Everywhere we look we see images, both on line and in print, that try to influence our perception of being healthy. Beautiful women with slim waists and handsome men with six-pack abs and tight jeans are what advertisers want us to aspire to when we think of good health. The images are misleading and for many, unrealistic. Over the past few decades, we have made great strides in terms of eating healthier, exercising more, and creating positive lifestyle habits. More people are enjoying the benefits of gym memberships while fewer people are smoking. Even with these powerful changes, many people still suffer from obesity and other chronic diseases that are associated with poor health choices. Being healthy involves more than just trying to emulate what is seen in photographs and print media. Losing weight and regaining your health involves making a few positive changes that turn into lifelong habits! New Year’s Resolutions normally don’t last and are often made in jest. Instead of following fad diets or making yearly resolutions, take the steps to incorporate healthier foods and habits into your daily routine.

Weight loss is only part of the equation. Good health is not just about losing weight. Weight loss is important to not only accomplish, but also to MAINTAIN. People tend to relax their efforts once they reach their weight loss goals. They tend to gain the weight back because they have not addressed the issues that led to the weight gain in the first place. If you want to regain your health, especially through weight loss, you need to correct the bad habits by replacing them with new ones. We must start with ourselves, but we need to encourage our friends and family members as well. Personally, I’ve challenged my son and son-in-law to take up a fitness routine where we can motivate each other to lose a few of those unwanted pounds. Let’s face it, we could all benefit from a lap or two around the track. Over the next few months, our goal is to make others more conscious of the foods we eat. This includes identifying a diet that can be maintained over a long period of time, as well as encourage others to exercise regularly. Above all, we want to stress both a commitment to good health and the consistency to maintain our new habits on a long term basis. Our life is a journey. I hope you have found a path that includes the healthiest of lifestyles for both you and your loved ones. Our goal is to continue to provide you with the latest information when it comes to health news, resources, and suggestions from leading health experts you can rely on to improve your health. Take the first steps on your new journey today!

TIPS TO LOSE WEIGHT JUST IN TIME FOR THE

Summer

FROM THE WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY TEAM AT NEWARK BETH ISRAEL MEDICAL CENTER

1

Stay hydrated. Drink at least 8 glasses of water and/or sugar-free drinks a day.

2

Avoid hidden calories. Beverages such as fruit juice, soda, cocktails, beer and wine often contain sugars that can sabotage an otherwise healthy diet.

Dr. Alan A. Saber

T

he Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers a wide range of minimally invasive weight loss surgery options. The Metabolic Surgery Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center offers endoscopic procedures, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, and laparoscopic revisional procedures. The program is led by Dr. Alan A. Saber and a multidisciplinary team of dietitians, primary care providers, psychiatrists and psychologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, radiologists and emergency medicine physicians, all working together to ensure a successful procedure and long-lasting results. My aim is to provide those who have been struggling to successfully lose weight with minimally invasive surgical options that will help them reach their weight loss goals and resolve many of their related health issues, such as Type 2 Diabetes,” said Dr. Saber, Director of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. “Several studies have shown that metabolic surgery can successfully resolve or improve Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, asthma, sleep apnea, and decrease heart disease risk.” Dr. Saber and Catherine Wong, MS, RD, CDN, nutritionist, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, at Newark Beth Israel offer their patients the following top-ten ways to keep the weight off after surgery.

14

www.hwfessex.com

3

Stay active. Dr. Saber and Catherine Wong recommend exercising for 30-45 minutes every day for at least 5 days a week, to keep the weight off.

4

Choose healthy cooking techniques. It’s always better to bake or broil foods rather than frying items in oils, which can add calories to your meal.

5

Practice mindful eating. If you chew your food at least 20-30 times with each bite you will eat less.

6

Write it down. Keep track of what you are eating by using a food diary. There are also many health apps available to help you keep track of your food intake, calories and activities.

7

Cut calories. Before surgery, Dr. Saber and Catherine Wong recommend that the average woman consume about 1800 calories a day and the average man consume about 2,200 calories a day to prepare for life after the procedure when calorie intake is reduced even further.

8

Be prepared. Preparing your meals ahead of time has been shown to improve portion control and help reduce calorie intake.

9

Eat your veggies. No diet is complete without a healthy dose of fruits and vegetables. They recommend filling half of your plate with vegetables and eating at least two fruits a day.

10

Be consistent. Maintaining a consistent diet and exercise plan is the most effective way to ensure a successful weight loss result.

“My aim is to provide those who have been struggling to successfully lose weight with minimally invasive surgical options...” Dr. Saber joins Newark Beth Israel from The Brooklyn Hospital Center/Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Prior to his work at Brooklyn Hospital, he was Director of Metabolic Surgery at Case Medical Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH and Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery at Michigan State University. Dr. Saber earned his medical degree, with honors, from Alexandria University School of Medicine in Alexandria, Egypt. He completed his Surgical Residency at Alexandria University School of Medicine and his General Surgery residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY. Dr. Saber’s expertise extends to 18 years of excellence in Bariatric Surgery and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery. He has performed more than 4000 minimally invasive weight loss procedures

ree Flow Chiropractic offers chiropractic care for neck pain, back pain, and many other health conditions that affect not only the musculoskeletal system but the entire body as a whole. Located in Morristown, New Jersey, Dr. Billy Stetzel and his wife Katelyn work together to carry on the family profession.

