The Healing Springs Journal is an independent publication committed to printing articles regarding the wellness of body, mind, spirit, and environment. It is a free publication supported by its advertisers. These advertisers must be judged on their individual merits, The Healing Springs Journal is not responsible for their claims, conditions, products, or services. Our articles reflect the opinions of their authors and not necessarily those of our publisher. We do not claim to diagnose illness, but offer an open forum on complimentary & alternative therapies. Serious ailments should be checked out by a physician as well as by the healers you feel compelled to learn more about. Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you. From my car earlier today, I saw a guy dancing to the music playing through his headphones while walking down the side of the road. It was obvious he was lost in his music and loving it. This made me smile. Yet, no one but him could hear the music, so it would have been easy to think he looked ridiculous. What struck me, and why I write about it now, is that this is an example of how it is for all of us really. Instead of music, we each have a running commentary in our head that no one else can hear; sometimes we can’t even hear it ourselves. This commentary is the basis for our movement in the world. Sometimes it’s very obvious because we can hear it say something like “I want a glass of water.” The words then create the movement of going to get a glass of water. Other times it’s silent telling us the likes of “no one makes money creating art” which creates the opposite of movement, replacing it with inactive creativity. Or a voice of doubt that ask things like... Am I good enough? Am I really able to have what I want? Does anyone care? It can also wear the guise of spirituality, such as “you need to stay positive all the time to get the life you want.” Whether it is loud, obvious or quiet, it still moves us in much the same way the music moved the kid. All my examples seem to lean on the negative side, which isn’t an accurate representation for this “voice.” The “music” also plays us into our dreams when we allow it. Just as the ongoing commentary in your head isn’t heard by the one next to you, neither do you hear what is going on inside someone else’s mind. We do not know what anyone is experiencing as they go through their life. We may love them, feel close to them, and even sometimes think we know them better than they know themselves. We still do not know what it’s like inside their head. They may be able to tell us, but words are limited by their nature and are not always the best expression of the nuances we actually feel. The person telling you about their day may have beliefs and understandings that are shaping their moment and memory, that you cannot understand or hear because it’s not a part of your experience. So, while you can, and perhaps always will, have opinions about how someone could act or respond, it is wise to simply be curious about everyone you come in contact with—those new in your life, as well as those you see every single day. Doing so, allows everyone the space to also be curious about his or her own self when around you, rather than following a prescribed way of being. The more this happens, you in turn will be curious about yourself and may find new and interesting things that are truly authentic. Get so busy enjoying Life you get lost in the movement—just like the kid dancing, while allowing others to do the same. In my early life, I had a friend that asked me what my motives were. With hindsight, I know he was asking me for his own benefit. Yet, it set me up to examine my reasons for doing things, which was my first experience with being curious about myself. It may be worth noting he was a boyfriend. Like it or not, they do have more impact, hence why I was inclined to listen to his question and take it to heart. Now, I’m thankful for its impetus. Often we are told what to do or how to behave. As beings that want to belong, we follow the ways of others in hopes of finding our place. This isn’t always our family of origin, as we can leave them in search of somewhere more “us.” Yet, the more we fit into a group, the less likely we will look at our own reasons for following their ideas. As a way to of examining your inner commentary and become curious about yourself, I suggest looking at the motives for your actions. Don’t judge the answers, just ask yourself honestly ‘why am I doing this?’ If the answer is ‘I have no idea,’ sit with that. Maybe contemplate why you would do something for no reason. If the answer is one you don’t like, such as ‘because I have to,’ ask yourself if that is true. Do you really have to do it, or do you prefer doing it over the outcome of not doing it? With each honest inquiry and answer, you clear out the commentary running your show. By purifying the ‘noise’ that interprets your experience of life, you will touch the most honest you and life will respond in kind. In April 2002, we published the first issue of The Healing Springs Journal. That is 17 years of sharing articles that allow you to make empowered lifestyle decisions in relation to the wellness of your mind, body, spirit and environment. By offering such a resource, we are creating life-sustaining choices that have a rippling effect on the entire world. You, as the reader, have impact on all that you touch. Just like the kid with headphones, it’s easy to get so caught up in our own experience that we miss how interrelated we all are. Your kindness to a stranger, say, may make that person smile and then go home and notice something nice about their son, shifting the energy of the family. This is a trite example, yet you get the picture. One way in which you have influence in regards to this publication is by supporting the advertisers you see in these pages. Doing so is a win/win/win; as you help yourself, the practitioner, as well as The Healing Springs Journal. So, please do support the advertisers along your path. We are all in it together. I am thankful to have opened many doors along our 17-year journey. May you enjoy it too. photo by Deborah Neary

