Department Newsletter

Autumn I 2024

Welcome

Greetings from Selby College’s Childcare Early Years & Childhood Studies and Health, Social Care & Wellbeing.

My name is Carla Cantrell and I am thrilled to welcome you to read our departmental newsletter, an exciting new publication designed to keep you informed and engaged with the latest developments in our amazing department.

In this newsletter, you can find out what our current and former students have been up to over the past year –from career activities to college trips, enrichment and student stories.

As the head of the department, I am continually proud of our students, their hard work and commitment to both their studies and work placements. The department is full of friendly faces who all have something in common – a passion for caring for others.

We take pride in our facilities and industry links, such as our amazing nursery and healthcare classrooms as well as our partnerships with employers including local schools, early years settings and healthcare providers. These all help to ensure that when our students leave the College, they are fully equipped with the knowledge and hands-on experience that they need to begin their careers.

I hope you enjoy reading through the newsletter and finding out about all the exciting things we have been up to lately.

Health

Following funding from the Department for Education, Selby College boasts a brand-new hospital simulation teaching ward.

It models a two-bed hospital ward and a community care environment, where students can practice on and treat realistic mannequins using industry-standard equipment.

Using the three mannequins, students can test their clinical skills by taking blood samples, removing catheter tubes from the bladder, treating wounds and inserting feeding tubes.

Carla Cantrell said: “We wanted our students to learn and experience what working on a real-life hospital ward is like. The mannequins replicate people of all ages, skin colours and bodyweights, meaning students can gain insight into dealing with the needs of a range of different patients. This cuttingedge technology means that our T Level

Education & Early Years

The College also has a replica nursery classroom setting for the Education & Early Years students, which includes a soft play, dress up and reading area.

Students train on RealCare baby infant simulators, teaching them basic care such as feeding, changing and dressing infants.

This is benefitting students’ learning whilst they are out on their industry placements, which are with a range of nurseries and schools across the district, including Barlby Bridge Community Primary School, Brayton Headstart Preschool,

students can seamlessly transition from the classroom to working out in the industry on their placements.”

T Level Health students are able to put their newfound skills to practice in their industry placements at Osbourne House in Selby, Thorpe Willoughby Pharmacy, Snaith Hall Care Home and Stone Pharmacy in Goole.

Pollington Preschool, Rainbow Preschool, Staynor Hall Community Primary Academy and Selby Community Primary School.

Paige Lazenby, T Level Education & Early Years student said: “I prefer practical learning and studying a T Level means that I can apply what I’m learning in the classroom to real-life scenarios. It has taught me how to deal with different behaviours and his given me experience in working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEND) which I hope to find a career in.”

Hear from our Students

Childcare & Early Years

Paige

I originally chose to study A Levels but realised that I enjoy being able to get handson and learn through experience, so the T Level in Childcare was the perfect option for me. My tutors in College and the mentors on my industry placement are always very supportive and keen to give you new opportunities. I’ve enjoyed learning about the stages of development in children which I’m able to see first-hand in my Industry Placement at a Primary School. I hope to specialise in Special Educational Needs (SEND) and do my teacher training in the future.

Health & Social Care

Kyron

I want to be a paramedic so I thought the T Level in Health would set me up for this. The course has taught me a lot about the science involved in healthcare, as well as legislation which was my favourite module. I’m currently doing my industry placement in a care home and hope to go to university to study Sociology once I’ve completed my course.

Work in the Local Community

Our students enjoy engaging with the local community regularly, including working with nurseries and care homes. This year, our Childcare students have worked collaboratively with serveral local nurseries to plan events and activities for the children.

Our Level 3 Childcare students invited the nursery children over to the College to help in some fundraising for the charity, Barnados. They participated in a a sponsored ‘toddle’ around campus before hosting a picnic on the College field.

The students ensured that they supported the children in carrying out this toddle by making fun engaging strategies to support them walking, such as walking like different animals. When preparing a picnic for the event, our students considered how they cut the food in order to be safe for children to eat, ensuring they were practicing their health and safety skills. To close the day, the students sat with the children in a circle and sang some nursery rhyme tunes.

Paediatric First Aid Course

Our Level 3 Childcare students underwent essential training in their second year, which saw them complete their Paediatric First Aid and Food Hygiene qualifications that are key to further develop their skills once they are licensed to practice.

Once qualified, this will make students stand out to employers as it shows that they already have some of the necessary practical skills to work in childcare or social work.

‘A messy child is a happy child’ is the ethos we instil into our learners and we have had plenty of opportunities to share these activities and experiences with children from a local nursery. Our learners planned activities in line with their study programmes and coinciding with the nursery frameworks. They hosted workshops around the NSPCC Number Day and World Book Day to support the children in their learning and development. See below for some snapshots of these exciting sessions with the nursery!
