AMMERS HAVE BEEN busy around our home these holidays. Whilst our eldest two are out “earning coin”, a tree house is under construction, but very much in use, and a marquee of a cubby has been installed, squeezing three single mattresses and four small bodies underneath.

It is likely that cubby will linger (much like our Christmas tree) as long as the cousins are with us.

They are all a year older since the last time together - but the creek, lake and beach are still so much more fun when they are shared.

If you are wanting to get active, there are loads of holiday activities for you in this edition.

The Wedding Showcase , Aussie Day Expo and Australia Day activities are all on the agenda for January. There are over 50 clubs and groups represented on Australia Day morning at Maleny Showgrounds: a feast of potential hobbies or sports, so do check it out.

AVE STEVE IRWIN Forest action group (SSIF) has released a statement announcing milestone success in their campaign to protect areas of The Steve Irwin Forest threatened by the development proposal to widen Steve Irwin Way. The forest contains koala habitat, lowland subtropical rainforest (a nationally recognised critically endangered ecosystem), as well as centuries old habitat trees and unique wetlands.

A SSIF spokesperson wrote, “Thanks to your support we have achieved a significant milestone in saving this forest from the bulldozers.�

Though the SSWIF website states that the battle is not yet over, they advised that the road works will now be kept to a line east of the Mooloolah cemetery, thus sparing endangered habitat and thousands of trees.

Members of the community have submitted alternative designs that keep the road completely out of the forest.

The group’s Facebook encourages continued support, saying, “your voice is being heard�.

I

T TAKES A special kind of relationship for a business to thrive long-term in a small community, particularly when that business is often in direct competition with the ever-expanding world of the internet.

To Matthew and Denise Howard, their Maleny Newsagency is so much more than just a business; it forms an integral part of their lives.

Often, as I walk past the shop, I see Matthew on the footpath with his characteristic wide grin laughing with people. “Customers are not just customers,” he explained, “they become friends. We really feel it when someone moves from the area—or dies”.

For Matthew, born and bred in Maleny, being so involved in his community comes naturally: his mum was also born in Maleny; he attended school in Maleny; worked on his father’s farm and he became a fireman.

“Mum and Dad owned BonnieView, a macadamia farm at Witta, and so I was always picking maccas as well as holding down a job.”

Denise, on the other hand, was introduced to Maleny when her parents, Ray and Rita O’Leary, purchased the Maleny Newsagency in 1978. “Mum became very ill in 1985 so I moved up here to help Dad. When Mum passed away, I decided to stay.”

As with many young people of the district, Matthew and Denise met at dances. They married and continued to assist their fathers in their businesses. “When Laura was a baby,” said Matthew, “she would sleep in a fold-up cot in the nut shed while I husked nuts. Eventually, Ray decided to sell the newsagency, so I said to Denise, ‘Let’s give it a go’.”

The young family, now also with son Blair, moved into the flat out the back of the newsagency at the end of 1995— although these days they live in their own home at Witta.

While we were sitting at the kitchen table out the back, enjoying a cuppa, Matthew suddenly jumped up, filled a glass of water and threw it out the window. I heard laughter from outside, and a grinning, wet rep walked in.

Matthew explained that what began as an accident has become something of a ritual. “There’s always fun going on here, life’s too short.”

What strikes me every time I walk into the shop is the happiness shown by the staff. “They are family, really”, said Denise. “We always have an open door for the staff to come in and discuss anything.” Jenny Horn has been part of this

‘family’ since 1979 and Monica Skerman for the past 27 years.

But running a successful business involves so much more than good management; it is a reflection of generosity and involvement in the community as a whole.

Matthew has been with the Maleny Show Society for 32 years. He was coach and president of the Maleny National Fitness club (he had been a member since the age of eight); then there’s the Rugby Union club, where son Blair has been playing since he was eight: “We’d fundraise, score, cheer …”

The Howards have always tried to support every club in the district, selling raffle tickets, taking bookings, publicising events. Matthew said, “We do what we can, when we can.”

Denise and Matthew are keen to listen to their customers’ needs and take advice. They hired a business coach for a year—“it was hard work but worth it”.

Then, a couple of years ago they took a gamble, and had a complete card refit of their shop as a concept store under the guidance of Hallmark Cards. They were the first to do so in Queensland, and one of only four stores in Australia.

Matthew explained: “You’ve got to keep up with this everchanging and growing community. We’re always coming up with new ideas such as buying a wide-format printer to handle large plans, posters and pretty much anything that can be printed”.

Eager to keep ahead of the game, each year the pair attends the annual ACP conference. “It’s a full-on day of learning and networking; we learn so much and have made friends over the years”, said Denise.

Their input into the community was formally recognised in 2001 when they were awarded Newsagent of the Year for Queensland.

They have also been named Paul Harris Fellows by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

“In appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world”. It is a rare thing for a husband and wife to share this honour.

I asked how they have been affected by the shift to online greeting cards, magazines and newspapers. “The only downward trends have been in the women’s magazines.

With everything else, we are bucking the trend”, said Matthew.

When I expressed surprise, he said: “People love to read up here. What other town in Australia has three good quality bookshops doing so well?” I had to agree; we do live in a pretty special place where people still read the newspaper with their morning coffee.

History

Aussie champion, Sarah Peters, has made history this year.

Between helping her mum at the pool and a bursting calendar of agricultural shows, travelling, preparing horses and cattle, each day with her little sister, Seanna is a cherished gift.

ARAH MADE HISTORY this year at the Ekka. She entered four state finals, and for the first time in history, won three, and came runner up in the fourth – dairy handling.

At age 18, Sarah has achieved these incredible results against competitors up to the age of 25.

Her Grandma, Joy, is understandably proud. “She’s made history. Even at the age of 25, it would have been impressive, but she’s just gone 18! ” Sarah won Young Judges awards at the age of nine, and has continued to sweep the titles over the years, culminating in her record breaking Ekka this year.

It all began with the horses. “I’ve been riding horses since I was four, or five, actually about three… like properly.”

In an interesting twist of fate, it was an early horsing accident that opened up the stage for the cattle handling.

“I couldn’t ride horses for 12 months – that obviously didn’t last,” she smiled.

Later that year, at the Maleny Show, Colin Thompson, who was to become her step-father, introduced her to her second passion.

