Maleny High – one of the first carbon neutral schools in Australia?

T

HiS MONTH, the Maleny High Environment Committee launch a Solar Panel Project, an initiative which aims to make Maleny High one of the first carbon neutral schools in Australia.

Treasurer of the Environment Committee, Year 12 student Manikya Alister, says the committee has been working hard to change the culture within the school towards rubbish, recycling and the environment.

"We are trying to minimize our impact on the environment; global warming is a big thing. Potentially other schools might follow us, and we want to inspire other students."

Supported by staff, the 12 committee members span across all grades, with President, Lilly Hamilton-Delmas and vice President, Catherine Hills they are motivating classmates to care for their environment.

They have run competitions for whole school litter clean-ups, recycling challenges and earth hour, installed bird boxes plus purchased paper recycling bins for classes and staffrooms.

"We've got a lot more to do - a lot of fundraising and other initiatives for World Environment Week. But this is our main project," said Manikya.

They need to raise funds for two sets of panels valued at $35,000 each, and although they are talking to MP Andrew Powell about grants, they are also inviting businesses to help sponsor the initiative.

While it is a big project, it is one they all believe will be very beneficial to the school, to play their part in making Australia environmentally sustainable. I first met Bill Richardson fifteen years ago. Bill was a member of Maleny LETS (Local Energy Transfer System) which promotes cashless trading.

Little did I know that this softly spoken, gentle man who wore loose fitting clothes and a cloth bag over his shoulder, had been an instigator of change in Australian politics during the Whitlam era.

iLL RiCHARDSON was born in 1933 at Condobolin, NSW on the Broken Hill line. His father was a fettler on the railway and mother performed home duties. A phrase coined to describe women of those times.

As i explored Bill’s life journey we talked about the events that shape us into who we are. For Bill the word discrimination figured prominently.

“When i was eight a police sergeant at Condobolin shot dead an aborigine at the front of our house and i’ve always

carried that memory. i didn’t witness it but i heard the shot.

“The police sergeant was exonerated because the aboriginal man threatened him. The aboriginal man had a stick and the police sergeant had a gun,” said Bill still affected by the recall.

“At age twelve my parents were about to split and so i was sent to my grandparents in Sydney. They owned a greengrocers/milk bar in Balmain. i was enrolled in a State School – a commercial school for boys where i learnt shorthand.” it was this skill, one he still uses today, that impacted on Bill’s life in ways unforeseen.

“i passed the Public Service entrance exam when i was fifteen.

Because of my shorthand knowledge i was employed in the public service section of the New South Wales Police Department. “i joined the union – the Public Service Association of NSW, on the same day. Ten years later i became an industrial Officer of that union. “in 1956 i joined the Balmain Branch of the Australian Labor Party. Historians record it as the first branch, formed in 1891. Last August i was awarded Life Membership of the ALP.” As Bill’s career unfolded he became increasingly interested in issues of discrimination. in 1973 he was elected to the position of Federal Secretary of the Australian Council of and Professional Salaried Associations (ACSPA). it was formed in 1956 and represented white-collar and pink-collar (women) workers in private industry and in State and Commonwealth public services.

“Soon after taking up the position of Federal Secretary i contacted a young feminist working at the victorian Teachers union. i wanted her ideas on how we could up the ante in favour of positive change for women in the Australian workforce. “i still have the notes she made of our conversation. it is on notepaper headed From the Desk of a Liberated Woman.

“We came up with ideas to put to the ACSPA Federal Executive on how to promote the interests of working women generally. On my recommendation the Executive established a committee on women’s issues.” in 1974 Bill put a successful submission to the international Women’s Year Secretariat for funding to establish Australia’s first Working Women’s Centre. it was opened in Melbourne in 1975 (the uN international Women’s Year).

ACSPA also initiated a conference on Lesbians and Homosexuals in the Workplace, which Bill chaired.

Bill showed me a poster he authorised headed ‘White Collar Workers for Whitlam’. it was to promote the historic rally held in Melbourne’s city square on December 2, 1975.

“Gough was a great intellect and he displayed it on many occasions. Some people would say with arrogance, but i never experienced that with Gough,” said Bill.

Retiring from full-time work in 1983, Bill continued to work three days a week on special projects at the ACTu. Thirteen years later he and his family settled in Maleny. “i was only here ‘five minutes’ when i became secretary of the Maleny Community Centre, then later joined the committee of the film society as manager. i was also a

volunteer at the Neighbourhood Centre and have been one of the admin team for Maleny LETS for a number of years.”

For the past two years Bill has been an Ambassador for White Ribbon Australia - men against violence against women.

He shares, “There’s always been domestic violence and some women are violent towards men. But so far this year sixty-nine women have died!

Police around Australia are called out every two minutes to a domestic violence situation! “i sent a personal submission to the State Government’s Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family violence in Queensland. “i made various suggestions compiled from a community collective.

A number of these have been incorporated in the recommendations.”

Bill Richardson travelled the world, rubbed shoulders with indira Ghandi and Nelson Mandela and been involved in the heady days of change in Australian politics.

And, in his role as Secretary of the Pacific Trade union Forum, 1981 – 1983, stood against the French for a nuclearfree Pacific and supported objectives to raise living standards of workers in small island nations.

Bill emphasised, “Nothing is achieved by working alone. You have to be collaborative, distill ideas, then come up with the best possible solution to a problem.”

A proud family man Bill has two sons, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He and Jenni Matthews have been together since 1988 and have a daughter.

Now, an integral part of the Maleny community you will find Bill sitting at his card table representing White Ribbon Australia outside iGA on November 25 selling $2 ribbons to bring awareness to domestic violence.

The ribbons will also be available at Maple Street Co-op and the upFront Club.

Bill describes his involvement in this united Nations day as, “The last campaign of my lifetime!”

As the Australian representative on the expert team for Forest and Fire, she fears that in the future, our freedom to locate our homes adjacent to National Parks, something many Hinterlanders hold dear, could be in jeopardy.

LIMATE CHANGE SCIENTIST Allyson Williams of Maleny has no doubt that climate change is real and it is here.

“Climatologically speaking, it is such an extremely interesting time’, said Allyson. “In 2014, we had the warmest year, globally, on record, and it’s looking like 2015 will be even warmer.

“Changes are now showing in the instrumental records. To top it off, we are in the biggest El Niño event on record. It is huge!”

Allyson’s main concern is how the changing weather

patterns will affect not only different ecosystems, but the people who live within them. Each region, environment, and industry has its own risks and vulnerabilities and each must be addressed independently.

The coastal strip is concerned with rising sea levels; the Hinterland will closely watch changes in rainfall, increased erosion and bushfires.

As a researcher at the International Centre for Applied Climate Science at the University of Southern Queensland, Allyson is well qualified for the task of assessing the readiness of communities to face extremes.

Her PhD, from Monash University, looked at the effect of climate change on bushfires.

“My job is to assess the level of climate risk and how adaptable environments, industries, and people are. Once we identify their level of vulnerability, we can focus resources to address the risks.

“And of course this is all a function not only of climate change, but also of other converging factors such as

infrastructure, biodiversity, available resources, political and community resolve.”

The management of water (at a personal, community and governmental level), by wise storage of water during flood events (including lessening the effects of evaporation) and controlled use during drought, plays an important part in ensuring communities are resilient.

Many who live on the range are only too aware of the threat of erosion to their properties and access roads. Future planning, and planting, will be needed in susceptible areas.

“Erosion will also have a huge impact on our rivers with a flow-on effect to the species that rely on clear, flowing streams. Whole ecosystems could change.”

Bushfires are a major risk on the Hinterland. Allyson explains: “A combination of unseasonal rain, extreme weather events and more days of extreme temperatures provides the scenario for the risk of increased bushfires.

“This year, for example, we have seen reasonable rainfall in the past few months resulting in relatively good growth of grasses and understory.

“With the El Nino likely to increase daily maximum temperatures and evaporation, the fire risk will increase during late spring and early summer.”