Meet Dr. Stetzel: Chiropractic Runs in the Family Dr. Billy Stetzel is a 3rd generation chiropractor. Following in his grandfather, Dr. Ed Rahuba, and parent’s, Drs. Greg and Kim Stetzel’s, footsteps, both Billy and his sister have entered the chiropractic field. Growing up, Dr. Stetzel was an all-around athlete, playing basketball, baseball, and soccer. He continued to play soccer while attending college at Sussex County Community College. Always active, he also enjoyed trail riding and hiking, which eventually led him to CrossFit. He loved the CrossFit environment so much, that he went on to receive his training certification. As an athlete and a doctor, he encourages all of his patients to explore their own interests in terms of physical activity and athletic opportunities. The Philosophy Behind Free Flow Chiropractic Dr. Stetzel offers his patients the information and care they need to make positive and sustainable changes in their health. The primary chiropractic philosophy involves embracing the fact that the body has an inherent organization and inborn intelligence that gives it the ability to maintain itself. When the brain, spinal cord, and nerves are functioning properly, the body can remain in balance resulting in good health and well-being. Chiropractors recognize that as a person develops a more coherent nervous system, they often begin to gravitate towards healthier lifestyle choices overall to support their growing vitality. Correcting Subluxation and Restoring Balance When the vertebrae shift and force the spinal column out of its natural alignment, subluxation occurs. This puts pressure on the various structures within the nervous system causing interference to the flow of information between the brain and body. At Free Flow Chiropractic we are able to find these abnormalities and correct them through the use of gentle, yet precise adjustments. This restores neurological communication, realigns the spinal column, and allows for proper form and function.

Types of Cancer Linked to Obesity “Smoking is the only health risk related to cancer that is anywhere near as dangerous as being overweight or obese.”

T

By Staff Writer

here are few things worse than being so fat that you hate looking in the mirror. Shopping for clothes that are anything besides leisure wear is painful and don’t get me started on what it’s like to get winded when you bend down to tie your shoelaces. Even if you somehow manage to find clothes that you feel slightly confident in, you’ll quickly get thrown back down to earth when you realize that you have to purchase an extra seat every time you fly. The embarrassment of having people stare at me as the airline hostess explained that I was making other passengers uncomfortable due to my size was the most horrifying thing I had ever dealt with. While it was one of those moments where I realized that the weight was too much, reading about a recent CDC study on the cancer risks for overweight and obese people was the moment I decided to change. The Moment When I Finally Said Enough Did you know that 2 out of every 3 adults in the United States is overweight or obese? While we may live in a time where people are more accepting of others, no one should be okay with tipping the scales so much that they are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than slimmer people. The everyday annoyances that come with being fat, like the inability to climb a set of stairs without losing your breath or having to shop at specialty stores for clothing are many –but what about the health risks? In the US, smoking is the only health risk related to cancer that is anywhere near as dangerous as being overweight or obese. In addition to heart disease, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes and other debilitating health conditions, cancer is a huge threat to people who are overweight and obese. In fact, CDC studies have shown that people who are overweight or obese actually make up about 40 percent of the people diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. More specifically, there are 13 different types of cancer that

overweight and obese people are more likely to be diagnosed with. That’s right, 13 different types of cancer. With numbers like that, I knew that I needed to make a change. How Can You Decrease Your Risk of Obesity-Related Cancers? With all of the different everyday challenges I faced as a “fat” person, the wake-up call that I needed to get healthy began with that CDC study. While making healthy changes won’t transform your life overnight, gradual steps can instantly improve your overall health and reduce your risk for cancer and other obesity-related health conditions. The American Diabetes Association has some great info on losing weight at a healthy pace. They found that just 150 minutes of exercise each week and a 5 to 7 percent reduction in body weight via healthy eating can help to reduce your risk of developing diabetes by 60 percent. But this doesn’t mean that you suddenly have to hit the gym 6 times a week and live off of salad. I found that tracking my steps each day with an app on my phone was a great way to get moving. Make More Healthy Choices After I started moving more, I decided to make better choices surrounding food as well. To kick off my healthy eating experiment, I started counting my calories. This helped me to quickly understand that even when I was eating healthy, I was eating portions that were way too big. By working closely with my doctor on a diet and exercise plan, I was able to improve my heart function and reduce my risk of developing those 13 types of cancer. If you are overweight or obese and the daily struggles of being fat haven’t been enough to motivate you to change, then maybe the fear of cancer will. While it’s not always easy, I can guarantee you that it’s all worth it.

By Jane Meggitt

r. Carla Dicenzo-Flynn is an Internal Medicine doctor who specializes in Metabolic Nutrition.

As a nutrition doctor, she sees patients with a multitude of nutritional disorders including but not limited to obesity, medical weight loss, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, bariatric surgery, vitamin deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, malnutrition, celiac disorder, Crohn’s disease, chronic diarrhea and many others. Her extensive training and knowledge of the nutritional needs of the body, combined with the love of fresh, high quality and homemade foods began as a child. Growing up in an Italian family in Brazil, Dr. Flynn was raised eating fresh fruits, vegetables and poultry directly from her grandparent’s small farm. Her diet became less healthy when she moved away from home. Overtime, she began to realize she was missing the fresh foods of her youth. She missed standing in the kitchen with her grandmother lovingly creating high-quality dishes made fresh from scratch that she shared with her family every Sunday. Today, Dr. Flynn remembers the lessons her grandmother taught her in that great Italian kitchen. Fresh is best and cooking with love always adds the best flavors. Along with those important lessons taught by her grandmother, Dr. Flynn has an extensive knowledge base of how nutrition and food function in the body as well as the diagnosis and treatment of nutritional disorders. Using these skills, Dr. Flynn goes through great lengths to help each patient understand how the foods they eat may be affecting their bodies. Dr. Flynn is the founder and director of METANU Center, a metabolic nutrition center in Morristown NJ. At METANU, Dr. Flynn works with each patient to develop individualized care to fit the needs and the goal of each patient. She does not believe in the one-size fits all approach. Dr. Flynn works closely with her Registered Dietitian to create meal plans, nutrition goals, and close monitoring of each patient and their specific nutrition needs. Contact METANU Center today to diagnose any nutritional problems, change your lifestyle, and improve your health and life.

