Celebrity Hairdresser Hosts Masterclass

In 2021, the Hair and Beauty department at Castleford College set up a partnership with Celebrity Hairdresser, Andrew Barton and his Andrew Barton London Education (ABLE) programme, which sees Andrew use his vast experience and knowledge to work with College tutors to create a truly tailored education for students.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Andrew Barton back to Castleford College for the ABLE bespoke day in short hair cutting and styling. A fabulous day for all our students currently on the ABLE scholarship, and a great end to a fantastic year of training.

From creative to classic haircutting and contemporary hairstyling, students are able to learn a range of industry-level skills and abilities as part of the ABLE initiative.

Andrew is renowned as hairdressing royalty and holds a string of awards including British Hairdresser of The Year, British Hair Icon and Honorary Doctorate (Hon D Arts) for his services to the hairdressing industry.

One of the UK’s most celebrated hairdressing names, Andrew’s work graces global magazines from cover to editorial, TV campaign to print advertising and he is on speed dial to the British beauty press.

Whether professionals require tailormade haircutting training or want to discover creative haircutting, my bespoke workshops offer a way for them to adapt their skills or refresh old habits. I thoroughly enjoyed delivering my most recent masterclass at Castleford College, which covered a range of cutting and styling techniques and explored the beautiful colour trends which will take the industry by storm in the year ahead. Elements made the perfect setting for the afternoon and I would like to thank the hairdressing department at Castleford College for their hospitality. The support of the College is incredibly valuable to me and the rest of the Andrew Barton London Education team, as well as the wider hairdressing industry.”

I most enjoy making people look nice, changing their hair, giving them different colours and different types of cuts and just making them feel really good.

We learn different techniques of cutting, different colouring and changing a person’s overall look. In the future I’m hoping to work in a salon and promote myself, and learn to manage other people.

I chose to study at Castleford College as it had the Beauty Therapy course available that I wanted to apply for and it is also local to me. I have progressed from Level 2 Beauty Therapy to the Level 3 Beauty Therapy. This year, I have really enjoyed body massage in the Level 3 course.

My tutor who delivers the Level 3 Beauty Therapy has helped me unbelievably throughout my course by going over routines until there were understood. We went on a trip to a nursery with the college where we painted the nails of the mums group that they held there it was a great event. My dream is to be self-employed and own a salon of my own. This course will help me achieve this by giving me the knowledge and skills to perform a wide range of treatments but also what it’s like to work in a salon environment.

Hair & Beauty department launch new partnership with Keune

Castleford College’s Hair & Beauty department has created new ties with Keune – a leading supplier in the hairdressing and barbering sector for more than 100 years.

Using Keune’s products in the classroom will ensure students’ transition to professional settings is seamless and sustainable, helping to build their confidence in working with professional products.

The partnership will also give students opportunities to enhance their learning via Keune’s online learning platform, London Academy and regional courses.

Hair & Beauty staff from the College have also received Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training from Keune’s team, with workshops, guest talks and competitions planned for students throughout 2024.

Castleford College chose to partner with Keune due to its commitment to sustainability, with Keune recently being awarded B Corp certification. The certification is awarded to companies that meet the high standards of sustainability and social responsibility, considering all aspects including people and suppliers to customers and community.

Wella Done A Spa Day Off Good Hair Day

Huge Congratulations to our ABLE midterm project winners Holly & Tegan, picking up their prizes from celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton during a fabulous day of training at the Wella Studios in Manchester, as part of the ABLE scholarship.

Our Level 3 Beauty students were treated to some relaxing beauty treatments from the professional beauticians at the Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa in Leeds. Spa Manager, Katy, gave them a warm welcome and a snippet of the possibilities ahead in a career in beauty.

Extracurricular Activities

At Castleford College, we like to ensure our students have lots of extracurricular activities throughout the week that they can join. These are a great way to make friends and have a break from their studies, as well as an opportunity to hone a new skill and enjoy themselves whilst doing it!