“Colin was the AG assistant at the time, and he just handed me one of the bulls and said ‘give it a go’.

“This bull was four times bigger than I was - he was huge, but I didn’t care at the time.” Sarah won her first ribbon that day.

The Paint Horse Association captured Sarah’s passion for horses.

“When I was about eight, this thing came up for me. All these girls that were the age I am now were going to America to represent the Paint Horse Association.”

This is a program where youth members compete at agricultural shows, going through a selection process.

For each win, you accumulate points; then to the National Titles, at which point winning puts you in the running for the International Paint Horse Team.

The competitions include dressage, hacking and “Western Pleasure”, which Sarah explained succinctly.

“That’s where we’re all dressed up in blingy gear, shirts with diamantes, big cowboy hats, chaps with tassels on them.”

Sarah’s journey hasn’t been all bling and buckles, Joy was careful to explain. “She’s had to sacrifice a lot, with up to 14 shows a year; it’s interfered with school work.”

“You don’t have a social life,” but Sarah never lacked a sense of belonging or enjoyment. “It’s good clean fun, healthy fun.”

Within the Paint Horse Association ranking, Sarah is top youth in Queensland. In fact, she’s ranked top youth in Australia.

Sarah’s dream has become a reality, and next August, she is off to Germany to represent Australia, as the highest ranking member of the Paint Horse Team.

Straight after Germany she’s off to Tasmania to represent Queensland in the National Cattle Handling Titles.

“For Tasmania, we’re all going to go down there and try hire a bus and just travel around - take the three girls, and chill.”

Family time is important for all families, but for Sarah and family, “each day is a gift”.

Sarah’s seven-year-old sister, Seanna, has scoliosis and related bone disease.

The condition is affecting her kidneys, and creating a situation that is, very sadly, terminal.

They all stick together. It’s very hard for Sarah’s mum Christine, but Sarah says the distraction of competing with the animals helps them all.

“Better than sitting at home sadsacking it all the time.”

“It’s scary,” Sarah acknowledged, but Seanna also seems a source of inspiration.

“She’s making the most of it. She broke her own horse in last week, a little mini, so cute. Out of all of them, she’s probably the most daring one.”

Sarah’s three little sisters, Kael, eight, Seanna, seven, and Keelee just five, won $200 for the Maleny State School at Farm Fantastic. Finishing behind Maleny High School, the trio took second place.

“These tiny little kids, they did a tremendous job, they were so organized,” Joy chuckled. “They had two hours to prepare a cow - washing, grooming, setting it up for feed, watering, stabling” “Seanna’s a pretty handy little swimmer too, she can do everything that we can do. We don’t let it limit her.”

“She’s a little gorgeous, blue-eyed, blonde hair, tanned thing.” Sarah’s eyes welled up; so did mine, and the rest of my questions suddenly seemed less relevant than

hearing about Seanna.

“It’s alright. It’s just day by day, take it as it is,” said Sarah, and I guess the family take a leaf from Seanna’s book and make the most of it.

Enjoying every precious moment together, they are gearing up for a summer season at the pool. Not all expenses for the travel are covered, so the family will be doing a bit of fundraising for the big trip.

“We’re planning a “dive-in movie”, raffles, a money board, and maybe a night up at the Wine Barrel.”

RARE FIND! “1920s Female Architect” designed home in Western Avenue Kirsty Volz, a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland contacted Cate Patterson, Co-ordinator of the Montville Historical Group to ask for help solving a mystery.

Nell McCredie was one of a few practising women architects in Australia in the interwar period. Of her significant work, only one house remained in Queensland, now heritage listed. Kirsty had the blueprints of a house in Montville for L.J. Millett.

Was there any chance that the house might still be standing?

Val and Len Gorsch helped unravel the riddle

UT WHERE TO START? The search began with a drive around the streets of Montville looking at every 90 year old home that matched the design plans.

This was a fruitful exercise, in that it showed an abundance of older homes with their own undoubtedly interesting stories, but there was no obvious match between the plans and the houses.

The next step was to take the plans to Jenny Tatton at Montville Real Estate, a veritable fountain of knowledge of all Montville homes that have been bought and sold.

Jenny has meticulously kept records including family notes, aerial photos, copies of title certificates, plans and

advertising. Her heritage folder is a treasure trove.

After closely examining the blueprints, Jenny thought it was similar to a house in Western Avenue, but the layout was different with no fireplace. She recommended a visit to Val and Len Gorsch, long-time Montville residents who would recognize the house if anyone did.

It only took Val one glance at the blueprints to comment, "It looks like our place doesn’t it?” And she was right! Val went to a drawer and brought out a plan of the house she had made before she and Len made their own modifications.

She had documented so much of the house’s history in that hand drawn plan. She even had a photo of the house from 1956 when Len first moved in - staying with Jim Everett to learn about pineapple farming after his parents had purchased the farm.

As Val took us around her home there was ample evidence of the original design. From the outside, the neo-Georgian symmetry of windows framing the porch were now obvious - even though the original columns have been replaced by solid 4x4 posts.

Inside, the vestibule has been opened up to create a sizeable living room, replacing the original dining room. The walls still feature red cedar panels and the fibro cement panelling topped with a red cedar picture rail.

Although the function of the rooms has changed, the core of the house is clearly recognisable.

While the original home was built on a slope with the front at ground level, and the rear several ‘feet’ above ground, Len and Val’s house is on stumps – on level ground.

Val explained that the house had been moved from No 203 Western Avenue, probably in the 1940s.

It slid sideways off the stumps in a cyclone, and when Val and Len had it restumped, the ‘stumper’ commented that it was “one of the heaviest houses I’ve ever lifted,” - testimony to how well it was built.

Len mentioned that the name, Thompson, on one of the roof joists suggests that it may have been built by Fred Thompson.

Fred was a much respected local Montville building contractor, who built ‘Belvedere’, Monty and Ethel Smith’s home (1911), the Methodist Church (1912) and St Mary’s Church of England (1914) and upgraded ‘Elston’.

Enquiries at the Department for the Environment and Natural Resources revealed that Leonard John Millett and his wife Margaret Hunter Millett purchased a 1/3 acre block in March 1928, along with the larger block of just over 29 acres from which the smaller block was cut.

This land was purchased from John Clark and was part of the original 160 acres, portion owned by George John Butt.

