olistic means to take a step back, and to look at the entire person/patient as they present in front of me.” Within his practice, Apple Acupuncture in Montclair, Dr. Jeremy Steiner, DAOM, LAc, treats the “whole” person. “To take a holistic approach means to ask several questions and to listen deeply to the patient. This allows me to gain more insight into why the patient is experiencing their disease. Once I formulate a proper diagnosis, I can then draw from many different modalities in order to treat in a holistic manner.”

A practitioner of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine, licensed to practice acupuncture in New Jersey and Florida, Dr. Jeremy Steiner combines experience and expertise with his belief in the human potential. While his expertise lies in Electro-Acupuncture, Dr. Steiner also employs the healing modalities of auriculotherapy, cupping, moxibustion, dietary therapy, lasers, chi gong, and meditation within his practice. The science behind pain management, as explained by Dr. Steiner, further supports acupuncture as a substantiated alternative to prescription medications. “One of the ways in which Electro-Acupuncture works is by triggering the human body to produce and release endogenous opioids, such as endorphins, which deliver a blissful euphoria and erase pain. When someone ingests a prescription pain medication, the pituitary realizes there is an excess of opioids floating around in the blood and central nervous system and down-regulates or goes to sleep, stopping the production of its own natural opioids.”

Steiner continues on to explain the differences between Electro-acupuncture and opioids in terms of withdrawal and lasting effects, “When the patient stops ingesting the prescription opioid, the withdrawal symptoms can become severe because the pituitary is no

longer producing its own opioids. In contrast to this, Electro-acupuncture is used to up-regulate the pituitary to produce and release beta endorphins which are one of the body’s natural opioids. The effects of Electro-acupuncture can last weeks or months after the treatment because the pituitary is still able to produce and release these healthy happy neurotransmitters.”

It is well known that acupuncture effectively treats pain, it is lesser known that acupuncture can be effective at addressing both physical and emotional pain. According to Dr. Steiner, “Electro-acupuncture is also very effective in the treatment of brain neurochemistry imbalances, allergies, stress, depression, anxiety and drug addiction or to improve sports performance for athletes. Acupuncture is great at providing treatment options for several difficult illnesses that western or allopathic medicine fails to effectively treat.