Every year U.S News & World Report evaluates 4,500 hospitals and chooses it’s Top 20. These hospitals meet or exceed both industry standards as well as the expectations of the patients they serve. For the 2018-2019 year, Morristown Medical Center made the list in several different categories. It ranked in the Top 50 in the nation for Gastroenterology and GI procedures. It ranked in the Top 20 for Cardiology/heart procedures. It ranked fourth out of all New York Metro hospitals. Lastly, it was named the Number 1 hospital in New Jersey. To attain this prestigious honor, Morristown Medical Center had to continually work to maintain a level of excellence within all departments of the facility. Because of this diligence and dedication to their patients, the hospital scored in the Top 10 percent for all programs on a nationwide basis. This included many of the following areas: Heart failure, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, colon cancer, knee and hip replacement procedures, lung cancer surgery, nephrology, orthopedics, neurology, and pulmonology. The facilities medical and clinical teams, as well as their support staff, have continued to ensure that each patient receives the highest quality of medical care at all times. Several factors were taken into consideration when determining these standards of care. Re-admission rates, patient experience, quality of nursing care, risk-adjusted survival, and volume were all taken into consideration when evaluating Morristown Medical Center and whether or not it made the grade. The staff of Morristown Medical Center has risen to the challenge and proven that it meets or exceeds both customer and industry expectations on every level and it has the stamp of approval from U.S. News & World Report to prove it. 100 Madison Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960 www.atlantichealth.org

Supporting Cancer Patients in Philadelphia

C

ancer may be the one most dreaded word that could come out of the mouth of a doctor. Being diagnosed with cancer is life-altering at best, at worst, it is devastating in every possible way. In addition to being one of the deadliest diseases known to science, it can also be incredibly difficult to bear the financial burden of most cancer treatments. A diagnosis of cancer can drive a family into debt, bankruptcy, and total financial ruin. All of this, on top of the emotional strain, can be unbearable for some. Bringing Hope to Families in Philadelphia Suffering from a Cancer Diagnosis No one knows this better than the founders of Bringing Hope Home, (BHH). In the early 2000’s Paul Isenberg’s wife, Nicole was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Disease. Paul was fortunate enough to have a good job with flexible hours, but they still found it incredibly difficult to bear the financial burden. Nicole lost her fight with cancer after six grueling years. During that time their small family was helped along the way with a great deal of care and support from friends and family. Unwilling to have lost his beloved wife in vain, Paul enlisted the help of his friend Tim Sherry and they created BHH. They drew their inspiration from the many people who contributed so much during Paul and Nicole’s long battle. They forged a network that offers financial help to Families with cancer in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. BHH provides financial assistance and emotional support for Philadelphia area families. They pay utility bills, car

payments, rent or mortgage, and much more depending on the needs of the person and their family. There are no restrictions as to who may be helped outside of geography and the limitations of donor-supported funding. That is why it is so important for BHH to grow its support base- there are always more people suffering from cancer who might be helped. A Proven Model for Helping Cancer Patients BHH raises money through their school program, fund raising events, corporate sponsorships, and private donors. To date, BHH has helped more than 4,800 Families. Their average activity level ranges from 30 to 60 Families helped every month. Despite the fact that BHH has helped so many and continues to help so many more, Paul is never satisfied. At present, his goal is to grow the charity to the point where it can help at least 100 Families every month. BHH endeavors to connect the Families with their donors- to the extent the family is comfortable. Over the years, BHH has pioneered a process for delivering help to Philadelphia area Families. It has been vetted in over a decade of successful use with the ability to maximize every dollar to benefit our Families with cancer. BHH offers a ready avenue for those who wish to help and are ready to give back- as well as much needed resources to people suffering through one of the hardest blows that life can deliver. Bringing Aid to Breast Cancer Survivors Client Testimonials “The emotional and financial support I received after my diagnosis and treatment was invaluable. It is a unique facility, the only one of its kind in New Jersey.” “The Sister house is my refuge, a soft place to fall where everyone understands and loves you.” Sister2Sister is filling a gap that, to date, more traditional organizations have failed to address. Still, limited resources present a real challenge to the organization’s mission. Leading officers are looking to expand the financial assets of the network, but mission-critical technological assets are also a major focus.

A

By Maryann Smith nyone who suffers from cancer is likely to experience a range of hardships from the economic, to social, financial, and more. But if you add to the common hardships of cancer, the struggle of living as a minority, the trials of living with breast cancer can compound rapidly.

Sister2Sister, Inc., formerly Sisters Network of Central NJ, is a non-profit organization formed in January 2000 with the mission of offering critical resources to women who have survived and who are battling breast cancer. Founders Dorothy J. Reed, Pearl Grace (deceased), Lareatha Payne and Rosa Davis looked at critical demographic research and saw that while Caucasian women are more likely to develop breast cancer, African American women are 42 percent more likely to die from the disease. The marked disparity in survival rates is believed to stem from a lack of medical care, immersion in food deserts, diets high in saturated fats, and a lack of access to critical services. Sister2Sister works to close this gap. The program is supported via fund raising events like 5K runs, memorial golf tournaments, and more. The heart of Sister2Sister is their Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP). It is a unique and unrestricted assistance program through which Sister2Sister engages in its primary function. The BCAP delivers critical support services, referral services and unrestricted financial assistance to women struggling to cope with the financial challenges that arise during chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. BCAP’s services include cosmetic products, prosthetics, grocery cards, utility payments, transportation to chemotherapy treatments, and a range of logistical aid.

Techsoup has helped S2S with their inner office software with a wonderful volunteer overseeing its installation. Another volunteer updated their website, while S2S worked this year to rebrand their organization’s name. Through information technology, Sister2Sister can offer first-rate communication and information to women in a confidential manner. Their outreach in social media is mainly through Facebook, where they have a steady growing number of friends and followers. The program’s volunteers are learning to utilize this as an optimal place to position S2S for eased communications about programs and support for women battling breast cancer. While the organization continues to address issues no other concerted effort does, the leadership knows they must expand in order to reach more breast cancer survivors. Sister2Sister has a heavy fund raising schedule in 2018, and their charity events are some of the most anticipated, and best received in the region.

Size 18 to a Size 12

“Kathy changed my life!”