So how did the Millett couple come to know a female architect and invite her to draw up plans for their home?

Nell was one of the earliest women who studied architecture at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1923 - and Margaret Hunter Millett graduated in 1922. It seems reasonable that they knew each other

as there would not have been many young women at Sydney University in the early 1920s.

Len and Val Gorsch always knew their 107 Western Avenue home, “Duoambo”, was pretty special, but they now know a little more of the history of their home.

Len and Val married in 1963 and raised their three children on their pineapple, and later, avocado farm. The most recent renovation to the home has been the transformation of the kitchen by their cabinet maker son, Wayde.

Now 86 years old, this comfortable and well-built home is sure to meet with approval from its architect, Nell McCredie who wanted to design practical, affordable homes for everyday Australians.

It is not often that a couple have both their mums and dads all working in the same business. With all their diverse skills, the family at The Falls Farm are building something special in Mapleton: a place of real food, education and entrepreneurial spirit amongst natural surroundings.

EN JOHNSTON and Jess Huddart wanted to “create a place that people are inspired by; in awe of their natural surroundings and with appreciation of what the earth provides.”

“Our vision for The Falls Farm is a place that combines food, design and education to achieve this goal”, said Jess, Design and Marketing graduate and USC Rising Star Alumni for 2014.

With their successful digital design firm, based in Brisbane and LA – the jet setting pair “spend more time in airports than the farm”.

The duo’s dads, Peter Huddart and David Johnston also work on the farm full time, so The Falls Farm is a real family affair.

Ben’s mother, Christine Ballinger is at the helm, and The Falls Farm currently supplies six restaurants on the Sunshine Coast and five in Brisbane.

The farm has not yet undergone certification, but is organically farmed.

“We are being very careful with our inputs and pest/disease control methods. The majority of produce is from heirloom seed varieties, and seed-saving is an important process in our growing cycle.”

During my visit, a picture of deftly managed mayhem emerged, with the chefs texting urgent late orders – ‘heirloom beetroot, leaves on for him, leaves off for him’.

Christine didn’t miss a beat, talking to me, or arranging to brief nephew, Mitchell, in his holiday weeding duties.

“He’s on university vacation, and he tells me being a party animal is expensive,” she relates warmly.

Cruising around the property in a buggy, I nudged Christine for her story.

Having studied traditional and contemporary papermaking, Christine’s artistic practice focuses on growing plants and using the cellulose she extracts from plants to make paper.

Christine has also worked with Australian Indigenous Women in Mt Isa, and at Toomelah Mission in Boggabilla helping establish paper-making enterprises, and exhibited her work internationally.

Christine’s artistic signature is apparent around the property. Her interesting ‘art gallery-like’ approach is to separate areas into ‘rooms’ - each with a certain aesthetic, function and set of characteristics.

The next step is to link the rooms together by corridors to enable safe movement for small birds, marsupials and other fauna, creating an integrated and healthy food-growing environment through increasing diversity.

Determined to grow food here, but have it coexist with the natural environment with a positive reciprocity, Barung Landcare, Greening Australia and botanists were consulted.

“The exact nature of the property has been somewhat organic and responsive to the characteristics of the land – the volcanic soil and north-easterly aspect only strengthened our resolve to grow good food,” Jess explained.

With 15-metre high lantana covering 80% of the property, the vision wasn’t immediately obvious.

Christine quoted permaculture expert Tim Lang, who was also consulted, “He said, ‘You let the landscape talk to you, and if it’s not talking, just leave it’.”

I guess it started talking. “I’ve lost count of how many trees, shrubs and riparian local species we’ve returned to this

They’ve already planted thousands of native species from tube stock, and have another 1000 ready to go in when the heat abates.

A strong desire to “return it to how it was”, plenty of hard work, and a lot of listening has resulted in official recognition as Land for Wildlife.

Befitting the reparation efforts, the property has the historical distinction of being the first land selection taken by white settlers in Mapleton.

William Smith took the selection in September 1889, and later decided it was too rocky - his father, David then took it up in 1892.

David Smith’s first house burnt down, but his second, Smith House, now a part of The Falls Farm, was built in 1910/11.

Jess’s mother, Val, has taken it on as a “pet project”, with a vision to provide luxury accommodation adjacent to The Falls Farm.

A renovated Queenslander, the house has a breathtaking view and a rather curious looking shed on stilts, originally built to house State Forestry vehicles.

“We think the tank and the shed are holding each other up”.

The plan is to make it structurally sound, but they all like the way it looks, so they won’t be making it ‘look new’.

Falls Farm plans include hosting farm open days, cooking classes, and paddock-to-plate dining experiences.

Longer term plans will see other education programs focused on design and a ‘systems approach’ to growing food

omething ‘on the side’ Nineteen year old Toukie Wood from Woombye has been selected to attend the National Music Camp Australian Youth Orchestra in Canberra this month.

The two weeks of intense practice and performance will be like a holiday for this busy musician who juggles uni, concerts, tutoring, hiring herself out at gigs and even propagating plants!

OUNG VIOLINIST from Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Toukie Wood is delighted to have been chosen to perform at the National Music Camp from January 3 to 17.

“I’ve been learning the violin for about 14 years now. I’ve done a few projects with Louise King as part of her Dreaming Big concert series."

The series has had 2800 people visit Eudlo Hall for events presented by celloist Louise King in the last two years.

Toukie has performed to packed houses in three of the concerts, as an emerging artist to date. She has also participated in Louise's EMERGE workshop series with guest artists of Dreaming BIG. "It was amazing," smiled Toukie.

Louise has also been invited to Canberra - she has tutored the young musicians for eight other Australian Youth Orchestra national programs so far.

The heart of AYO National Music Camp is the Orchestral Program, where students hone skills and knowledge of

orchestral music-making, in combination with other exceptional young musicians.

They perform in one of the two full symphony orchestras or the string chamber orchestra, and the culminating concerts are said to bring the house down.

“There was quite a lot of pressure. AYO has an international tour this year – so it was incredibly competitive as the same audition process is used for all the orchestras,” said Toukie.

Toukie knows the experience will greatly enhance her studies at the University of Queensland.

She is about to launch into her third year of a Bachelor of Music, studying violin and music performance.