A lot of us choose to live on the urban/rural interface, particularly in Maleny, but the time may come when a changing climate increases hazardous fire environments to the extent where we need to make tough decisions about allowing people to live right next to a national park.

Allyson says, “We need to think about the consequences of our choices”.

This is a real issue for people who enjoy a sense of freedom living where they wish, secure in the knowledge that they can phone the "Firies" if they find themselves in trouble. it may well become the norm for people to have to demonstrate that they have a fire action plan.

Hinterland residents are, largely, more progressive when it comes to seeking alternative ways to deal with endemic problems. it is not uncommon for us to grow a good deal of our own fresh foods, collect rainwater, construct dams and be self-sufficient in power.

We all need to play our part in reducing our carbon footprint to help combat climate change. “i believe, and hope, that in the not too distant future our concept of energy supply will change”, said Allyson.

“We may not be able to unplug from the grid as the people of the tiny NSW village of Tyalgum are planning, but i think we need to increase the general awareness of future changes and what we can do to avoid the consequences on an individual level.”

Allyson is also a fine violinist, playing with the quality Davonski Concert Orchestra and also the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra. in an event dear to her heart, she will be accompanying the Maleny Singers in a performance of Highlights from Carmen at the Maleny Community Centre on November 7 and 8—to raise funds for the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade, bringing all her passions together.

Kelly Cork: Plectrums and pedals

Kelly Cork has been nominated as a finalist in four categories by the Australian Songwriters’ Association in their annual, national awards.

His well-received CD ‘One of these Days’ will be launched at the Maleny RSL on November 21.

This much "loved character, brilliant songwriter and musician, giver, cyclist and friend" talks to HT's Gay Liddington about his music, family and growing up in Maleny.

iNGER SONGWRiTER Kelly Cork describes himself as, always a music nutter. But it was visits to his grandfather’s home as a lad that helped embed the music in his soul.

“My grandfather was still living out on the dairy. i stayed there a lot helping out with the milking. He was a beautiful squeeze box player.

“We’d shared the same room and i remember him playing when i was going to sleep and when i was waking up.”

Add to that other local influences and the young Kelly Cork was on music’s yellow brick road. “i had a lot to do with the Burgum boys and old Wal Lawley. i was around a lot of music people and the old time dance bands in those early days. Grab your partner for the Gypsy Tap and all that! “…and i was intrigued by the sound of the guitar.

Especially when they played ‘Snoopy vs the Red Baron’ - that guitar solo had me. i knew i couldn’t not do it…i couldn’t put the guitar down!”

Kelly’s introduction to his first guitar came via his brother when he was twelve years old. “My brother had been given this guitar and for three days told mum that he was going to be Elvis. Then, he pushed it under the bed, but i dragged it out and couldn’t put it away.

i owe a great debt to other band members for getting things rolling.”

Speaking of his latest CD, ‘One of these Days’ Kelly says, “This project is off my own bat and i’ve called in people i’ve always wanted to come and play, such as Kev Bennett from ‘The Flood’. That guy is an Aussie institution!

“My whole thing is to acknowledge just how many people help me. it’s them that create what i’ve done or do. i could be destitute tomorrow but i’d be a millionaire.”

“i couldn’t play for a long while but just accompanied myself singing and bashing!”

The young self-taught musician was playing in the Maleny pub by the time he was sixteen. “No PA system, no nothing. Mum was the local bar maid so gigs were no problem! That’s where it really kicked off,” said Kelly.

The Cork family are among the early pioneers of Maleny and were part of the flourishing dairy and timber cutting industries.

“My dad used to drop trees for a living like his father before him. He was a very well-known saw doctor. The saw doctors were treated like royalty because the mills were the life blood…employment, bread and butter.” “in 1970 dad set up a garage where the lolly shop is now in Maple Street. The building had belonged to an undertaker. The little shed down the back was full of coffins! That was my little shed. in its day it was a cracker! i was always tinkering with motor bikes, bikes, lawn mowers and small engines.” “in the early seventies during the Maleny Street Carnival we used to have a little go-cart derby race from the pre-school in Cedar Street and down the main street. i built a go-cart out of a coffin. My coffin cart was a beauty!”

After the sale of the garage, Kelly continued with the mechanical and engineering work including fixing classic motor bikes.

Bicycles became more a part of the towns’ recreation, and so did Kelly’s love of the machines. “ i love tinkering and building bikes and making all the little bits that no one wants to know about. This game is dead and buried as far as hands on, making components and keeping things going. But i’ll still do it, in between

that and songs.”

Kelly gathers the bare frames, has them painted, builds the wheels and completes the bike. Generally they are sold prior to him even beginning. He scours the world for the correct parts for his special projects.

“Anyone can wander into a shop now and buy a modern carbon fibre you-beaut rocket ship. They’re great but they’ve got the soul of a digital watch! i love the old things. i love getting back to where i began.”

Kelly also takes his love of bikes on the road and owns up to being a member of the Lycra Lizards. “We’re always out there. it’s a comical bunch!” he adds. inspired by singer songwriters of the early seventies such as Bob Dylan and Neil Young, Kelly Cork began to write his own songs. He describes those musicians as the true story tellers.

Australian songwriters also figured in the mix citing Andy Durant from the Adelaide band ‘Stars’ and Richard Clapton among those who turned out the heartfelt, gutsy songs.

“Music was just there, it has always been there. i’ve always done my own thing…even way back then i was writing songs for our band and doing them in our own way. it just progressed from there and a dozen CDs later, here i am.”

Speaking of song writing Kelly laughed and said, “i can write songs like a bodily function. Sometimes…it just falls out! Like my hair…it just falls out!”

With his band days behind him, Kelly now travels with his acoustic guitar attending mainly festival showcase gigs.

“The band things are great but they are consuming, whereas my own little solo thing is easy for me to control.

YNETTE AND ROY HiLL moved from ipswich four years ago to retire on a beautiful seven-acre (almost three hectare) property in North Maleny.

The land was mostly cleared and grassed with some rainforest patches and a gully, constituting an enormous lifestyle change from their home in Camira - a two-acre block, where they planted some natives, but next-to-nothing else, as the soil was mostly sand.

They were both passionate about the environment and gardens. Lyn's special area of interest being the growth and care of plants and creatures while Roy's interest lay more in mowing around them! upon reaching Maleny and settling into their new, lush home, the first thing they did was join the Barung Landcare Association, become volunteers and contact 'Land for Wildlife'.

"We were interested in revegetating a large portion of the land, which had been cleared for dairy farming," said Lyn. "We wanted to plant Australian native species to encourage wildlife back into the area. it was a huge task - a long-term vision - so we knew we were going to need expert advice and assistance".

Land for Wildlife Extension Officer, Nick Clancy, came to inspect the property and the assessment showed that, because clearing had been so severe, some criteria were not met for it to be declared a 'Land for Wildlife' property.

However, there were two very important features of the property that were of interest to LFW: firstly, that the gully on it lies at the top of the Bridge Creek Catchment area, eventually flowing into Baroon Pocket Dam; and secondly that three Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines (Pararistolochia praevenosa) were growing in the rainforest area.

From this latter discovery, a new life interest dawned for Lyn. in his recommendations for revegetation, Nick listed all the plants that existed on the property, suggesting which to retain (Lilly Pillies, Red Cedar and Brown Burrajon for example) and which to remove (like lantana and privet).

He also indicated which plants were not on the property that would be helpful to add (e.g. Bumpy Ash Flindersia schottia). All of these were available at the extensive Barung Landcare Nursery, close at hand in Porters Lane, North Maleny.

To finance the revegetation effort, Lyn and Roy applied for a Landholders Environment Grant through the Sunshine

Coast Regional Council.

"We were delighted when the grant was approved. This meant we were able to contract Barung Landcare to carry out the clearing of weeds and to dig the holes for the tubestock to be planted," Lyn said.

"We planted 150 trees at this stage, then completed stages 2 and 3 in the following years. Grants are offered yearly and we were successful each time".

