Team Football Watch It Grow
Last year, students visited the York City Football Stadium where they considered sustainable techniques and engaged in a team building activity.
Supported by Keepmoat Homes, our Level 2 Plumbers from Selby College started their Watch it Grow initiative. Their visit to the Rathmell site was their introduction to a live construction site during which they gained not only an insight into plumbing installations but the overall construction of residential properties.
Remembrance Day
Students and staff, as well as Bright Start Day Nursery (based at Selby College), Royal Naval Association, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Yorkshire North & West Army Cadet Force, St John Ambulance and the Men’s Institute at Thorpe Willoughby, paid their
respects as part of a remembrance ceremony at the College.
Our Construction department did a fantastic job arranging the service and creating a sombre display to mark the occasion.
Hear from our Students
Jay
After doing bricklaying with my uncle, I instantly knew that I wanted to pursue it as a career. I love how practical this course is, as that’s how I learn best.
Thomas
My dream is to buy houses, do them up and rent them out, and the skills I’m learning on this course will be a big help with that. It’s also helping in my forklift job outside College.
Construction Student Awards
Students from our department end the academic year on a high with a student awards ceremony. Winners of the Construction & Civil Engineering awards are presented with prizes donated by generous award sponsors. Scan the QR Code to see who won what.

Manager discusses our Partnership with Aico and its Benefits for our Students
For over a decade, the robust alliance between Aico (Ei Electronics) and Selby College has not only endured but thrived, leaving an indelible mark on the education and professional development of construction students. With a commitment to excellence, Aico has actively supported Selby College in training over 470 construction students, facilitating the attainment of the Aico Professional Installers Qualification.
The foundation of this enduring relationship was fortified under the stewardship of Tony Teal, who assumed the role of Selby College’s direct point of contact. His leadership has played a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the collaboration, ensuring that students receive top-notch training aligned with industry standards.
Last year marked a significant milestone as 16 Selby College students embarked on a journey to Aico’s office in Oswestry. This immersive experience provided invaluable insights into the operational intricacies of the company. Witnessing firsthand how Aico operates offered students a tangible connection to the
theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom, bridging the gap between academia and realworld application.
Aico’s commitment to community-based awards has not only bolstered the local economy but has also underscored the company’s dedication to being a responsible corporate citizen. This visit shed light on how Aico’s initiatives positively impact the community and residents, emphasizing the role businesses can play in fostering a symbiotic relationship with their surroundings.
Beyond the confines of the classroom, the partnership has become a catalyst for the holistic development of Selby College students. By actively participating in Aico’s initiatives and programmes, students have not only honed their technical skills but have also cultivated essential soft skills crucial for success in the construction industry. The symbiotic exchange between academia and industry has become a cornerstone for nurturing a workforce that is not only proficient but also well-rounded and industry ready.
As students continue to navigate their educational journey, the Aico and Selby College partnership stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration between educational institutions and industry leaders. It is a model that not only equips students with the skills needed for a successful career but also instils in them a sense of responsibility and awareness of the broader impact their work can have on the community.
In a rapidly evolving world, where the nexus between education and industry is crucial, Aico and Selby College exemplify the enduring potential of partnerships that transcend the traditional boundaries of academia. The 11-year journey is not just a timeline but a narrative of growth, mutual learning, and a shared commitment to shaping the future of the construction industry through education and collaboration.