Michael Wayne’s New Documentary, “On the Path to Strawberry Fields,” is Premiering Soon When Michael Wayne, Saratoga Springs based acupuncturist and member of the Deepak Chopra founded group Evolutionary Leaders, set out to interview 24 distinguished luminaries from all walks of life, he knew he would be bringing together sagelike wisdom to tell the story of the positive movement that is happening in countries all around the world. It is a movement towards a new type of paradigm, that of an evolved open culture, one that will bring forth a more holistic, sustainable and enlightened society. The final culmination of those interviews is the film “On the Path to Strawberry Fields,” a feature-length documentary. It is divided into eight chapters that progressively move the story along, from the political, to the personal, to the world at large. As you watch the ?lm, you start to understand what prompts those in power to promote their own agenda over the public good, and then you learn that this same force is in each and every one of us. From there you learn that what matters most is a life of meaning, and living a life of meaning leads to an awakening and an evolution of consciousness. As more people evolve, so does culture, and ultimately this leads to a movement towards a new paradigm, that of an evolved open culture. And this movement now has the potential to create the greatest nonviolent revolution in the history of the world. And “On the Path to Strawberry Fields" urges you to be part of it, to help create the world our hearts know is possible. “On the Path to Strawberry Fields" will be launched online, and will be available for a limited time to be viewed for free. If you want to be kept informed of when it is ready to be seen, email Michael Wayne at mwayne2@mac.com to be put on his email list.

BioMorphic Geometry: The New Science of Healing by Sue H. Singleton, Medical Intuitive ioMorphic Geometry (BMG) is fifth-dimensional geometry: geometric and mathematical formulas and algorithms that create energy perceivable by the human body-mind, as well as animals and plants. It can also influence all substances (solids, liquids and gases).

B

BMG is a ground-breaking science and technology discovered and developed by Aaron and Sue Singleton, which is based on the subtle energy principles of creating resonant frequencies and algorithms through form, space, numbers and exact geometric proportion. Their free-form geometry arranges key geometric components (including radii, diameters, arcs, chords, tangents, angles, triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, sine waves, symbols and numbers) in very specific placements and proximity to each other. Each unique BMG design thus generates an energy field for a very specific use. The Singletons are renowned medical intuitives, visionaries, inventors, intuitive healers and authors, and Co-Founders of The Way To Balance, LLC Center for Advanced Healing and Training. The science of Biomorphic Geometry — and the numerous specific BMG Designs that the Singletons have created — enable a person to experience a shift within his or her conscious mind, unconscious mind, and body. This is because our human bodies, all the way down to the level of our DNA, can “read” and respond to the energy frequencies created by the Biomorphic Geometry (BMG) Design Cards and Algorithms.

Each unique BMG Design Card is developed to: • Create a resonating morphic field that identifies imbalances in your DNA, brain, body and bioplasmic field (BPF)*, • Provide a numeric and geometric algorithm to “remind” and “entrain” the brain, body and BPF to the desired state, and • Create an opportunity for you to correct and release the imbalances For example, if you carry interference or a blockage to being at peace, the “I Am Willing To Be At Peace Within” card will draw your attention (unconsciously or consciously) to the area of interference or trauma, The BMG “I Am and then proceeds to help you Willing To Be At acknowledge and release the Peace Within” design. Not to scale. blockages.

A BioMorphic Geometry field is comparable to a radio wave that carries information. The frequencies of the fields are created by patterns, shapes, numbers, etc. and their relationship to each other. BMG Design Cards have broad applications in the fields of psychology, psychotherapy, bodywork, energy healing, hypnotherapy, guided imagery, dowsing, kinesiology, intuitive development, and much more. *NOTE: the bioplasmic field is a morphogenetic field that surrounds the body. It is a very organized subset of the auric field, and contains data, programs and instructions related to the body.