I

called her immediately following my doctor’s appointment. I weighed in at 199 pounds (it was really 201 but I bargained for the two pounds of clothing I was wearing!). And then the doctor read me the riot act… “Get your cholesterol down, lower your AIC, and lower your triglyceride numbers—or I am putting you on medication to do the job.” I am a therapist and have worked extensively with people who have had bariatric weight loss surgery. In a former lifetime I was a Nutri-system counselor, I have been on and off diets all my life. I knew how to lose weight, I just didn’t know how to not gain it all back again plus more. I knew this time it had to be different. I called Kathy and signed up for her Signature Lifestyle and Nutrition program. I expected weight loss, and yes, that happened. In fact, I am 31 pounds lighter in 12 weeks. My 5’ 6” self went from a size 18 (stretchy pants) to a size 12 (zippered slacks!). Kathy is so knowledgeable and understanding—she gets “it” and she got me. She provided easy instructions for what to eat and what to avoid and had faith in my ability to make this change toward health. And it happened. My energy level SOARED. I was full eating good healthy food and I had NO FOOD CRAVINGS! Not only do I PASS UP SUGAR now, I don’t even think about it! Kathy was an amazing guide through this process of transformation. Our bi-weekly coaching sessions identified some of the emotional blocks that are underneath all the weight. I am so grateful to Kathy as with her help I have reclaimed my body and my life. Months later, here I am, on my meal plan, feeling great and healthy!

I went to review my results with my doctor. She looked at my new results and said, “THIS IS REMARKABLE; how did you do it?” I told her that I worked with an amazingly gifted guide and mentor. My blood pressure dropped from 120/80 to 110/60 (which is excellent). My BMI went from 33 (which is obese) to 27.76. My weight dropped from 201 pounds to 170 and steadily I am finding the sweet spot for maintenance. (I have never been here before and it is WILDLY EXCITING!!!) My hemoglobin A1C (the marker for diabetes) dropped from 5.4% to 5.2%. My triglycerides dropped from 118 mg to 76 mg (or 64 %!!!), HDL from 59 mg to 60 mg; my VLDL cholesterol (the cholesterol associated with the development of plaque deposits on artery walls) dropped from 24mg to 15 mg. Turns out, (especially for middle aged women like myself) that people with “good” HDL cholesterol and low triglycerides may actually be at a lower risk for heart disease then people with “normal” cholesterol levels and higher levels of bad cholesterol AND THAT WOULD BE ME! Thank you Kathy for giving me my life back!!!! Kathy D’Agati is Certified Holistic Nutrition Coach and a Certified Gluten Practitioner. Her company is Back to Basic Wellness. Her programs are designed to give you the support and guidance you need to create and sustain a healthy lifestyle. She specializes in food intolerances, acid reflux, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, persistent weight gain, and autoimmune disease.

Exercising the Bacteria in Yo u r G u t By Lynn Daniels

Exercise and Your Gut Scientists from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign performed a pair of studies investi-

E

ngaging in regular, moderate exercise is good for your heart, of course, but research shows that working out can have a positive effect on the beneficial bacteria living in your gut.

There are about 100 trillion bacteria living in your digestive system, according to Harvard Medical School, known collectively as the gut microbiota or gut microbiome. Some of the 5,000 distinct bacterial strains living there are unhealthy and can cause illness. Other strains, known as probiotics, are actually good for your health.

Researchers are beginning to find out that the gut microbiota has an enormous influence on your health. Harmful bacteria can cause illness, of course, but beneficial bacteria help you digest fiber, play a role in controlling your immune system, promote brain health, lower blood sugar, and affect the health of your heart, gut and other organs. To gain these benefits, though, you need to keep the beneficial bacteria living your gut microbiome in good health. Researchers already know that you have to “feed” your bacteria with its favorite foods, such as legumes, beans and fruit that contain lots of fiber, along with yogurt, sauerkraut and other fermented foods. Feeding your bacteria will promote the growth of beneficial microbes and create a balanced microbiome. Eating unhealthy food can negatively affect your gut microbiome. Taking antibiotics, drinking alcohol cigarette, smoking, lack of sleep and other factors can also disrupt the bacteria in your digestive tract. Now research shows that exercise alone can alter the composition of the gut microbiota.

gating the role exercise plays in the health of gut bacteria, regardless of antibiotic use and other factors. In the first study, the researchers used three groups of lab mice. The first group exercised a lot and the second group didn’t exercise any more than usual. The third group of mice, specially bred in a sterile room and without any microbes in their guts, was sedentary too. The researchers then transferred transplanted fecal material from the active and sedentary mice into the guts of the sterile mice. Recipients of the exercised mice microbiota ended up having microbes that produce butyrate, a type of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) that promotes healthy intestinal cells, decreases inflammation and generates energy for the host. These mice were also more resistant to inflammatory bowel disease. In the second study, the researchers looked at the gut microbes of 18 lean and 14 obese sedentary adults before the participants entered a six-week exercise program and again afterwards. The participants then engaged in six weeks of sedentary behavior, after which the researchers looked at their gut bacteria again. The participants maintained their normal diets throughout the study. The researchers found that fecal concentrations of SCFAs, particularly butyrate, increased in the human gut as the result of exercise. Butyrate and other short chain fatty acids decreased when the human participants stopped exercising. The results of these studies, and others, show that exercise can improve the health of the microbes in your gut. To keep your digestive tract – and the rest of your body – at peak performance, exercise regularly. Source: www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/ can-gut-bacteria-improve-your-health

THE

Evolution of

Your Guide to Health and Wellness: 7 Steps to Help You Evolve Into a Healthier, Happier You ellness isn’t just a beautiful face or a strong body. It isn’t big muscles or clear skin. It is a state of well-being that is accompanied by a state of physical balance where the body functions as effectively and efficiently as possible. Your body naturally strives to remain in a constant state of balance and well-being. Through bad choices, we tend to pull our bodies out of balance even though we look healthy and physically fit. In some cases, things happen outside of our control. The demands of your job, financial restrictions, and simply a lack of motivation can cause you to become careless with your habits and behaviors. Once you begin to realize the changes that need to be made to restore your health, you need to have a guide to follow that will keep you moving forward.

Make a Commitment to Yourself

Before you start to formulate your weight loss plan and take the first steps on your journey, you need to make a commitment to yourself. Not even the best-laid plans will work if your heart isn’t in them. You must make the conscious choice that this is what you want to do and that you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Striving for good health and wellness will have its challenges and temptations. You have to decide how badly you want it and how hard you are willing to work for it.