“It’s great. I absolutely love uni.” She continued, “I’ve now reached that point where I have to choose a path to take.”

“It's an exciting time. I have to decide between performance or composition. I also love organising events on the side, and I find this ties in well with both of those paths.”

Toukie is planning further studies after she completes this four year course.

"I don't study event organising - I just "do". I help organise events to give myself the opportunity to perform and promote my new work."

"So you compose as well?" I said (impressed).

"As a holiday project, I am writing a string quartet and piano duet." she says, very matter of fact.

I had to ask how Toukie funds her studies.

"I have a job on the side at Lakewood Propagation Nursery. It is an outdoor wholesale nursery - I do a bit of everything."

She says she works more with plants than people, and has been there for the last four years, "Work is a holiday job and if I have a day free."

I said she must have an understanding boss.

She admitted, "It's a family business, run by my father. He started it from scratch 13 years ago."

"I also teach violin on the side, I'm based on the Sunny Coast and commute to Brisbane."

More impressed, I wondered what school fostered this work ethic and search for excellence, and asked what school Toukie attended.

It turns out parents Simon and Julianne home schooled Touki from Grade 1.

"My family have been a big support I probably would not have made it where I am without that," she said.

But back to the AYO camp, what was she most looking forward to?

"I think it will be best to perform with other aspiring musicians, playing with people who love playing as much as you do."

I questioned if they played instruments too.

“My parents aren’t musical. They both can play a few chords on a guitar, but that’s about it. They’ve given me a lot of encouragement along the way though.”

In fact they encouraged (and home schooled!) her three siblings too, as they all play piano and violin, including youngest brother, 10 year old Nahmi.

"I play flute, viola and a little bit of clarinet."

Her twenty year old brother, Mahnya, who is studying environmental science, also plays the saxophone.

Sister Kitouli, aged 16, adds the double bass, euphonium and even a piano accordion to the mix!

I asked if she composed for family jam sessions. "I do arrangements for us rather than compositions - like at a gig where someone has made a request." She reserves her own work to perform with friends at University.

"So where do you play?" by this stage I am still comprehending all of Toukie's activities.

"Oh, I perform at weddings, business openings, 21sts. It varies - concerts with orchestras as well."

"How do you fit it all in?" I ask.

"It's a very busy schedule. I love it."

And what about the hinterland community? "As a musician, the support you give each other all helps brings each The Woods are one very musical family: Kitouli, Nahmi, Toukie and Mahnya

W

HEN A GROUP of local coffee roasters got together and asked the question “what can we achieve by working together?” The answer was “there are no limits”.

A shared passion for education, collaboration and a vision to see the Sunshine Coast become the ultimate coffee destination, has brought together six of our finest coffee makers to form the Sunshine Coast’s Coffee Roasters Guild (SCCRG).

Founding members, Clandestino, Flying West, Montville Coffee, Tim Adams Specialty Coffee, Sunshine Coast Roastery and Pioneer Coffee Roastery, launched the guild at the 2015 Real Food Festival.

The next step became reality when they asked themselves "What if the Sunshine Coast had a coffee trail?"

Guild member, Karen Barnett from Montville Coffee, said, "Seeing how popular food trails are, got us thinking about how much fun it would be if, as coffee lovers, we went to a region with a trail for coffee!"

"People could experience an incredible diversity of coffee on the Sunshine Coast, and the coffee culture is so strong."

Karen believes the coffee culture has really thrived in the last five years . "More coffee roasters have established themselves, for instance Pioneer has been here as long as us, and Tim Adams is one of Australia's top baristas, and one of his team, Tilly Sproule, is the current Queensland Champion."

Karen explains it has reached a critical mass - the trail will feature 70 cafes, "These are the best around, they are all different and supplied by local roasters."

From north to south, these cafes are at the top of their game, as the roasters pride themselves not only on outstanding coffee, but exceptional training.

They want more cafes to join them, and to ensure more youths are trained as hospitality professionals.

But when asked when the coffee trail would be released, Karen said, "Because we are working with Visit Sunshine Coast, TAFE, the Sunshine Coast University and the Food and Agricultural Network, what we do has significant benefit - so we are not rushing it!"

They plan to deliver competitions, workshops, guild endorsed training as well as the trail.

Karen Barnett said this might be due to addictions, homelessness, poor literacy , mental health issues or caring for a parent. "In 2013, they asked us for a bag of coffee for the new café and since that time we have been providing coffee, mentoring and training. They now have another café at Cooroy Library."

"It is still at pilot project stage. Now the Roasters Guild want to scale the project and provide more support."

"It is what drives all of us - there are things we all believe in and we are committed to the region."

Look out for the Coffee Trail Map - it will be launched by the Guild and Visit Sunshine Coast this year.

Building on the success of the Sunshine Coast’s Food Trail, the Coffee Trail will show tourists and locals alike, where they can go to enjoy a high quality coffee made from locally roasted beans. A map, outlining the trail has been designed and will be promoted through the Visit Sunshine Coast website.

Karen approached TAFE QLD East Coast and invited the students enrolled in the Diploma of Business to work with the Guild as a client.

Karin Artis, lead vocational teacher, embraced the idea that has seen students involved with all aspects of developing the Coffee Trail Map, building data bases, producing invoices, mail merges and marketing materials.

This collaboration between business and the TAFE is giving students a real-life business scenario to engage with. The benefits to the students of working in a live commercial environment are enormous.

How are the students responding to this project?

“They love it!”, Karen Artis enthuses. “It’s a real, communitybased initiative that’s both topical and interesting.”

“This project has been invaluable for the students, as we have a real client to answer to, with real problems that need to be solved and some specific requirements to fulfil.

It is really satisfying for the students to know that what they are learning in class, directly matches a work outcome. The students will be able to see the results of their work in the community, for example, with the launch of the coffee trail,” she says.

There have been a few challenges along the way with students required to meet deadlines and key performance indicators, while producing a consistently high quality work for their client.

“Although they like the idea that this project is linked to the community, they have needed to keep in mind that we are working for a client’s specific needs and not just a case studybased assessment task,” Ms Artis says.

And the next step for the guild, is a focus on Coffee United.

"It is a café in Maroochydore set up by United Synergies who work with disadvantaged youth."

Build-a-Bug with BugsEd at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden combines insect classification and morphology with design fun.

