Choose Your Route to Success Everyone learns differently - so follow your heart and choose the path that’s right for you. This section will help you explore your options, understand the different course levels and see how each pathway can support your future goals.

A Levels (Sixth Form) If you have a genuine interest in your subjects, enjoy studying, can work independently and perform well in exams, an A Level programme could be the right choice for you. Our A Levels focus on facilitating subjects, helping the majority of our students progress to Russell Group universities and other leading institutions. You will typically study three A Level subjects. Please check individual course descriptions for full entry requirements.

Technical Apprenticeships Vocational Courses Like the idea of earning whilst you learn? An

Apprenticeship could be the perfect next step.

Do you prefer hands-on learning and being assessed through coursework rather than exams? Technical Vocational courses let you develop real skills, knowledge and experience linked directly to your chosen industry. You’ll study one qualification at a time, choosing from a wide range of subjects at Levels 1 to 3. With access to industrystandard facilities and real working environments, you’ll build the confidence and experience employers are looking for. Whether you’re aiming for a role in areas like engineering, healthcare, business or the creative industries, a Technical Vocational programme can help you get there.

T Levels Want to gain real experience whilst you study? A T Level can help you build the knowledge and practical skills employers value. This two-year qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and includes a substantial industry placement of at least 315 hours, giving you valuable insight into working life. Developed with employers, T Levels prepare you for skilled employment, a higher apprenticeship or university.

Apprenticeships combine paid employment with training, helping you develop the skills and experience employers are looking for. You’ll work with a real employer whilst studying towards a recognised qualification, with opportunities available from Level 2 through to Level 6 (degree-level). After completing your Apprenticeship, you can progress into employment, continue to a higher-level apprenticeship or move on to university.

Foundation Learning If you want to build your confidence and develop essential skills for the future, Foundation Learning could be the right place to start. Foundation Learning combines vocational tasters with English and Maths, helping you develop the knowledge, confidence and independence you need for further study or employment. You’ll focus on building personal, social and workplace skills in a supportive environment, giving you a strong foundation to progress onto higher-level courses or into work.

Apprenticeships - Level 2

Candidates should hold GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, in Maths and English at Grade 2-3 (English Language or English Literature accepted). Exact requirements will vary depending on the subject..

Apprenticeships - Level 3

Candidates should hold GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, in Maths and English at Grade 4 or above (English Language or English Literature accepted). Exact requirements will vary depending on the subject.

New Qualifications New Level 1–3 qualifications will be introduced nationally and available for enrolment as they roll out in phases between September 2027 and 2030.

Level 3: V Levels V Levels are two-year qualifications, similar to A Levels. They offer a more practical route to study and will be available to be taken alongside A Levels within a mix-and-match model.

Occupational Certificates will be a two-year study programme, designed for students wishing to enter employment. The extra year of study at this level will prepare students with the occupational skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to secure successful employment. Occupational Certificates will be achieved through:

Level 2: Two Pathways Two new pathways are being introduced for Level 2 study: Foundation Certificates will be offered to students wishing to progress to Level 3 study, which will be a one-year study programme. They will focus upon gaining English and Maths qualifications, in addition to a subject-specific study to enable students to further study at Level 3. Foundation Certificates will be likely assessed through a range of: + Coursework/ assignments + Practical or applied tasks + Some knowledge testing (e.g., exams or controlled assessments)

Level 1: English and Maths Stepping-stone qualifications are being considered for learners with GCSE grades U–2, providing an additional year of English and Maths to support progression to a successful GCSE resit once a Grade 3 is achieved.

Get Set for Life with Why It’s Important: English and Maths

Employability Most jobs - from business and IT to healthcare, trades and retail - require everyday use of English Language and Maths. You might be writing emails, reading instructions, managing budgets or using formulas on the job.

No matter what course you choose, where you work or what career you build - strong English and Maths skills open doors. At Selby College, we make sure every student has the confidence and support to master these essential subjects.

