Unblurred lines: Keith Haring’s niece opening own show in Edwardsville

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Yenna Hill is used to being compared to her uncle, the late Keith Haring — and she’s OK with it. Hill — who will have her first national solo exhibition “Muse User” at Good Weather Gallery, 301 N. Main St., in Edwardsville — will surely talk about her uncle many more times at the exhibit’s opening reception 6-9 p.m. on Saturday. The works of her uncle have experienced a revival, especially with younger generations interested in pop art and styles that grew from the 1980s New York graffiti subculture.

“I think it’s so cool that younger kids are still into his work,” said Hill, 35, who was nearly 5 years old when Haring, at 31, died Feb. 16, 1990, of AIDS-related complications. Haring embraced free street and public art early on, drawing bold chalk figures in New York City’s subway centers on blank black advertising spaces. As his popularity grew and he was commissioned to create large-scale colorful murals, he still voluntarily produced public art for hospitals, schools and spaces for children — like his niece, Hill, now a mother of an 11-year-old daughter, Harlow Moon Hill. “I was wearing his artwork on shirts

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, May 20, 2021 • 5 growing up, and either people didn’t know it or thought I was really rich,” Hill said with a laugh. She said she worked as a bartender before the pandemic shut things down and is back at it today a couple times a week in Reading, Pennsylvania, where Haring and Hill’s mother, writer Kay Haring, were born. Now her mother and her sister, Lana Hill, along with husband Tanner Spaulding, live just outside of Baltimore. Spaulding is a friend of Good Weather Gallery’s owner/curator Brooke Peipert of Alton. Yenna Hill lives in Reading, about two and a half hours from New York City. “I remember being in New York and remember when he’d come visit at our grandmother’s house — ‘Uncle Keith is

coming today,’ she’d say,” said Hill of their paternal grandparent, Joan Haring. “He was a conduit between the two places — Pennsylvania and New York. “Talking about Keith is really interesting,” she said. “Because I’ve been talking about him my whole life, I kind of know him better in death than in life.” Hill has her own story, too. She went through many stages of artistry before feeling as confident as she does today with bold, black lines — a trademark of Haring’s work. His followers and collectors became some of his closest famous friends such as Madonna. To this day, his unmistakable artwork and expressions of love for Haring are often included in the superstar’s concert productions and backdrops. “I was always interested in line work, but I didn’t want to

copy him,” Hill said. Haring was among the first high-profile New York personalities to contract HIV, develop AIDS and dedicate time as an activist to raise awareness of the virus that spread rapidly in New York in the 1980s, especially among gay men. Haring, an openly gay artist, is a hero to the LGBTQ-plus community and its supporters. He inspired his friends, followers and collectors through his artistic expression, raising awareness about issues such as apartheid, drug abuse and gay rights. “There are qualities in my body of work and history related to him and other people,” Hill said. “My grandfather was a big part of that. He reviewed my artwork and taught me to do things.” Her grandfather, Allen Haring, influenced both her uncle and Hill. “He’s the one who taught Keith to draw,” she said. “We’ve all done it; the whole family would be drawing. It’s just something we did.” Hill said she knew she would work in lines; that wouldn’t change. “Keith loved that heavy black line,” she said. “But in my early 20s, hanging with artists and creative people, I concluded I had to find my own line.” She developed her own style after a 2013 trip to Paris for huge Keith Haring tributes and Sotheby’s Auction with the Keith Haring Foundation. She also got a Haring tattoo in Belgium. “That turned into my art epiphany,” said Hill, who bartended on and off to be on the European trip. “I was already trying to be a professional artist, but after that show and tat, I felt like something changed, took off, and I completely understood him more from the Paris shows,”

