue whale with bike trouble and a light-hearted penguin who tried to cheer him up.

I asked how long each book generally takes him. “Usually three-to-six months. Ideally during school hours!” he laughed.

It’s been a hectic 18 months with eight books finalised, two of his own and the rest which he has written or illustrated.

Pete plans to ease off for a while after the promotion of Blue Whale Blues, and give himself some headspace. “I feel I need to get back in my shell and concentrate.

“Once you start doing books, it’s easy to become influenced and write to try to please other people. You need to step back and ask yourself, ‘What do I want to do the most?’”

A recent trip to Europe and a visit to his hero, Roald Dahl’s, village has given Pete plenty of fresh ideas to play with whilst he retreats.

“I have an idea about a bike… and I’d like to write a chapter book, a novel.”

It is clear Pete is happy with the course life has taken, and again he attributes much of his leap of faith to his wife, Bronwyn’s, support.

“There was a quote attributed to Mark Twain that Bron stuck in front of me for years.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.

So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.

Maths maps out Brodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future

When I met Maleny High and QUT graduate Brody Foy, I already knew about his massive achievements. What I didn't know was how humble the talented 2015 Rhodes Scholar was and how he had room in his life for so many things other than maths. In September, this exceptional young man is off to England and Oxford University.

S

O HOW DOES MATHS prevent lung cancer? This was my first question for Brody Foy. I was intrigued to hear that mathematics had such a role.

"Some interesting work is being done with computer simulations of organs - these early investigations are too risky for humans."

Brody explains that mathematical modelling accurately captures what's going on with the chemical/physical/biological laws of how the lung works.

"It may assist with long term emphysema, predict surgical outcomes before operations like how much lung function they will have or may help stop or slow the spread of cancer.

Things they wouldn't test on humans."

To apply for a Rhodes Scholarship, Brody had to submit a research proposal and contact a few researchers over there.

Work was being conducted on heart and lung modelling.

Brody is building on previous research and able to focus on his interest area, the medical applications of maths.

I asked if his instrument was making the trip overseas too.

Brody is also an acoustic guitarist.

He smiled, "I'm paying extra baggage fees, I wouldn't want to be separated from it for three years!"

He says a surprising number of his classmates are in bands and orchestras."It's the same part of the brain - it is all about patterns.

"My Dad always played a little when I was 10, he taught me a couple of chords, then showed me the internet.

"For me it has always been a good outlet, it takes me away from numbers."

But it is obvious that those numbers are a passion.

A previous President of the QUT Mathematics Society, Brody says, "I think there is a misconception that there are no jobs for mathematicians, except teaching. They are just called different names, like analyst or quantitative consultant.

"A US website called Careercast rank common jobs according to factors like pay rates, work conditions and expected work/ life balance.

"For the past five years, three jobs in the top five have been mathematicians!"

Brody is right, they are currently 1. actuary, 3. mathematician and 4. statistician*.

But he is also dismayed, "The world is more dependent on technology, but enrolment in Maths B and C is dropping. It has nearly halved in the last 20 years (last year it rose slightly)."

Brody's classmates have some incredible jobs - from finance/stock market trading, quantitative consulting, data analysis (across multiple industries), games development, medical research (breast cancer, lung cancer, hospital layouts) to renewable energy research (electric batteries).

All of his fellow honour students are drawing wages.

"Applied maths is one of the most employable jobs!"

has an "unlimited career potential across a wide range of industries.

"Jobs in mathematics rank among the nation's best for 2015. These positions are financially lucrative, offer abundant opportunities for advancement and, most surprisingly, often deviate from common perceptions about maths." (www.careercast.com) It also states that 'soft skills' like good communication and teamwork are important too. If that is the case, then Brody is set for sparkling career.

QUT Volunteer of the Year for 2013, he worked with several organisations.

Action group, Spur, tackles suicide prevention and men's mental health.

"Men's rate of suicide is four times higher. We challenged the perceptions of the whole 'harden up'/'men shouldn't show emotion' mentality we have and connect men to support services, like Beyond Blue."

As the Queensland State Director of Left Right Think-Tank, he strived to engage young people with political process and policy.

"You may hear youth opinion on issues like climate change and civil rights. But you don't hear much on issues like economy, infrastructure or government transparency.

“A bunch of students research, create a policy paper and advocate to government on non-youth issues. Some years we have lots of success, then not so much." But Brody believes bringing a youth voice to politics is vital.

In rural Columbia, with a group of volunteers he developed a 3D scanning 'box in a backpack', which recreated a 3D virtual map to improve safety in mines. They also designed water filters locals could use without many resources, to remove common pollutants like mercury.

The technology not only aimed for awareness in their government, it has the potential to improve health and safety in other areas.

No wonder he won 2013 QUT Student Leader of the Year!

Kieran and Susan Foy from Kondalilla must be proud parents indeed - he also achieved an OP of 1 from Maleny State High School, earned a straight 7s Bachelor’s degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics, Honours degree in Mathematics and only at 21 years of age, is a published academic author.

But he is proud of his country background, credits his wonderful teachers from Maleny High and Montville Primary, and is an inspiration to locals.

I asked if he had any advice for other students, and Brody did. "The world is very big,

Renae and Ben Sirl provide a healthy grocery revolution for Palmwoods and their daughter Frankie

In the foothills of the Hinterland lies the village of Palmwoods. Steeped in farming history, this area has long been a wonderful place to grow produce and benefit from the richness of the land. Renae’s Pantry is a constant reminder of just how lucky we are and how we can all prosper from sharing this edible wealth.

F YOU WALK DOWN Main Street in Palmwoods, you will come across a little lane tucked between popular café Homegrown and the local hairdressers. Stroll through and a welcoming vision awaits.

You’ve found Renae’s Pantry - brimming with brightly coloured local produce, jars of flour, wheat, pulses and seeds, organic dairy and a local cheese selection. Not to mention organic varieties of washing and household products.

The smell of fresh fruit mingles with the rich aroma of ground coffee beans from The Tin Shed opposite. You instantly know this is a place to nourish your body and perhaps your soul.