Design your own insect from the provided craft materials and learn about your favourite insect’s body parts, where it lives and what it eats! Material cost $5 per child. January 12 10am – 11.30am (5 to 8 year olds).

Nature Chimes with Debra at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden is a chance for children to roll out clay and impress with interesting found objects (e.g. leaves, flowers, berries, etc.), and craft into a basic pinch pot in a bell shape with holes around the edge.

Making a small hole for hanging, your chime will then be fired for you at the Centre. Material cost $5 per child.

nd no doubt there is; but with very minor changes of the last part of the terminology, the same strictures apply to the business community – indeed, even to heydon’s own legal profession. in fact, it would be hard to find any group within the Australian populace free of the strictures heydon elaborates.

Certainly he has identified a few (45, to be precise) of the alleged miscreants who warrant further investigation and may or may not face charges as a result – although it must be noted that only 27 are actually unions or their officials; the rest were companies and a those associated with them and other entities. it sounds like a reasonable bag, until you remember that the whole process took some $80 million and two full years of intensive investigation unearthing and grilling some 500 suspects. Given that level of zealotry, it is hardly surprising that heydon gathered a few in his net. but of course heydon went further: unions were “riddled with widespread and deep-seated misconduct….it would be utterly naïve to think that what has been uncovered is anything other than the small tip of an enormous iceberg.”

And of course the learned judge knows a thing or two about naivety. he involved himself with a Liberal Party fundraiser, and then assumed that his own assertion of integrity would dispel any taint of bias. And of course he displays an arrogant affectation in declining to soil his hands on the internet, leaving his emails to a lackey. he has now gone for the headlines with a bravura display of invective and innuendo, but his suggestion that the entire trade union movement is irretrievably corrupt needs a little more that rhetoric to sustain it. even Malcolm turnbull admits that there are a lot of honest and worthy unionists. but that has not and will not prevent him from flying in, boots and all, to make the most of its politics. he will go to an election with it, he thunders. Which was, of course, the whole idea: Abbott’s plan was to demonise the union movement and, in the process, strike down Labor’s leaders, Julia Gillard and bill shorten, making the latter unelectable.

As it happens, shorten has already made himself pretty

much unelectable, but that turnbull is determined to sink the slipper: “Mr shorten has got to answer for this,” he threatened within minutes after releasing heydon’s report. but answer for what? heydon cleared shorten of all wrongdoing; there was a somewhat limp slap on the wrist, but nothing at all substantial. but of course, turnbull and more particularly the Murdoch press regard this as a test: will shorten roll over to the government’s demands for legislation, whatever they might turn out to be, or will be damned forever as a union puppet? shorten was conveniently (perhaps too conveniently) on a scheduled break, and his deputy tanya Plibersek has simply reiterated the old line that Labor has no tolerance for bad behaviour, from anyone. the unions, led by ACtu secretary dave oliver, have been more robust, but have yet to signal a clear political or industrial response. shorten emerged to tweet defiance: “bring it on!” Labor had, he elaborated, got rid of John howard’s WorkChoices, and would do the same thing for anything Malcolm turnbull might propose. but the analogy does not stand up. WorkChoices was a deliberate attack on the wages and conditions of the workers. turnbull has made it clear that under his legislation, the workers would be protected: his target is the bosses, the venal and self-interested union apparatchiks who exploit the workers for their own ends. shorten will need a better strategy than bluster. And his first task to decide when he needs to apply it. the government has signalled that its own first foray will be to revive the bill to reconstitute the Australian building and Construction Commission, which was abolished by Labor in 2012. it was given another run by the government of tony Abbott, but rejected by the senate. if it goes down again, it becomes a double dissolution trigger for an election in the first half of the year. turnbull already has two triggers, the abolition of the Clean energy Corporation and the establishment of the

registered organisations Commission, another anti-union measure: but neither is nearly as sexy as bringing back the AbCC, a policeman on the beat against the louts, thugs, bullies, thieves and perjurers.

Labor and the Greens will presumably continue to oppose it, and the more numerate crossbenchers, who realise that their best hope of survival is a double dissolution rather than a normal half senate election, may easily to do likewise. turnbull has said he regards it as an election issue, and the temptation to go fast and hard may be irresistible. so what, if anything, can shorten do about it? the only suggestion to date is an unlikely unity ticket from bob hawke and Jacqui Lambie for Labor to disaffiliate from the CMFeu. but for shorten to follow that advice would be an admission of surrender, and apart from that, it might easily release of a vengeful backlash from the political and financial giant. he has gone just as far as he sensibly can, proposing stronger measures for the governance of unions and, indeed, for all corporate institutions.

Many of the cross benchers would like turnbull to follow the same path – why limit the reforms to the building industry? but the Prime Minister seems determined to focus on the immediate target, which makes it a lot easier to wedge Labor. shorten, he insists, must declare total war on the unions – or at least on their leadership. nothing else will absolve him of guilt by association. shorten, of course, will not do it – it is against both his self-interest and his lifelong beliefs. unionism, like politics, is an honourable calling and the fact that it can besmirched at various times and places does not mean it should be rejected, let alone totally demolished. he is right, of course: just look at Jamie briggs and Mal brough, to name but two recent miscreants. but that is another story, and one Malcolm turnbull most emphatically does not want to talk abut.

The big push by utilities across Australia to hit solar households with higher network charges is underpinned by the claim that rooftop solar does little to reduce peak demand. There is increasing evidence that is not the case. Peak demand has been pushed in some states to the evening, after the sun comes down, but what is often not displayed is what the peak would have looked like without rooftop solar. Four of Queenslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest glass artists, tina Cooper, Wolfgang engel, Jonathon Westacott and sean oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;donoghue, have come together with their interpretation of jellyfish using glass as their medium, and showing their mutual admiration for one of the natural wonders of our world - Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Great barrier reef. tina has always been fascinated by the Great barrier reef - with its beauty and uniqueness in our fragile world. When she goes into the space below the surface, she finds that it is a world beyond our world. itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the largest living organism and can be so constructive and fragile like glass. soul awakening of the reef, consciousness triggering, reaching out to awareness, fragile, living, breathing organism, teetering on life or death. Just like the jellyfish - beautiful to behold but so dangerous to handle.

Jonathon was inspired on holidays exploring the wonderful Lady Musgrave island while snorkelling around its coral reefs.

