Reset seeks to provide young people who are disengaged because of SEMH issues with a 2 day a week programme delivered in a post 16 setting, providing a line of sight to FE and employment.
It combines classroom lessons, health & wellbeing input and practical vocational sessions and aims to re-engage young people with education ahead of their return to school after the 10 week programme.
Students will participate in a minimum of 5 vocational tasters:
Castleford:
Motor Vehicle/ Body Repair; Care & Early Years; Hair & Beauty; Fabrication & Welding; Construction including Carpentry and Joinery and Brickwork.
Wakefield:
Animal Care; Music; Art; Horticulture; Sports / Public Services
Classroom sessions will include:
Overcoming barriers to learning
Mindfulness and Growth Mindsets
Pride, Positivity & Passion
Fundamental British Values
Accountability and Motivation
Financial Responsibility
Confidence Building and Self-esteem
Health and Safety Awareness
Crime and Consequences
“The students love the taster sessions and get so much from them, not only the subject knowledge and experience but the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the soft skills and concentration they are unable to show in their academic subjects at school. Over the 10 week programme the students progress and develop in the taster sessions, particularly in terms of self-confidence, maturity and independent working.
The groups benefit from visits from external organisations such as Spectrum Health, HMP Not-4-Me, St. John’s Ambulance, West Yorkshire Police, the St Giles Trust and West Yorkshire Fire Service.
They also take part in external visits to Angler’s Country Park, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Hut in Airedale and more. The Ranger’s Day experience develops team work skills as well as problem-solving in an unfamiliar environment. The visit to YSP allowed the students to appreciate different art forms and develop critical thinking and looking at different perspectives. We use the Hall in the Hut to do some of the physical team building activities.”
Catherine Allan RESET tutor
Charlie originally joined our RESET Step Out programme in Y10 and took part in a range of Personal and Social Development modules alongside vocational tasters and activities led by external organisations such as West Yorkshire Police and the Army. Charlie returned to school after the 10 week programme and applied to be an Early College Transfer student at Castleford College.
Charlie has gone from strength to strength on the ECT programme and was awarded School Partnerships Student of the Year, achieving distinctions in the models he has built.
Sandra Lockett, Schools Partnerships Lead commented:
“My experience of working with the young people on the RESET programme has been inspiring, being able to support them to recognise and celebrate their ambition and qualities. The program has been an opportunity to work closely to develop self-esteem, confidence, and commitment and to establish strategies to overcome barriers to learning.”
Amran Nazir RESET Tutor
“The best part of my job is seeing young people being successful at College and developing skills that will help them progress to the next level and ultimately employment.” Charlie’s tutor has praised the quality of his brickwork and said that he has constructed some of the hardest models there are to build. This has been achieved by taking his time and staying focused.
Our partnership working with Airedale Academy has created a positive learning opportunity and we are all very proud of Charlie and hope he continues to make the same progress in 2024. We look forward to seeing him developing his skill set in the coming months and years.”