Renae’s Pantry has been established for two-and-a-half years, gaining a positive reputation for its community ethos and the Friday night candlelit fare on offer.

Local organic produce on ice

“We opened in the same month that our daughter was born,” says Renae Sirl. “We were doing two days a week, like a market, but I must admit that was hard work when I’d just given birth!”

So what was the driving force behind this venture? Renae explains, “It was partly through a great friend Hayley, who owned Sister Organic Café in Palmwoods; she really encouraged me. And it was partly due to a profound shift I had during pregnancy and my first child’s birth.

“I suddenly became really aware of what I was putting in my body; what I would be feeding my child. So I started throwing out packets of chemical-laden stuff in my pantry, I stopped going to the big supermarkets and I started baking and cooking.

“I became so excited and inspired by what I was learning I began a market stall called Conscious Being. I would package up flour, nuts and other baking goods and stick recipes on the front.

“My mission was to help mums with feeding their babies.

Even now my energy is more on baking, mothering and nurturing.”

She smiles, “Ben is the fresh produce, farming, and politically-minded person. We are a classic head and heart team!”

Ben’s background lies in design and planning, whereas Renae trained as a psychologist. They met at university when, according to Ben, “There were about 40 people coming out of the lifts and I saw her.”

Ben convinced Renae to buy tickets to a comedy night he was promoting, and so it all began. “When we met we were classic consumers and partied a lot. Once we had Billy, Renae completely changed and I thought, ‘That’s it, we’re never going out again’!”

Ben realised he was on a new path, “Next thing you know, you’ve left your cushy air-conditioned job and become a grocer,” he grins.

Actually, he is well-suited to this change. With experience in building for the cattle and farming industries, he noticed how ridiculous it seemed to separate farming from our community, firmly believing that it is feasible to farm within our urban landscape.

This led him to manifest the Backyard Farms Project, an initiative encouraging people to grow crops and vegetables in their own gardens and acreage.

“I’m not anti broadacre farms, but I have seen the destruction they can cause; so if there is an alternative, why not do it?” Ben questions.

“On the Sunshine Coast we have the climate and community to prove urban agriculture can work. We can reduce food waste, food miles and increase our knowledge base. And, if you have a bad season in urban agriculture, noone loses their house.”

Renae agrees, “This has become a lovely exchange place for people to swap their produce for other grocery essentials.

And some customers pay for 100% of their groceries through gardening.”

Ben dreams of this idea spreading. “Just think, if the big supermarkets didn’t exist, we would have ten-to-fifteen of these shops and markets all over Palmwoods alone, each with their own flavour. The small grocery revolution!”

Their passion for this place means they now open Tuesday – Saturday from 9am-6pm, keeping them very busy. Locals are encouraged to bring produce to be sold or swapped, and most other products available are certified organic.

Friday nights in The Lane are a celebration of delicious vegetarian food, made from scratch by new chef, Solomon Othello. “We eat meat sometimes, but we wanted these Friday nights to be a light footprint, which is why we chose a veggie menu,” explains Ben. “Lots of people never get the chance to enjoy really wholesome vegetarian cuisine. Meat is such an over-utilised form of protein; we are rarely exposed to other alternatives,” adds Renae.

What’s on the menu? “Spicy satay tofu kebabs, melt-inyour-mouth red lentil dahl with hand-rolled spelt flour puris, roast pumpkin soup with organic sourdough, warm, wood-

fired apple crumble with coconut and saffron custard…”

If you’ve never been, it is a magical experience. Tea lights dotted along the lane and up into the garden. Makeshift tables and chairs from recycled wood and hessian coffee bags, fairy lights in the trees, a fire lit in the colder weather and a sandpit for the younger children to play in.

Live music is often part of the evening, and it feels like you have stepped into a Mediterranean village to celebrate good food and great company.

As we say goodbye, Ben shares a quote from food writer and educator, Anna Lappe, which resonates with them both.

“Every time you spend money you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want.”

I leave with a bag of sweet local organic strawberries, feeling comforted that more and more people are voting for Renae’s Pantry.

HERE WILL BE OVER 100 food and food-related exhibits, 58 speakers including celebrity chefs, and a full program of cooking demonstrations, chef presentations, conversations, interactive workshops and kids activities across seven different venues within the Festival.

Festival Director Julie Shelton said the line-up included more local and nationally recognised chefs and presenters than ever before.

“Venues making a return are, cooking demonstrations at Real Food Kitchen, expert presentations at Food for Thought, conversations about diet and health at Nourishing Ideas, demonstrations of tips and techniques at Food Craft, and informative workshops about growing the best quality food at Kitchen Garden, as well as lots of great kids activities in the Little Sprouts area,” Julie said.

Chris and Jodi Bond from Pomodoras launch two new balsamic flavours. You can taste Hum Honey, Rosemary and Apple Balsamic Dressing and Sweet Chilli Balsamic Dressing at their stall.

The brand new Sunshine Coast Coffee Roasters Guild make their first appearance, working collectively to establish the Sunshine Coast as the coffee capital of Queensland.

Sample brews from Montville Coffee and the five other outlets, learn brewing tips at the Coffee Roasters’ Marquee, and hear about the amazing coffee journey from bean to brew.

Then celebrate with the best baristas on the Coast as they compete in Latte Art Smackdown competitions from 12.30pm on the Saturday and Sunday.

Supported by the Queensland Government, council and SCDL, the Real Food Festival will be held at the Maleny Showgrounds, 13 Stanley River Road, Maleny on September 12 and 13 from 9am-4pm daily. Entry is $20 for a daily adult pass and children under 16 are free.

TEP INTO Café de Fudge and you will meet owners Mick and Julie Ryan.

The couple settled in Montville ten years ago, after living in New Zealand, and were coping with the "hard slog" of running a busy convenience store in Nambour.

After driving past for "a wee while" they noticed the premises of the old Information Centre was for lease. From Easter 2014, they had “crazy big days” managing both businesses until they sold the Nambour store a few months after.

But why call it Café de Fudge?

"Julie started the fudge in the Nambour business, it was so popular we brought it here. People like to share a plate of fudge with their coffee," said Mick.