Working with hot glass has enabled him to playfully explore the combinations of colour and shape, which he experienced while snorkelling on the coral quay.

After many years of trials and tribulations perfecting his technique on his glass jellyfish paperweights, sean has come up with his own unique jellyfish design. he quotes â&#x20AC;&#x153;i want to be different with my designs but not necessarily better .... just differentâ&#x20AC;?.

Wolfgang, on the other hand, was inspired while working with tina with her ramada resort commission in hervey bay, making some of the delicate coral reef components. he wondered if he could make tentacles using his torch to embellish tinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jellyfish creations. When you see the

Legendary guitarist, Kevin borich is still playing the edgy rock, funk and blues grooves he became famous for in the 1970s.

re-design of the Maleny Community Centre, and planned extensions to its technical capacity means a more sophisticated program from the Maleny Arts Council. the improvements have allowed a more professional program that will better satisfy the “sophisticated tastes of the hinterland audiences,” said program coordinator dr Peter Lavery. theatre consultant to the MAC, Christopher ross-smith, emphasised the importance of achieving “a good mix of theatre and music”, and continuing to offer excellent theatre at a competitive price, when compared with big-city ticket prices.

First up in March will be The John Coulton Brass Quintet, followed in early May by Motherland - a comparatively recent play direct from the Queensland theatre Company’s subscription series.

Motherland will be followed in August by the 18 member chamber orchestra Camerata of st John, An Evening with Groucho…in the afternoon, playing early october, and the always popular Melissa Western with a brand new show, The Roaring Twenties, late october.

A sunshine Coast Council spokesperson has announced that not-for-profit community group, the baptist union of Queensland (trading as Queensland Conference and Camping Centres), has been awarded a Community Lease of Flaxton hall located at 43 Kondalilla Falls road, Flaxton.

QCCC (Queensland Conference and Camping Centres) is one of Queensland’s leading providers of school camps, outdoor education, leadership retreats, church camps, expeditions and conference facilities. they have strong existing community networks and partnerships, and their proposed use and management of the facility represents an advantageous outcome to Council, and the surrounding community. not-for-profit community groups were invited to tender for the facility, after it had been empty for more than a year, and sunshine Coast Council were eager to see it activated and enjoyed as soon as possible.

QCCC have been awarded a three year lease commencing February 19, 2016.

the Lions Club of Maleny blackall range is seeking young people - who will be over 15 years of age and under the age of 19 years at the end of June 2016 - to enter the youth of the year Program for 2015-16. the youth of the year Program is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership skills, in conjunction with other citizenship qualities which, apart from academic achievement, includes personality, sportsmanship and public speaking. the program is open to students who live in the Maleny / blackall range area and attending any high school or other secondary school or equivalent, including distance education, in the 2015-16 year.

t’s tiMe to stArt a whole new cycle around the sun and a good time to take stock, ground yourself and consider changes in direction and also a good time to stop and smell the roses. Which is of course a subtle and subliminal message by myself to you, to start the new year by to stocking up on ground covers, reducing lawns and enjoying the beautiful sights and scents of our native wildflowers. here at Forest heart nursery in Maleny we have an ever growing range of local native groundcovers, grasses, vines, herbs and ferns, that not only look good in your garden but provide habitat for native fauna both little large and all those imbetween. take for example some of our native rainforest running grasses, the beard Grasses Oplismenus spp and Graceful Grass Ottochloa nodosa. they can form a dense grassy groundcover between 5 -30cm deep that are competitive enough to exclude weed seed germinating particularly under the shade of trees. they also provide good forage for wallabies or pademelon’s (if you’re lucky enough to have them in the neighbourhood) and are host plants to the wonderfully named Wonder brown butterfly. native violets Viola banksii (syn. hederacea) and Viola betonicifolia are not only beautiful in flower, in the case of

V. betonicifolia is the food source of the Laced Fritillary butterfly, these are rare and generally limited to coastal areas, but you could be lucky. emu Foot Cullen tenax is another versatile native ground cover with an edible seed, and food source for the Chequered swallowtail. native Plumbago Plumbago zeylanica is a stunning glossy foliaged groundcover which we’ll be making available in January with white to pale blue flowers and food source to the zebra blue butterfly. bower of beauty vine Pandorea jasminoides can be a stunning groundcover over large areas, with its masses of pink blooms through spring and summer. there are so many more plants to list and so little time but pop to get a good idea of the beauty of our local native groundcovers pop into Forest heart to check out our gardens, range of stock and advise.

A dense diverse bushy groundcover layer is crucial habitat for a whole host of ground dwelling fauna for both food and hiding from predators. bandicoots, Potoroos, Lizards and snakes all need dense cover to survive and thrive. “did he just say habitat for snakes is a good thing?” well having somewhere for snakes to hide away from you can’t be a bad thing can it? Ground yourself with groundcovers this summer, good for you and the planet.

t’s ALWAys hArd to believe it’s the start of another year, which will no doubt disappear as fast as the last one. however, it’s holiday time and an opportunity to explore our local rainforests, eucalypt forests, coastal parks, wetlands, and montane areas. the latter are the higher mountainous areas in the scenic rim and of course our Glass house Mountains. take “Mangroves to Mountains”, our local field guide to the plants of our region, with you as well as your water bottle, hat and other essentials.

2015 brought some seasonally unpredictable weather and 2016 will probably be the same. rainfall was patchy and in some areas sudden spells of hot weather burned off soft new growth. nevertheless, most young trees are now established and it’s time to start thinking about the next planting season. under “normal” conditions, whatever

they are, we can expect to get decent rain reasonably early in the year. What is wanted is a good level of moisture in the soil so that supplementary water is not needed following planting. during March temperatures should begin to reduce but the combination of

soil moisture and warmth will support enough growth to establish a healthy root system. this is essential to carry the young trees during the drier months to come. it’s a good idea to choose your preferred species now. your holiday walks will help you to identify those most suited to your particular area. Canopy trees, shrubs and groundcovers will all be there.