Cindy Reinhardt For the Intelligencer

This Old House: At home in Leclaire

Editor’s Note: In recognition of National Historic Preservation Month in May, local historian Cindy Reinhardt tells the stories behind some of Edwardsville’s historic buildings in a series of eight articles. In early 1927, an insurance and real estate man, Harlan Bartlett, purchased Lot 20 of Block 23 in Leclaire from the N.O. Nelson Company. A few months later, after having a house erected on the property, he sold the new home at 1219 Emerson Ave. to Anna Abert, a widow from near Kaufman Station and her daughter, also Anna Abert, known as Ann or Annie. Anna and Ann, together, and Ann after her mother’s death in 1948, would live at the house on Emerson Avenue until 1984. Fortunately, thanks to Anna’s granddaughters, Fern Scheller and Shirley Olsen, and great-granddaughter, Audrey Steiner, a clear picture of life in Leclaire during that time period is preserved in their memories and family photographs. Anna Margaret Rabberman was born in 1866 in St. Clair County, Illinois. She was the daughter of German immigrant farmers

who moved to a farm near Alhambra in the early 1870s. In 1888, Anna married August Frederick Abert, an area farmer who was born in Germany in 1859 and immigrated with his parents when he was 8 years old. The Aberts had five children who survived to adulthood, Louis, Albert, Lena, August, Edward and Anna. They raised their children on the family farm near Kaufman Station northeast of Edwardsville. They had been married 37 years when August died in 1935. By this time their children were all married with families except Ann, who was their youngest. Mother and daughter were both very petite, Anna only about 5-foot in height, and Ann not much taller. They could not physically do the manual labor required on a farm, so the decision was made to lease the farm to Anna’s son, Edward. His family moved to the farm while Anna and Ann moved to their new house on Emerson. By this time Anna was nearly 60 and would be “at home” the rest of her life, living off income from the farm. Ann, 27, applied for a job at the F. W. Woolworth store in Edwardsville where she would work for 34 years. Ann was a thoroughly modern woman. She owned and drove a

car before many other women of her time and enjoyed working outside the home. By the late 1930s, Anna was getting elderly. Since Ann was working during the day, one of Edward’s children, Shirley Abert, began spending summers at the house on Emerson at a very young age to provide company for her grandmother while her Aunt Ann was at work. Shirley remembers that at the time, only 6-7 years old, she didn’t like it because she wanted to stay on the farm with her seven siblings, but in hindsight, she recognizes that her grandmother and aunt “treated me like a queen.” They doted on her and didn’t ask anything of her in return except her company. Shirley paints a vivid picture of what life was like in the 1930s and 1940s. “We had an ice box just inside the kitchen door,” she said. “We put a placard in the front window so the iceman would know what size ice block we needed. He would bring it around to the backdoor, let himself in (because the doors were never locked) and put the ice in the ice box.” Ann Abert didn’t get an electric refrigerator until the 1950s. The house had a living room and dining

Where the experts are in 2021

room separated by a large double doorway. The living room featured an antique pump organ that her Aunt Ann would often play. In the evenings, after supper when dishes were done (dishes were never allowed to sit), they would listen to the radio. In warm weather, many hours were spent on the front porch swing. There were two bedrooms on the first floor separated by a shared bathroom. Anna and Ann each had their own room and Shirley would sleep with Ann when she was there. There was a basement and an attic storage room that as a child she wasn’t encouraged to visit. On occasional visits to the attic, she remembered a large old bed covered with stacks of quilts and many boxes. The attic was where they kept the large platters and pots needed for holiday meals which were a regular occurrence on Emerson. Numerous relatives remember the many family gatherings at “Aunt Annie’s house.” Shirley remembers that her Aunt Ann did most of the household chores despite working full-time. When there was something requiring more strength than she had, the Krejcis next door were always willing to help if it couldn’t wait for a family visit.

She mowed the lawn and, with her mother, tended flower and vegetable gardens in the yard. She also found time for a long list of local organizations, including Eden Church, where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years. Because high school was not otherwise available, Shirley lived with her grandmother and her aunt during the week and went home to the farm on weekends throughout her high school years in the late 1940s. When she turned 16, her Aunt Ann arranged for a part-time job after school and on weekends at Woolworth’s. There was a garage at the back of the property where Ann kept her old Chevrolet. Shirley remembers one day there was snow too deep to drive through. Ann’s dedication to Woolworth’s was such that she and Shirley walked through the deep snow from the house on Emerson to Woolworth’s which was on the corner lot where the MCT Station is today at the corner of Hillsboro and North Main Streets. Ann never married, but sometime in the 1930s she met John Schroeber, a Hamel area farmer whose brother married Ann’s best friend. They began dating, and this good-hearted man became such a part of their lives that a great-niece said that, as a child, she thought they were married since he was always around. John even attended family reunions. They dated for over 30 years. Anna’s nieces suspect Ann left the farm in her mid-twenties and just didn’t want to return to farm life. The white bungalow on Emerson was kept in pristine condition by Anna and Ann. After nearly 30 years though, the Abert home began showing its age. The house was purchased last year by a company that is in the process of restoring the house. The women who made it their home for so many years would be pleased. Sources for this article include materials at the Madison County Archival Library, articles from past issues of The Edwardsville Intelligencer, records from the Recorder of Deeds Office, interviews with numerous family members and a family tree developed for the Abert family. If you have questions about this article, contact Cindy Reinhardt at cynreinhardt@ yahoo.com.