"When we bought it, people told us 'don't make it like other cafes - do it more home-style'." So they did.

Mick prides himself on his coffee - complete with the signature logo! Mick tells customers this is the "Nicest coffee you ever had!"

Julie is the creative side to the business, putting her special touch in baking and presentation of the food.

Julie loves to nourish her customers with her delicious scones and cakes. "Love -

that's the old fashioned ingredient. That's why it tastes so good - it is the L word."

"No chips - we don't have a deep fry or grill plate." Instead they serve an appetising array of light meals like filos, turkish bread, toasted sandwiches and pumpkin soup.

With gluten free and vegetarian options, a children's playground, outside courtyard and wheelchair access - they cater for everyone. Well behaved dogs may also accompany their owners at the outside tables.

Mick smiled, "We have so many regular customers - some come up from Scarborough, Brisbane and the Coast just for our Devonshire teas! One couple from Beerwah always end up here - they say we 'have the best food and best coffee'."

The word is spreading around the motorbike enthusiasts too - they recently had over a dozen arrive just for "best hot chocolate in the world"!

But they also say clients love the relaxed atmosphere. "We often have a chat with our regulars - I think they like our personal service just as much as the home-style food," said Mick.

Gillian Mills from Maleny Cruise and Travel told HT about her inspiring brother John Cockbill and his remarkable wife Penny as they tackled the famous Camino de Santiago.

Gillian has sent people on the track, but says she knows "no one that has ever done the whole 800km, and never at 76 and 72 years, nor of one with a prosthetic leg!"

LOUDY DAYS ENSURE we are well covered early morning when temps are 2-5 degrees. Wind squalls rosy the cheeks and with our fingers shielded in warm gloves and bodies wrapped with three layers it's easy to make way.

And so it goes ......... One foot after another.

Pen and I take an extra day at a nice hotel in the centre of Burgos. We promenade along the narrow streets amongst the locals, window shopping and stopping at the sidewalk cafés for a glass of Vino Tinto and a tapas or two. Our freshly laundered walking cloths a sure identity that we are resting pilgrims.

The great Cathedral of Burgos is glorious in its size and ancient art-laden interior. We also catch up with a couple of young friends we met along the way . . . . Monica from Peru and Francis, a Spanish writer.

We shared a joy-filled dinner with them as they both spoke Spanish, and we didn’t. But we ate and drank well.

We leave Burgos early in the morning. The stone-paved streets are empty and have been cleaned overnight, the day is beginning to dawn. For guidance we seek out the familiar scallop shell signs denoting the path of the Camino, and the distinctive yellow arrows which point the way out of the city.

We’re happy to have our back packs on and we feel happy and refreshed.

Other pilgrims are filtering out into the trail. We all worry for, and encourage each other in our greetings. So many different languages with the one purpose ... to reach Santiago.

fields. The distances between the villages is longer and we carry sufficient water to keep the tummy quiet.

We walk long distances in silence. It is an amazing event which rewards us daily, with happiness for perseverance.

Around 3-4pm we check into an albergue, select our bunk where John always sleeps on the top, shower, then change into our “other” clothes. We relax, free of our backpacks, check the local bar for a pilgrim’s meal at 6.30pm and are in our bed and asleep by 8.30pm.

It’s day 23. We passed the half way mark near Calzadilla de la Cueza. We continue, day after day, old worn stone villages, up hill and down dale. We seem to be resting more often and maybe drinking more coffee and cold water.

Outside Villafranca we choose the tougher high mountain path through shaded forests filled with bird songs, and hillsides covered in purple heather . . . . another great reward for taking the road least travelled.

We press on. An early start in the cool mountain air soon had us awake. It was the day of O’Cebriero, our last major mountain climb on the Camino. It was a tough day up wet mountain tracks.

The delightful albergue gave us a private room so we could leave early enough next morning to be at the top of O’Cebriero to see the sunrise. But it was not to be.

We walked for an hour and a half in fog and drizzling rain. At the top the strong winds of the Atlantic were telling us we were in the region of Galicia.

The beautiful statue of the ancient pilgrim holding his hat into the wind was apt. It was also the point denoting we were only 150km from Santiago. We feel a rush of elation and grin warmly at each other.

Many, many walkers join the Camino just to do the last 100km. They look clean and fresh, without backpacks. Many saw Pen as the girl with the slightly imperfect walk, the slight limp.

Well meaning they’d comment, "I have a pill that will fix that", or "I'm a nurse. Do you have polio?", or "I had a knee like that once, but it got better."

We were now looking over the sprawling city of Santiago. Four and a half kilometres to go. Old, local townsfolk bid us "Buon Camino", seemingly in recognition of where we had come from in France. "Did it show"? We wondered.

One kilometre up the hill to the edge of the old town. These were the longest kilometres we had ever walked. Finally the old buildings and narrow lanes and alleys were around us.

But we had to find the pilgrims’ office, to get our final stamp and sign out. Then we would be given our Compostelas, our certificates. We were directed to the office and stood in a small courtyard in a queue. We could hardly stand.

Finally we were called in. The girl who received us was so warm and welcoming and shed a tear with us. Such was the emotion. It was what we wanted. Nothing less.

HARLIE MORELAND camp and day-use area on Little Yabba Creek near Kenilworth has been a favourite spot of mine for around 40 years. My children used to spend the school holidays swimming in the waterhole, walking the forest tracks, making friends.

I was therefore keen to see how the much-loved

campground had changed with the recent $1.5 million upgrade in the hands of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

A couple of weeks ago I drove out to see if the character of the campground had been maintained. I am pleased to say that QPWS have taken what was a special place and made it even better.

New toilet facilities, information boards, barbecues, reworked roads through the campsite, much landscaping and a new causeway make visiting more comfortable, but the swimming hole and the beautiful open camping

bushland remain as inviting as they always were.

We had a picnic at the brand-new tables, then strolled along a path beside the creek as birds darted through the undergrowth. Families were everywhere, camping, playing on the open grassland, picnicking—enjoying this special place just as my family did all those years ago.