A visit to the Maroochy regional bushland botanic Garden at tanawha will help as many of the plants are named. take a picnic. tubestock plants may move into and out of the nursery quite fast so get them when they available rather than waiting until planting time. Availability also depends on what was producing seed in the previous season, so make your species list as broad as possible. take care if you are in a frost prone area.

ne oF the most frequently asked questions when faced with the dilemma of using either treated pine or treated hardwood to construct a timber retaining wall is how long will it last? the answer to this question isn’t at all universal and may vary considerably depending on the particular location and exposure the wall endures during its lifetime.

Generally speaking however both treated pine and treated hardwood that has been treated to a h4 standard or above (a rating which deems the timber suitable for external and in ground use) should last equally as long. this being said, the longevity of the retaining wall itself, exclusive of natural degradation within the timber depends entirely on the quality of construction, ie; timber sizing, hole depths, drainage, fixings, quantity of unsettled backfill

and post spacings etc. Key design factors as those above are essential to consider when planning a timber retaining wall and can each individually become the making or breaking point of your wall.

Keeping in mind that there are other factors to consider such as personal preference in aesthetics between the two timbers, cost and ease of use, and perhaps one of the most pivotal being the availability of quality sustainably grown timbers. unlike pine, hardwood is not a sustainable plantation grown timber which has made quality landscape grade hardwood increasingly harder to source. being more cost effective and easily available, pine might seem like the best option and may just well be but don't rule out a combination of both timbers where load on the wall is a key factor.

“A

n isoLAted MountAin with a dark rocky bluff, surrounded by eucalyptus forest in grey-green hues“ was Michelle Freeman’s description of the ancient looking Kenilworth bluff, in a sunshine Coast bushwalking Club newsletter. to me, the looming bluff has always seemed mystical, and though i’ve often wondered if it was a place of significance to the local indigenous people - my enquiries didn’t uncover a whisper.

As long time local don burgher told hinterland times, it’s as though nothing happened before white people arrived, and enquiries about pre-white settlement are met with “a brick wall”.

According to J.G. steele’s book “Aboriginal Pathways”, the area including Kenilworth bluff was thought to be originally home to the dalla or dallambara, a clan of the Jinibarra people and ubie ubie or obi obi was their "fighting chief". early european settlement included the tutt Family banana plantation high up on a ridge running up the Kenilworth bluff. stan tutt, local historian and author, and WW2 veteran, (who died in 2011 at 97) grew up on that plantation – i can’t

IN BRIEF: Council confirms trusteeship for green Park, Conondale sunshine Coast Council has confirmed its acceptance of trusteeship of the Conondale Memorial sports and recreation reserve.

Councillor Jenny McKay indicated that significant community engagement has revealed a strong connection to the reserve, as well as unresolved historical issues and associated concerns.

A master planning exercise will engage community and stakeholders to consider all competing interests.

While continued community access to Green Park will be a key consideration in the planning process, the reserve is a key facility for motocross, and under lease agreement with sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club until 2020.

Locals are encouraged to continue accessing the reserve in accordance with council’s local laws and event permit system.

over 5km north of Kenilworth, on the Kenilworth-brooloo rd. blink and you’ll miss it. it’s just a sign that reads “Kenilworth bluff Wilcox Family Park” and “experienced walkers only” and “no drinking water”. that’s where you enter, through the gate and between the two paddocks, there’s a track that leads past a few farm buildings”.

A few hundred “earthen and hardwood-retained steps” lead upwards - they call it “stairway to heaven”, and it was built under a Work For the dole scheme. you can reach the black ridges without entering private property, and there is a creek at around 440 metres that makes an excellent break point.

After the ridge, the climb becomes more vertical, involving “scrambling on small rocky outcrops and gripping sapling trunks to haul up on”, according to Michelle Freeman of sCWC. don burgher recalled that before the ‘Private Property’ signs appeared in the 80s at the summit, they could traverse the summit unhindered. he remembered a waterfall area another kilometre to the west of the plateau, on a southwesterly ridge, well worth the extra walking – but possibly now on private land.

back in the 80s, walkers would get permission from the Wilcox family to enter through their dairy on the Kenilworth side (now the Wilcox Family Park), and walk right across and come down brooloo bluff on the other side. there was a small Melaleuca swamp with a waterhole in the middle of the area at the top. According to don, who worked with national parks for years, it was a real rare gem as Melaleuca is not common at altitude. sadly, don believes, the Melaleuca waters (well-known for its medicinal properties) are no more – “i think the area was bulldozed”, though a bluff road resident we spoke with wasn’t so sure, and reported having found it once – “a huge swimming hole” he said.

My conclusion is that it’s day trip style adventure, plenty of bushwacking fun to be had, even if you don’t make it to the very top, and as the sign warns, the track is for experienced walkers.

For a fusion style outing – that is, a climb with a taste of fine wine at the end, why not time your climb with the opening hours of the Kenilworth bluff Winery – weekends and public holidays, 10am – 4pm. if the unkempt nature of this Kenilworth gem doesn’t deter you, you may just discover that mythical healing lake.

New Year’s Resolutions The festive season of december, charged with expectation and excitement, gives way to that hued light, morning after, feeling of the new Year.

tretChinG in Front of me, 2016 feels like a brave new world.

As a (southern hemisphere) mother of 4 children, new year always heralds new beginnings. this year, my daughter will begin high school and my youngest sons will embark on their first full year of school as year 1 students.

For me, resolutions rattle around my head, as i fantasize about all those delicious school hours i will fill with creativity and purpose. if life has taught me anything, (which is yet undecided), it’s that you never know quite know how things will pan out. humans love to make resolutions. it can feel wonderful to line up a row of earnest proclamations, ejected from your deepest longings and most unsettling insecurities. i think that’s why many of us keep our resolutions private – the real ones anyway. resolutions weren’t always such a private matter. the tradition dates back to the ancient babylonians more than 4,000 years ago.

For the babylonians - whose new year was in March, logically aligning with spring and the planting of their crops – the resolving was far less private, and far more calculated. resolutions were a promise to the Gods; to break one was to risk being out of favour, inviting misfortune and bad harvest.

the tradition continued after the romans introduced us to our January 1 new year, named after Janus, the two faced God of new beginnings. With one face looking back over the previous year, and one face looking forward, Janus was well placed to analyse the past, and envisage the coming year.

Chinese new year, which is late this year and will coincide with our February issue, also attracts declarations of improvement and resolve.

