For The Edge
Guy Ritchie, St., Troy, IL is terrible. It’s grainy, misog-
There’s cold comfort when you go to see a movie that should be good, but isn’t. If you see a good movie, it’s still good. But help us if we see a bad movie. It’s sometimes all we can talk about. “Wrath of Man” is such a film. I loved the trailer, and had even talked about it with my brother (who also was excited by the prospect of a genuine Jason Statham action movie). It opened at No. 1 at the box office during its first weekend, which isn’t much of a surprise. If you’re remotely well-marketed or feature any popular name, you’ll get there pretty easily. Angelina Jolie’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will prove this point in the next few days. Liam Neeson has revived his career from this type of movie since 2008 when “Taken” was a hit, and, a few months ago, “The Marskman.” I didn’t intend for my column this week to be about bagging on bad movies,I just haven’t seen a good one lately. Point in case, only the first half of Statham’s “Wrath of Man,” directed by
ynistic and told through an out-of-order series of flashbacks that reveal what we kinda already know. Armored car guard Patrick Hill (Statham) was hired on with Los Angeles’ Portico Security to find out who is the inside man responsible for robbing a truck prior to the resulting gun battle that maimed him and killed his son several months earlier. The toxic masculinity that comes out of the offensive nicknames, offensive language and the offensive lone-female role throughout the first 40 minutes is beyond troubling. It soured me about going to action movies in the first place, until the gunfights, shootouts, backstabbing and other fun parts. The non-toxically masculine parts (I suppose I would call them) of unchecked violence in movies is a different conversation for another day. “Wrath of Man’s” second half is marginally better, but the main character’s dispassionate execution and terse lack of dialogue (Statham hallmarks) still doesn’t make up for the damage already done. Josh Hartnett and Jeffrey Donovan co-star.