Create Goals With Achievable Milestones

Create goals with achievable milestones. This can be walking 10,000 steps every day or counting how many days you can go without drinking coffee, soda, or alcohol. In terms of weight loss, set realistic goals. Nothing is more discouraging than setting a goal and not reaching it. Evaluate your needs and set your goals accordingly. Keep track of your goals and monitor your progress on a weekly basis. Don’t weigh yourself every day. Weight fluctuates on a daily basis and will make you crazy if you try to

26

www.hwfessex.com

Wellness gauge short-term changes. Instead, do a weekly review of your goals. This gives you some worry-free time between evaluations where you don’t have to stress so much. Stick to your goals and continue to take each step one day at a time.

Create a Diet That Fits Your Body and Your Goals

Learn as much about your body as you can. Some people thrive on a high-protein, low-carb diet, while others need just the opposite. Understand your body’s nutritional needs and plan your meals accordingly. If you need to cut back on calories to achieve your weight loss goals, choose a supplement that will support your dietary needs. Once you have your nutritional needs in place, determine how you should eat. Do you need three larger meals every day with multiple snacks? Or is it better for you to have six smaller meals throughout the day with only one or two snacks? Your lifestyle and overall goals, as well as your physical needs, will determine what type of meal schedule will work best for you.

Eliminate the Bad, Bring in the Good

Eliminating the bad involves removing more than just unhealthy foods. This means you need to eliminate negative thoughts, behaviors, and people as well. Embrace the power of positivity. Take a close look at your thoughts and behaviors. Change your “I can’ts” to “I cans”. Don’t look at things you want to do and have doubts. Accept the challenge! Step up and do what you need to do to make it happen. When it comes to the people you have in your life, don’t let another person’s negativity bring you down. If someone doesn’t have faith in you, find others who will. Create a positive support system and bring those people into your inner circle.

Increase Your Activity Levels

Many people confuse physical activity with exercise. Being active simply means to keep yourself moving. Don’t park your car close to the entrance of your destination. Park on the edge of the parking lot and walk the extra distance. When you clean your house, don’t simply go through the motions. Turn on the music and dance your house clean! When you spend time with your children, go outside. Play a game. Throw a football around. Do something fun. Go for a hike or a walk along the beach. The key is to keep moving. Don’t sit down and let life pass you

“...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” - The World Health Organization by. Make a conscious choice to live every moment.

Exercise for Strength and Endurance

Exercise for strength and endurance. It’s important to exercise at least three or four times a week for optimum heart and lung function. While you are improving your nutritional and dietary habits, you must also be willing to improve your exercise habits as well. Maintaining proper function is just as important to your overall health as your diet, how much sleep you get, and how mentally fit you are. You don’t have to be a powerlifter to be healthy. You do, however, have to maintain enough physical strength to allow you to live your life comfortably. Being physically fit means less chronic pain and the energy you need to move through life like a boss.

Embrace Yourself

Above all, embrace yourself. Learn to love yourself for who you are. Meditate and learn to relax your mind so the stresses of the day don’t overtake your mind and cause you to doubt yourself and who you are. Learn to love the person you are becoming. Honor where you’ve been by learning the lessons life has given you. Take that knowledge and continue to work toward the best you that you can be, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Your life is an adventure! Challenge accepted!

Embracing

The Health & Wellness Lifestyle iving healthy shouldn’t be based on a fad or trend, it should be an ongoing, sustainable lifestyle. Diets and weight loss groups don’t work because they mass market themselves to everyone. It becomes the latest fad or trend and then everyone wants to jump on board in the hopes it will work miracles. The problem is they don’t. People get discouraged and return to their old habits. Even though they are trying to live healthier, they often miss the mark. The stories that follow are about people who found their own healthy and sustainable lifestyle path and how they are sharing their ideas with others. Living Healthier but Missing the Mark? The fact is, even though millions of Americans are taking steps to become healthier and more fit, obesity and other chronic health conditions are still a major problem among adults and children alike. Heart disease, diabetes, and poor nutrition due to the consumption of processed/fast foods are still threatening the lives of millions of Americans. The key is learning what works for YOU. Find your perfect fitness and nutritional plan. Learn about your body and what it needs to be vibrant and healthy. Find Your Motivation For every reason you have to work out, you can find ten more to keep yourself sitting in your chair. Making excuses only makes the problem worse. Many people get discouraged because past diets didn’t work for them. Fad diets are designed for quick results, not a sustainable lifestyle. For any exercise or fitness program to be effective several things need to be in play: 1. You need to be ready to commit to being healthy 2. You need to be motivated 3. You need to know what works for you Lastly, you need to be willing to work through the roadblocks that sometimes get put in your way. If you’re ready to get healthy and create a sustainable, healthy lifestyle, then the ball is in your court. Go on the offense and take control of the situation. The only person standing in your way is you. Make a conscious choice and take your first steps on your journey to health and wellness. Following are stories of 10 individual men and women who took the challenge, said bring it on and are winning.

Who Say’s

you Can’t Go Home Again? RJ’s passion and knowledge training athletes is second to none. He has taken my son from the best RB in his league to the top running back in the state. -Rodney, Jr.-Morristown, NJ

By Melissa Shelby

J Cobbs is well known around Morristown and Cedar Knolls, New Jersey. His training center, Inception Sports Performance, is popular with children and adults alike. RJ’s love of fitness started long before he even understood the concept of exercise and “getting fit”. Working out was more of a hobby than a chore and he knew that the more he honed his skills, the better he was on the playing field. From college to the NFL, he learned he had a knack for fitness and a talent for teaching others. Both of which he continues to put to good use.

Formative Years

RJ Cobbs grew up in Morristown and Parsippany, New Jersey. Extremely active, he began to excel in sports at a very early age. After graduating from Parsippany Hills High School, RJ attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus. During his first year on the football team, he earned Rookie of the Year of the Nation.

