PERFORMING ARTS ART, DESIGN & PHOTOGRAPHY
Art & Design students and tutors venture to Venice
Our Art & Design students and tutors ventured to Venice, Italy, to see the sights of the city and visit some world-renowned art exhibitions – a trip for both enrichment and inspirations for their own studies!
Known mostly for being home to beautiful canals and gondolas, built on over 100 small islands in a lagoon on the northeast of Italy, is Venice.
Venice has an incredibly rich art history; Venetian art was one of the most inspired art movements of the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries, home to some of the most influential artists in history such as Giovanni Bellini and Titian.
The Art & Design students visited the infamous artistic and cultural landmarks such as Doge’s
Students were tasked with finding inspiration for their own art projects – perhaps applying the Baroque and Rococo styles to their own art works.
The trip also included typical tourist activities including trying out the delicious cuisine, exploring the incredible Venetian gardens and seeing the amazing views from the heights of the city.
The students and tutors expressed that they had a wonderful time in sunny Italy and have taken inspiration home with them to feed into their further studies!
Palace where they saw the Picture Gallery of Palazzo Ducale as well as St Mark’s Basilica.

Evie
I like the creative freedom the course gives me and how that has allowed me to grow and develop as an artist.
I chose this course because I love photography, and with it I am able to use a range of media to expand my capabilities. It’s so relaxed, it’s easy to be diverse here.

Chalitha
I chose the course as I enjoy photo and video editing.. The course is enhancing my skills in these areas and I’ve gained lots of experience during my time at College. I want to share my creative skills with the film industry and want to become an Editor or a Director.
Maddison
Since starting the Level 3 Creative Media course, my photography skills have improved as I now understand the different rules when taking photographs. The video editing module also helped a lot when making our own short films.

Creative Media Production & Technology Students’ Documentary Exhibition at Selby Abbey
Selby College’s Creative Media Production & Technology students brought Selby’s history to life with a documentary exhibition at Selby Abbey, as part of a project with Selby High Street Heritage Action Zone, a project funded by Historic England and North Yorkshire Council.
The Level 3 students created a range of documentary films which showcased heritage sites across Selby, including The Crescent, Micklegate, Back Micklegate, Finkle Street and New Street.
The documentaries, which were on display at Selby Abbey last November, featured interviews with local historians and footage of the historic streets.
“Creating a documentary for a community project isn’t something that you’d get to do at high school and so this experience has expanded our experience in film making. From arranging an interview with a local historian, to filming cut-away footage of Micklegate, to editing the footage, we really enjoyed the
Young Student of the Year
Kizzy Wade studied a Level 3 Media course at Selby College and was named the Association of Colleges’ Young Student at the Year. Kizzy is a keen poet and spoken word activist and was nominated for her commitment to raising awareness on issues such as disability, mental health and challenges people face in society, through her writing. She found her love for poetry by accident after joining a poetry session on Zoom during the first national lockdown. Since then, she has never looked back and has already made great strides in the industry.
Kizzy said, “I’m delighted to be named the Association of Colleges’ Young Student of the Year and to have my work recognised on a national scale and by a leading awards scheme. Poetry is more than a hobby to me, it is a way for me to express my opinion and thoughts through an art form to advocate for and help others. I want to be able to use my writing as a vehicle for social change to reduce stigma around important topics such as disability and mental health, ensuring that those who don’t necessarily have a voice, are heard.”

process of making the documentary and it feels rewarding to see it being shown at Selby Abbey.”
Students Harry Senior, Josh Leaper and William Wood, who created a documentary film about the history of Micklegate, said of their experience of working on the project.
