Greetings from Selby College’s Engineering Department!
I am thrilled to welcome you to read our departmental newsletter, an exciting new publication designed to keep you informed and engaged with the latest happenings, developments and opportunities in our amazing department.
As the head of the department, I am continually inspired by the passion and innovation that our students and staff bring to the world of engineering. This newsletter is our way of sharing that inspiration with you.
In this edition, you can expect to find a wealth of information. We will bring you the latest news from our department, keeping you up to date with current trends and departmental achievements. It is an excellent way for you to stay connected and informed about the field.
We also believe in the power of real stories to inspire and guide. That is why we will be featuring student case studies, showcasing the journeys, challenges and successes of our students. These stories not only highlight the real-world application of our courses but also serve as a testament to the supportive and innovative environment that Selby College offers.
Additionally, we understand the importance of experiencing the environment where students will learn and grow. Therefore, our newsletter includes extra-curricular activities that happen in and around college.

What do Employers and Students Say About Us?
We have a longstanding relationship with Drax Group and were delighted to be a part of its video series in celebration of Drax Power Station’s 50th anniversary.
Through our partnership, we have educated thousands of learners in our local community and most recently developed groundbreaking courses in carbon capture and storage. With Drax’s support, we’re helping develop green skills and the workforce of the future.

Extra-Curricular Emergency Services Training
In October, staff and students from across the college learned how to restart a heart as part of Restart a Heart Day in Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust enabled our students and staff to become CPR Confident.
Students also got to learn first-hand the dangers of road incidents with a live demo from North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service earlier in the month!
Freshers Fair
When you join us in September, you will be able to take part in a fun-packed Freshers Fair. This year’s students got to enjoy a freebie pizza, candy floss and our friends over at Tim Hortons even donated over 300 donuts for our students!
The Latest Technology
Selby College, along with West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, Council Adult Education Services and other Colleges and Universities, have been working in partnership to implement the Local Skills Improvement Plan for York and North Yorkshire.
As part of the project, Selby College has invested heavily in its Engineering Department to create a de-carbonisation laboratory which meets the skills needs of the both the engineering and low-carbon sectors.
The laboratory is fitted out with state-of-the-art GUNT training rigs which simulate Carbon Capture and heat recovery solutions.
Virtual Reality headsets and software have been purchased so that the College can create immersive content to further aid in practical teaching in health and social care and to take students to environments which would be difficult to see in the real world.
Selby College turns 40
This year we are celebrating 40 years of Selby College. Since it opened its doors in 1984, the College has provided highquality education to learners of all ages and walks of life across our community.
