TRAVEL

BREWHOUSE INN & SUITES VINTAGE MEETS MODERN FOR THE BEST STAY The Brewhouse, we’ve taken the idea of a simple stay and turned it into a historic, memorable and genuine Milwaukee experience. Modern comforts. Artful décor. Unparalleled service. Thoughtful green initiatives. These aren’t extras, but simply the way we run things. All-in-all, The Brewhouse is a collection of everything that makes Milwaukee famous—including the brew. After all, what could be more Milwaukee than sleeping in a historic brewery where you’re welcomed by the stained glass visage of the patron saint of beer brewing? Prost!! Today, soaring and joyful fusions of mixed metals, well-kept copper tops and a King offering a perpetual toast to good health greet all of the Brewhouse Inn & Suites guests and visitors. Then, they made mash, then boiled, bottled and sold the brew that created the “Made in Milwaukee Blue Ribbon” experience. Explore the rich history of the iconic Pabst Brewery and the evolution into Milwaukee’s own “blue ribbon” hotel of today. We wanted to make a real investment in Milwaukee by thoughtfully developing a sustainable, green neighborhood. We’ve gone to great lengths to make sure the Brewhouse Inn and Suites is in the LEED-certified Brewery Development. From development to construction, the Brewery has achieved Platinum Certification and is on track to be one of Urban America’s premier sustainable neighborhoods. This responsibly planned gateway to Milwaukee’s great downtown offers residents and guests alike a place to work, live, learn and play. Gorman & Company has developed innovative and catalytic properties in partnership with communities across the country. While steampunk and Victorian revisionist stylings set our suites apart, modern onveniences like a full kitchen, oversized showers, and complimentary WiFi are what make our boutique hotel premier. With touches like a kitchen table repurposed from the original building and beer bubble French doors, think of it as industrial revolution meets sustainable twenty-first century. EXTENDED STAY ACCOMMODATIONS Our suites make the perfect headquarters when you’re in town for an extended stay. The suites are equipped like an upscale apartment with full kitchens, a workspace and complimentary Wi-Fi. It’ll be like working from the comfort of home, except you never have to clean and you have Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub as your downstairs. As for your backyard? Step out into the center of downtown where the convention center, area colleges, and a number of business are just a short walk away. THE NITTY GRITTY The Nitty Gritty is a restaurant and bar serving the Madison area for over 45 years. Its three locations in Madison, Middleton and Sun Prairie are Home of the Famous Gritty Burger and the Official Birthday Bar. I always tend to fall for a restaurant with nostalgia. We vistited the Nitty Gritty in Madtown over Labor Day weekend. The Nitty, has a vast tap selection with an emphasis on local breweries. Their Power Hour offers amazing specials on beers, drinks and shots. The pub food is great to satisfy your hunger and believe me come hungry. We started with the spinach and artichoke dip. As the waitress brings out our appetizer, my first thought is “this is a meal.” A huge loaf of bread holds the creamy and rich sauce with lots of chips, veggies, and bread to dip dip dip. Nitty might even do the best burgers in town, not to mention their long menu of burger choices. They even have a special burger of the day. My personal favorite is the Pretzel Bender, which comes topped with a godly slice of Wisconsin cheddar, homemade pretzel mustard, and a massive onion ring. Make sure when ordering you get an extra side of Nitty sauce. Thousand Island like but creamier and definately more tasty. Eating at the Nitty Gritty brings you back to where good times with friends and great food meet. 223 N Frances St, Madison, WI 53703 (608) 251-2521

The Plaza Hotel, a classic European boutique hotel located on Milwaukee’s historic lower east side. Brimming with character, our Art Deco walk-up hotel promises both eclectic charm and neighborhood friendliness.