What Renovations Add Value to Your Home?

Helping YOU Find the Perfect Home Loan SUE CRESS | NMLS # 488271

scress@townandcountrybank.com

A home’s value is in the eye of the beholder. The same goes for its renovations. What appeals to one potential buyer may not to others. But some remodeling projects generally help.

Before you decide what to do, research prices for homes in your subdivision. Before you decide what to do, research prices for homes in your subdivision. According to a recent Forbes article on increasing your home value, “If they top out at $500,000 and yours is already $475,000, you may lose money if your project is more than $25,000.” If you need to remodel, consider these projects that are likely to please buyers and add to its purchase price:

•

Insulation – “Making sure you have sufficient insulation is the biggest item that

•

New Roof – The National Association of Realtor’s (NAR) says you’ll get back all

•

New Hardwood Floor – As homeowners become more environmentally

•

Garage Door – If your door looks bad, replace it. Curb appeal is crucial. If yours doesn’t work, replace it. “The national average is that you will recoup 94% of the cost when you sell your home,” Cress says. “But if your garage door looks and works fine, keep it because you may not get that much of a return.”

•

Kitchens and Bathrooms – “You hear that those are important to update in order to sell, but your taste and a future buyer’s may differ,” says Cress. “You’re supposed to get 64 cents return on value for every dollar you spend updating a bathroom, but it will depend on what you do and the buyer’s taste.” Interior designers often recommend doing a minor bathroom remodel by replacing your tub, tiles, toilet, sink, vanity, or any fixtures to generate the greatest return on your money.

•

Windows – Windows are like roofs, if they are attractive and functioning properly,

can increase the value of your home,” says Sue Cress, Mortgage Lender with Town and Country Bank in Edwardsville. “It will appeal to buyers and reduce your utility bills.” Many prospective buyers want to see a home’s utility bills from the past two years. To learn if you have enough insulation, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends getting a qualified home energy auditor or doing it yourself. Several utility companies provide energy audits. Check with your local provider to see if such services are offered in your area!

of your costs for a new roof and more when you sell your home. Your return on investment will be more than 100%. “Many realtors have told me that if a potential buyer sees a problem with the roof, it immediately reduces the home’s value a great deal because they will have to redo the roof, which can cost $10,000,” Cress says. If your roof is in good condition, leave it alone.

conscious, natural wood floors are growing in popularity. Installing a new hardwood floor will definitely pay off, according to the NAR, which calculated that your return on investment will be 106%. However, it found that you’ll lose money if you refinish a tired hardwood floor.

let them be. You’ll get back about 72 cents for every dollar you spend replacing windows. “Ask yourself if you’ll be in the house long enough to justify that cost or if you’re putting that money in just to try to sell the house, because you’re not going to get that much bang for your buck,” says Cress. Keep in mind, however, that leaky windows will cost you and a future buyer in utility bills.

If you’re considering selling, you can ask realtors to tour your house and give suggestions about how to improve its salability. Search for articles online about home buying trends and make sure your home’s front is attractive. Curb appeal can make or break a deal! she said. Hill said that, throughout middle and high school, she was always the “go to” if someone needed nice lettering or a drawing. “I was that person,” said Hill, who actually focused more on writing and packing drama classes at that age. “I wrote madly until about

25. After I dropped out of college, I was just going to read as many books as I could and figure out how to make money, so I made art.” She said that, in 2008 while working a “boring” 9-to-5 desk job, she started drawing all the time.