Now, four years on, Lyn and Roy have planted in excess of 500 trees, all purchased from Barung Landcare. Many other natives have sprung up from seeds that were already present in the soil, but were inhibited from germinating until the non-natives had been removed. "i really have to commend the Sunshine Coast Council for what they are doing to help the environment with their support to landholders," said Lyn. "Compared with councils in other places we have lived, they are outstanding".

When asked what changes had taken place since that time, Lyn commented, "One of the most noticeable changes has been the increase in birdlife, along with echidnas, wallabies, some snakes and now, the rare Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, Ornithoptera richmondia".

of vine that the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly caterpillar eats and is listed as a rare species under the Nature Conservation Act. The butterfly is listed as 'vulnerable to extinction' with widespread clearing for farmland and the introduction of the 'Dutchman's Pipe' largely responsible for the decline.

The beautiful flower of the Dutchman's Pipe vine also attracts the RBB but its leaves are poisonous to the larvae.

“When Nick pointed out the significance of the butterfly and the vines that were growing here, i resolved to make it my personal cause to help them re-populate and flourish" said Lyn. So three years ago, Lyn planted a number of vines in different locations to see how they coped in different conditions. Generally, it is recommended that RBB vines are planted in semi-shade, so she was surprised to find that the two vines growing on a trellis in full sun have flourished.

From the first planting of these additional vines three years ago, it took until early February this year for the first caterpillar to appear, followed by many more over the next week. By mid- March, the first male had hatched.

Since then, over eight chrysalises in full sunny locations and two in semi-shade, stayed put through the winter months. A butterfly can remain happily in its chrysalis for more than 180 days.

Lyn has observed that they turn a different colour when they are about to 'hatch' and you can see the shape of the folded wings inside.

Lyn and Roy have now planted ten more vines around the property and Roy's interest in the butterflies has increased. "i am checking the vines regularly to see if any eggs or new caterpillars are on the leaves; all the vines are flowering and very healthy " said Lyn. We especially love to teach our grandchildren about the importance of nature and the part we play in the cycle of life".

HARLOTTE RiCHARDS and Jasmine Cameron, both 11 years, have been selected to train with The Australian Ballet School in Melbourne.

Recognised as gifted students, they will work with teachers of international renown. it is a great privilege, as about 55 girls auditioned in their age group in Brisbane alone.

The School is Australia’s centre for elite classical dance, developing artistic leaders of the future. it produces dancers who possess a strong classical technique with great emphasis on artistry, purity of line, co-ordination and quality of movement.

The girls will be part of The ABS interstate Training Program, which allows them to continue their normal schooling, remain training at En Pointe Dance Centre in West Caloundra, then take intense training sessions in Melbourne in their holidays.

Charlotte said,”i feel honoured to be accepted into The Australian Ballet School and can't wait to go down there to dance.” it will take great courage for Charlotte and Jasmine to go from Maleny to Melbourne, where they will be surrounded by elite dancers.

Fortunately, they are both quietly resilient and close friends, so they can support each other as they take the journey to enter this new and challenging world.

And when you are as passionate as these two, you are naturally spurred on by sheer determination. As En Pointe Director, Leticia Webb, says “a hurricane could go through the studio and these two girls wouldn’t notice, they would just keep dancing.”

En Pointe has been helping prepare Charlotte and Jasmine for an exciting world of dance.

They have just returned from their European Dance Tour, where they immersed themselves in the world of dance, including personalised ballet classes with four Principal Dancers of the Royal Ballet Company.

The girls undertook daily training in London at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and graced the stage of this famous Opera House, along with a personalised backstage tour of The Royal Ballet’s magnificent costume wardrobe and

Principal artists’ dressing rooms.

They were inspired by performances such Swan Lake at the London Coliseum, and even saw the burlesque cabaret, Lido, in France…a bit of an eye opener for such young girls!

Charlotte and Jasmine both said the trip was amazing and unfolded a new world of ballet to them.

Another highlight of their trip was going to Germany to catch up with 20-year-old Maleny girl Georgina Hills (previously featured in Hinterland Times).

Georgina started full-time ballet training when only 11 years old, completing her academic studies through the Brisbane School of Distance Education.

Her dedication, discipline and strong desire, led to her being offered a two-year scholarship to complete her ballet training at the elite Hamburg Ballet School.

At the completion of her training, Georgina auditioned for

ballet companies across Europe and was offered a contract with the internationally-acclaimed Hamburg Ballet Company (director, John Nuemeier) – a remarkable achievement.

Although on a tight schedule with training and rehearsals, Georgina generously took time to show Jasmine and Charlotte around the Hamburg Ballet Centre (Ballettzentrum Hamburg), an inspirational facility filled with music, ballet studios and memorabilia.

“It's hard to imagine Georgie was at En Pointe just a few years ago. She looks so happy in Hamburg,” Jasmine shared.

Both Jasmine and Charlotte have had a successful year of dance competing in Eisteddfods in group, solo and duo sections and received many prizes and encouraging comments from adjudicators all around South East Queensland.

This is a great achievement as they are relatively late starters in the world of ballet, with some children starting as young as two!

Charlotte and Jasmine are focused on their upcoming Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet exams, and the excitement is building at the ballet studio as the girls prepare for this year’s concert on December 5 in the Caloundra Events Centre.

The theme is ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and who knows…. there may be a little girl or boy in the audience who will also become entranced by the magical world of dance.

E ARE JuST A BiT chuffed here at the Hinterland Times. Heatley and i arrived home a little heavier from Brisbane last month after the Queensland Country Press Association Annual Awards.

The HT team has earned the coveted Best Newspaper in Country Qld 2015 (twice in one year!) for Best Newspaper employing 2 or less (or FTE) journalists, any circulation, and Best Newspaper - more than 10,000 circulation!

Our team brought home five wins for the paper, and together with our other paper, Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News, surprised us with one third of the trophies and a quarter of the awards.

Once again, our little independent free monthlies were up against 23 other regional papers, as far away as Longreach, including APN papers with impressive full-time staffers.

Judges recognised it was a real team effort: "Big congratulations to all involved in producing some extremely high quality newspapers. it was evident all departments, production, sales and editorial worked together as a team to produce the entries submitted."

in fact, thanks to Heatley, Karen and our graphic artists' expertise, we dominated the advertising sections.

The QCPA recognised her "glowing testimonials" but said what set Karen apart was the many examples of above-and-beyond duty - like delivering papers, promoting via Facebook and even sweeping floors for some busy clients!

They couldn't split it for Best Locally Produced Print Advertising Campaign: "A tie, both from the Hinterland Times, for the All Energy HQ campaign and Maleny Cruise and Travel campaign.

Both were campaigns that sought to educate the reader/prospect to the benefits of what was on offer. “Both were informative, delivering a great sales message, and reinforced that message with each publication. Both campaigns were very well targeted to their prospects."

We were Finalist for Best Advertisement, Highly Commended for Best Locally Produced Print Advertisement (Terrace Seafood Restaurant), Best Printed Commercial Feature (Gallery Trail) and Best Newspaper Printed Supplement "Run of Press" - (Food Drink and Dine).

Bob Wilson gained second place for Journalistic Excellence - individual.

Judges stated that the goal of a publication is to not only deliver a professional news service, but also to show leadership within the community. HT was Highly Commended for the Best Printed Community Promotion for our work with Arts Connect and MDSRC's Aussie Day Expo. i was delighted with scoring (especially as i was trained as a health worker) the Journalistic Excellence - Weighted, and Best Community Promotion for the Community News. i must also thank our editorial team: Dale, victoria, Gay and Bob. A big thanks to Debbie and Leeza as well - as we farewell them from their roles at HT. The guest speaker reminded us how compelling newspapers are for helping local businesses succeed, how they inspire young people and that paper and ink is one of the most effective means of communication.

They reinforced that online searches are driven by offline messages, and an increasing trend of "de-teching" or seeking out physical objects and experiences, by a generation who has "never known a world without the internet" (industry Report 2014 value of Paper and Print).

