Every summer for the last 37 years, the Midwest Salute to the Arts transforms beautiful Moody Park on Longacre into a vibrant celebration of creativity and art. This year’s event from August 22nd-24th, promises to be an extraordinary experience for everyone—couples, date nights, groups of friends, and families alike. Completely free and now in its 37th year, the Midwest Salute to the Arts stands out for its commitment to showcasing the beauty and diversity of art.
Featuring up to 100 artists from across the nation, the festival offers attendees the unique opportunity to meet the creators and watch as they bring their art to life.
The “Salute” has become an annual family event for many of our patrons. Over the years we have watched young artists whose love of art began in our Children’s Gallery and Creation Station grow into loyal patrons who now bring their own children and introduce them to art and its appreciation.
This wonderful event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and our community. Over 300 volunteers have helped to create the Magic that is The Midwest Salute to the Arts, a favorite amongst our artists. Our all-volunteer Arts Council spends countless hours making the event run seamlessly. Without the support of the City of Fairview Heights and the dedication of the City officials
and employees this annual show would not be possible. We cannot adequately express our appreciation for each and every one of you. We are thrilled that you have chosen to spend some time with us. We know that you will enjoy the festival atmosphere, exhibits, shopping and activities. Again, welcome to Moody Park and the City of Fairview Heights.
We thank you for your support! - The Midwest Salute Arts Council Art for Everyone, Art Everyday
“Our mission is to provide a successful forum to bring art to the region and promote art appreciation, while helping to impact art lovers in our city and surrounding area”
Welcome to the 37th Annual Midwest Salute to the Arts!
As Mayor of Fairview Heights, it is both an honor and a joy to welcome you to the 37th Annual Midwest Salute to the Arts – a cherished tradition that continues to grow in beauty, creativity, and community spirit year after year.
Since its beginning in 1988, the Salute has become one of the premier fine art shows in the Midwest. It is a celebration of imagination and talent, featuring nationally recognized artists, emerging creatives, and master craftsmen from across the country. This festival is more than an even – it is a tribute to the power of the arts to inspire, connect, and uplift.
While you’re here, we invite you to explore all that Fairview Heights has to offer. Whether you’re strolling through one of our seven community parks, working up a sweat at The REC, enjoying a restful stay in one of our welcoming hotels, or treating yourself to a meal at one of our many outstanding restaurants – including several exciting new additions to our dining scene –you’re sure to find something that makes your visit memorable. Fairview Heights is also home to a variety of well-known retailers, making it a favorite destination for shopping and entertainment.
On behalf of our City Council, our elected officials, local businesses, residents and myself – thank you for being part of this beloved tradition. Your presence helps keep the spirit of the arts alive in our city,
and we’re truly grateful you’re here to celebrate with us.
Warmest regards,
Mark T. Kupsky, Mayor City of Fairview Heights
It started 30-plus years ago when former alderman, Gene Ellerbusch, visited the Mystic, Connecticut, Outdoor Art Festival and realized that Fairview Heights, Illinois, might be able to present a similar outdoor event. The City Council appointed Mrs. Billy McLemore as head of a committee to explore the possibility. The project had begun.
Mystic was revisited, and other art fairs were contacted, including the renowned Festival of the Masters in Orlando, Florida. When their search was finished, it became apparent that Fairview Heights had the resources and the spirit to present such an event. The decision was made – let’s do it!
The Midwest Salute to the Masters was established with the goal of combining the community involvement of the Mystic show with the ultra-high standards of the Orlando “Masters” show. After much hard work and untold hours of planning, the first Midwest Salute to the Masters was held on the weekend of Oct. 1 and 2, 1988. It was received with both critical and popular acclaim.
Today, the show is known as the Midwest Salute to the Arts. The all-volunteer staff continues to work toward the common goal of presenting one of the premier art festivals in the country.

Kidnapped by buddies to an open-mic night, Greg performed publicly for the first time in 1978, singing his only tune, “Song for Sailors,” written just before leaving a Benedictine Monastery in 1977.
The song was well received, but stayed underground with many other new songs until 1996, when his sister, Jean, organized the family to give Greg two hours in a recording studio for his fortieth birthday. A tape of that session was aired almost immediately. Encouraged, he went on to produce his first CD, To Soul.
Three months after the release of To Soul, Greg’s larynx was split during a “touch” football game. There’s a two inch scar under his Adam’s apple where the surgeon opened his throat, drilled six holes in his larynx, and wired it back together. Greg’s voice was altered, but not drastically, and in 2002 he created, One Soul, a more highly produced CD. Greg’s music has been compared to that of Richie Havens, Steve Forbert and Cat Stevens. Greg has opened for internationally recognized author, Dr. Joan Borysenko, and folk legend, Jack Williams and performed multiple times for IANDS.
“Greg’s June, 2025 performance at The Focal Point was well received. Greg’s opened for New York Times best selling author, Dr. Joan Borysenko, and folk legend, Jack Williams, and performed multiple times for the International Association of Near Death Studies.”