“I ordered these expensive gel pens and figured out these heavy dark lines, making images and asking people what they thought. But it was cool because that helps to self identify,” she said. “You can’t see what other people are seeing.” She became hyper-focused on body painting in 2011 while continuing her line work. When 2013 came around she pushed herself to a different level. Because of travel with her

mom in Hawaii, she adopted a Polynesian influence. In 2015, a friend told Hill her artwork looked like henna and invited her to Maui — which fell into more line work for another year until 2016. “Ever since then, I’ve been back in Pennsylvania busting my ass, getting deep in the mix, layering lines and images, not just lines,” she said. “I draw faces all the time — masks, protective talismans — to bring people some-

thing to meditate with, and see something different each time.” Hill said she hasmet a lot of people who came to know her as an artist. She also does art modeling, henna, art markets and local group shows. “I started bartending right before the pandemic happened,” she said. “It was good for me, for sociology and forming my inspirations, so much better than holing away just doing art.” Besides businesses where her art is hung, opening at Edwardsville’s Good Weather will be her first gallery show. “My sister is so supportive of the gallery,” Hill said. “Without COVID happening, life

COVID was a time to paint.” Good Weather Gallery and Hill’s Muse User exhibit will show at least 20 pieces of Hill’s work with most, if not all, for sale. There will be a virtual exhibit at www. goodweatherartgallery.com, as well as some open hours for in-person viewing at the gallery. The work can be viewed in-person by appointment. Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

Going Green

When you hear someone say they are “going green,” you may jump to the conclusion that they are going to start recycling; they began to use filtered water instead of bottled water to reduce waste in landfills; they are turning out lights to reduce use of electricity in their homes or are only using natural “green” products for cleaning. But since you know this is a food column, you may be a little curious Vicki about how to go green Bennington with food. A story simply about vegetables is way too obvious, but no matter how much you guess, unless you read ahead, I bet you wouldn’t think I was talking about chocolate dessert. How can chocolate go green? As my brother always says, “I just tell it; I can’t explain it.” And I will have to second that. That same brother’s wife tried out a recipe on us that really took me by surprise: Healthy Chocolate Mousse. That

might not sound so out of the ordinary. But she is always looking for or concocting healthy foods, and came up with a recipe for Healthy Chocolate Mousse that actually utilizes the super healthy avocado as its base. What? you might ask. It is almost hard to believe once you taste it. And I knew ahead of time. We even fooled my husband who had no idea what was in it until we told him - after he had already eaten it. Not only is it a delicious dessert, but you benefit from all the wonderful attributes of that little green avocado, including a long list of vitamins and nutrients, more potassium than a banana, heart-healthy fat, fiber and antioxidants. And the mousse tastes great. My sister-in-law has sprung a lot of “healthy” dishes on us over the years. She is gluten intolerant and has other food allergies, so she is always searching for dishes that fit in with her “clean eating” style to keep those allergies at bay – yet taste delicious. She developed – or at least discovered –

these food allergies as an adult, and once she began changing what she ate, she was amazed at how much better she felt. But it’s been hard work for her, reading every label, down to the most minute ingredient – even food coloring – to ensure a pain-free, allergy-free day. But over time, she’s learned what works, what doesn’t, what tastes good and what others whom she cooks for will like, too. Another bonus – she’s become more interested in food, in general, and loves to cook and come up with new recipes. Not that she didn’t cook before, but it’s become more of a challenge now, and she likes to make people happy with what she makes. We all declared this Healthy Chocolate Mousse a win, and I will continue to make it for a quick and easy, and yes, healthy dessert. Even cocoa powder is considered good for you, and maple syrup is a sweetener that is on the clean eating list as a great substitute for granulated sugar. Oddly enough, it’s actually sweeter than sugar, so here’s a tip: If you use it as a replacement in other recipes,

add 3/4 the amount of syrup that you would of the granulated sugar. Healthy Chocolate Mousse 4 large, ripe avocados (or 6 smaller ones), peeled and pitted 10 to 12 ounces maple syrup (depending on desired sweetness) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 to 3/4 cup of cocoa powder (depending on desired level of chocolate flavor) Fruit or other toppings (optional) Mix all ingredients in a blender or food processor until well blended and very smooth. Eat immediately, or refrigerate if you want it to set more. Top with whipped cream, caramel syrup, nuts, berries or coconut flakes – the sky is the limit. In this column, Bennington shares her love of food and all that entails, from special dishes at local and regional restaurants to new trends and fads, and things to try at home. Contact her at vbennington@sbcglobal.net with comments, ideas or suggestions.

