Finally, indulge in some fun facts and figures about the worlds of sport and the public services. These enlightening snippets offer a fresh perspective on the diverse and exciting paths you can explore in these dynamic fields.

Academic and Sporting Achievements at Annual Awards

Our Sport & Public Services students are invited to the College’s Annual Sport & Public Services Awards which celebrate the successes of our sports teams and individual students from across the academic year. The evening includes a three-course meal before the presentation of the Awards for the College’s sports teams including Football, Netball, Rugby and more.

Links with Public Services

The department has strong links with local Emergency Services and the Armed Forces, with students attending Armistice Day events with the Army and visiting Carrgate West Yorkshire Police Training Centre, Strensall Army Barracks and Welton Waters Adventure Centre with the Royal Marines.

The Army Advantage Programme also recently visited the College to talk to students about the different roles available within the Army. Over 15 military personnel from five different regiments of the Army, including Royal Logistics, Medics, Signals and Infantry regiments, provided stands where students could explore the equipment they use in their roles.

Guest Speakers

We regularly invite guest speakers to deliver talks to our students, including Emma Johnson from Humberside Police who recently spoke to students about her role and shared insights about how the Police promote equality and diversity, as well as how she handles key situations within our diverse society.

Olympic Origins:

The modern Olympic Games, revived in 1896, were based on the ancient Greek Olympic Games, which date back to 776 BC and included running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing and equestrian events.

The Ironman Triathlon:

One of the most gruelling endurance events in sports, the Ironman Triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride, and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.20 km) run, raced in that order without a break. It’s a supreme test of physical and mental endurance.

Firefighting Fitness:

Firefighters need to be in peak physical condition. They often carry equipment weighing up to 45 kg (100 lbs), including their gear, hoses and other tools. Requiring rigorous physical fitness tests for high levels of strength and endurance.

Sports Psychology:

Focusing on how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors, the field of sports psychology has become a vital part of training for many athletes.

I really enjoy the lessons delivered by my tutors and working alongside my fellow course mates. What I’m learning in the classroom is teaching me how to effectively work with younger children which I’m able to apply when doing work experience. The department also has close links with the NCS, so we’ve been able to take part in a range of activities and trips.

Throughout my courses we were lucky enough to go on many trips. We enjoyed a residential to the Yorkshire dales climbing Pen-y-ghent which taught us a lot about ourselves and each other as a group. We learnt the independence of cooking our own meals and taking responsibility to keep the place tidy. We worked as a team to get up the mountain as some found it tougher than others. We were all there to push each other throughout the duration of the residential, it was a truly memorable experience for all of us.

Once I’ve completed my qualifications, I want to join the Police force as a Police Constable – my studies have taught me the leadership skills and teamwork skills which will be very important for joining the police force.

I’ve really enjoyed the practical assignments which have tested my teambuilding skills and fitness. Taking part in the bleep tests is helping me to prepare in my application for the Army when I leave College. I want to go into the Army to learn new skills and to represent my own country, which is something I would be very proud of. I like being able to make a difference to people’s lives, which is why I’m currently a Student Governor and President of the Students Union.

Student Enrichment

It’s not all work and no play in the Sport & Public Services department! Our students recently took on Ninja Warrior and conquered their fear of heights at the Climbing Depot as part of their adventurous activities unit.

Our students have also enjoyed a number of trips throughout their studies, with our Sport students taking part in residentials and visits to the England Institute of Sport, Scalm Park Footgolf, Pen-y-ghent, CrossFit in Leeds and the Sport European Football Tour, where they visited PSV Eindhoven FC for coached sessions.

Public Services students have also embarked on a number of walking routes including Rosedale Abbey, the Hole of Horcum and Pen-y-ghent, using only a compass and map for navigation.

Students have the opportunity to become Sport Activators to help develop football and other sports at the College and in the community, as part of the Association of Colleges’ and the English College’s Football Association’s Activator programme. Our students most recently organised a glow in the dark netball session, which was lots of fun!
