Selby College Foundation Learning Newsletter Autumn 2024
Department Newsletter
Welcome
Greetings from the Foundation Learning Department at Selby College!
I am thrilled to welcome you to read our departmental newsletter. I hope you enjoy reading about the amazing things that happen within our Foundation Learning Department.
Our main focus is to provide our students with the core skills and confidence which will prepare them for their next steps in life. That’s why we arrange for our students to take part in a rich variety of activities and experiences alongside their learning to ensure they can successfully progress onto their next steps.
We also believe in the power of real stories to inspire and guide. That’s why you will be able to read about some of our student success stories in this newsletter, including some of our current and former students.

Welcoming Spaces
We’re lucky to have an onsite communal garden which, as a Foundation Learning student, you will spend a lot of time in.
As part of a National Citizen Service community project through Club Doncaster Foundation, our
Foundation Learning students worked together to refurbish the gardens. The students helped to paint the garden’s shed, remove weeds and plant flowers, whilst gaining important skills such as team building, communication and leadership.
Trips and Activities
Students have the opportunity to take part in a number of exciting trips and visits as part of their course. Our students have enjoyed trips to Bridlington, Flamingo Land, Yorkshire
Wildlife Park and more, as well as taking part in a Graffiti and spray paint workshop delivered by Graffiti Stars, one of the UK’s biggest Graffiti companies!
Hear from our Students
Jack
The Foundation Learning Department helped me with my self-confidence and enabled me to get where I wanted to be, which was studying Childcare. I always enjoyed taking part in the different team challenges and the tutors were always supportive and encouraging.
I really liked that there was a mixture of abilities in my class and enjoyed helping my fellow course mates learn, as well as learning myself. The tutors were always fun and gave me the confidence to try new things, whilst still having clear rules and boundaries. I would recommend the course to anyone who is unsure of what they want to study after finishing school, as it allowed me to progress onto a Level 2 Engineering programme at the College.

Christmas & Coronation Celebrations
Our Foundation Learning students know how to celebrate! They enjoyed an end-of-year ceremony with a party buffet to celebrate their achievements throughout the year.
The students arranged and prepared party food to celebrate the King’s Coronation last year and also prepared their own hearty Christmas lunch for themselves before the break for the holidays.
Our Foundation Learning students have use of the department’s onsite domestic kitchen, helping you to build your cooking skills!
Charity Fundraisers
As a department, we are always looking for ways to help those less fortunate than us. Our students have organised fundraisers and donations for a number of charities in the past, including Macmillan Cancer Research, Comic Relief, Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Selby & District Food Bank to name a few.
Jerry Greens Dog Rescue provides a safe place for homeless dogs and to find new loving places for them to live, with the students collecting items such as toys and tennis balls, tinned dog food, treats and more to create ‘doggy shoe boxes’ for the rescue dogs.
Helping others has given our students a real sense of achievement and they’ve done it all whilst having fun!
Little Princess’ Trust
Pathways student Christina Noble also donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, which provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.
Christina loved her new haircut and was even more pleased that she was able to help others.