Arguably universal, resolutions are present in most religious practices and involve self improvement and renewed dedication to goodness and virtue. in all these histories, the pledges were made to a higher being, in return for protection from the Gods, with licence to bask in the light of good fortune. in the absence of a connection with Janus, i am going to make no resolutions this year – i’ve decided a daily resolution is far easier to manage. today, i will enjoy my family; move, and enjoy my body and its senses; and exercise my mind and heart. then, tomorrow, i shall press repeat.

APLETON PHYSIOTHERAPIST Rae Duffield-Jones has retired from physiotherapy practice, after almost 50 years of service to the industry.

Born in Kingaroy, and raised in South-Western Queensland, Rae obtained her qualifications in 1968, and worked in rehabilitation centres and teaching hospitals in Australia and Canada, before settling into private practice in Toowoomba in 1979.

After 10 years in the Darling Downs, a change of direction saw Rae moving north, where she opened a private practice in Woombye, which she operated for close to 20 years.

Rae says her career highlight during this period was making use of the excellent Queensland based research on the internal abdominal muscle system.

“This research changed my approach to patient management and assisted me in helping clients move towards effective treatment results and long term success” said Rae. After selling her Woombye practice in 2008, Rae joined husband and wife team Russell and Katherine McDonald at Range of Motion Physiotherapy in Mapleton. Six years later, the practice has grown to include 4 locations across the Hinterland and 7 staff members.

“What I have enjoyed most about living and working in the hinterland is how the country meets the city.

The natural environment is beautiful, yet facilities are close by” said Rae. “I have enjoyed my time at Range of Motion Physiotherapy and I will miss working closely with the team there” she continued. Practice owner Russell McDonald said that the staff and clients are sad to see Rae retire.

F you Are FAt, female and constantly tired, this article should interest you. in almost all cases i see in women whose bodies are programmed to store fat, there is one common denominator - elevated sex hormones - especially oestrogen. the bottom line is that excess body fat makes oestrogens, so the fatter you are, the more oestrogen you make. too much oestrogen is not healthy and most women have too much. this sets up a very vicious circle - you’re fat, you make too much oestrogen, excess oestrogen slows down the thyroid. An under active thyroid slows down your metabolism, resulting in fluid retention, more fat storage and fatigue. this is how a lot of women spend their lives; tired, fat and most of them fed up. Constant no energy is no fun is it? but this problem can be fixed. the solution essentially is to identify the major causes of the dysfunction.

First and foremost, you have to look at your diet. A typical Australian diet of too much refined carbohydrate and the wrong kinds of fats, programs your body to store fat. the typical Australian diet also results in a very sluggish liver.

And guess what, you’re in catch 22, because a sluggish liver is incapable of conjugating oestrogen in preparation for elimination via the bowel.

When this doesn’t happen, you’re back on the excess oestrogen broken record. Also, and there’s more, the typical Australian (Western) diet leads to a toxic bowel (irritable bowel, colitis, diverticulitis, bowel cancer, all start with a toxic bowel) dominated by unfriendly bacteria.

Any oestrogen that has been conjugated in the liver is promptly deconjugated by these bugs. this ‘freed up’ oestrogen is then free to be absorbed and pass through the body again. this excess oestrogen overstimulates breast tissue, the uterus, ovaries and skin - the result, breast lumps, fibroids, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis and unhealthy changes in the cervical tissue. even if you’re not fat, this can and will happen to you. the good news is this is not only fixable but preventable.

Fix your diet, fix your liver, fix your gut, burn some fat and slowly but surely and you’ll find your energy starting to return. it can take 12 months but this type of approach does work.

We do not rest when we are tired but push through the fatigue with another coffee or the drive to achieve. Work deadlines and the needs of our family can mean we just have to keep going but this also develops into a habit. once in the cycle of busyness it can be hard to stop or even slow down.

Lack of rest creates restlessness and the habit of nervous energy. While we might feel we get a lot done by rushing around, long term it can lead to burn out or health problems. our bodies spontaneously rejuvenate when we give them the chance to rest. that is why we feel better after a goodnights sleep. the relaxation gained from the holiday break can often give us the enthusiasm to live a better life and in this mood we create new year’s resolutions. how long we can keep up

our plan to eat healthy food, exercise regularly or be more organised depends on how good we feel.

When we are stressed and fatigued it can take twice as long to gets things done and we are more likely to make mistakes. When we are tired we are more inclined to reach for the quick fix, fast energy snack food then taking to time to prepare a healthy meal. stopping to close the eyes during meditation can actually help you to get things done and increases the enjoyment of life. during transcendental Meditation a state of rest can be achieved that is twice that of deep sleep. Meditators report that they feel mentally clearer, procrastinate less, have more energy and experience greater emotional stability. it is like having the enthusiasm and rest that is gained from a holiday with you all year. in this state it is much easier to implement any positive changes to your life and let go of negative habits. take time out over the holidays for just relaxing instead of feeling that you have to fill your social calendar or catch up on odd jobs around the house.

s you Move into this new year, ask yourself “how many of the resolutions and promises to myself or to a loved one, that i made last year have i actually kept?” it might be helpful to clarify some points in your mind to so as to optimize your potential for making 2016 the best year for you so far.

Get a pencil and paper and give yourself a little time to consider the following questions. Ask yourself, “What are my 2 greatest strengths?

Consider your responses and then ask yourself, “Am i applying those strengths in ways that maximize the possible benefits they could bring into my life and that of my loved ones?”

Ask yourself, “What am i really looking forward to or what goals am i setting myself?” then ask your partner what they want to manifest as their future and see if you’re both working towards and hoping for a similar outcome? how have your attitudes and your habits towards your body and your mind changed for the better this year? do you find yourself moving between judgements and disconnection in respect to world events, or are you beginning

to educate yourself beyond what the media feeds you as facts? understanding that world peace begins with you and your relationships, are you focusing on peace, harmony and cooperation where possible? someone once said, “you are not punished for your anger you are punished by your anger" remember that your subconscious is a goal striving mechanism and it loves getting clear directions from you for how to help you build a better life. Watch your self talk yo may forget the content but your subconscious will keep following your directions.

We are all guests here on this beautiful earth, be a gracious grateful guest, do something positive right where you are to heal and support nature. never take your loved ones for granted, treat them with the same enthusiasm, good manners and support you would do if your were just beginning a new relationship with them.