Our team also sends hearty thanks to the Queensland Country Press Association and judges.

So, now off to the Sunshine Coast Business Awards early this month - we hope to see more Hinterland businesses there!

Coffee Culture

Growing up in western Turkey to Kurdish parents mapped a course for Faruk (Frank) Genel, one that would lead him to Australia, and eventually Maleny.

Gay Liddington met with him to talk cultural challenges, career choices and coffee.

“i

WAS BORN in the west because my father worked for the government as an agricultural technician.

Then, after fifteen years in 1998, he was sent back to the east where i lived for ten years until i was twenty-five,” says Frank.

During his formative years Faruk was immersed in the western culture of Turkey. He forged strong friendships in spite of the fact he was a Kurd. The next ten years with Kurdish people allowed him the opportunity to know the place of his ancestors.

“i grew up and couldn’t speak properly with my grandmother. She couldn’t speak Turkish and my parents didn’t teach me Kurdish,” says Frank. He adds that his parents had to speak quietly because it was against the law to speak the Kurdish language.

Aspects of war brushed the young Faruk when he visited his grandmother from a city in the west to a town in the east.

A soldier would enter the bus at the many checkpoints along the way to check identity cards. The passengers fear was palpable.

Frustration and anger permeated the mix as the process was repeated…especially when travellers were taken from the bus and would not return.

Compulsory army recruitment hung like a shroud over the young people of Turkey whether in the east or west. For Frank, if he fought in the Turkish Army he would be fighting his own people, the Kurds, his relatives. This clearly was not an option for him. “in the army Kurds and Turks died for nothing. Kurds just want respect and legal recognition while the Turks are political pawns in their compulsory army service.

“The conflict continues today but we are trying to make a peace agreement because that’s what everyone wants.”

Frank made his way to Australia, but arriving in a new country presented its problems. Language was confronting; he spoke limited English.

Also, in comparison to the Kurdish culture which is outgoing and social, a twenty-four hour whirl of activity, Australia was a culture shock. initially, he felt isolated.

Dandenong, victoria was Frank’s first home. “As an immigrant i went to school for six months and then continued at TAFE college to improve my English because language is the only way.”

Factory work provided Frank with an income. “That time of working in the factory with other people like Filipino and indians, speaking in broken English with different accents, was like a baby learning to walk in this new country,” says Frank.

Melbourne’s cold weather soon drove Frank to the Sunshine Coast, whilst Australian citizenship enabled him to fulfil a lifelong ambition. He commenced studying international Relations and Political Science at Sunshine Coast university.

Earlier this year Frank spent six weeks in indonesia as part of the university’s Global Opportunities (GO) program to advance his study of the language as his minor subject.

Currently completing a political internship, Frank is inspired by Kurdish politics where it is compulsory to have fifty per cent representation of women in the Democratic People’s Party (HDP).

“The HDP is very colourful and includes many diverse cultures including Kurds, Turks, Armenians, Assyrians,

Jews, Arabs and Romany. it also has many young people and gay representatives in the party,” he boasts. “it is my belief that women in leadership will bring about peace in the world. i am wholeheartedly committed to the cause of women’s empowerment!”

Always one to earn his way Frank Genel turned his hand to a traditional craft, Turkish coffee. This endeavour began in Melbourne. it was Anzac Day in the city.

Frank and his uncle set up a table with a gas burner, pots and cups at three o’clock in the morning.

“After the ceremony finished the people just came…veterans whose fathers had served in Turkey.

Grandfathers told their stories while they were drinking Turkish coffee. Some of them cried. So, that’s how i started the Turkish coffee business,” Frank reflects.

Frank’s first coffee stall on the Sunshine Coast was in Maleny.

Markets and the Maleny Community Centre kiosk provided outlets for the flavour-rich cultural delight. “i found Maleny very accepting. it reminded me of where i am from. in Mesopotamian culture people are conscious and accepting others.

“Community mind is really important. Maleny is unique. i meet a lot of tourists at the Turkish coffee kiosk shop and they find Maleny very friendly. its heart and soul is rich,’ says Frank proudly.

Frank’s coffee stall is an entertaining experience, often an education in ancient archaeology and history. His enthusiasm for ancient Sumerian culture, and nostalgia for the ancient past of Goddess worship, keeps his customers

On October 15, as part of Fair Food Week, the Mayors of 116 major cities around the world simultaneously signed the urban Food Policy Pact (www.foodpolicymilano.org/en/ urban-food-policy-pact-2).

Through the Pact, they are committing themselves to creating more inclusive, resilient and fair local food systems. in total the cities are home to almost 20 percent of the global population.

This is a significant moment for the sustainable food movement globally.

Why do we need a global pact?

Our sustainable food system

With more urban agriculture and sustainable food policies, populations of cities and towns will be able to have more equitable access to better food.

Many cities already have strong urban agriculture policies.

For example, Shanghai has a ring of peri-urban farms providing more than half of its vegetables.

Melbourne City Council is actively implementing its vision for a sustainable and resilient food system - including a town hall veggie plot and a plethora of other innovative initiatives. urban areas already produce over 15 percent of the world’s food, but by 2030, cities will be home to almost 5 billion people.

The key population rise will be mostly in poorer countries where slums are growing and food insecurity is a huge problem. Already 800 million people go to bed hungry every day — something has to change.

The urban Food Policy Pact encourages cities to actively support the development of urban and peri-urban agriculture and to help small local farms in the region. in poorer regions, growing food in the city can improve food security and income, especially for women.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is an extraordinary region for its local and sustainable food initiatives - the food co-op, community-supported agriculture systems, food boxes, farmers’ markets, school gardens, community gardens, festivals and food events.

Plus a diverse range of local farmers and producers, ethical restaurants and cafes.

While the Sunshine Coast Council does not yet have a Sustainable Food Policy, it has a Community Garden Policy.

Together with the council and university i am currently helping form the Sunshine Coast Community Garden Network, through a series of networking and education events, including community garden workshops. i was delighted to discover recently that there are over eighty-five of these projects throughout our region.

They are a wonderful way to connect people with community, place and themselves, creating a local sustainable food system.

Mandatory detentIon I

T HAS TAKEN NEARLY six years of bluster and bombast, but Tony Abbott has finally come clean – or, if you prefer it, has come down and dirty.

Delivering the Margaret Thatcher lecture in honour of his hero, our former Prime Minister admitted that his policy on asylum seekers – on stopping the boats – was never really about saving lives at sea; this was useful politically, but it was a side issue.

The constant sanctimonious homilies on the subject were a cover – sheer humbug.

The real imperative, he warned Europe, was the need to secure the borders. Not to do so would be catastrophic.

The imputation was that if the free flow of refugees was allowed to continue, it would imperil the ethnic and cultural integrity of the entire continent. it was hardly surprising when at least one Tory leader described it as “fascistic.” But most of the rusted-on Thatcherites in his audience were cautiously approving, and Nigel Farage, the leader of the anti-immigration united Kingdom independence Party, called it heroic.

Certainly it struck a chord with the nationalists – the exclusivists, even – among the British who basically disapprove, not only of the European union, but of Europe itself; after all, they say, wogs stop at Calais, so how much more alien can be the barbarian hordes from the Middle East, from Africa and Asia?

But surely Australia is different – it is all too easy to dismiss Abbott as the exception; after all, he is a Pom himself, so what else can you expect.

But the man who supplanted him, Malcolm Turnbull, has already demonstrated that although the words may be more measured, the substance remains the same.

Turnbull does not talk in three word slogans; his tones are mellifluous and hushed, and he speaks more in sorrow than in anger.

But offshore mandatory detention, or whatever he wants to call it, will prevail. There is, he laments, just no alternative.

This is of course untrue; there are plenty of alternatives, but none of them are acceptable to the government, and

probably not to a well-conditioned electorate. But this does not mean that there is not a political problem.