Whether you’re aiming for university, an apprenticeship or to go straight into a job, employers and higher education providers expect a solid level of English Language and Maths. That’s why achieving at least a Grade 4 (equivalent to a C) in both subjects at GCSE is a national benchmark - and a key part of your study programme if you haven’t already hit that mark.

Higher Education Colleges and universities often require GCSE English Language and Maths as entry criteria for degrees, Higher National Certificates/Diplomas or other qualifications. Confidence in Everyday Life From calculating bills to understanding contracts or expressing yourself clearly, these skills make life easier. What We Offer If you didn’t achieve Grade 4 in English Language and/or Maths at school, don’t worry - you’ll automatically continue working towards it here and we will support you every step of the way. You’re Not Doing It Alone We know re-sitting a subject can feel daunting. That’s why our tutors take a fresh, practical approach, ensuring that lessons are interactive and supportive. Please note, you won’t need to study GCSE English Language and Maths if you have achieved a Grade 4 or higher prior to starting your college course.

Getting to College Made Easy Travelling to Selby College is straightforward, with dedicated bus services and Arriva routes covering a wide area. Yearly passes are available for convenience and savings. Student enrichment goes beyond the classroom, offering opportunities for learners to develop new skills, discover passions and gain valuable experiences ensuring you thrive both academically and personally. Staff and students raised money for charity at the annual Colour Fun Run.

Students from across the Group competed in a variety of sports as part the Heart of Yorkshire Varsity Event.

Sport students visited North Yorkshire Waterpark for an activity-packed residential trip.

A Level Law, Criminology and Psychology students visited Amsterdam to learn about the different legal system, explore the renowned Body World Museum and go sightseeing.

Business students put their teamwork skills to the test at escape room, Mindlock.

Art students worked on a real client brief – the TransPennine Express Selby Station! They created colourful murals to brighten up the exterior of the station and encourage the use of public transport.

Students took to the slopes in Italy as part of the College’s annual ski trip.

Public Services students became detectives for a day on a Forensic Science trip with Think Forensic.

Engineering students visited the new and interactive National Grid learning centre at Wren Hall Converter Station where they learnt about the EGL2 project and how clean energy powers homes.

Volunteering There are a lot of opportunities for students to get involved with community action at college. Previously, students have participated in Unloc’s Sustainability Student Leadership Academy where they learnt about carbon literacy and led their own sustainability projects in college and the local community.

Student Central Student Central is your one-stop hub for support throughout your time at college. You can access a range of services here including the Students Union, Financial Support, Work Placements, the Careers Team and Student Wellbeing.

Student Leaders & Student Voice Make the most of your college life by becoming a Student Leader and enjoy enrichment activities, clubs, social trips and special interest groups. As a Student Leader, you’ll also support the Students’ Union, creating opportunities for you and your peers to connect, explore and grow. Brand-new 3G Pitch The College has a new all-weather 3G sports pitch thanks to a £900K grant from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation. The pitch hosts football games, rugby training and general fitness training so that students can get stuck into sports all year round.

Beyond the Classroom Our Sixth Form students get ample opportunities to enjoy college life outside of the classroom. Students have explored options for their futures through university visits, career fairs and guest speakers as well as having fun on trips and days out.

Abroad in Amsterdam

Thinking about the future…

Social Sciences students have a trip to Amsterdam where they explore the city, visit the Body Worlds Museum and examine the differences between the legal system in the Netherlands and the UK.

Our Sixth Form hosts Careers Weeks and UCAS Days where guest speakers talk to our students about their industries, host workshops and advise them on applying to universities and jobs.

At the Courts A Level Law students visit Leeds Crown Court each year to attend public viewing of cases, see how the courts operate day-to-day and learn about careers in Law.

We study a wide range of areas on the course, such as housing and refurbishment, finance and human resources. I even had the opportunity manage an event and do some visual merchandising. Level 3 Year 2 Business students took part in a practical leadership and teamwork assessment yesterday at Mindlock Escape Rooms. The activity challenged students to solve problems, communicate effectively and work collaboratively under pressure as they raced against the clock to complete the immersive escape room tasks.