The area was officially reopened on July 24 by National Parks Minister, Dr Steven Miles, in the presence of MP for Nicklin, Peter Wellington, and descendants of Charlie Moreland—Kenilworth Forest Station’s senior ranger 19391966, after whom the park is named.

And there is something very special incorporated in the new causeway.

In June 2014, I visited there with George Sherwell, one of three men from Mapleton who had built Sunday Creek Road in 1952. The article appeared in the July edition of Hinterland Times.

When George and his mates, Gordon Jeffs and Denis Burley, finished building the ford across the creek, they tipped out the left-over concrete, smoothed it over and carved their names and the date before it set.

When George showed me this private spot in his memory, he said he imagined it would disappear when they revamped the area.

I scrambled down the side of the new causeway, not really expecting to find their names still there, but they were.

QPWS senior ranger, Wyn Boon, who led the team responsible for the work, recognised the significance of this bit of ‘graffiti’ and asked the private contractors who were rebuilding the causeway to save the original names.

The contractors then added their own names beside the original names. George (who sadly passed last September) would have been so chuffed.

OME AND DISCOVER a Hinterland gem and find out how it all started. About 8 km outside Maleny is the picturesque Hinterland village known today as

Witta.

With its rapidly changing landscape and mobile population, “Wittafest” is about bringing people together, connecting through stories, music, games, food, drink and crafts all inspired by the unique historical context.

For this inaugural and free event, we are discovering Teutoburg up to 1900. Activities and displays will focus on the early years of selection, survey and settlement.

During this period Witta was called Teutoburg – (and if you want to know more, it will all be there on the day) a township established by Lutheran pioneering families.

The organisers of this new event have been busy collecting survey plans, historical photographs and local stories, to help today’s residents appreciate what life was like in Witta in the past.

Wittafest encompasses an array of activities, including tours of the cemetery, the old school and church and a re-vegetation walk of Bergann’s Lane, candle-making workshop, cheese and butter making demonstration and an opportunity to dress up 19th Century style.

It could not be complete without German beer history (and tasting!) storytelling, some great music, gourmet foods, costume & historical displays – and kids’ games from yesteryear.

It definitely promises to be a fun family day, especially enjoying the kids wrapping their energies around sack, egg-and-spoon and three-legged races!

Witta Recreation Club and local heritage specialist Timeline Heritage are partners in developing and delivering this community initiative.

ORN IN melbOURNe in 1971, Adam moved with his parents to Saunders beach, a little north of Townsville, when he was fifteen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our family home was a stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throw from the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge and surrounded by natural beauty. Our nearest neighbour was just a dot on the horizon. It suited my temperament but I did become quite reclusive,â&#x20AC;? Adam explained.

Adam demonstrated a talent for the arts from an early age but drama, music and photography were his main focus until the age of twenty eight. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was still living at home. I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t earning a satisfactory income from my music and I felt trapped. It was time for a major change in my life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I picked up a paintbrush and began painting. It didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take me long to realise it was something I really enjoyed doing. my father, Richard, who is a highly regarded, accomplished artist, was an obvious influence along with brett Whitely and Francis bacon. Concepts in my early paintings were drawn from my favourite musicians â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Prince, The beatles and Jimmy Hendrix.â&#x20AC;?

In 2000, the bogusz family moved to brisbane and Adamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life changed forever. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At first I felt pretty daunted by the city and had feelings of trepidation of not knowing where to go,â&#x20AC;? Adam said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A year late I met my wife, Sarah, and life blossomed. my paintings changed from solitary, downcast figures with the city on top of them to courting couples and outdoor scenes depicting young families enjoying Queenslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sunshine.

I have resisted the tendency to fall into one style of painting.

Hudson works to tap into "all the powers these animals have - for which we give them little credit."

He acts as a naturalist of their spirit, depicting his chosen fauna based upon straight-forward observation as well as through a poetic lens focused by rapport with the natural world.

Hudson's imagery often has a sweeping, cinematic quality verging on the Romantic. His passion for painting the night sky filled with stars underscores relative scale and the natural world's endless layers of presence and meaning for us.

Barrier Reef by Peter Hudson

"You think an elephant is big, but when you see the night sky it really hits home how small we are. It's important for us to live the mystery of being here a lot more than we do."

Interestingly, Hudson has played the drums professionally in blues, country and rock bands throughout Australia from the time he turned twenty.

A drummer holds the potential - given by the nature of his instrument - to carry the rhythm for the group or sometimes, to "use dynamics and punch things", to disrupt the norm. This intensity of range inhabits Hudson's drawings and paintings as well.

At first glance, his work gently knocks the viewer offcentre. For example, Elephant and Bird's submerged, swimming pachyderm is totally unexpected.

Using such a strange, but compassionate shock to make a point, Hudson reminds us we may never truly understand the super creatures' mysteries. Still, our need for connection to nature lives strongly in our bones.

Robyn’s quilt flies to Texas A

UdReY HePbURN has been an inspiration for local resident, Robyn martin for many years. So much so, that when Robyn began learning patchwork techniques five years ago at The Sewing Basket, she decided to create a wall hanging portrait of Audrey.

“I've always admired the amazing Audrey Hepburn and decided that she would be the subject of a larger project. I love to hand embroider and embellish and I was able to incorporate this also into my work.” said Robyn.

“I came across the method of 'colour wash' in a book I'd bought and made one of the patterns. This made me very excited at the possibilities this method presented.”

The project is constructed of numerous one-inch square pieces of fabric in 52 different colours/shades, with the borders made from silk. The finished picture has also been hand embellished, with many crystals and beads and took two years to complete.

Robyn also had contact with Audrey Hepburn’s son to ensure no copyright had been breached before entering her into any shows.

To Robyn’s delight her effort was successful and is a stunning work of art. Friends and colleagues urged her to enter this into various shows.

The first was maleny Show where she came first and was also Show Champion. Audrey was then entered into the brisbane ekka and again won first place, as well as ‘People’s

Choice Award’.

In 2014 Robyn sent Audrey to the Sydney Royal easter Show and again won first place, a Special Award, and the overall ‘Standard of excellence’ Award for the quilting/patchwork section.