While the formula that no boat people can be settled in Australia remains sacrosanct, their incarceration in Manus island and Nauru is finally producing headlines the government would prefer to avoid.

Tony Abbott would simply have ranted his way through, in the manner of the reconstructed Border Protection Minister, Peter Dutton.

When Amnesty international released a report on the allegations that Australian officials paid people smugglers to return boats to indonesia, and supported the claims with some 68 witnesses and photographic evidence, Dutton called it bullying, and ideological attack, beyond the pale – his suggestion that criticism of his paramilitary force was tantamount to treason.

But Turnbull, and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop were a little more circumspect: they too dodged the substance of the report, but replied simply that Australian domestic laws had been obeyed (which was hardly the point) and that international obligations had been followed (which was, at least, contestable).

The accusations may have been shelved, but they have not been settled.

And Nauru remains a particular sore spot, not only because of the ongoing saga of the unfortunate asylum seeker known as Abyan, but because it has become increasingly clear that for all the talk of sovereignty and independence, the island is very much a client state of Australia, and a somewhat embarrassing one. it remains essentially a closed society.

The Australian columnist Chris Kenny was eventually granted a visa, and good for him, but he admits that the fact that he is a sympathiser of the Pacific solution and former Liberal apparatchik just may have given him privileges denied to more sceptical colleagues.

And the overall secrecy continues; the Save the Children Fund has twice had its officers raided by Nauruan authorities, and has not had its contract renewed by the

Transfield Corporation that runs the place.

The fact that the welfare organisation refused to submit to a bond demanding obedience to Transfield’s charter of gagging whistle blowers, may have had something to do with its effective sacking.

And whistle blowers have been outlawed by the Australian – not the Nauruan – government with the threat of gaol sentences for offenders.

The repressive nature of the regime has been too much for many of the medical professionals, who have staged demonstrations in protest of what they see as the abuse of children in the detention centres, and want to keep them out of the places to protect their health and sanity.

The voters may still support stopping the boats, but the plight of the individuals who have been incarcerated and the manner of their treatment is becoming a problem.

Thus the government is redoubling to its efforts to get them out of the way.

Cambodia, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan – anywhere, as long as they are out of the immediate neighbourhood. And the more venal and impoverished the destination the better.

As far as we know the basket cases of central Africa have not yet been approached with offers, but surely it is only a matter of time.

This solution is obviously no more than buck-passing, but the fact that it is being entertained with some urgency is a sign that, at last, there is a recognition that the policy has to change.

Mandatory detention has run through the governments of Paul Keating, John Howard, Kevin Rudd (twice), Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott, and has become more brutal with each successive incarnation.

Turnbull may be the one to bring about rationality and reform, if not compassion.

Abbott, and his revered mentor Margaret Thatcher, were never for turning. Just perhaps, our new Prime Minister will be innovative, nimble and agile enough to divert from the habits of what has been, for far too many, a lifetime.

ELL THE FAT LADY has sung and it should be over but many of the works entered in Sculpture on the Edge 2015 will be at Spicers Tamarind, 88 Obi Lane Sth, Maleny for a week or two more, some remaining much longer.

The Emu and Brolga from Richard Eggleston have been purchased

by Spicers owner Jude Turner and will remain in the gardens of Tamarind Retreat.

Winner of Spicers Sculpture Award 2015, the enigmatic ‘wherever you go, there you are’ will remain in situ. Designed by Maleny artist, Corrie Wright, as a site-specific ephemeral piece, it always asked to remain there.

Photographic documentation will record the slow absorption of this piece into its rainforest environment.

Supported by SC Council, Sculpture on the Edge 2015 was part of the SC Art Prize. This was a great acknowledgment of the value of this Arts Connect inc. program.

Two new prizes were added; a special Judges Prize and the People’s Choice Award. Prize monies in the Spicers Sculpture Award 2015 were increased to total $12,500.

Not all visitors to the installation left a vote for the People’s Choice Award but there was a very clear winner.

Kenilworth artist Elli Schlunke's lovable Mammuthus won a $1000 prize for Sculpture on the Edge People's Choice

very engaging Mammuthus attracted one quarter of all votes registered, for 19 works. The constant reaction from visitors was surprise, delight and a smile.

Constructed from steel, wire, shade cloth and recycled electrical wiring (the woolly bits), Mammuthus is totally ‘loveable’, and almost believable!

Donated by the Montville village Association and the Montville Chamber of Commerce, the $1000 prize for this award went to Kenilworth artist Elli Schlunke.

The runner-up for People's Choice was the wonderful clay figure, ‘The unveiling’ from Maleny’s Cathy Lawley.

Next popular was ‘Sky Window’ from Peachester artist Hew Chee Fong, and just behind this was Richard Eggleston’s ‘Brolga’.

Two works, from Corrie Wright (Maleny) and Janna Pameijer (Curramore) tied for a close fifth place.

Once again Sculpture on the Edge was a well supported addition to the cultural experiences found in the Hinterland.

uLiE HuTCHiNGS was born in Grafton in 1959. Her ambition on leaving school was to become a jockey but she grew too large. instead, she married John Hutchings who was a top jockey in the Northern Rivers district until he retired in the late 1990s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;i studied commercial art part-time whilst raising our two children.â&#x20AC;? Julie told us. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the same time, i worked as my husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secretary, agent and personal assistant. in 1993, i was invited to join the board of directors of the Clarence River Jockey Club. This was an honour rarely afforded to women. iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always loved horses and i really enjoy painting them. Needless to say i know my subjects well.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many artists find accurately capturing a horse in motion extremely difficult but not Julie,â&#x20AC;? said gallery manager, Lisa Powell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Her expressionistic paintings not only portray the horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s movement but also capture the strength of both horse and jockey.â&#x20AC;?

Several years ago, Julie was instrumental in establishing a life drawing group which still meets once a week in Grafton. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whilst subject matter is important to me, it is the process and journey of the painting that really excites me. iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an intuitive artist. i paint with emotion, energy and expression.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have noticed astute collectors are showing an increasing interest in Julieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nude studies â&#x20AC;&#x201C; both male and female,â&#x20AC;? Lisa told us. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With their soft colours and textures her tasteful paintings fit comfortably into any dĂŠcor.

ORMAN DOBSON iS very clear on where he fits in life: â&#x20AC;&#x153;i am a potter not a ceramicist. i make the pots that potters have always made: bowls, jugs, teapots, plates, vases, ovenware, jars ...â&#x20AC;?

Norman, a trained artist from the National Art School, East Sydney, has enjoyed a long career as an art educator. it has nourished his knowledge of art and craft, which he sees as separate entities. These days, he calls himself a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;veteran potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Norman became fascinated with pottery during the 1950s in Melbourne when he watched David Boyd in his pottery throwing a pot on the wheel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;i was mesmerised to see this lump of clay grow into a bowl under the hands of a master. How creative! The seed that was to grow into my love of pottery had been planted.â&#x20AC;? it took until 1964 for Norman to begin his own investigation into the world of pottery. â&#x20AC;&#x153;i was already a painter, a member of the Contemporary Art Society of NSW, and had exhibited at various galleries, but i had this real need to work with clayâ&#x20AC;?, said Norman.

He built his own wooden kick-wheel, based on an old Cornish design from Wenford Bridge Pottery in the uK, and a coke-fired kiln in his backyard. â&#x20AC;&#x153;i do everything from basicsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;i even used to dig my own clayâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;then i do a lot of experimenting. Every firing is experimental, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always a surprise when i open the kiln. Over the years, we have evolved beautiful glazes.â&#x20AC;?

chemistry in formulating their unique glaze recipes, often incorporating natural materials such as wood ash and rock dust.

“We wanted to use wood ash as a glaze ingredient but we didn’t own a wood stove,” laughs Robin, “so when we went camping we waited until other campers left, then shovelled up the ash from their campfires and took it home”.

Their glazes are named after the districts where they collected the ash: Minnaroo glaze came from Minnamurra Falls and Kangaroo valley.