Living the Dream

After graduating from UMass, RJ was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. After a short period of time, he was traded to the NY Giants. After experiencing a career-ending injury, RJ turned his talents toward helping others. He took his knowledge of both sports and fitness in order to take over and grow Inception Sports Performance where he re-established himself as a speed and agility coach, football specialist, and strength trainer.

Morristown Wildcats, Coach Mike Achilarre & Phillip Folmar, 2017 & 2018 Superbowl MVP.

Motivating Others

Throughout his many years of working out and helping to guide others onto the fitness path, he’s learned that one of any exercise’s main benefits is it aids in healing. He says, “Being fit is the best insurance.” His goal is to drive others into believing that the healthiest versions of themselves are the best versions. Through hard work and persistence, he hopes to help others avoid self-doubt and provide them with the motivation and support system they need to walk a healthier path. He encourages others to “Be patient and stay out of your head. People are their own biggest obstacle.” His goal as he continues to open his doors to new clients at the center is to help people lose weight, relieve stress, and perfect their athletic abilities. Building healthy habits should start at an early age and RJ Cobbs is here to provide his clients with the resources and incentives they need to do just that.

When One Door Closes, Another Opens

With his NFL career behind him, RJ opened his classes up to children and adults alike. He believes that fitness habits are best established when children are in the developmental age of skill. He also understands that, in most cases, a person’s biggest obstacle is themselves. He has found a way to use his extensive knowledge to both encourage and motivate kids and adults alike to be the very best that they can be. RJ has learned to focus his teaching skills and coaching talents into molding young athletes. He currently acts as the coach for the 6th Grade national football team in the NE region affiliated with Football University and the head defensive coach for the 9th Grade All American football team that currently practices out of Inception Sports Performance.

person who is physically and mentally fit can experience a devastating diagnosis.

Andrea Ottaiano has always lived a fitness-oriented life. From the time she was a young athlete competing in gymnastics and playing softball until graduating from New York’s Gallatin School with a Master’s degree, she lived an active lifestyle. She pursued her career in advertising and medical education and always tried to walk her talk when it came to fitness and following a healthy lifestyle. No matter how hectic her life is, she has always made personal fitness and good health a priority. Growing up, she participated in her town’s recreational programs, taught gymnastics, attended day camp, and was as active as possible. As an adult, she ran 5k, 10k, half marathon and participated in bike tour events. She enjoyed skiing, skating, sailing, softball in Central Park, NYC swimming, dancing, aerobics, kickboxing, and yoga. Like many athletic-minded women, Andrea loves competition and enjoys the feeling that comes along with being in good, physical shape. Even today, yoga, hiking, bike riding on boardwalks, trails and sprint running/walking are her favorite activities.

Physical fitness isn’t the only important health factor in Andrea’s life. She loves to cook, choosing mostly organic produce and creating recipes that provide the maximum amount of nutrients to fuel her healthy lifestyle. Growing up, Andrea lived in a typical Italian American household where cold cuts and processed meats were thought to be excellent choices for high protein meals. After her health scare, she began to research and solicit opinions from top health advocates on how to refine her eating habits. Although she was already making healthier food choices, the devastating diagnosis pushed her more firmly onto the right path. Andrea received her first cancer diagnosis in 2007 the day after her now 12-yearold son just turned one year old. Her daughter was just 2 and a half...big blurrrrrr!!!!!

32

Although she was physically fit, there was still more that she could be doing. She decided to take her fitness to the next level. This included pushing herself physically, academically and mentally to remain strong and healthy. She researched many nutrition and health coaching schools and finally enrolled in 2013 and then graduated from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in May of 2014. During her year in school, she endured 2 major lung and liver metastasis that would have put most people over the edge and ready to give up. But, she did not give up! She endured surgeries, radioactive y90 SIRT, and more chemo because she wanted to see her kids graduate elementary school at Normandy Park in Morristown, NJ,Andrea also fine-tuned her diet, eliminating the foods that weakened her body’s immune system, such as dairy and included foods and holistic practices like Reiki and acupuncture that enhanced her nutritional/ personal care intake each day. Throughout her life, living a healthy lifestyle gave her the tools she needed to beat her cancer. Now, she is using those same tools to teach others how to face cancer head-on and do what they need to do to remain as healthy and fit as possible throughout their treatment. As a health coach, she works with cancer patients, both as an advocate for wellness and as an educator to help them find new ways to fight their illness. After having beat cancer three times, Andrea Ottaiano has a full arsenal at her disposal to help her clients maintain their positive attitude and good health. She was raised to appreciate fitness and explore ways to maintain good health through a healthy lifestyle. Growing Into the Fitness Business After graduating from Manhattan College with a BS in Marketing, she continued to maintain her athletic lifestyle. She trained for marathons while orchestrating corporate events in New York City. A friend introduced her to CKO Kickboxing as a way of getting back into shape after the birth of her first child. Once she became more involved, she learned that kickboxing offered so much more than simple stress-free workouts. They were fun & exciting, and even allowed her to exceed the level of fitness she was accustomed to. Five years after being introduced to CKO Kickboxing and feeling like a million bucks, Tara and her husband, JJ, chose to open a franchise of their own. To Be Fit You Have To Live Fit Tara went from being a student-athlete to an adult who owns a thriving fitness business, and she continues to maintain her healthy, active lifestyle. For her, working out and staying active is the therapy she uses to deal with the stresses of her everyday life. Kickboxing is her stress-release that allows her to work through her frustrations. In addition to kickboxing, she runs obstacle course and road races as a way of clearing her mind and keeping her grounded, which, in turn, allows her to embrace her happiness. As a fitness instructor at CKO Kickboxing in Maplewood, New Jersey, Tara works every day to prove to her clients that living a healthy lifestyle will help to improve their mood and allow them to be more productive. Whenever she feels like things are getting to her, she just focuses on her future and kicks it up a notch.

shorthills@purebarre.com Molly D’Alessio, a New Jersey native, has lived an active lifestyle from a young age. She tried many workouts throughout the years liking mostly group fitness, but no class had everything she was looking for until she discovered Pure Barre in Westfield, New Jersey. Molly’s passion soon transcended into teaching and dreaming of someday owning a studio. She fell in love with the balance of cardio and toning, mixed with the excitement and intensity of the group workout. Quoted as saying, “No matter the mood I am in when I enter the class, I leave with a smile on my face,” Pure Barre has helped Molly remain peaceful in light of a busy schedule. While both were teaching at Pure Barre Westfield, Molly met Melanie Colman. Molly and Melanie discovered that they share passion for health and fitness, as well as a mutual drive. Armed with a Business Degree from Rutgers University, a Master’s Degree, and a Six Sigma Black Belt, Molly left her job at a major pharmaceutical company to partner with Melanie and bring the lifting, toning, and burning to Red Bank and Short Hills, New Jersey.

