Wakefield College industry partner, ENGIE, hosted a project week with our Level 2 and Level 3 Business students where they had to develop ideas for a marketing campaign for the The Hut Community Centre in Airedale, Castleford. They were tasked with designing a new logo for the community centre and to raise the profile of its services and facilities.
Steph is On Cue! Business Students Turn Marketing Gurus
Helen Law, Work Placement Officer at Wakefield College, said “I am really pleased with how well our students have worked on The Hut project with ENGIE. It has been a brilliant opportunity where they have been given a valuable insight into what it is like to work within a marketing role. They have worked collaboratively, respected each other’s ideas and come up with some great, creative marketing concepts.”

A former Wakefield College Business student is making a name for herself in the world of women’s snooker after recently breaking into the top 10 in the world. Wakefield’s Steph Daughtery, a consistent presence on the World Women’s Snooker Tour since 2014, has made significant strides in the sport, earning recognition as one of the tour’s most improved players in recent years.
Daughtery’s journey began with a series of triumphs in the UK Women’s Under-21 Championship, where she claimed victory three times in 2015, 2016, and again in 2021. Her progress has been marked by consistent gains in experience and skill, leading to her first Challenge Cup title in 2018 at the Eden Women’s Masters. In a remarkable display of talent, she beat world number nine Diana Schuler in the final.
It was the 2019 Belgian Women’s Open that really marked a turning point in her career. Daughtery showcased her prowess by securing both the Challenge Cup and the Under-21 titles, with a noteworthy win over Thailand’s Nutcharut Wongharuthai in the Under-21 final.
Her ascent in the sport reached a new high when she broke into the top 10 of the World Women’s Snooker (WWS) world rankings, following an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the 2021 UK Championship. In November 2022, Daughtery attained her highest career ranking to date, placing 7th globally. This remarkable achievement underscores her status as a formidable player on the World Women’s Snooker Tour.

This exciting course has the potential to lead me towards many other industries, and I am particularly enjoying the finance module, which I plan to pursue at university.

The T Level course has the advantage of partnering with Wakefield District Housing (WDH), allowing work placement opportunities across various departments.
This year, I will be working with the Customer Services team, and I am confident that I will apply the skills I acquire on the course and during my placement in the future.

We work closely with airlines, our last assignment was guidance on how to get a job, how to prepare for an interview, and helping make us ready for a career as a cabin crew member.

The College has given me so many opportunities, some of which have been once in a lifetime. I was lucky enough to work abroad in Italy, where I gained new skills and valuable work experience which will help me with my future career.

College Students Embark on Fijian Eco-Adventure of a Lifetime
A group of twenty ambitious students from Wakefield College’s Animal Care and Travel & Tourism departments embarked on an adventure of a lifetime to Fiji, organised by Think Pacific.
Flying off to the tropical South Pacific Island, they began their thrilling 3-week stint surrounded by Fiji’s stunning natural beauty.
Tailored to their course specialities, the trip was packed with activities focusing on eco-tourism, animal and wildlife care, and sustainability efforts. The students delved into the vibrant Fijian ecosystems, exploring everything from Rainforest Park and Sand Dunes National Park to coral reefs and lush bush trails.

Come Fly With Me!
Our Travel & Tourism students get hands-on air cabin crew training thanks to the work we do with FlyMe. Our Travel & Tourism students had the opportunity to experience cabin safety drills, first aid training, fire training, evacuation slides, life raft drills and much more.

The wildlife experience was a real highlight, with opportunities to observe local birds, reptiles, and marine creatures in their natural habitats. They also learned about the vital role of organisations like Animals Fiji in providing care and veterinary services to these animals.
Henry Manwaring, Deputy Head of Curriculum and the driving force behind the trip, emphasised its significance in showcasing the intertwining roles of eco-tourism, animal care, and sustainability in Fiji. It was an eye-opener on how tourism affects the island’s people, wildlife and environment.

The students immersed themselves in Fijian life, visiting traditional villages and eco-retreats to understand the customs and culture. Activities such as volleyball, snorkelling and kayaking provided opportunities to bond with locals and fellow travellers.
Representing the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, they proudly carried the Group’s flag, marking their journey from the UK to this exotic destination 9,945 miles away. A truly remarkable experience, the trip wasn’t just a learning opportunity, but a chance to broaden horizons, make lasting friendships, and explore a part of the world they might have only dreamed of. Perfect for any school leaver contemplating their next big step!