Norman and Robin love to tell the inside stories of their journey. As a high school art teacher, Norman was posted to various schools. When they moved to Hoskingtown, near Canberra, he wanted to build a double-chambered climbing kiln, but firebricks were prohibitively expensive.

“We came across a derelict sawmill at Queanbeyan”, said Robin. “We couldn’t believe our luck when we found, buried in the ruins of the old furnace, over 2,000 firebricks. it was like an archaeological dig.”

Norman took up the story. “We contacted the authorities who said we could have them, so we hired a truck and took them home.” in 1997, now retired from teaching, Norman and Robin opened Eureka Pottery and Craft Gallery in Montville. it was the only time in his life that Norman considered himself a professional potter.

They closed the gallery in 2001, moved to Maleny and started up a new pottery.

A few years ago they went to China where Norman studied the delicate craft of porcelain, which he loves. “i understood art, so could paint my own designs once i mastered the practice of making porcelain.”

Many Malenyites will remember the highly successful Bowl, Feast and Frolic evening in 2010 held to raise money to go towards the refurbishment of the Maleny Community Centre.

Norman and Robin (then president of the Maleny Film Society) were frequent users of the hall and wanted to help somehow. Norman hit on an idea for a fundraising event which involved him making and donating 250 bowls.

The evening was a huge success, raising around $16,000, and my Norman Dobson bowl remains my own

special soup bowl.

When Norman and Robin realised that he had been potting for 50 years, they felt that a celebration was in order. On Saturday and Sunday November 7 and 8, they will hold a retrospective exhibition on the spacious verandah of their 100-year-old home. Everyone is invited.

Some of the pots on display will be fine examples of past work, but most are from recent firings and definitely for sale—although only cash sales please. i found it fascinating to look at the range of different wares created by this master craftsman. From useful earthy cooking pots to highly refined porcelain teapots.

And everything else between.

All of his pottery is vitrified (like glass), totally waterproof and ovenproof.

Norman’s pots are beautiful to hold and behold. He picked up an exquisitely finished vase and ran his hands over its curves, then handed it to me.

“My pots are meant to be held and used; people should feel the texture and shape. They are living creations.”

uDLO.” There is something satisfying about way that the name of the town rolls off the tongue when the train conductor lets you know the station is coming up. The name itself came from the Gubbi Gubbi people, and means ‘freshwater eel’.

With a population of 1128, Eudlo prides itself on maintaining such a close-knit community within a rapidly developing shire.

Originally settled as a timber town and milling centre, Eudlo has retained the character of a small town as it has developed its cultural goings-on and nearby attractions, such as Louise King’s Dreaming Big concert series, regular dance and yoga classes in the hall, and the Buddhist institute of Chenrezig.

Wander through the main street and see the General Store with its old fashioned petrol pump still in service, Sweethearts Cafe, the little school and fantastic tennis courts.

Even some of the backyards look decorated for an eternal party.

Back in 2013 Artslink Queensland initiative, Animating Spaces, was the catalyst for the Eudlo Hall committee to reinvent itself as a sponsor of the arts and cultural life in Eudlo.

The hall has been reinvigorated, explains Committee President, Peter Driscoll, “On December 6 the Eudlo Hall committee will host the Festival of Small Halls concert in the historic Eudlo Hall for the second time. That’s set to become a Eudlo Hall tradition.” in April 2015 they brought the legendary Neil Murray to Eudlo in a solo concert backed on drums by Maleny’s Peter Hudson. This was followed in October by RuE and Dean Stephenson’s The Juliet Letters, direct from Brisbane Power House and Tasmania’s Dark Mofo Festival. irish Mythen and The Starboard Cannons are the headline acts for the December concert.

Peter continues, “The Hall committee is rewriting its rules of association, to expand its objects beyond mere maintenance of the Hall and Wominjeka Park, to hosting and sponsoring community events.

“The monthly Eudlo Musos open microphone sessions headed by Dr Michael Whiticker have a regular following of musicians and performers from all over.

“And for the past three years the committee has had funding from COTA Qld to run a Seniors Lunch in August to celebrate local elders, with participation by Girl Guides and Palmwoods Singers.”

This popular Hall has a history which dates back to the timber town origins of Eudlo in 1895. The timber for the current structure, which is the third incarnation of the hall, was donated. The last remains of Olsen’s sawmill were dismantled after a fire last year.

Patrons for the regular dances were originally attracted from Mooloolah, Palmwoods, Chevallum and Hunchy. Now they come from as far afield as Brisbane and Hervey Bay. Peter shares how the fundraising is managed and what still needs to be done. “The hall was sustained by a tiny loyal committee before the current committee, but is in need of substantial refurbishment to keep it maintained, and to update the facilities for weddings, parties and community events.

“The current committee keeps track of grants available and has developed expertise in grant writing. Heritage Bank Palmwoods and SCRC have been great supporters for us.

“We supplement those grants for our day-to-day insurance and admin costs by catering for events at the hall…We have become famous for our Dreaming BiG vintage suppers, and homemade goodies at Musos and other concerts and events.”

The community like to show their baking skills by providing the suppers for Dreaming BiG concerts with lace cloths, paper doilies and cake stands. Tea is sipped from china cups or mug at Eudlo Hall. if you attend concerts, Romantic Giants on November 7 or Enchanted Carols on December 12, there will not be a paper plate in sight!

The hall has also become a venue of choice for wedding planners seeking out the genuine untarnished ‘village hall’ experience.

And it doesn’t stop there. various other groups use the hall each week for Karate, Yoga and Creative Dance. it also becomes the voting booth for local, state and federal elections.

Join the Peachester History Committee and the Sunshine Coast Heritage Library for a tour of the historic Peachester Cemetery.

Proclaimed in 1902, the Peachester Cemetery reflects the history of the surrounding district. The headstones tell the stories of early settlement, when life was frequently shortened by accidents or the distance from medical assistance.

Since 2000, the committee has worked closely with the council to care for the cemetery and enhancing its heritage value with memorial plaques for local families and service men and women buried elsewhere.

HAT WE TEND to think of as a traditional Hedge is a one species planting of the same tough, readily pruned, bushy to the ground species that is basically a living fence and not much more than that. However this is a relatively recent invention of our production line landscaping and the Hedges of old contained a diverse range of species and resources for both humans and wildlife.

So moving forward by looking backward, there’s a lot to be learnt from the hedges of old and if planted with local native plants they can provide the visual amenity and screening that we require on property and paddock boundaries and provide valuable habitat for our local wildlife.

Some of the great local plants for creating hedges include most of our Lillypilly’s and Myrtles such as Creek Lillypilly Acmena smithii, Blue Lillypilly - Syzygium oleosum, Silky Myrtle - Decaspermum humile, Dotted Myrtle - Gossia punctata, Plum Myrtle – Pilidiostigma glabrum and Scrub Cherry - Syzygium australe, however there are so many more! Common Aspen Acronychia oblongifolia, Muttonwood Myrsine variabilis, White Alder - Callicoma serratifolia, Blueberry Ash -Elaeocarpus reticulatus, velvet Leaf - Callicarpa pedunculata, Sweet Pittosporum – Pittosporum undulatum just for starters. if you want prickles too to keep things in or out, then you

just can’t go past Orange Boxthorn Pittosporum minutiflorum, but also try Native Holly Alchornea ilicifolia, Native Capers – Capparis spp. and Native Currant – Carissa ovata.

All the plants listed above are great for a single line hedge, but what if we double or treble the width of the hedge, that’s when we can really start to make some magic happen and create a wide enough strip of habitat for wildlife to not only move through but also to live in! Planting a line of Lomandra - Lomandra spp., Bamboo Grass - Austrostipa ramosissimum or Raspberries - Rubus spp. on the outside of your hedge helps seal your planting all the way to the ground and provide shade, wind and soil protection, habitat complexity and in the case of the Raspberry – tasty fruit.