Let’s go back to the movies

EDWARDSVILLE — Tuesday night movies are back in-person at The Wildey. The series was canceled for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our last Tuesday movie was March 10, 2020,” said The Wildey Theatre manager, Al Canal, “although we have done a couple of movies since then with limited capacity. “So many times during the pandemic, people have told me how much they miss the movies,” he said. “The first four will be a test to see how we’re going to do things.” Tuesday movies’ tickets cost $3 per person, which is a $1 more from previous years, but still a bargain. “The state had gone up to 25 percent capacity, which is 83 people for us, but with the move to the Bridge Phase (of the Restore Illinois plan), we can do 60 percent capacity, which doesn’t include vaccinated people,” Canal said. “If you have enough people who show up vaccinated, you can have a full house, but I’m not ready to do that yet,” he said. “At least for the first two weeks, I’m limiting attendance to a little under 50 percent, which is 150 people. I’m not doing reserved seating, but the reduced capacity will make people a little more comfortable.” For the first four weeks of movies, people who show their

COVID-19 vaccination card will receive free admission. “It’s a thank you to the community for getting vaccinated,” Canal said. “For everyone -- if you’re not sitting in your seat, masks will still be required. That includes when you’re going to get some of our world-famous Wildey popcorn.” “An American in Paris” kicked off the Tuesday night movie series this week. The 1951 musical-comedy, inspired by the 1928 George Gershwin composition of the same name, stars Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron in her film debut. The story of the film is interspersed with dance numbers choreographed by Kelly and set to Gershwin’s music. The second movie, “42,” is May 25, which tells the story of Jackie Robinson, the first Black athlete to play in Major League Baseball during the modern era. The 2013 film stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, also with Harrison Ford in a supporting role. The movie title references Robinson’s jersey number, which was retired across all MLB teams in 1997. Boseman died of colon cancer at age 42 last August, about one year after his starring role in “Black Panther.” “We’re doing a sports theme for the second week and Chadwick Boseman, who we lost way too soon, is an amazing actor who is excellent as Jackie Robinson,” Canal said. “It’s baseball season and the topic of the movie is not just baseball, but also about diversity.”

“The Wedding Singer” is June 1. The 1998 romantic comedy, starring Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore and Christine Taylor, tells the story of a wedding singer who falls in love with a waitress. “It’s wedding season and I like to mix up themes, so we’re going with ‘The Wedding Singer,’” Canal said. “It’s a very funny movie, and it was one of the popular movies of its time.” “North by Northwest,” the 1959 spy thriller produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, plays June 8, starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. It’s a tale of mistaken identity, with an innocent man pursued across the U.S. by agents of a mysterious organization trying to prevent him from blocking their smuggling plan. “We’re going back to a classic with ‘North by Northwest’ and it’s one of the best Alfred Hitchcock films,” Canal said. “It features an amazing performance by Cary Grant in one of his best roles.” As early as June 11, The Wildey expects to resume concerts with full capacity. The schedule for the remainder of the year features dozens of shows that have been postponed multiple times, with more shows to be added. For a full schedule of upcoming movies and concerts or more information, visit http://www.wildeytheatre.com/ or call 618-307-1750.

After an absence of more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the at The Wildey Theatre restarted its Tuesday night movie series this past Tuesday.

Guy Ritchie, St., Troy, IL is terrible. It’s grainy, misog-

There’s cold comfort when you go to see a movie that should be good, but isn’t. If you see a good movie, it’s still good. But help us if we see a bad movie. It’s sometimes all we can talk about. “Wrath of Man” is such a film. I loved the trailer, and had even talked about it with my brother (who also was excited by the prospect of a genuine Jason Statham action movie). It opened at No. 1 at the box office during its first weekend, which isn’t much of a surprise. If you’re remotely well-marketed or feature any popular name, you’ll get there pretty easily. Angelina Jolie’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will prove this point in the next few days. Liam Neeson has revived his career from this type of movie since 2008 when “Taken” was a hit, and, a few months ago, “The Marskman.” I didn’t intend for my column this week to be about bagging on bad movies,I just haven’t seen a good one lately. Point in case, only the first half of Statham’s “Wrath of Man,” directed by