Why is it called BioMorphic Geometry? Bio, as in Biology: Of, relating to, caused by, or affecting life or living organisms. Morphic: Able to transform or to be transformed completely in appearance or character. Morphic also refers to morphic resonance, the concept that through a telepathic effect (morphic field), information can be transferred to an organism through a sympathetic vibration. Geometry: The mathematics of the properties, measurements, and relationships of numbers, points, lines, angles, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional representations.

Thus, BioMorphic Geometry uses the frequencies of sets of shapes, forms and numeric algorithms to create unique morphic fields that initiate transformational change within living organisms. At this point, there are dozens of BMG designs for various health and spiritual growth applications, including T“Happy”—The EMF shirts, and Access Your Divine Eliminator Pad. Not to Blueprint with Ease and Grace – Sets 1 scale and 2—for helping remove spiritualemotional blockages and transmuting critical life issues, in order to move forward. more easily in our personal, professional and spiritual development. Other designs include tools for clearing EMF (electro-magnetic fields) from Wi-Fi, electronics and cell phones, helping clear chemical and food sensitivities, and much more.

How Does BMG Work? The morphic field created by each design or card actually “lights up” unconscious and conscious areas within that prevent us from experiencing that state of being, or where you are holding on to that issue or concern. It is not important that you feel, see or “know” anything at all when using the cards. The body, unconscious or conscious mind, DNA and bioplasmic field all read the resonating biomorphic field emitted by the cards. The frequencies emitted by the cards allow for the shift to take place

“The majority of users begin to feel more relaxed, calmer, and a sense of relief within a short time of initiating the use of the cards.” by your simple willingness. Hence, before beginning, it can help to relax and let go, offer a brief prayer or meditate about your willingness to resolve imbalances. The majority of users begin to feel more relaxed, calmer, and a sense of relief within a short time of initiating the use of the cards. For example, you may experience sensations or energy movement to the heart and chest when using the I Embrace Joy card, showing where your body is inhibited from fully experiencing Joy. If I Surrender Judgment Of Myself And Others draws your attention to your lower pelvic abdomen, this is where your blockages to freedom from judgment are held. If your attention is drawn to the head and brain, it may be highlighting areas of mental, emotional traumas, attitudes and belief systems. The dimensions of each design are critical to the accuracy of the BMG cards and their ability to influence the body, brain, DNA and bioplasmic field. Therefore, some designs do not completely fill the card space.

Bring in this ad and receive 1 0 % o f f full-price merchandise. by Tara Ellsworth id you know that humans have three paths for learning: the eyes for visual senses, the auditory system to hear sound, and kinesthetic senses to gain an awareness of body and movement? And dancers use all three pathways while learning new steps or practicing for an upcoming occasion. The biggest part is the kinesthetic input you get from the sharing of energy, the focus, the movement and the music. Ballroom dancing is especially helpful for people who do not read body language well. Learning to lead or follow by picking up cues from their dance partner helps them become more adept at recognizing body language, even outside the dance environment.