Throw in a few of the smaller vines such as Richmond Birdwing vine – Pararistolochia praevenosa, Clematis – Clematis glycinoides, Smilax – Smilax australis, Jasmine – Jasminum singuliflorum and our hedge structure is becoming very diverse and has a range of additional resources for fauna such as the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly.

To return to my original pun, i bet you didn’t realize just how interesting and important hedges can and should be in our landscape. So don’t beat around the bush and invest in your local hedges now.

Wildlife Friendly Gardening

ECENT SHOWERS of rain have brought an explosion of growth and flowers to our gardens. The weeds are naturally thriving also but on the plus side, they can provide some food and cover. When food, water and shelter are available, birds and other garden inhabitants will come. There have certainly been many birds, bees and bandicoots.

Don’t forget rocks and logs as hiding places for small lizards. Decaying logs are a source of food for insects and other invertebrates that are in turn food for someone else.

Those fortunate enough not to have Noisy Miners have probably seen Lewin Honeyeaters, Brown Honeyeaters, Dusky Honeyeaters and even the lovely little Scarlet Honeyeater competing for nectar in the bottlebrush flowers. Plant for a sequence of flowering to keep the small birds in the garden for as long as possible.

and are also less attractive to the Noisy Miners. Banksias have also been flowering and are popular with the Little Friarbird. various honeyeaters are hunting spiders, a protein source, along house eaves and walls. Yellow Robins are constantly on the lookout for unwary worms and moths. An interesting observation has been the extent to which Scrub Wrens probe for insects along horizontal melaleuca branches, especially those branches close to the ground.

Strategically placed birdbaths attract all passers-by including Little Shrikethrushes, an occasional Regent Bowerbird, Rufous Fantail and Golden Whistler. Soft strips of bark on the melaleucas are collected throughout the breeding season to line nests. When lawn mowing is overdue, finches come in for grass seed. it’s a busy time.

A fertiliser with an analysis such as 725-7 which is high in phosphorus will therefore aid in abundant bud and flower production. Fertiliser could be also applied as a liquid foliar spray where the nutrients are absorbed by the leaves.

OST PEOPLE WOuLD be aware that one minute’s silence is asked of all Australians at 11am on November 11, to mark the moment when World War i hostilities ceased on the Western Front in 1918.

As the decades have passed, Remembrance Day, which was originally known as Armistice Day, has become a time to honour the fallen in all wars and conflicts. in Maleny, riders from the 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop will march their horses from Fig Street to the RSL as part of the commemoration service.

You may also have seen the troop parade on Beersheba Day (October 31). During the service, the “Last Post” is sounded by a bugler, followed by a minute’s silence and then “Reveille”.

Remembrance Day or ‘Red Poppy Day’ is overshadowed

by Anzac Day which, unlike November 11, is a public holiday.

Anzac Day memorial services, which initially honoured the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought and died at Gallipoli, draw big crowds all around the country while, for many, Remembrance Day is just another work day.

Maleny RSL president Chris Brooker said he expects Remembrance Day this year will be a low key event compared with 2014 when vietnam veterans from the Second Royal Australian Regiment attended the local ceremony.

Last year’s service was also memorable in that it was the anniversary of the commencement of WWi. Mr Brooker said that in addition to the 11am ceremony, a service will also be held at the Erowal Aged Care Facility.

The status of Remembrance Day rose nationally in 1993, when the remains of the unknown Australian Soldier were exhumed from a French military cemetery and entombed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. in 1997 the then Governor-General of Australia, Sir William Deane, formally proclaimed November 11 as a national day of remembrance.

Many countries now have a war memorial tomb for an unknown Soldier and there has been a corresponding resurgence of interest in Remembrance Day, particularly in New Zealand.

Similar ceremonies are held on Remembrance Day in all Commonwealth and many non-Commonwealth countries, although not all on November 11.

Traditionally, a red poppy is worn on the lapel from the end of October until November 11. Rosemary sprigs are also sometimes worn on the day.

The poppy tradition began because the flowers proliferate around war cemeteries in France. The RSL Maleny sub-branch will be selling Poppies before Remembrance Day.

A snapshot in time The Rotary Club of Maleny has been working diligently to collect a useful cross-section of items from across the community for inclusion in a time capsule, which will be buried for 25 years at the Maleny RSL flag station on Saturday, November 14.

Rotarian, Rick vickers said, “items will include a range of photos, news articles, a GoPro video by the chamber of commerce of our main “CBD”, and drawings by the little ones from primary school.”

A range of community groups are

involved, covering the arts, environment, industries, sports, service clubs and special interest groups across the generations.

“When the capsule is opened in 2040, the then residents of our town will be able to learn what issues were occupying the minds of a range of residents and groups in 2015, and what their hopes and fears were for the future,“ said Rick.

HEN JOSEF PRODiNGER and his wife Theresea moved to Flaxton more than 25 years ago, their 7-acre block was treeless and dominated by

lantana.

“We planted six thousand flowering native trees and then i started keeping bees,” explains Josef.

Before long, Josef start selling his honey and beeswax candles at the Montville Markets for local grower and makers. “it was a good move” smiles Josef.

“My honey is raw – so nothing is put in or taken out. it is fresh and full of enzymes and nutrients.”

Beekeeping was a natural step for Josef.

“Growing up in Austria, my father had bees and most of our neighbours had bees, it was just part of living on a farm” he explains. “i love the taste of raw honey – it is completely different

to commercial honey. When honey is processed for supermarket shelves, it loses most of its nutritional and antibacterial value and what you are left with is basically just sugar and water.”

“Over the past 50 years commercial manufacturers have exploited the European honey bee which is stressed and weak and the hive beetle is decimating hives with disease,” Josef says.

Josef believes that more hobby beekeepers are needed, if our local honey bee population is to keep thriving on the Sunshine Coast.

Pop Up artists Maleny Community Centre's Pop up Gallery feature artists for November are Ken Munsie and Lynn Cran.

Both artists are inspired by evidence of the past. Lynn uses paint and pastel, Ken gathers material that has had a previous life to craft his ‘rescued assemblages’.

Ken recently spent a “gap year” moving around the globe, and this art-trip has culminated in a new body of work that is being exhibited at the Noosa Regional Gallery until December 6.

By contrast, Lynn recently travelled to a small uNESCO listed town in the Carpathian Mountains in central Slovakia.

Here she spent two idyllic months painting the historical streets.

Andrew Farrell (The Wizard) - is a famous Australian pianist, singer and songwriter, widely acknowledged as a versatile virtuoso with unique technical and improvisation skills, including jazz, classical and boogie woogie.

Mary Cairncross receives 1 million Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is set for a revamp with $1 million in funding under the Tourism Demand Driver infrastructure Programme.

Minister for Tourism, Kate Jones, said these infrastructure projects would help to attract more visitors to Maleny and offer an even better traveller experience.

Work will include new buildings and an elevated ramp running alongside the rainforest. The café will also be refurbished with indoor and outdoor seating.

New nature refuges for Mt Mellum, Curramore and Cambroon

HREE NEW nature refuges have been gazetted in the Sunshine Coast Region recently and will protect 105 hectares of significant habitat and contribute to key wildlife corridors in this region.

Hinterland Bush Links representative, Susie Duncan, applauds the State Government for their nature refuge program which gives long-term security to the conservation of our native plants and animals on parcels of private and public land.

Said Susie, "Landholders are to be congratulated for their commitment to protecting and managing these sites for conservation."

At Mt Mellum, property owners, ianand Christine McMaster have partnered with the Queensland Government to restore and manage the environmental and conservation values of their 40 hectares. ian said, "We're quite excited. Our property is now protected as a nature refuge in perpetuity. it can't be developed, and is designated as a nature reserve."

Susie Duncan agrees, "Sunshine Coast Council’s Tuan Environmental Reserve Nature Refuge will support threatened species such as the Koala, Rufous Bettong, Glossy Black-Cockatoo and Blackbreasted Button-Quail, along with a diverse array of other native plants and animals including the Tuan."