At Speed Weight Training Center, you can obtain your cardio through a weight-training routine. It is a fast-moving, no-rest workout that can be used by beginners to advanced weight trainers. The system will enable you to lose those unwanted pounds, gain muscle tone, and improve your overall health and appearance. Their unique approach will help you transform both body and mind. Let’s face it: most trainers just watch you exercise. If you want to achieve real, long lasting results, you must do more than exercise your body. You need to exercise your mind as well. Everything is working at extreme speed today. Speed Weight Training is no different. They have revolutionized a new way of training by getting amazing results in a shorter amount of time. Our motto is, “No Rest, Get In, Get It Done, and Get Results”, says owner and professional bodybuilding champion, Paul Davis. At Speed Weight Training, we have expert and elite trainers as well as health care nutritional advisors. We can design a program specifically to help you achieve your goal(s), says Davis. So many people experience disappointment with the gym craves of new trends. Trying to figure out what works for them eventually leads to feelings of disappointment, resulting in giving up. Here, “every person here is important to us. We offer something for every fitness level and demographic.” Paul Davis has been active in sports nearly his entire life, playing football in Cape Cod, MA as well as for Jersey City State as a running back. He began a long and distinguished carrer in law enforcement at the age of 23 as a Patrol Officer and moved up to Detective with the Robbery Squad and later to Sergeant. After being on the force for almost 10 years, Paul hadn’t worked out in a while and started to notice he was out of shape and didn’t have as much energy as he once did. He began working out again seriously at the age of 32 and was hooked for life. Within 3 years, he was ready to enter the world of competitive bodybuilding. Paul started out by winning the novice heavyweight category of the Suburban Finest competitions for 2 years. After he sensed there wasn’t much of a challenge left in that competition, he moved on and was a champion of the NJ heavyweight category. He won a total of 10 overall categories in natural competitions and was also a champion of the Masters National twice. He began to develop the Speed Weight Training technique in 2001, which incorporated the best techniques he learned from different weight trainers and bodybuilders all over the country. A few years later, he perfected the no rest concept and realized its universal benefits could be applied to a wide range of users. Because of the training program, he was in better physical condition leaving the force than when he came in. He is currently retired from law enforcement and putting his vision out there for the world to see. After a 16 year layoff and at the age of 56, Paul returned to competitive body building. Using the Speed Weight Training technique, Paul took first place in the heavy weight class and won the overall. The win entitled him to turn pro. Paul went on to win a gold medal in August, 2011 in the Police Olympics held at the Jacob Javits Center, New York City.

lub Pilates in Morristown, NJ is the place to go for all things Pilates. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, the Club has 7 signature class formats to choose from that fall into four unique levels of fitness. At the facility, you will find the EXO-Chair, Bosu Ball, springboards, TRX Suspension Trainer, and the Reformer Machine. Joe Pilates began to formulate his unique exercise movements in the early 1900s. Over the years, he began to introduce machines that would use the body’s own weight as resistance. The exercises were low-impact and didn’t place stress on the joints or internal organs. Instead, the smooth, steady movements strengthened the different muscle groups, helped to maintain flexibility and improved postural alignment. With Pilates, the emphasis is on control while helping to keep the body properly aligned. Through the use of both mat exercises and the Reformer machine, the body is brought back into balance allowing the muscles groups to gain strength and

endurance. Eight-week sessions are used to restore balance and improve abdominal endurance. The end result is maximum flexibility and better muscle control. Richard Uku opened Club Pilates in an attempt to offer Morristown residents a way to regain their health and maintain a higher level of fitness. “Fitness is for everyone” is a concept he whole-heartedly embraces. Pilates offers a unique fitness regiment that people at all fitness levels can participate in. Pilates is an ideal exercise program that allows the individual to work at their own pace and fitness level giving them an opportunity to move forward at the rate best suited for their current state of health. Club Pilates offers a variety of classes and provides newcomers with a 7-day free trial that allows them to try out a few classes and get to know what the Club is all about. The facility is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers a welcoming environment to everyone who visits. If you have questions, you can reach Club Pilates Morristown at 973-944-1187 or email Morristown@clubpilates. com.

Defeat is Not an Option

N

ardia Cunningham is a wife, mother of two, and owner of a successful fitness business known as The Bodylab, LLC. Today, she has it all; a beautiful family, a thriving business, and she is a competent athlete. But her journey came with challenges few could endure so gracefully. Nardia was born in Kingston Jamaica. She joined the Army in 2001. She was injured and received a medical discharge in 2008. Her injuries left her with permanent injuries, surgical pins in her feet, and she was diagnosed with PTSD. Despite this, Nardia began developing her own loosely organized fitness group. It all started when she decided to help her college friend to lose 90lbs. Her friend was considering surgery. Nardia understood the risks of laparoscopic surgery and dedicated herself to coaching her friend through a natural weightloss program of her own design. Her friendly intervention attracted the attention of others looking for a weight loss solution. Over time, Nardia gathered a loyal group of people who would join her and her friend in the park on a regular basis. This was the seed that would lead to a stunning transformation. Nardia returned to school, and despite her injuries, took a position as a Sheriff’s Officer in 2012. By this time she was married and had two daughters. The heavy workload, scholastic responsibilities, two pregnancies, and caring for two small children took a toll on Nardia. Working nights, missing her husband who was away on military duty, and caring for her two daughters was beginning to feel like too much. Unable to keep up with her fitness routine, and coping with the biological changes of two pregnancies, she soon found herself succumbing to depression.

