YOUR JOURNEY YOUR CHOICE
Education isn’t one-size-fits-all - and neither is learning. Some students thrive with hands-on projects. Others prefer diving deep into texts and ideas. Some want real-world experience out in the field, whilst others feel at home in a structured classroom. There’s no right way - just the way that works for you.
If you are still unsure of what course is right for you, please contact our Course Information Team on 01924 789111 or at courseinfo@heartofyorkshire.ac.uk

ENROL FOR YOUR CHOSEN COURSE
GET SET FOR LIFE WITH ENGLISH AND MATHS
No matter what course you choose, where you work or what career you build - strong English and Maths skills open doors. At Selby College, we make sure every student has the confidence and support to master these essential subjects.
Whether you’re aiming for university, an apprenticeship or to go straight into a job, employers and higher education providers expect a solid level of English Language and Maths. That’s why achieving at least a Grade 4 (equivalent to a C) in both subjects at GCSE is a national benchmark - and a key part of your study programme if you haven’t already hit that mark.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT:
EMPLOYABILITY
Most jobs - from business and IT to healthcare, trades and retail - require everyday use of English and Maths. You might be writing emails, reading instructions, managing budgets or using formulas on the job.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Colleges and universities often require GCSE English Language and Maths as entry criteria for degrees, Higher National Certificates/Diplomas or other qualifications.
CONFIDENCE IN EVERYDAY LIFE
From calculating bills to understanding contracts or expressing yourself clearly, these skills make life easier.
WHAT WE OFFER
If you didn’t achieve Grade 4 in English and/or Maths at school, don’t worry - you’ll automatically continue working towards it here and we will support you every step of the way.
YOU’RE NOT DOING IT ALONE
We know re-sitting a subject can feel daunting. That’s why our tutors take a fresh, practical approach, ensuring that lessons are interactive and supportive.
Please note, you don’t have to study GCSE English Language and Maths if you have achieved a Grade 4 or higher prior to starting your college course.
ISABELLA

“My Maths tutor really helped me understand the questions I struggled with and worked on them with me until I understood them. My English teacher also pushed me and believed I could do even better than I thought and she was right!”

MEET MARK
As one of three chefs at Fish & Forest in York, Mark played a pivotal role in delivering the restaurant’s high-quality menu and service as part of his apprenticeship, overseeing the restaurant’s starters and desserts.
This is also where Mark discovered his love for patisserie, desserts and breads, with him now exploring this further in a new full-time role at the Heppni Bakeri in York.
“I’m able to put the skills, knowledge and advice I gained through my Apprenticeship into practice every day in the bakery – which has been particularly useful when it comes to using my knife skills, ordering and managing stock and health and safety. I was initially quite nervous to start an Apprenticeship at 26, but it’s given me confidence in my abilities and that I can do whatever I set my mind to. I now get to do what I love every day, creating pastries that make people happy.”