Trip to Carlton Towers Level 3 Business students recently visited the stunning Carlton Towers for an informative and engaging behind-the-scenes tour. The visit provided valuable insight into how a professional events venue operates, supporting students with their event management unit. During the tour, learners explored how events are planned, organised and delivered at a largescale venue, giving them a real-world perspective on the skills and coordination required in the industry.

Digital Sustainability Projects

+ A £1.2 Trillion Sector: The UK tech ecosystem is officially valued at £1.2 trillion, making it the largest in Europe (more than double France and Germany combined).

Level 3 IT Software Development & Cybersecurity student Jacob claimed the top prize at the Yorkshire regional WorldSkills endorsed Sustainability Action Innovation Challenge, impressing judges with his innovative and impactful CO² calculator concept.

+ The AI Revolution: Approximately 25% of all UK businesses are now actively using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology + The 2 Million Milestone: The UK tech workforce has hit 2.15 million people, and it continues to grow every year.

The challenge tasked students with ‘designing something that will solve a sustainability issue whilst addressing one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’. Jacob’s winning idea was the ‘CO2 Impact Projection Calculator’ - using a data calculator to show how small pledges of sustainable actions can compound to have a measurable impact and contribute to a more sustainable society. Jacob, said: “I used data analysis skills learnt in my course at college for this project, which is my favourite part of the programme. I’m really interested in sustainability as it’s the biggest issue that the world is facing today and one that is growing. My project focused on how we can help people understand the impact of their sustainable pledges and to help everyone hold each other to account, making a real difference.”

Enrichment & Trips: Hair & Beauty students travelled across the world for an enriching trip to Tokyo. Students trained in a range of disciplines including hair care, hair colouring, hair counselling and Japanese-style makeup techniques.

46% of the hair and beauty workforce workforce are aged 16-34, with the number of 16-24 year olds rising by 12% over the last year.

Selby College has its very own hospital simulation teaching ward where students can immerse themselves in a realistic environment to practice their healthcare skills. The mannequins in our Healthcare Simulation Ward allow students to take blood samples, remove catheter tubes from the bladder, treat wounds, insert feeding tubes and take blood pressure.

Hospital Tours Students visited York Hospital to tour the facilities and speak to professionals to see what it’s like to work in an NHS facility.

Forensic Investigators Whilst studying a Public Services and Policing course, you will be able to put your learning into practice. Students went on a trip to Think Forensic Crime Scene Centre for an engaging crime scene investigation workshop where they could examine different types of forensic evidence and took part in a crime scene processing task. Meet Holly During my course, I have had so many great experiences; a personal highlight was Cabin Crew training. We were given training sessions, shown how to remain calm in an emergency, and we even served food and refreshments from the catering trolley! Travel & Tourism Students Go Behind-the-Scenes at Jet2! Students were given a behind-the-scenes look at how Jet2 operates, from customer service and airline operations to holiday planning and destination management. It was a brilliant opportunity to see first-hand what it takes to run a successful airline and tour operator.

Tourist Activities Sometimes, the best way to learn about the Tourism industry is through experiencing it. Students visited York to immerse themselves in the tourist hot-spot, experiencing the City Sightseeing Bus and York’s Chocolate Story visitor attraction. The world’s longest commercial flight is from Singapore to New York, covering 9,537 miles and taking around 18 hours and 40 minutes - long enough to watch 9 full-length movies!

I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted a hands-on learning experience that would also give me a qualification and allow me to earn straight away. Information For Parents

Giving Your Child The Best Start We hope this prospectus provides useful and reassuring information to help your child or ward transition smoothly into college life. Below is more information about the range of support we offer.

Safeguarding We provide a safe, respectful environment. Staff are trained to identify and respond to any safeguarding concerns swiftly and effectively.

Student ID All students receive a college ID card at enrolment and must wear it visibly on campus. This helps us maintain a safe and secure environment. Please remind your child/ward to bring it daily.

Financial Support Students aged 16–18 may qualify for a bursary which covers costs for travel, meals, equipment and trips. Please contact our Finance Team on 01924 789283 or at financialsupport@ heartofyorkshire.ac.uk for more information.