Health D Benefits of Dancing

When we dance, we allow our bodies to “shake off” any stagnation or blocked energy. And the excitement and positive emotions experienced can help facilitate the process of our body coming to its natural balance. Ballroom dancing, especially, is based on smooth and flowing movement and techniques that focus on the correct positioning and alignment of the body. The smooth division of ballroom dances can be a great form of exercise for anyone requiring a more gentle approach to physical activity. Dancing has also been proven to improve mobility, memory, balance and coordination among other benefits. Need a way to forget about the stress of everyday life? Try dancing! While you are dancing you have to be in the present because if you are thinking about something else or a mistake you have previously made, you’re likely to get off step and continue to make mistakes. If you’re too busy thinking about what comes next or what you need to do when you get home, you will struggle to execute your moves. Many of us are more at home in our reflective and feeling side. We are the empaths, the contemplatives, the “large picture” people. We crave quiet and space to think and feel into things. Life demands that we be active and deal with things but we do this somethimes grudgingly and want to get back to our quiet space as soon as possible. I would say that if by nature we enjoy and feel comfortable both doing and being, then we are the lucky ones.Because a good life requires that both actively engage, and, feel comfortable stepping back and referencing our inner selves i.e. our values, priorities, that which makes us unique, our heart/souls, our intuition and our creativity. A good life also requires that we embrace the fact that we live in a physical reality and have physical bodies. We live on a planet that challenges us in very physical ways. We live in realities that demand our active attention and effortful engagement if we are to negotiate them successfully. There is no judgement on one way of being vs the other although some of us get caught up in defending one way as superior to the other, especially when we find ourselves in conflict with others whose default mode is different from ours. Both ways are important. We are larger than our physical selves. We are spiritual beings living a very physical existence. Embodied we are and fully accepting of our embodiment we need to be if we are to be succesful vehicles for soul. We are blessed when we know how to be in the flow. And we need the structure of focused attention to manifest our soul’s intent in the reality. Many of us find ourselves with parents, siblings, close frinds and life partners whose sweet spot seems diametrically opposed to ours. We tangle over what’s important. We argue about priorities. We experience exasperation with the other’s approach. We struggle to get our needs met: to be active or to be contemplative

.What if we could appreciate the strengths and quality of energy the other brings to the relationship and to a shared life? What if, in full respect for our preferred way we could say: “I need move so I’m going to the gym.”. What if the other could say: “I want to finish my book, you go ahead and we’ll catch up with each other later.”. What if one could say: I love how you support me to finish projects and push me to exercise. I feel better and have more confidence as a result.”. Or, “I love how you take time to really listen to me. It calms me down and helps me know myself better.” Our sweet spots, our preferred ways of being are gifts to be shared with love and respect. Our human reality is a challenging one. We all have strengths to bring to the challenges. All ways are needed to create the way moving forward. Our Angel can help if we ask. Sometimes, they help because of a prior agreement before we get to Earth, however, you should respectfully request what it is you wish for. Angels are fascinating spirit creatures that vibrate on a higher level. Everything in the Universe is vibrating and made up of energy. One of our goals here on earth is to raise our own vibration and learn important lessons on our life path. Each Angel has a specific color, crystal, musical note as well as, certain qualities that we can use to focus on what we want to manifest. On the other side, Angels communicate by singing. It is not quite the same as what we are used to here on Earth. Their voices lift the spirit and are so heartbreakingly beautiful that once you have heard this you will never forget. I was blessed to hear this during a Life Between Lives regression which I wrote about in an earlier edition a few years ago. Angels love us unconditionally. They are also able to instantly work with you once you ask. They are Beings of Light and Spirit, so they are able to work with unlimited numbers of people at the same time. Perhaps you find this concept difficult to imagine. Just know that it is possible. You do not have to be religious or part of a religion to work with them. If you haven’t already connected here is a short meditation to help you open that channel. Close your eyes, place your thumb and forefinger together to alert your inner self that it is time to meditate. Breathing slowly, deeply calm yourself and get out of your busy “monkey brain”. Focus on the question of who is my Angel? Sit quietly and a name should pop into your head. This could be an Archangel or an everyday Angel. You can keep focusing on the Angel and perhaps the Angel will gift you with something and may also have something to say. When

If the gift is available in our world, purchase it as you are able and place on your altar or some place that is of significance to you. Place the saying there also and ask, if you don’t understand, for clarification. You can simply close your eyes and ask anytime. Placing these things where you can see them will help you to keep the connection and memory. Angels can also send Reiki. When I am working with someone, I always send Reiki to their “Team” to be disbursed as needed. I also send Reiki on a continuous flow until the next time. Your Angel is a gift to you in this lifetime. In my experience, that Angel has worked with you over many lifetimes. I am so grateful for this wonderful gift.

If you find this as fascinating as I do, there is a plethora of information on the internet and in books. There you can find qualities, colors etc. Enjoy. Hypnosis for Tinnitus by George Guarino,CH

Did you know that hypnosis can be a powerful tool to help Tinnitus sufferers?