One of the art festival’s unique experiences, curated by ArtVillage Fairview Heights and acclaimed artist Catharine Magel, coincides with the Salute. Now in its 3rd year, Uncommon Collaboration: An Exploration in Contemporary Sculpture, a temporary exhibit, goes up a short time before the arts festival and comes down shortly after, making a visit to the Midwest Salute to the Arts the perfect time to interact with this one-of-a-kind curated presentation of art pieces. Last year’s sculpture exhibit featured seventeen sculptures, providing an up-close and personal journey for visitors to explore themes of self-discovery through large sculptures made of various materials and metals. This year’s exhibit “Uncommon Collaboration: An Exploration in Contemporary Sculpture,” once again curated by ArtVillage and Magel, will feature a new slate of sculptures from 19 artists, including a special showcase from the Webster University Ceramics Students. This is guaranteed to stir attendees’ imagination.
This temporary sculpture exhibit, within the Midwest Salute to the Arts festival, works like a self-guided outdoor museum tour. Attendees can immerse themselves in innovative and collaborative works reflective of uncommon collaborations that push the boundaries of traditional sculpture. Some sculptures feature interactive elements, inviting visitors to engage directly with the art. Visitors can then vote for their favorite sculpture to win the 2025’s People’s Choice Award, announced at the end of the art festival.

Tony Borchardt has been creating ceramics for over 30 years. While pursuing his BFA and MFA degrees, he trained as a production potter, specializing in skill-building and utilitarian pottery. He continues to produce innovative and functional ceramic works, showcasing his art at prominent national art fairs and exhibitions. “As a young artist, I explored various media. While in college, I initially focused on drawing and pastels, soon discovering a passion for working with clay. I enjoyed every aspect of pottery—from the building techniques and three-dimensionality to skill development and the ability to manipulate and create textures”.
As a teacher, Tony has taught in various community and higher educational settings for over 25 years. During this time, he has served as an associate professor of fine arts and gallery director at his former alma mater, Fontbonne University. His curriculum includes ceramics, fibers, sculpture, and 3D design. Currently, he teaches small group lessons at his home studio in Florissant, MO, and continues to exhibit his work nationally.
Jane Barrow retired in 2021 after twenty-five years of teaching as area head of painting in the Department of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. While at SIUE, a terrific team of colleagues and a wide range of students at both the undergraduate and graduate level have sharpened Barrow’s enthusiasm for and understanding of the many disciplines within the arts.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally with private and corporate collections. Earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI, and her Master of Fine Arts at Indiana University in Bloomington, Barrow is now retired and working full time as a painter with an exhibition at the Duane Reed Gallery, in St. Louis this upcoming December.
Silas Coggeshall earned his MFA in Painting from Souther Illinois University in 2022. He currently works as an Academic Advisor and Program Specialist at Southwestern Illinois College.
He maintains his painting practice with the assistance of ArtVillage in Fairview Heights, and lives with his life partner, two bonus children, and numerous pets.

I received a Bachelor in Arts degree and the Outstanding Artist Award of my graduating class from the College of Charleston. After graduating life took me down a different path. For the last 25 years I have been teaching first grade and loving it. When COVID came into our lives my path changed once again. I still teach, but pursue my art at the same time.
In 2021 I was chosen to be a part of the St. Louis Art Fair Emerging Artist Program. Since then I’ve been invited to show my work in shows in and around the St. Louis and Illinois area and even had a piece displayed on Donnybrook. I was recognized with two awards at the Midwest Salute to the Arts in Fairview Heights on August 25, 2024. I received an Award of Excellence in my category and the Arts Council Choice Award for my iris. I have had artwork at Elliot Robertson CPA from Jan-April 2025 in Springfield, MO, Gretchen Brigham Gallery on N. Union Blvd, Grafton, Illinois and Green Door Art Gallery.
I love working with oils. Oil is a medium which allows more flexibility, the ability to work more freely, changing and forming the image as I go along. I like working large and focusing on an image, its composition, drawing the viewer in, noticing the shape/ shapes, texture, and color. I tell my first graders I don’t want unnecessary white space, I want big, bold, and beautiful. I just have fun and paint what makes me happy.