A fixture on Milwaukee’s Lower East Side since the Roaring Twenties, the building was designed by architect George W. Adams and originally constructed as two buildings in 1925. The four-story Plaza is identifiable by its red brick exterior with stone trim and wrought iron details. Its historic Art Deco architecture is what first attracted the Crichton family to purchase The Plaza Hotel since 1984. They are just the second owners of the building, which has been thoughtfully renovated over the years to restore many of the stunning original architectural details while providing for the modern amenities and latest technology today’s travelers demand. The Café at the Plaza was originally a tea room where lady residents entertained guests. In 1950, the infamous lunch counter (as we know today) was installed and the Café at the Plaza was born. To this day it remains a local Milwaukee treasure. Why settle for a typical hotel room when our 1920s Art Deco-style accommodations promise your own little apartment in the city? Rooms at The Plaza include fully-equipped kitchens, small seating areas, comfortable beds, fresh linens and petite but functional 1920s-tile bathrooms. All guest rooms offer the following amenities: Free high-speed WiFi Flat screen TV iPod alarm clock with docking station Fully-equipped kitchen Keurig coffee maker and coffee, toaster Hair dryer Voicemail Free local calls The Café at the Plaza is a bustling vintage eatery and coffee shop that locals consider a Milwaukee treasure. Il Mito East is located in the same building as the Knickerbocker Hotel. Il Mito East, chef Michael Feker’s newest culinary endeavor, offers an infusion of rustic Italian tapas and flavors with chef Feker’s unique twist on fine dining. It’s about dining fine, whether you are casual, on a romantic date, a business lunch, or just out for an unparalleled experience at an unmatched and unbelievable value. When entering the restaurant we were greeted right away and was told the best server would be serving us. Every expectation of fine dining was met, starting with impeccable service. The server introduced us to different wine selections based on what we were eating and our normal flavor of choice. Ravioli di zucca di stagione hit every taste bud for this vegetarian. Homemade ravioli filled with fresh, hand-grated seasonal squash, creamy ricotta and fresh chopped aromatics in a brown butter sage glaze, topped with walnuts and Parmesan sprinkle. For our meat eating guest, the high note reached at the Braciola Di Maiale Pork rib chop with smoked apple and leek confit, served with sautéed spinach and sage linguine. The restaurants aura was warm and comforting. This is a place, where after your meal, you sit around, talk with friends and enjoy a wonderful glass of wine. THE PREPPY WAY TO STAY The Graduate is a boutique hotel located by campus right off of State Street, set along side Lake Mendota on historic Langdon Street, and around the way from Memorial Union Terrace. The hotel is nestled between the bustling shops and stops on State Street and majestic Capitol Square – the perfect spot for a campus visit, company meet up or place to pop by for a fresh pressed juice, signature brew or inspired rooftop view. As you walk into the hotel you are definately reminded of the 50’s college flavor with plaid fabrics, retro furniture and decor. Upbeat and modern, the lobby is a great place to hang and grab a quick snack. You will notice the techies on the main table adding to the charm of such a cool space. Checking in was easy breezy. The key card has old characters from different college movies and figures that adds even more charm to an already delightful place. The room is no less then to be desired. Sweet and retro with yes even more plaid and vintage fabrics bringing you back to an era that was fun and preppy. Simon and Garfunkle will be playing in ones head. Updated mod furniture anchors the room with all the amenities a good room has. A separate room with tv and pull out couch is ideal for someone with younger kids. This suite is really a cozy retreat. The rooms are ready for a night like you’ve never had before, where little moments of surprise and discovery will meet you down every corridor and around each corner. Location is key to any great hotel and the Graduate is perfectly located next to restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping and much more. So whether you’re dropping in for a show at the Overture Center, in town for a meeting, or gearing up to “Jump Around” at Camp Randall, this is a great place to start. THE BLIND Stunning panoramic views of Lake Mendota and the Capitol building paired with a tasteful and tasty menu of small plates and cocktails. From the roof you can see state street, the Capitol building and Lake Mendota. It’s beautiful. The menu is diverse and affordable. Service was friendly and accommodating. The cheesecurds and hummus were among the favorites to start things off. The portage burger with bacon brussel sprouts and duck fat fries paired with a cucumber martini can be added to my list of favorites here. of 3,000 courses. Since Missing Links changed ownership in 1995 over $500,000 was invested in the facility. Most of the investment went into revitalizing the golf course greens and tees. Tall grasses and difficult lies have been removed making the course a pleasure to play. And the silly “Cayman Ball” , promoted by Jack Nicklaus has not been used for many years The course winds through almost 15 acres of small hills and reaching ponds in the distinguished yet friendly community of Mequon, only 15 minutes north of Milwaukee. The course is challenging for the experienced golfer yet forgiving to the beginner. It takes only one and a half-hours to play nine holes, making it perfect for outings, extended lunches or after work.