ynistic and told through an out-of-order series of flashbacks that reveal what we kinda already know. Armored car guard Patrick Hill (Statham) was hired on with Los Angeles’ Portico Security to find out who is the inside man responsible for robbing a truck prior to the resulting gun battle that maimed him and killed his son several months earlier. The toxic masculinity that comes out of the offensive nicknames, offensive language and the offensive lone-female role throughout the first 40 minutes is beyond troubling. It soured me about going to action movies in the first place, until the gunfights, shootouts, backstabbing and other fun parts. The non-toxically masculine parts (I suppose I would call them) of unchecked violence in movies is a different conversation for another day. “Wrath of Man’s” second half is marginally better, but the main character’s dispassionate execution and terse lack of dialogue (Statham hallmarks) still doesn’t make up for the damage already done. Josh Hartnett and Jeffrey Donovan co-star.

Andy Garcia has a bit part. Scott Eastwood proves he can be unlikable, after all, in this movie. I had a hunch I should just have gone to see the “Sesame Street” documentary. It’s called “Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street” and I’m going to that next. So what does the calendar hold with summer coming fast? Jolie as a firefighter, covered already above. Memorial Day weekend will finally show us “A Quiet Place II” (COVID-delayed more than one year now) and Emma Stone’s “Cruella.”

My birthday week (mid-June) has openings of “Queen Bees” has Ellen Burstyn and James Caan in a romantic comedy. “North by Northwest” shows for $2 Tuesday at The Wildey Theatre (welcome back!) , and, if you’ve never explored your proper appreciation of Alfred Hitchcock, Gary Grant, or Mount Rushmore, then you should probably take this opportunity. “Wrath of Man” runs 119 minutes and is rated R for violence throughout, pervasive language, and some sexual references. I give this film one star out of four.

Eurovision Song Contest is back, ready to defy the pandemic

By MIKE CORDER Associated Press

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Pounding beats? Check. Uplifting lyrics? Check. Huge, backlit white wings? Check. After last year’s Eurovision Song Contest was canceled amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, it is roaring back to life this year with coronavirus bubbles added to its heady mix of music and melodrama. National delegations traveling to the Dutch port city of Rotterdam are abiding by strict measures to reduce the risk of infections, while the thousands of fans allowed to attend dress rehearsals, two semifinals and the grand final on Saturday will have to undergo testing to ensure they do not bring the virus into the cavernous venue. Executive producer Sietse Bakker is glad it’s going ahead at all. “Organizing the Eurovision Song Contest is always challenging because you have less than a year to organize one of the biggest and most complex events in Europe, but to do it in a pandemic is much, much more complicated,” he told The Associated Press. Despite the pandemic measures, the contest that aims to unite Europe in song is continuing its 65-year tradition of upbeat fun. Fans near the Ahoy arena can get into the swing of the event early. Traffic lights at a pedestrian walkway outside the venue have been transformed so that a green figure dances to Abba’s iconic 1974 winning song “Waterloo” when it’s safe to cross. The immensely popular event mixes high camp — at rehearsals, Norway’s Andreas Haukeland, known as TIX, performed his song “Fallen Angel” in huge white wings — with lyrics encouraging inclusion and positivity while avoiding political messages. Belarus was booted out before the contest even started because organizers the European Broadcasting Union said the country’s original song “puts the nonpolitical nature of the Contest in question.” A replacement song also was rejected.

The theme for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is “Open up.” It was actually chosen before the pandemic derailed public life around the globe, but is now very apt as Europe begins to tentatively emerge from the coronavirus pandemic. “We decided to keep the theme because, especially in these times, it’s important that we are open towards each other and that we feel the possibility to open up to one another, to show our true feelings, emotions and thoughts,” Bakker said. The 2019 Dutch winner, Duncan Laurence, says on the event’s website that he sees music as a way of forging links. “That’s why we need the Eurovision Song Contest. To feel connected again.” Thousands of fans will be able to make the connection in person. Each event will be open to 3,500 people — only about 20% of the capacity of the arena — who must show a negative test result that is less than 24 hours old. The top 10 from each semifinal joins France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom

