In a new location this year, the BLACKBEARAMERICANAMUSICFEST will be at Harwinton Fairgrounds in Harwinton the weekend of Aug. 22 through 24

The festival previously was held in Goshen in October. Organizers said the change was partially due to more enjoyable weather and a more walkabout, community focused layout.

The festival offers over 50 bands on four stages, covering rock, blues, folk and bluegrass. The event kicks off on Friday, Aug. 22 at noon and ends at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Later in the year, the Soundside Music Festival at the end of September has become a cultural destination for many. Held at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, the festival has and continues to draw big names as headliners, with this year’s acts including The Killers, Weezer, and Vampire Weekend.

While Connecticut’s summer weather will draw many to its beautiful shoreline and stunning parks and nature preserves, the state also has many other points of interest. Some of them are not on the average visitor’s list, but still worth the checking out.

Gillette Castle

Lyme, the castle was designed and built by William Gillette (1853–1937), an American actor most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage. Gillette, a Hartford native, named his 24-room mansion the “Seventh Sister.” Some rumor that there is a room dedicated to Gillette’s alter ego within the castle.

Museum of Puppetry

Part of the University of Connecticut’s School of Fine Arts, the Ballard Institute and the MUSEUM OF PUPPETRY complements the school’s puppet arts program. The museum currently has over 3,000 puppets. Current exhibits include the masks and puppets of Ralph Lee. Lee had created masks and puppets for theater and dance projects and from Lee’s partnerships with theater companies. Also included are masks and giant figures that appeared in the Greenwich Village Halloween parade, co-founded by Lee. Holy Land

Seated atop Pine Hill in Waterbury, HOLYLAND USA was originally developed by local attorney John Baptist Greco. With various attractions inspired by passages in the Bible, this park is meant to provide a peaceful place for the community to come together—and has been a historic site of the area for decades. It is now part of the efforts to revitalize Waterbury. It consists of a chapel, Stations of the Cross, replicas of catacombs and more Visitors are welcome to walk around Holy Land during daylight hours. The Glass House

Located in New Canaan, THEGLASSHOUSE, built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Philip Johnson, is a National Trust Historic Site. The property’s 49-acre landscape comprises fourteen structures, including the Glass House (1949), and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions. Tours of the site are available in April through November and advance reservations are recommended. The property is currently open for the summer season. The Button Museum

Located in Waterbury’s Mattatuck Museum, THE BUTTONMUSEUM was inspired by Waterbury’s highly impactful button manufacturing industry since the 18th century. According to the museum’s website, more than 10,000 buttons are on permanent display in the Button Gallery, in an exhibit that includes carved cinnabar from Asia, Japanese netsuke, colorful Bakelite buttons from the 1930s, floral bouquets made of human hair placed under glass, military buttons, black glass and marquisette buttons popularized by Queen Victoria, habitat buttons made in France to preserve plant or insects under glass, and four engraved buttons taken from General George Washington’s coat, among others. The Button Museum was originally curated more than 60 years ago by Warren F. Kaynor for The Waterbury Company. The Mattatuck Museum offers additional exhibits as well. Visit www.mattmuseum.org

The Witch’s Dungeon

Today it is only open Saturday evenings by appointment Entertainment Tonight called the museum the longest running one of its type while covering its 30th anniversary in 1996. The museum was created by artistic members of the Hull family, who were able to accurately create life-size figures of classic horror movies and more. Cortlandt Hull is the force behind the museum. The museum began to get national attention along the way including form National Geographic and Ripley’s believe or not. Hollywood royalty such as Vincent Price and Mark Hamill have lent their voices to the museum’s figures. In the past, relatives of classic horror movie actors such as Sara Karloff, daughter of Boris Karloff, have visited and greeted attendees. The World’s Oldest Bowling Alley

Located in the historic Victorian home ROSELANDCOTTAGE in Woodstock the home’s bowling alley was reportedly built in 1846 as per the home’s website. Ten pin bowling became very popular in the 1840s after nine pin was banned due to its association with gambling and drinking. As per the site, “with a little Yankee ingenuity, they just added a pin to get around the law.” The bowling alley is only one fascinating aspect of the cottage The cottage is named after the favorite flower of the family who built it and is available for tours seasonally from June through mid-October.