Slacker Radio www.slacker.com Internet music is becoming the wave of the future. It allows the listener greater control over their music and can be listened to commercial free. Although Pandora is the most well known of the sites, there are actually quite a few options. One of these alternatives is Slacker. Slacker, like Pandora, has a formula to figure out what songs you like based on a single selection. For instance, choosing a song like Peace Train from Cat Stevens would lead Slacker to create a song list of similar artists that would play automatically. Slacker has a nice interface that is easy to navigate and has many song selections. There are two levels of subscriptions along with free listening that includes ads. The first subscription level is Slacker Radio Plus for $3.99 a month. It allows unlimited music and no ads, but no ability to choose a particular song or album. Slacker Premium Radio for $9.99 a month allows you to pick particular songs and albums along with song list creation. There are a couple of very nice features. One is that you can search for other music without disturbing the current selection. The best feature of Slacker is the ability to play specific songs and albums. This is not available on Pandora and the biggest difference between the services. Slacker streams at mp3 128 which is very listenable on pretty much all systems. There is also an app available for mobile applications and a free trial of the premium subscription at the website.

Experience the “WOW” Factor!

“Wow!” That’s what many say who try on a pair of Spira shoes for the first time. People can usually feel the difference right away thanks to Spira’s unique and patented WaveSpring® technology. The “mechanical” cushioning system can help you do more, go farther, go harder, with less stress on your feet and joints. Think of our technology as “little shock absorbers” for your body. Whether you stand, walk, jog, run, exercise at the gym or take pleasure in leisure activities, Spira can help make all more com-

fortable and enjoyable. Not all springs are created equal. Coil Spring versus WaveSpring® Of course, the idea of a spring in a shoe is not new. Wile E. Coyote had to learn the hard way because traditional coil springs do have their limitations. But our patented “crest to crest” WaveSpring® design is different; it has many little “leaf” springs combined into one larger spring, all working together in perfect harmony to create a powerful cushioning and energizing experience. This is serious equipment for your feet! Coil springs are laterally unstable. Shoes require a stable platform to function properly. However, the WaveSpring® with its unique design has significantly less lateral movement which makes it more stable. Coil springs have to be tall to provide significant deflection and energy return in a small space. Placing coil springs in a traditional shoe midsole is a challenge because space is limited. The WaveSpring® is compact and gives optimum deflection and energy return in a small space. More Benefits of Spira’s WaveSpring® Technology One size does not fit all. The WaveSpring® is engineered based upon the size of the shoe. For example, there is a different size spring for a woman who wears a size 6 shoe versus a man who wears a size 15. The springs fit just right in the appropriate sized midsole. Different spring configurations and sizes for activities. WaveSprings are specifically designed to meet the needs of higher impact activities like running, jumping, dance, aerobics, treadmills and fitness training. The springs are also designed for lower impact activities such as walking or standing. Depending on the activity and your cushioning preference, the shoe can have one, two or three WaveSprings. WaveSpring® keeps its cushioning from the first day to the last. All of us have experienced the wonderful sensation of putting on a really well cushioned pair of shoes. But how long does the feeling last? Unlike traditional EVA and foam materials for shoes, the WaveSpring® is mechanical and won’t lose its comfortable and cushioned feel over time, helping to lower the risk of injury, pain and fatigue during activities.