This year the patchwork was photographed and entered into the International Quilt Festival in Houston. Robyn has just received news that her patchwork of Audrey has been selected as a finalist and has been flown to Houston for the final judging.

“I've been surprised by every single award Audrey has won.

It was a project I did for myself as a challenge being newish to patchwork. I loved creating her and have only entered her into shows at other people's encouragement.

“America is the home of patchwork and so I'm amazed she was selected to be a finalist. There are many quilters out there with many more years experience than me.”

And what is next? Robyn says, “I do have at least two projects in my mind currently to do, but as yet have not had the time to get these started.”

In the meantime, we’ll look forward to hearing how Audrey fairs in Texas.

ENILWORTH CELEBRATES! will begin the celebration of its 18th arts festival with the rousing sounds of the Sunshine Coast Concert band in kenilworth Hall on September 27.

HeRe'S PleNTY OF history in the kenilworth Show and Rodeo on September 19, celebrating 96 years of entertainment for all ages in 2015. lolie murtagh has been involved for the last 55 odd years and Show Secretary for the past 20.

"It used to be that all the farming families would meet up at the kenilworth Rodeo. Children would come up - it was like a family reunion.

“The first kenilworth Show was organised by the kenilworth community on the river flats of the Sharry property in the locality now known as Gheerulla in 1919. The show continued there, annually, until 1935."

After the establishment of kenilworth township in 1921, the focus of the show activities shifted to that centre.

Rodeo programs were organised during World War II to aid the Patriotic fund in the new recreation grounds established by community volunteers.

The 1948 program included camp draft, bullock riding, buckjumping, all horse events, wood chopping, foot running,

grand ball at night.

"The annual kenilworth Rodeo and Show has operated for many years through the foresight, generosity and voluntary labour from the local community.

“Now we are encouraging the younger ones to come on board through QCAS Next Gen or directly through the local show movement."

Come see the NRA All Round Rodeo, which runs all day, with show horses and show jumping at 8am, exhibits and competition in the Pavilion, a stud beef cattle display and weight guessing competitions, and Wood Chop at 10am.

Come and try out the amusements, including dodgems, frog-hopper, obstacle course, tribal encounter castle, plus Old macdonald’s Farm.

The four-piece band Audible lines crank up 4-8pm with their renditions of Creedence, beatles, Powderfinger, Fleetwood mac, eagles and more.

TUdeNTS FROm THe Ananda marga River School, maleny will join forces with more than 10,000 kids across all States and Territories in Australia as part of 2015 kids Teaching kids Week to ‘fight the good fight’ for the environment.

Using science experiments, theatrical performances, songs and comedy, the students will teach each other about environmental issues during the 2015 Target kids Teaching kids Week which is being held between 7-11 September.

In 2015, kids Teaching kids will have reached over 100,000 kids, inspiring them to take action and teach each other on environmental issues like climate change, conservation, energy, water, and population growth.

The River School will be presenting at one of about 100 events with over 500 schools taking place during kids Teaching kids Week with a short film, display and workshop on how to make your own recycled paper.

The film documents how grade 5 River School students, with the help of parent leeza Stratford, students collected and recycled school paper and turned it back into useable paper that can be put through a photocopy machine or printer.

Jenny Oakley, Principal at the River School said, “It’s

been amazing to see how this paper project has raised awareness about paper wastage, not sending waste to the landfill unnecessarily, and recycling in general.”

River School grade 5’s 2014 creation was screened at the ‘little big Shots, International Film Festival for kids” in melbourne in may, 2015. It is now touring around Australia, showcasing best practise in student-made films. It was

Gary Crew encourages children to delve into the stories and their illustrations, to see how this partnership amplifies the message, creates a mood or emphasises an idea.

The IGA and the Co-op have been wonderful in catering for the morning tea on the day, and the Friends of the library have done a great job attending meetings, helping out on the day and supplying prizes.

OU mAY ReCAll that in August I talked about the launch of our new retail nursery Forest Heart in maleny, but I must admit with a degree of embarrassment that unfortunately this was a case of premature anticipation on my behalf... however Spring has sprung and the planets aligned ... and we have now relaxed, matured, slowed down and we can at last celebrate at our leisure the fact that we will be well and truly open for business on Tuesday the 1st of September!

As always there’s a lot to celebrate in September. Spring officially starts (although this year I think that was at the beginning of August when young Red Cedar’s started to put on new leaf ), it’s also biodiversity month, Save the koala month, landcare Week, National Wattle day on the 1st and Threatened Species day on the 7th. This September is very much time to celebrate our unique flora and fauna – as if you need an excuse! Now is the time to get your hands in the soil, plant a garden (or if your ambitious a forest!), whack a weed or two, build a nest box, plant some fruit trees and vegies and perhaps if you’ve got the time you may even wish to fondle some fauna - just make sure its consensual! living in South east Queensland we are lucky enough to

find ourselves in one of the worlds true biodiversity Hotspots, with our local native plants alone having a diversity of over 3000 unique species found in this relatively small region. I’d like to say that all of this amazing biodiversity (all of the native flora, fauna and fungi etc...) that also call this place home are equally lucky to have our company, but that would be stretching the narrative just a wee bit, however I do like to be optimistic and hope that things are getting better. Our appreciation of our local native flora and fauna has increased dramatically over the last decade or two and who knows maybe sometime down the track we will all be comfortable and knowledgeable in this land and the life it is home to.

Planting local native plants in your gardens and across your land helps create connectivity in the landscape and enables our unique biodiversity to move through the landscape again, ensuring their survival and who knows maybe at some stage down the track we won’t need a Threatened Species day anymore (nah, not even I’m that blindly optimistic!)

I look forward to catching up with you as we launch our new venture this Spring and together we can help secure our biodiversity’s future.

He ReCeNT Sunshine Coast Council sponsored Conservation Forum focussed on the value of story telling as a means of conveying messages. many citizens don’t relate to facts and figures but do remember stories that are relevant to their lives, amuse them, or inspire them to become active in achieving a particular goal. If that person can do it, so can I! landcare is a bit like that. Numbers of trees planted, km of protective fence erected, or volumes of weeds removed aren’t usually remembered but a story which recounts the excitement of a young child seeing a spectacular butterfly for the first time will be. If that child had helped plant the special vine or shrub its caterpillar relied on, so much the better.