T

innitus often refers to sounds like ringing in the ears, buzzing, humming, hissing, or throbbing. The sounds can be rather constant or a person might only notice them now and then. These sounds can be heard in the head or ears and hold the attention of the sufferer beyond a reasonable degree. We all hear sounds around us or in our heads that we don’t necessarily pay attention to. These sounds don’t bother us and they

18

Healing Springs I #102 I Spring ‘19

actually give us a grounded feeling. Being in total silence is rather unusual and can be disorienting. Only a doctor can diagnose a condition as being tinnitus and rule out other serious conditions. There are three types of tinnitus. 1. Objective – The body is producing the sound, which could be heard if you put a microphone inside the ear. It’s a real sound and not one they’re imagining. 2. Subjective – This sound is being produced by the client’s brain, usually as a result of hearing loss, and you wouldn’t be able to hear it or record the sound with a mic. 3. Pulsatile – This is a rare type of objective tinnitus where the client tunes in to their own heartbeat. Studies show that some form of tinnitus effects about 10-15% of the US population to some extent. That’s a lot of people, perhaps as many as 32 million Americans. The causes of tinnitus can be linked to a number of factors like hearing loss caused by loud explosions, noisy construction sites and over exposure to constant loud music. Diabetes, thyroid problems and emotional issues are also factors. It’s also sited that tinnitus could be the product of Meniere’s disease, a longterm condition that affects balance and the inner ear. Certain medications such as aspirin, antibiotics and chemotherapy have also been linked.

How can hypnosis help and why is it so effective? First it can be used to help remove or even eliminate the sound

and second it can help change how the client relates to the sound. As was stated before, inner sounds are not unusual. In many ways it’s how the client relates to the sound that effects their quality of life. If someone moved into a home right next to a busy highway the traffic sound would initially be very noticeable and possibly distracting. Once that same person lives there for a while it would be hardly noticeable until it was pointed out. In fact the sound may become soothing and calming as it lets them know that everything is safe and they’re home. Did the sound go away or did the receiver simply change their focus of attention. Why might you like to stay in this home and feel comfortable? As the hypnotist begins to connect with the clients’ other-thatconscious mind there are a variety of tools that can be used to address the discomfort of tinnitus. Dynamic mental imagery is an initial approach where the hypnotist suggests an interactive guided journey that leads the client to discover symbols that can be used to resolve the discomfort and even eliminate the cause of the problem. Another powerful approach is to condition in systems to dial down the volume of the sound and/or the reception of it. One of the most powerful and most direct approaches is to connect directly with the client’s subconscious mind and negotiate a resolution that will be carried out internally beyond the conscious awareness of the client. A qualified hypnotist will be familiar with a variety of tools to help the client change in relation to the tinnitus so that whether the symptoms are totally gone or significantly managed, the result will be a sense of freedom and control. All you, the client, will have to do, is to focus on the instructions of the hypnotist and participate without trying to do anything, nor not try to do anything. The client’s job is to notice the changes and be honest and open to the possibilities available to them. If you would like to learn more about how hypnosis can help please contact a professional certified hypnotist. George Guarino, CH,CI has offices in Clifton Park, Delmar and Albany. Easing Our Bodies and Brains from Stress by Sarah LoBisco, ND, IFMCP tress can cause a wide range of bodily symptoms and bring about a loss of memory that is so imperative for festivity planning. (source, source, source, source, source)

S

A recent article reviewed the brain as the central organ for stress and adaption. It explores how prenatal stress and genetics, environmental triggers, and physiology all interact to create the behavioral and physiological responses to the immediate, chronic, real, or perceived stressor. For those interested in more of the science, it is worth a read for an overview of the neurobiological response and ways to mitigate it with lifestyle. The authors state in their conclusion a very straight-forward selfcare approach that can help the body and brain adjust more effectively: From the standpoint of the individual, a major goal should be to try to improve sleep quality and quantity, improve social support and promote a positive outlook on life, maintain a healthy diet, avoid smoking and have regular moderate physical activity. Concerning physical activity, it is not necessary to become an extreme athlete, and moderate physical activity has benefits for the brain and the body. Social Connections for Better Health Although many may believe diet and exercise are the most paramount, relationships are the key to overall wellness. In fact, social connections are one of the major factors in determining physical health outcomes! This means that those who have the “discipline” to follow their food rules and fitness goals throughout the season may find they suffer more than others who can “let loose” and enjoy loved ones company. I’m also aware that it is important to consider that during this politically heated and polarizing time, social gatherings could pose even more challenges. (source, source, source, source) For this reason, you may want to skim through some articles, including my latest blogs, on tips for supporting healthy relationships and navigating through feelings of rejection The Sweetest Smells of Spring for a Calm Brain: Essential Oils I have previously explored in this journal how essential oils can modulate the stress response and calm our mind-body in many articles. Donkey? by Margaret Winslow An excerpt from “Smart Ass: How a Donkey Challenged Me to Accept His True Nature & Rediscover My Own.”