The price is in the $30,000 to $40,000 range depending upon options. The 2015 has an upgraded suspension and stronger overall body structure. Car and Driver ranks it number one among minivans. The base L features a 6.1-inch touch screen and Bluetooth connectivity; the rest get a seven-inch screen and Bluetooth. A rearview camera is now standard on all models, and the new Easy Speak system, amplifies the driver’s voice for the benefit of those in the second- and third-row seats. The second and third rows are very comfotable. There’s plenty of room back there, including adult-size thirdrow legroom. A 16.4-inch screen in the ceiling above the front-row seatbacks is capable of simultaneously displaying two different video inputs, and the 2015 model gains Blu-ray, HDMI, and SD card capability. A power liftgate is standard on the SE and above, while front-drive Limiteds have a power-folding feature for the third-row seats. All in all, this minivan is very roomy and enjoyable to drive. It has all the amenities to make the parents and children happy.

We designed Backblaze to be really easy to use. There is no need to select the folders and filetypes you want to backup. That means all your data will be backed up without having to do anything. We’ve all been there. The computer is not properly backed up and we have a crash. The pain and anguish of not being able to recover certain information can be debilitating. The problem with backing it up locally can be that it is linked to the virus or hardware that is causing the problem. Backblaze is a “cloud” type system that backs up continuously so you can always recover important data. Although the initial upload can take weeks, it is done in the background. And, once it is done, you can always get the data from the website. For $50 a year this is well worth the peace of mind.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 www.samsung.com $260.00 If Samsung wants to convince someone who never owned a tablet to buy one, or someone who has been using iPad and wanted to upgrade, this tablet comes as close to the better choice as ever been. The new and improved Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is a slimmer, lighter version of its predecessors. The 2560x1600 display along with the Super AMOLED technology yields an awesome picture. Compared to older Samsung tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S has a much richer, much more color saturated display. It also performs better in sunlight and other, less than perfect, conditions. This tablet is one of the thinnest and lightest tablets on the market. It is even lighter than the IPad Retina Mini and that is certainly saying a lot. In terms of weight it easily rivals 7 inch tablets. It weighs the same as the Nexus 7 (2013). Keep in mind the Nexus 7 screen is only 7 inches as opposed the Tab S 8.4 inch display. You can easily hold the tablet one handed for extended periods of time. All in all, Samsung has delivered a very nice product.

Nintendo 3DS XL - NEW!

It is basically a next-gen successor to Nintendo’s vastly successful DS handheld, with the horse-power of a console somewhere between the Gamecube and the Wii. The Nintendo 3DS XL is the king of mobile consoles. The 3DS line has an amazing selection of games for any type of person. The larger size and screen size fix some fundamental problems that the original 3DS faced. The console itself isn’t very technologically innovative. When you look at raw numbers, it can’t compete with the PS Vita or the Nvidia SHIELD, and certainly not high-end mobile phones, but it has what all of those systems lack- Fun, Fullyfeatured games. And that’s where the 3DS line succeeds.

This product has a fast processor and no lag, Google imports all the apps and allows complete integration, a terrific finger print detector and works with Last Pass and allows access to secure sites with a simple thumb print. www.samsung.com

Midwest supper clubs were born in the early 1930s mostly in rural Wisconsin, and became an enticing destination where people would gather for cocktails, supper, and entertainment. Neighborhood camaraderie and a comfortable atmosphere is a commonality all supper clubs hold to this day. While not your typical northwoods supper club, the interior focal point of Joey Gerard’s is a nod to that genre with “Montague” – a large moose head which hangs above the fireplace mantel. Montague hung in a restaurant / bar in northern Wisconsin for 40 years before Joe Bartolotta found him at the State Fair. The vibe at Joey Gerard’s embraces a casual dining experience. Combining classic supper club menu options, a great steak selection, classic cocktails and ice cream drinks make Joey Gerard’s the perfect gathering place. Take a step back in time at Joey Gerard’s! From steak and potatoes to surf and turf to traditional dishes like beef stroganoff, stuffed peppers and a Friday night fish fry, Joey Gerard’s has everyone’s favorite meal on the menu. Add in some classic cocktails and ice cream drinks, an attentive staff and a cozy, retro dining room, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a great night out! Joey Gerard’s Bar Joey Gerard’s bar features a selection of tap beers, value-oriented wine offerings, signature supper club cocktails, and a variety of classic ice cream drinks. Formed over 5,000 years ago, the Ölfus Spring is continuously replenished by a gradual filtration of rainfall and snowmelt over uninhabited and untouched lava fields. One of the world’s largest natural springs, over 900,000 cubic meters of water overflows from the Ölfus Spring into the ocean every day. This is more than twice the amount of all bottled water consumed worldwide.