Children love to explore, collect rocks, leaves, discarded shells and other attractive items. They may want to go to their tablets, ipads or other computer tools

later to find out more, and tell their own stories.

A story that recalls the volume and size of fish that used to be caught in a particular river means something to the present keen fisherman who will ask why he, or she, can’t catch fish like that today.

The present health of the river usually has much to do with it and the story of its past history can lead on to a new story of rehabilitation and a return to the wonderful complexity of river life.

Whether we live near rivers or not, we all in the end can have an impact on river health. Water does, after all, flow downhill and we live at the top of the catchment of several rivers.

Our landscape is constantly changing.

e ARe ReGUlARlY presented with new superfoods to add to our diet. Some are wonderfully-named and obscure fruits from far-off jungles. Others are common vegetables we’ve been growing for years.

What makes superfoods so super?

We are told that superfoods have more than their fair share of vitamins and minerals and that they possess amazing powers to help us to fend off chronic disease, build bones, improve our eyesight, keep our mind sharp, slow the ageing process and make us thin - some pretty bold claims.

Are superfoods really that much better?

(Should we believe the hype?) let’s take kale for example - a highly-prized superfood. kale, we are informed, has higher-than-usual quantities of vitamins and minerals. but is all kale equal? does all kale have higher-than-usual nutrient density? kale picked fresh just before your meal, grown in your own garden using rich homemade organic compost would definitely be a nutrient dense, and alive food.

On the other hand, kale grown in depleted soils using chemical fertilisers, picked possibly before last week, wrapped in plastic, stored, transported, and then left in your fridge for several days would not have so many of its ‘super’ qualities remaining.

If you are buying kale, ideally choose organic, local kale that has been harvested within days, then consume quickly.

After much fanfare we now hear that, while good, kale is not the healthiest green. most leafy green vegetables grown in your own garden would have as many vitamins and minerals, and be similarly high in antioxidants.

A recent report published by the Centers for disease Control and Prevention, the leading national public health institute in the US, ranked kale at number 14 for its nutrient density behind others such as watercress, Chinese cabbage, beet greens, chard and parsley. kale is also claimed to have high levels of antioxidants and it is widely believed that high antioxidant foods help lower the risks of cancer, degeneration, and disease.

On further investigation it seems that many common herbs and spices have far more antioxidants than kale turmeric, oregano, parsley and basil for example. even dark chocolate has four times as many antioxidants.

From a gardener’s perspective though, I still love kale because it is so easy to grow and it’s a drought-tolerant, pestresistant vegetable that lasts a long time in the garden.

Also, it is an open-hearted vegetable. I just pick off a leaf or two from each plant when I need them, and then keep coming back each day for months. I have at least four varieties in my garden.

Grow your own superfoods A couple of other super-easy ‘superfoods’ to grow in your garden are mustard greens and turmeric.

Mustard Greens mustard greens (brassica juncea) have more antioxidants than kale and very high levels of vitamins A, C and k. These bright green leafy plants, with abundant displays of yellow flowers, have been a regular drought-tolerant volunteer in my garden for several years. every part of the plant is edible - the young leaves in salad, the older leaves lightly cooked, the early flower spikes are like a spicy asparagus, the older flowers are great 36

in a salad as are the young seedpods, and of course the seeds are edible (yes, it’s mustard seed).

You can add these to your own curry pastes and homemade dijon mustards.

Turmeric Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is an easy ginger-like plant to grow. Originally from India, turmeric has been used for thousands of years, originally as a dye, and is well known as the orange colour in curries.

Turmeric is valued as a general immune enhancer, in improving liver function, lowering cholesterol and treating arthritis. Increasing research is being carried out with regards to its capacity to prevent cancer and even inhibit cancer cell growth.

It is important to realise however that turmeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, is sensitive to heat and light. To get the most from turmeric,it’s best eastern raw, grated in salads and added to juices. For hot dishes, it’s better to add after the meal has been cooked.

Around here turmeric tends to die back in winter - the sign that it’s time to harvest. The orange clusters of roots seem like intertwined hands holding each other under the ground.

You can gently dig them up and separate. leave some in the ground for another crop next year and store the rest in a cool dark place - a bucket of sand under the verandah is perfect.

Declining nutrient value Over the past decades, fruits and vegetables have been bred for their sweetness, size and shelf stability, rather than their nutrition. Older varieties that are closer to wild ancestors tend to have a higher nutrient profile, e.g.: ● small cherry tomatoes are closer to their wild ancestors and have 20 times more antioxidants than a big tomatoes ● shallots have 120 times more antioxidants than newer sweet onions and are also higher in vitamins A and C. The green part is the most nutritious ● rocket is one of the greens closest to its wild ancestor and is a nutrient dense salad leaf.

Another tip for maximising your nutrient intake. eat fresh beetroots - they have 50 times more antioxidants than carrots. don’t toss the beet greens. They have much more nutrition than the beets themselves - even more than kale.

After removing the superfood marketing hype, I like to translate the superfood message into one which is encouraging us to keep healthy by consuming real food.

It’s a simple concept, but a needed one in a society dominated by fast, processed and nutrient-depleted food.

Ideally, we need to consume a healthy balanced diet full of fresh local, organic foods - particularly bright, dark, or intensely-coloured vegetables, plus wild foods and whole grains.

Artists pop up for September Sam Shepherd at Finbars maleny's awarded young jazz-blues singer/guitarist, Sam Shepherd, started playing guitar at the ripe old age of five. After hearing the applause Sam was hooked.

Years spent busking at markets enabled him to hone his craft and save for his first handmade guitar. In 2009 Sam graduated from Griffith University with a ‘bachelor of Popular music’.

Since then he has worked and performed with some of the best musicians in the country, such as guitar virtuoso michael Fix and Ian Perez (Wolfmother). In 2013 Sam was the opening act for 'diesel' on the Sunshine Coast.

5 The lux Radio Theatre has chosen the comedywhodunit, The Thin Man, based on the movie of the same name, for its’ short season at The Independent Theatre, Palmwoods.