I

could be astride a rhino or giraffe for all the baffled stares I receive as I ride my donkey down the busy road in the suburbs of Rockland County, New York. Commuters wrench around in their seats and slam on their brakes; teenagers honk and holler. Few in the lower Hudson valley have ever seen a donkey, outside of Shrek’s sidekick and miniatures at the local petting zoo. And Caleb is no ordinary specimen. Pure white, he stands over a foot taller than the average donkey; even his ears are exceptionally long for his species. His shaggy coat completes the picture. According to small children we meet at horse shows and religious pageants, he looks like a giant Easter Bunny. The question I invariably get from young and old alike is “What kind of horse is that?” Followed by a confused expression when I reply, “He’s not a horse; he’s a donkey.” The further question — “Why would you ever get one of those??” — is loud and clear, if often unspoken. Good question. As a geologist and a professor at an urban university, I found myself at a crossroads at the start of the new millennium. After thirty years of fieldwork in South America, Alaska, and the Caribbean, numerous back injuries had taken their toll. A heavy teaching schedule and administrative duties had all but doomed any opportunities to pursue new challenges in faraway places. With my oceanographer husband away at sea for months at a time and the prospect of starting a family no longer an option, I was looking for the perfect animal companion to help navigate the next phase of my life. Most people would choose a cat or dog. I chose a donkey. I encountered donkeys for the first time in the Dominican Republic. One day during the winter of 2001, as my geology students and I collected rock samples from a river-bed, a long string of donkeys zigzagged down the steep canyon wall to join us. Each donkey carried one or two small children nestled among empty water cans. The donkeys wore no bridles or reins, so they must have known the route by heart. The kids laughed and shouted to each other as if they were perched on dusty carousel ponies, secure on their sure-footed, slow-moving mounts. Just upstream from where we were working, the children filled the water cans while their faithful companions waited in the deep shade,

22

snuffling greetings and nuzzling their long-eared comrades. Here I witnessed another side to their hardworking lives. Like the children, the untethered donkeys played their own versions of tag and hide-and-seek, chasing each other around trees and in and out of the river. I was enchanted, especially by their forbearance and playfulness in the face of an indifferent, even harsh, environment. At the same time, watching them made me smile. I thought that these homely cousins of horses resembled ponies — that is, ponies drawn by an enthusiastic child with a strong streak of whimsy: with the ears of a rabbit, the tail of a witch’s broomstick, the stand-up mane of a punk rocker. At that moment, a long-forgotten childhood memory sprang to mind. Every Christmas, starting at age five, I had pestered my parents to buy me the “Genuine Mexican Burro” that was advertised in the Sears catalog. The brown-and-white drawing featured a small shaggy pony-size animal with rabbit ears. The first time I turned to the page and saw the burro’s huge dark eyes gazing shyly toward the viewer, I was mesmerized. I felt an intense yearning that was impossible to describe. For several years I begged my parents to get me this donkey until, finally, under the tree one Christmas morning, I found a large gray stuffed donkey. “Francis” stood watch over my dreams for years to come.