LG Dishwasher Model LDF8072 www.lg.com Quiet. This is the first impression you get of this dishwasher. You barely know it is running and occasionally give it a check to make sure it is going. But, it is definitely working because the dishes come out sparkling clean. The outside, as well as the inside, is completely stainless steel with all the controls on the top to give it a very sleek, modern look. The LDF8072 has many different modes of cleaning from normal to steam clean to high temperature sanitize rinse to accommodate all needs. A very nice feature is the third shelf, which is located at the very top, for knives and other flat accessories. This is great for accessories that don’t fit well in the silverware containers. It also has two steam cycles for more intense cleaning on stubborn and hard to clean dishes. The inside layout leaves more height for taller plates and enough height on the second shelf to accommodate the other dishes. As previously mentioned, the third shelf at the very top is a great place to put knives and other cutlery. The dishwasher has been getting good reviews on the internet.

The reservoir or tank for the clean water and cleaning fluid has a real actual handle, you don’t have to awkwardly grab and carry indented sides of a plastic tank. This reservoir comes with an easy to fill top that Bissell sells “Easy to Fill” carpet shampoos and cleaners that snap in on the top to prevent waste. If you accidentally spill any carpet cleaner while pouring into the tank, there are drain holes that allow the spilled product to run on into the tank. No waste. It comes with small samples of antibacterial deep cleaning solution, and a professional deep cleaning solution. CREATING THE ULTIMATE EDGE There is a variety of different curb molds to achieve just the look you want. Decorative Concrete Borders &Walkways… The Creative Curbz Difference • Over 20 years combined experience in WI. • Last year we installed over 13 MILES of Curbing. • All we do is Landscape Curbing. • Owner on every job site. • Fully Insured (Liability/Workmen’s Comp.) • Steel Reinforcement Cable offered in every job. • Over 70 different colors/ stamping options. • Virtually maintenance free design. • Eliminates edging and trimming time. • Most installations completed in one day. • Design allows for turns, curves and contours. • Adds a great new look. • Passion for customer service. • The economical choice over traditional edging. • Custom designed on-site to your satisfaction. • Gives your yard a clean, finished look. Creating Creative Curbz: The Process 1. Sod Cutting/ Edging: The first step is a spray out with the customer. We mark the exact area you would like the edging to be installed. Ground preparation is then completed utilizing shovels, a sod cutter, or bed edger. All of this will not affect your existing landscape. We then lay down a base layer of compacted sand/gravel in necessary areas. The trench is usually cut two inches deep and approximately ten inches wide. 2. Mixing: All mixing is done at your jobsite. We mix all the necessary ingredients to ensure color consistency and long-term durability. Color and additives are added in this step. All colors are “integral” meaning they go all the way through the concrete. 3. Extrusion Process: This is the point in the process that everything begins to take place. There is a variety of different curb molds to achieve just the look you want. These are attached to the machine and produce the style of edging that the customer desires. The machine can easily handle straight lines or gentle curves. 4. Finishing/Troweling: The finishing touches are accomplished with hand tools and trowels. To control cracking caused by ground movement and cold temperatures, expansion joints are cut halfway through the curbing every one and a half to two feet. A topical spray is applied to help beautify and enhance the stamping process, then we stamp the curbing using rollers or hand stamps. 5. Sealing/Preservation The final step in the process, is to apply a clear sealer which helps to preserve the color and protect it from the sun’s UV rays. For more information visit www.getcurbz.com.