“[...] working nights, coming home to a newborn and 4-year-old- I felt like a zombie. My husband was gone for weeks on military duty. Our new house was too far from my group classes. I was uninspired.” But Nardia refused to be defeated. She soon discovered that social media made it possible for her to find a new audience. She began by offering fitness advice on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. She began to feel the inspiration to be fit and help others get in shape reemerging.

Her online fitness partners helped to “keep her accountable,” as Nardia puts it- and she did the same for them. Soon, with her spirit renewed, she found the strength to go from an out of shape 186lbs to a lean and muscular 150lbs. “Family, friends, fitness, and motivating others are what keep me going. I love living and exercising to be fit, not skinny.” Clinging to her dream, Nardia used this momentum to create her business- her dream job. Today, she is a shining example of what inspiration and the refusal to give up can do. Instagram: @fitdastruggle/Facebook: @bodylabllc Website www.BodyLab.tv

vonna Campbell has always been active. Raised during a time when the street lights were your cue to come inside, she spent her time outside figure skating or playing hockey with her brother. With no video games or social media to occupy her time, she was always active, pursuing a variety of interests and athletic activities. After graduating from high school, she attended Temple University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. A Healthy Body Equals A Healthy Mind After college, Evonna married her best friend and together they had three children. Already living an active life-

style, being a mother added a whole new dimension. Healthy living took on an entirely new meaning. Exercise became a necessity, both as a stress reliever as well as a way to remain healthy and vibrant. She took on the mantra of “A healthy body equals a healthy mind.” She included her kids and began to teach them the importance of both a good diet and an active lifestyle. During the process, she made it her goal to train for and successfully complete at least a half marathon and possibly even a full marathon event.

His lifelong interest in maintaining his health and physical well-being has led him to become an award-winning inventor and fitness enthusiast. After injuring his shoulder, he began to look for ways to exercise that would not hamper his recovery, but instead, encourage strength and healing. He created the Extreme Ab and Arm Wheel to meet that need. Although he was born and raised in the United States, he finished his high school years in Europe. Playing sports and learn-

From Sales Professional to Fitness Maven For several years, Evonna has been a recognized sales professional, receiving many awards and accolades from her peers. When she worked as a National Sales Trainer for Comcast, she began to realize that her teaching efforts could serve a much better purpose. Her passion was eventually realized when her young son became ill with an upper respiratory infection. She began to realize her purpose was not teaching sales, but teaching those around her how to live a healthier more active lifestyle. After learning about how some of the toxins in her home were contributing to her son’s condition, she began to rethink many of the most common practices and products she grew up with. She researched the products she purchased and learned new, healthier ways to prepare meals and clean her home. She has taken the knowledge and experience she’s gained and has started a new journey towards better health. ing about his diet gave him a unique perspective in terms of maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine. During his college years, he began to tie the European concepts in with the Western habits. He learned to eat more complex carbohydrates and perform his workouts with fewer breaks and fewer interruptions. As he continued on his fitness journey, he looked to professionals like Water Peyton to hone is workouts. This allowed him to get the best out of each workout as he learned about his body and its reactions. After injuring his shoulder, he began to focus more on his body and how it functioned, especially during the healing process. He developed workouts that fit his needs and when he injured his shoulder, worked to adapt pieces of equipment so he could continue to move forward. The result was the Extreme Ab and Arm Wheel which offered a neutral grip system that enabled him to work his shoulders and arms with less pain and discomfort. One of the most important things he has learned and that he continually tries to stress to others is to remain focused. Put your cell phone away during workouts. Listen to your body and never work through the pain of an injury. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. There will be times when your body is tired, but listen to your mind and keep moving. Let your will be your driving force. If you want to stay fit and healthy, it’s up to you to put in the effort. Fitness is yours for the taking. You just have to put in the effort.

Embracing the Challenge As each member of the group worked toward their own fitness goals, they quickly learned that what people often lacked was a way to keep their routines fresh. One of the goals of the CrossFit 13 Stars’ staff was to introduce members to new and unique workout routines. They introduced routines that encouraged members to embrace the challenge associated with becoming fit. Consistency is key. Beginning a new diet or exercise regimen will only bring successful results if they are applied and utilized consistently. This can include maintaining a regular workout schedule or sticking with a diet plan even though it may take a while for it to start showing results. Instead of checking your weight daily, do it weekly or bi-weekly and stop stressing about it, results will not be viable overnight. CrossFit 13 Starts helps members remain both consistent and committed to their health and fitness goals.

By William Cohen

rom its inception in 2000, CrossFit has been growing and expanding by leaps and bounds. Morristown, NJ has also been experiencing a period of exceptional growth. When Brian Vagnini and his partners, Greg Dillon and Dan Moran choose to open CrossFit 13 Stars in Morristown, it was like putting a match to a flame. CrossFit’s growth combined with Morristown’s continuing expansion worked together to create a hugely successful fitness center that is now reaching out to anyone and everyone who has an interest in improving their health. Coming Together and Making A Difference Brian began really taking his fitness goals seriously during the years he attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. At practically the same time in 2000, CrossFit was being brought to life on the west coast. In 2007 when CrossFit started to make its appearance on the east coast, Brian and his girlfriend, an avid runner who ran for Rutgers University”, began to include it into the workout repertoire. Brian and his girlfriend married in 2012 and two years later joined forces with Brian’s uncle, Greg Dillon, and his college friend, Dan Moran. Together, the group formed CrossFit 13 Stars.

Helping Others Overcome Their Fitness Challenges The ultimate goal of Brian and his colleagues is to help others overcome the fitness challenges they face by teaching them new and innovative ways to train. They teach that fitness is a journey, and that it takes time and dedication to keep moving forward. It takes time and dedication to keep moving forward. Together the staff of CrossFit 13 Stars and Morristown, NJ continue to grow and expand, working together to build a healthier, more active community.