— together with host country the Netherlands — in the final. Voting is conducted in each participating country by a panel of music industry experts and viewers. The pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s event and this year prevented Australian singer Montaigne from flying to Rotterdam. The Netherlands is hosting the event because the country won the last time the contest was held, in 2019. Montaigne is still taking part, but by sending in a recorded live performance. She’s not the only one missing out. The mother of Dutch entrant Jeangu Macrooy also is unable to attend as she can’t travel from her home in Suriname. Swedish singer Tusse’s father wants to know if he can vote for him from his home in Congo. Ukraine had a scare when the lead singer of its band, Go_A, Kateryna Pavlenko, had to skip a rehearsal in Rotterdam and get tested after feeling unwell. The result was negative and she was welcomed back.

She and her band are among 39 national entrants vying for a coveted victory that can be a springboard to a global career or a fleeting taste of fame. For many, the stage and global television audience of millions is a chance to express messages of inclusion and positivity. Russia’s performer, Manizha, sings a song whose lyrics include the lines: “Every Russian Woman. Needs to know. You’re strong enough to bounce against the wall.” The singer, whose family fled to Russia from Tajikistan, said the message is for women all over the world “because we need to be, we have to be brave. We need to be happier. And I’m happy that I can inspire them on that stage because, you know, Eurovision stage is the one of the hugest stages in the world.” Maltese singer Destiny also has a message of body positivity and is tipped to take it to the final. The 18-year-old’s powerful voice helped her win the Junior Eurovision contest and reach the semifinals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2017.

Amid the many over-the-top performances, the relatively restrained song “Voil√†” by French singer Barbara Pravi has emerged as the bookmakers’ favorite. Cyprus’ performer Elena Tsagrinou has already been in the spotlight after Orthodox Christian faithful on the Mediterranean island protested that it promoted satanic worship. Tsagrinou says her song, “El Diablo,” which she performs flanked by four dancers in skin-tight red costumes, was misinterpreted and is actually about an abusive relationship between two lovers. She laughs off the controversy that saw protesters hold up wooden crosses and sing hymns outside of Cyprus’ state broadcaster in March. Tsagrinou said dealing with the COVID-19 restrictions is tough ahead of the contest, “but that’s not going to keep us back and we’re going to feel the vibe that we want to feel and the smile on our face.” — This story corrects the spelling of Diablo in the Cyprus song title.

Janet Jackson’s ensembles from “Scream” video sold for $125K

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ‚Äî Janet Jackson’s ensembles she wore in the “Scream” music video opposite of her brother Michael Jackson are among the items up for bid in a three-day auction. Julien’s Auctions says her black circular bubble textured fabric long-sleeve shirt, black patent leather pants and black patent leather over-the-ankle boots sold for $125,000 Saturday. The auction called “Iconic Treasures From the Legendary Career and Life of Janet Jackson” will be held until Sunday, the singer’s 55th birthday.

Jackson partnered with Juilen’s Auctions to sell more than 1,000 items from her career and personal treasures. The auction was held live in Beverly Hills, California, and shown on Julien’s website. A portion of the proceeds will go toward Compassion International, an organization that helps children escape from poverty. Jackson’s floor-length metallic silver coat with lambskin shearling lining, cuffs and collar, designed by Helen Storey, was bought for $50,000. Her silver string bikini and a pair

of matching pants worn underneath the coat by Jackson sold for $25,600. On Friday, Jackson’s original jacket from her 1990 Rhythm Nation Tour along with a black “1814” cap and black satin gloves with metal plaque decoration was sold for $81,250. Other items such as Jackson’s silver-tone hoop earring suspending a key worn at the 1987 Soul Train Awards and her Rhythm Nation Tour sold for $43,750.

Things have changed. Cancer hasn’t.

Recent challenges have inspired us to be more self-reliant. But there are some things you can’t do by yourself – like a colonoscopy. Don’t worry. You’re covered. We’ve taken extra precautions so that our facilities are safe. Because while our world has changed, cancer hasn’t, and early detection is the key to good outcomes.

While a colonoscopy is the gold standard, there are several screening options, including simple at-home tests.

To schedule your colonoscopy, call (618) 474-7871. osfhealthcare.org/colon-screening