Local films focus on dementia Three locally-made films about dementia will be screened on Saturday September 19 in the maleny Community Centre, as part of a program of short films entitled Lifetime Stories on Film.

The matinee includes films from Griffith University and Sydney’s Young at Heart festival, as well as a documentary from the USA demonstrating personalised music for dementia sufferers.

The three local films, by Christine elcoate, Jess begun and Jill morris, members of the maleny Film Cooperative, take very different approaches to a vital topic, with original scripts sparked by a RAdF grant from the Sunshine Coast Council. A Retirement Village for Montville?

A

COmmUNITY debATe over a proposed retirement village in montville is premature, according to the montville Village Association.

Sundale, a not-for-profit community developer, purchased 14ha of land off Western Avenue several years ago with the intention of creating a retirement village. mVA president doug Patterson said mVA executives went on a site inspection in early 2015 and met with architects and engineers to raise issues of concern. Sundale prepared preliminary draft plans and presented those to a public meeting in montville on June 3 this year.

Sundale envisages building 112 two and three-bedroom units in stages, the units then being sold to owneroccupiers. There would also be a wellness centre for community use and a community centre for residents and guests.

“We are proposing a true community development where the economic benefit will be felt throughout the local business and community,” Sundale CeO Glen bunney said.

“Without the support of the montville community this project will not go forward.” mr bunney said it could be up to a year before Sundale is

in a position to seek approval from the State Government under the Retirement Villages Act. The proposal would also then require development approval from Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

“Although the proposal was generally well received and the majority of the feedback at this meeting was positive, concerns were raised about the size of the proposed development and the conditions under which it might be permitted,” mr Patterson said.

It is understood that some residents are concerned that the some of the proposed development is outside the

urban footprint and there is no sewerage or water infrastructure, although montville itself does not have these services.

An anonymous circular recently distributed throughout the montville area seeking to stop the development had livened the debate, although the mVA was “keen to limit the debate to facts rather than emotive hearsay”.

“Unfortunately, much of the current debate is premature because many of the concerns raised by the mVA have not yet been addressed and detailed planning has not been undertaken,” mr Patterson added. montville Chamber of Commerce president Allan Rhode said the chamber was adopting a neutral stance at this early stage of inquiry. mr Rhode said his personal opinion was that having a local retirement complex would allow residents to remain community members longer, instead of being forced to leave due to their inability to cope with acreage living. mr bunney said Sundale plans significant ongoing community consultation, has a newsletter in production and will hold the next community meeting in due course.

O THe SelF-STYled National economic Summit has come and gone, and despite the best efforts of its media sponsors to keep its memory intact, in a week it will have faded as the next front page comes along. So before the headlines turn into fish and chip wrappers, let us see what, if anything, was achieved.

On one level the summit must be accorded a success; there was no public brawling, and if any of the participants picked each others’ pockets or nicked any of the cutlery, they did so discreetly.

There was a spirit of good will around the talk fest, and a measure of consensus; at the end of the day everyone declared that the problem was serious and urgent, productivity need to be increased, tax reform initiated and a review of retirement incomes considered. The bleeding obvious was more celebrated lavishly, fulsomely: everyone agreed about everything. but that, of course, was why the summit was in the end, irrelevant.

Politics in Australia is not about peace and harmony, it is an adversarial process in which competing ideas and interests have to be debated and hammered out. If it was as easy as sitting down for a day in the board room of kPmG, there would be no problems to solve.

The summiteers started by insisting that everything was on the table, nothing should be ruled in or out. but in fact Tony Abbott and bill Shorten had already ruled a lot of things out and declared many others to be non-negotiable.

They would be fully entitled to say to the summiteers: well, if you’re so smart, why don’t you get yourselves elected to parliament and show us how it ought to be done? but that is not how the summiteers operate. They prefer to stand apart from the bear pit, urging on the combatants as they act as spruikers and critics.

Some commentators, who should know better, have drawn a comparison with the economic summit convened by bob Hawke in 1983. The difference was that Hawke’s meeting was a real summit – one with a top, and the top was Hawke himself. It had an agenda and an aim: to secure and implement the Prices and Incomes Accord.

And Hawke made it clear that no-one was going to be

allowed to leave until the job was done. It was not scheduled for a single, comfortable day off; it would take however long was necessary to sign on the dotted line.

Some of those summoned began to talk of forming an escape committee; it was banter, of course, but it captured the mood.

Hawke drove most of the process himself as chairmen; at times he gave way to his Treasurer, Paul keating, who may have lacked Hawke’s consummate negotiating skills but was equally determined to keep the delegates to the point.

The exercise was not an academic one, a conversation in which various view points could be aired and diverse options could be canvassed: it was about an outcome – Hawke’s chosen outcome. eventually the job was done: consensus through exhaustion, perhaps, but a foundation which was to underpin the enduring reforms processes which secured the AlP its longest term of government since federation.

The reason it worked was that it was not a polite and civilised public forum between well-credentialed outsiders but a cold, hard master class in politics, run by the professionals for the professionals.

If you are looking for political change, you need the politicians to bring it about. Anything else is just self indulgent grandstanding. but the summit may not be a complete waste: why not translate some of the universal bonhomie into something more permanent? many if not all the summiteers expressed scepticism, even incredulity, about the government’s version of economic reality: the analysis, the projections, the forecasts were considered wildly self serving, if not downright dodgy.

So how about employing some of the vast resources available to the participants to provide more sensible alternatives?

An independent, rigorous and transparent version of what is going on could be valuable to the public and thus perhaps influential to the politicians.

If qualified, honest, impartial panellists could be assembled they could aid the whole process of reform immeasurably through renewing public trust alone.

The agenda would be formidable. Obviously there would have to be a basic reassessment of both government and private spending, and all the benefits and concessions that go with it – how much infrastructure, for instance, is in fact a subsidy to the big corporations to service their roads, railways, ports and harbours? do the exports which flow from them really add up to the national benefit or are much of them carved out in company profits, and what proportion of those profits go off shore to the multinationals?