The 27 hectares is 5km south-west of Kenilworth at Chinaman Creek Road, Cambroon.

Garanyali, 9km north-west of Maleny in Curramore, protects vulnerable koalas, tusked frogs and Richmond birdwing butterflies on 38 hectares between two sections of Maleny National Park on the Sunshine Coast.

With the declaration of eight other new reserves, nature refuges in Queensland now total more than 4 million hectares, more than the size of Switzerland.

Entrants sought for Lions Youth of the Year The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range is seeking young people, who are over 15 years of age and under the age of 19, as of the end of June 2016, to enter the Youth of the Year Program for 2015-16.

The Youth of the Year Program is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership skills in conjunction with other citizenship qualities which, apart from academic achievement, include personality, sportsmanship and public speaking.

Students living in the Maleny Blackall Range area and attending any high school or other secondary school or equivalent standard of school, or in any other educational establishment, including correspondence school, in the 2015-16 Lions’ year are encouraged to enter the Program.

Design Kenilworth's 'loo' Seasonal flooding, how to put a small country town on the cultural map, and where to hang the toilet roll are just a few of the challenges for artists, architects, designers and students from around the country competing in the Kenilworth Designer Dunny Competition.

With $10,000, the Kenilworth community in partnership with Council - is encouraging creatives from across Australia to design a public toilet structure that celebrates the Kenilworth community, and delivers an iconic and innovative public artwork.

Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said, “The site poses some interesting challenges, with entrants having to design a structure that sits at least four metres above the existing ground level to avoid the building being affected by seasonal flooding.

The competition closes on January 29, 2016, with a winner announced in March 2016. uR SKiN iS our outer layer, that final coat we show to the world that heralds our state of health, and can be a wonderfully unforgiving barometer of what our body needs.

Our largest organ is anything but superficial, more an enlightening reflection of our core self. i’ve always seen the tumultuous bubbling emotions of adolescence as being matched by the eruptions on the skin, hormones vying for position in the balance of sexual maturity.

A clean diet, toxins to a minimum, and flushing out those toxins we can’t avoid with plenty of water, is a great beginning to skin health. A diet rich in Omega 3s, healthy fats such as avocado, coconut and olive oil, plenty of fresh vegetables and seasonal fruit, provides nourishment for skin from the inside out. What’s interesting is how many of these foods can actually nourish from the outside in!

Banana might be a surprise inclusion, but it’s a wonderful exfoiliant and moisturiser. A nicely ripened banana can also brighten the complexion. Just mush up a very ripe banana (with black spots) and rub it on.

Rinse after 10 minutes.

Strawberries’ high vitamin C and antioxidant content mean they target free radicals on your face. They also promote collagen production so can reduce wrinkles. They can also help with teenage acne, as they contain salicylic acid, which clears up acne and dead cells.

Application can be as easy as biting the strawberry and rubbing it on your face and rinsing after 10 minutes.

Coconut oil is readily absorbed by the skin and contains lauric acid, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. in pacific regions where coconut oil is plentiful, it is traditionally used to protect from the sun.

Raw unfiltered honey is antibacterial to combat acne and other skin infections; it also aids healing of acne or other blemishes.

The lactic acid in honey clears away dead skin cells and moisturizes.

Here are my top five foods, probably languishing in your kitchen right now, just waiting to be transformed into a cost effective, convenient skin treatment.

Avocado is a ubiquitous ingredient in natural face-masks, but avocado needs no processing to deliver elasticity to the deepest layers of the epidermis, and contains iron, potassium, calcium, sodium, copper, magnesium, vitamins A, E, B and K. Mix it with warm water, apply and let nature take its course.

Ask yourself, do you: • suffer from physical fatigue, that ‘worn out’ feeling feel mentally tired, eg the inability to concentrate • • suffer from low blood sugar ie feeling jittery, agitated, moody • experience intestinal bloating and have ‘gas’ • feel sleepy after meals, especially after eating carbohydrates • have increased fat storage and weight • suffer from depression, lack of motivation or anxiety. if some or all of the above complaints apply to you, there is a very good chance that you are not tolerating the type and amount of carbohydrate you are eating and as a result, you are producing excess amounts of insulin. Transcending Mental Tendencies

F

ROM OBSESSivE perfectionism to debilitating lethargy; there are such a wide range of behaviours. This is evident in the Wendy Rosenfeldt different standards of housework; while some people can’t function without an immaculate house, becoming distressed if they think someone might drop in while their home isn’t worthy of being in a magazine, others can’t be motivated to clean at all. When you feel depressed it can be hard to get out of bed let alone sort out the clutter and clean the bathrooms.

While these extremes may seem poles apart, they derive from the same cause, stress and improper brain functioning. Stress inhibits the functioning of a healthy brain.

Risk factors for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder include child abuse and high levels of stress. People with OCD feel the need to check things repeatedly, have reoccurring thoughts or need to perform certain routines over and over. While not in the clinical range, other people may exhibit characteristics of this obsessive disorder. When going through upheaval in life, many people cling to maintaining order by obsessing about the tidiness of their home or holding on to rigid routines.

Depressive behaviour is characterised by complete lack of motivation to do anything that may improve life and wellbeing. This can often come about after a period of prolonged stress or burn out and can occur in individuals who tried to do everything right or keep up with the demands of work beyond their natural capabilities.

Transcendental Meditation helps with both extremes as it brings about healthy brain functioning in a spontaneous way. During stress, nerve impulses that normally go to the prefrontal cortex of the brain, bypass this area associated with moral reasoning and go to the emotional limbic system. in situations of ongoing stress, this more impulsive style of brain functioning can become the norm, leaving our

rational mind in the background.

Repetitive activities hardwire the interneuronal connections in the brain. While this can be useful if you want to learn a musical instrument it is not so welcome if it means you have to wash your hands 20 times a day or be convinced of catching a disease. The act of transcending allows us to go beyond all our thoughts, habits and compulsions and experience the most subtle level of the mind. it is the state of least activity and is characterised by bliss, peace and fulfilment.

Coming out of this state of transcendence the mind is more settled, more coherent, less anxious and able to see life from a broader perspective. Procrastination drops off and an ability to think and act in an organised way improves. The tendency to not be fazed by the environment also develops, your friends can drop in on your messy house and you can enjoy their company instead of fretting.

Outside of the twice daily practice of 20 minutes, people practising Transcendental Meditation enjoy a spontaneous ability to be mentally present and experience more positivity. There is no need to try to be mindful. This is a welcome relief to people struggling with trying to “be positive” as some mindfulness practices can cause individuals with a tendency for obsessive behaviour to become exhausted by constant self-monitoring, while people with a more depressive mindset can become distressed by their inability to control their negative thoughts.

RAvELiNG BACK FROM Noosa this weekend we passed a line of motorbike riders, hundreds of them all flashing some item in glorious pink. i’ve since found out it was to raise money for a young girl suffering from Lyme disease.

They were a glorious sight, streams and streams of them, and it reminded me that there are so many individuals in society who are good people, people who want to help in some way and are often only waiting for inspired direction or a cause that moves them emotionally. The internet has many stories of crowd funding and the power that people have when they come together to help a deserving stranger or to make the world a better place.

When i speak to someone with serious health issues, i often ask them, “Tell me what inspires you to get up each day? What motivates you? Why do you want to live?” Those that can’t answer or take too long to do so, realise even as

they hesitate, that that’s the first thing they need to work with to kickstart their journey to wellness.

Beyond the normal little pushes we give ourselves to carry on each day, it is vitally important that we discover some thing deeper and of greater value than just survival or duty to give ourselves the strength and vigor to turn on our self healing so that we thrive not just survive.

Ask yourself different questions, look at your reasons for the choices you make, take nothing for granted. Strive to daily learn and understand something new thats unrelated to your everyday experience. unplug from autopilot, even if it feels a little uncomfortable at first and give your whole self the highest form of nutrition physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Come fully alive, you deserve to feel amazing.
