‘‘

I began this course because I have recently retired and would like a new career path running my own dog grooming business. It’s a great set-up at the College and a really supportive environment, the tutors are patient and knowledgeable. Being a student again made me anxious, but everyone has been really friendly and helpful. If I hadn’t started this course, I wouldn’t have made the friendships that I have now and would be bored at home.

3.

Top-class facilities with modern, fully equipped campuses that rival any in the region.

4. Learn your way –attend in person or choose from a range of online course options.

5.

Easy to reach, with excellent public transport links to all our Colleges.

I’m doing the HTQ in Construction Management alongside working full-time at Keepmoat, spending one day a week at College which is great. At first, I was nervous and wondered if I was too old to go back into education. But as a mature student and a mum, the HTQ course fits my life perfectly and gives me a good work/life balance. I feel incredibly proud to be a woman in construction. There are so many opportunities for women from minority backgrounds. After completing my HTQ, I want to progress to the Level 5 and become a Project Manager.

Advanced Learner Loans

If you are aged 19+ and studying for a Level 3 or higher-level course, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the costs of your course.

Do I qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan?

• Aged 19 or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age limit).

• Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this unless you meet one of the exceptions detailed at www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan/eligibility

How much can I get?

The amount of loan you can apply for depends on your chosen course, the fees charged by the College and maximum amounts set by the government.

• The minimum loan amount you can apply for is £300.

• You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover the College fee or you can pay all or part of the fee yourself. Please note, there may be instances where the College fee is higher than the maximum loan amount available.

Can I get additional support to help with childcare and travel?

The Advanced Learner Loan only covers the fee you’re being charged for your course. However, the College may be able to provide financial support towards travel and childcare costs, but this is based on household income. Please contact Financial Support on 01924 789283 for more information.

• To qualify for this write off you must have fully completed both courses.

• You do not need to take out a loan for the Higher Education course. However, it must be eligible for funding by Student Finance England.

• The HE course does not have to relate to the Access to Higher Education course you complete.

The HTQ has been a great fit for my learning style, offering practical, hands-on experience. I would highly recommend it to others because it’s a technical course that provides a comprehensive understanding of project work. It has been instrumental in my career growth, aligning closely with the skills employers are looking for, which helps me stand out in a competitive field.

‘‘Even though I feel quite comfortable doing DIY projects, I still felt nervous approaching the purpose-built Construction workshop at Selby College. I think doing any form of training when you are a little bit older brings more apprehension than if you were a school leaver fresh out of education. However, as soon as I arrived it was easily diminished by a friendly tutor and other students who were of varied ages and had different intentions for doing the course. Everyone worked at their own speed, supported by the tutor who answered any questions we had along the way.

For some, the sheer mention of DIY sends shivers down their spine. For others, DIY jobs are an enjoyable experience to build or fix something yourself.

Our Construction Department offers FREE* DIY Skills courses throughout the year in Bricklaying, Plumbing, Joinery and Carpentry at Castleford College and Selby College.