How much tax do they pay, and how much should they pay? The whole question of tax, who pays what and who can avoid it, should be scrutinised at arms length from stakeholders and interest groups.

And then there are the specific questions – a good one to start would be climate change, added as no more than an afterthought by the summit. How much do we really need fossil fuels and what are the positives and negatives of continuing to rely on them – and for how long in the future?

To what extent, if any, should we move towards renewables, and if so what kind? Solar, wind, hydro, geo– thermal – what is the most desirable mix? And what about nuclear – remember, we’re just talking cost-benefit, not politics.

So is Tony Abbott’s direct Action Plan the best economic solution to reducing emissions – indeed, will it even work?

Should an emissions Trading Scheme be reintroduced, and if so, what are the implications our own economy and what are the implications for the international market? If we accept that global warming is inevitable anyway, what is the most efficient and equitable way of dealing with the consequences?

Obviously there are plenty of other people pondering some of those questions, but most of them have their own agendas and few are trusted by an understandably sceptical public, tired of spin and propaganda.

If the talkfest were to give the voters just a few of the answers they could trust, it might indeed endure past the 24 hour news cycle.

So back from the summit, get back to earth: it’s time to stop chatting and start working.

Maleny Rangers U15 Boys are top of the ladder

OACH PeTeR WIllIAmSON couldn't be more proud. His U15 soccer team go into the finals - with 18 games so far this season, the team have 16 wins, 1 draw and only 2 losses.

As a club, the maleny Rangers FC have not been fortunate enough to be part of the finals in this age group for the past four years. but it has been a great season for maleny Rangers FC - the U14 boys made finals and the U12 boys are still in contention with the second final this weekend.

The club is chuffed to have three junior competitive teams

reach the finals from the one club, especially from one of the smaller clubs on the Sunshine Coast!

Peter said the team have kept scoring despite injuries, school commitments and red cards. "many of these U15 boys have played at maleny Rangers from U6 onwards and have stuck it out through thick and thin, the ups and downs and the wins and losses. As a coach, I could not ask for a better bunch of kids!"

He lIONS mOUNTAIN View Challenge is coming on Sunday October 11 and last year mdSRC were delighted to award a new category, the 10km Group Challenge Award, to the team ‘maleny blue Runners’.

Runners Nathan Arrowsmith, Gary myers, keith Sherwood and mike Foale had a combined age of 257, proving age is no barrier!

As keith confirmed, “We will be back again for 2015!

Nathan and I are committed. Gary may be with us, but I'm not sure yet. “mike's granddaughter and her boyfriend will be visiting maleny and intend to join us in the maleny blue team. mike himself intends to run in a shorter event this year, so won't be in the team.

“We all started running together as a group last year, because of a common interest in running and fitness.”

As the defenders now of this award, the maleny blue Runners hope to see more clubs getting on board to challenge their supremacy.

Anyone can participate - you can walk or run or combine both to suit over the various categories.

It is a fantastic day. with people of all abilities and ages supporting the lions. even the littlies can be involved on the oval, courtesy maleny little Athletics Centre volunteers.

HANGe IS ONe of the only constants in life, and while we may bemoan the Wendy Rosenfeldt unpredictability of the weather, our moods and our fortune, understanding the patterns in nature can help us to navigate through life.

Vedic knowledge gives us the understanding of all the cycles in life; from our internal biorhythms to the planetary movements, from the daily cycles to the seasonal changes. It can also give us the understanding of how these cycles impact on us with our unique mind/body type.

Ayurveda unravels the mystery of why certain foods are good for some people but create discomfort in others. To get the right answer to an equation you need to know about to the two things that are being added together. An individual with an excess of earthy kapha can feel sluggish and congested if they have milk or yogurt, whereas airy Vata can feel grounded and nourished.

We accept the influence of the sun and moon on our health, emotionally and physically. The rays of the sun bring us vitamin d and increase our levels of feel good serotonin. The moon governs women’s monthly cycles and we often feel our emotions fluctuate with the lunar waxing and waning. We are also subject to the influence of the other planets in our solar system.

However it is not that these far distant planets create some effect on us, they are just reflections of the impulses of nature present everywhere. The universe is made up of patterns of intelligence. These patterns are seen at the subtlest level of the cell and even the dNA, as well as the celestial bodies.

The same energy that characterises the planet mars can be

found in the amygdala which is involved in emotional reactions, the mitochondria responsible for energy production, all processing systems in the body such as digestion and metabolism, the middle of the day, Tuesdays, Summer and midlife. When you understand the patterns you are better able to predict when an imbalance will manifest. The Pitta tendency towards excess heat, which can cause irritability, skin rashes and hot flushes, is most common in the Pitta times of day, of the week, of the year and of the life cycle.

Vedic Astrology can predict times in our life that different qualities will be stronger. This relates not only to health but to opportunities for success in career, travel, buying a house, finding a partner as well as tendencies for having accidents, losing money or difficulties in relationships. knowing what the current trend is can help us to embrace what life is bringing us, look after what is a weakness and let go of what is not being supported.

Watering garden beds and plants using a bucket or watering can is a great way to establish and maintain plants and reduce water wastage. but while buckets and watering cans are efficient, cheap, and easy to use, they have the potential to cause injury if you lift or carry them incorrectly.

Wrist, shoulder and back pain is more likely when carrying heavy buckets and watering cans, and lifting awkward loads. Warming up with a few stretches can make a difference, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth stretching a bit more when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re done.

Here are some timely tips to minimise the risk of injury when lugging litres of water around to help keep both your garden and your body really healthy: â&#x20AC;˘ Always think before you lift. â&#x20AC;˘ When lifting, remember to bend your knees and not your back. Never twist your body when your back is bent. â&#x20AC;˘ Choose a bucket or watering can with a wide grip to reduce hand and wrist pain. â&#x20AC;˘ Never overfill your bucket. Only carry as much weight as you know you can lift comfortably. Tip: half fill buckets to lighten the load and help avoid wrist and shoulder pain. â&#x20AC;˘ Try lifting two lighter buckets rather than one heavy bucket, so the load is distributed equally on each side of the body. Tip: use two-litre milk bottles for watering.