But that only partly explains why I became the owner — or should I say unwitting wrangler and straight man — of a sevenhundred-pound donkey. When I returned home from the field in the spring of 2001, I found several donkey-and-mule organizations and magazines. According to the rapidly growing pile of books and articles I acquired, donkeys were steadfast and safe to ride. But other adjectives that experts used to describe these unshowy animals — affectionate, playful, smart, undervalued — struck a chord in me. With rose-colored glasses firmly in place, I convinced myself that the side of me that had always felt underestimated as a woman in a largely male profession — the outwardly docile but tenacious striver — would resonate with a donkey’s spirit. In late August 2001, I came across a small ad in the American Donkey and Mule Society’s magazine, The Brayer, for a “large white saddle donkey.” I had no idea that a young, untrained donkey named Caleb would upend so many of my assumptions about life. Or that he would challenge me to accept his true nature — and help me rediscover my own. Margaret Winslow is the author of Smart Ass and a field geologist with more than thirty years’ experience in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. She lives in Piermont, New York and Caleb the donkey boards nearby with fifty horses and ponies. Find out more about her work at margaretwinslow.com. Excerpted from the book Smart Ass. Roots, Gracefulness and Moving into the Light: The Wood Movement of the Traditional Chinese Five “Elements” by Christopher Reilly o you remember what it feels like the first time you hear a robin’s song heralding a newborn spring? Or when the first blades of green grass start erupting from the newly thawed ground after a long and cold winter? Maybe you feel it as a rising sense of expansion in your chest, or deep breaths just coming a little easier. Maybe it’s a lightening of your step or of your spirit. However your experience may be, this is a beautiful moment to participate in, and represents the rising of the Wood Movement (often mistranslated as wood “element”) that occurs in Spring.

Lessons of the Forest

We so often think of wood in terms of our wooden desk, bookshelves or walking stick. The hard and dense material that we use in construction—this is dead wood. To capture the traditional view of the Wood Movement, we have to engage with living wood; with the metaphor of growing and thriving plant life. This movement roots itself in earth and is powerfully grounding (yin aspect). This movement also grows naturally and powerfully up towards the light and expansion (yang aspect), and it does these two things in equal and balanced measure. The upward growth is an experience of movement towards the heavens that can only occur in a consistent and sustained way, through howling winds and driving storms because its strong rooting keeps it connected to the nourishment and stability of earth. It is the suppleness and flexibility of bamboo swaying in the wind, as well as the strength of weeds pushing through cracks in the concrete blocks of a sidewalk. It is the power and strength of dynamically responsive growth out into the world.

Lessons of the Body The wood element in the human being is strongly associated with smooth movement, expansion and grounding on multiple levels. At the level of our biology, this includes progression of the monthly menstrual cycle and the daily sleep/wake cycle. The movement of our digestive tract and circulation, as well as the transition between tension and relaxation in our muscles are all linked with Wood. If the Wood Movement is inflexible, we can get neck and shoulder tension from tight muscles, or painful cramps and constipation in our digestive tract. If it is not rooted well enough and is ungrounded, there can be headaches or dizziness, and eventually high blood pressure.

Lessons of the Spirit At our intellectual and emotional levels of being, the Wood Movement embodies the qualities of flexibility, responsiveness, grounding, and growth. It is perfectly natural to feel anger or frustration if someone has just cut you off in traffic. Moving from one emotion to another in response to what is happening in our lives is normal and healthy. Still feeling angry 20 minutes later when the situation is long past is when problems can arise. If we lose the freedom to move and progress from one emotion to another in timing with our life, we lose our ability to perceive and live freely in the present moment because we are too preoccupied with those patterns of thought or emotion that have become stuck. This is wood in its stagnant state.

Program includes testing and consultation with Physician and Geneticist to interpret results and provide guidance on optimizing your genetic results through nutrition, lifestyle and targeted supplementation.

Consider a vine that meets an obstacle on its path. Is it likely that the vine’s primary meditation is on the obstacle, focusing or obsessing over it? The vine simply grows around the obstacle so that it can continue to reach towards the sun. The primary meditation of the vine focuses on the light rather than the obstacle, and this is one lesson that can be taken from the Wood Movement. Shifting our own wood movement may begin with a simple, but often difficult, shift in the content of our focus. Once mastered inwardly, the Wood Movement can manifest itself externally with the powerful support, strength and capability we can share with others as a result of, and a part of, our own growth and expansion. A concept similar to our ideas of the power embodied in true kindness and compassion, leadership, social work and charity—movements toward the light. Lessons of the Ages The Wood Movement is the last of the Five Movements in this series of articles on the Wu Xing, or “Five Elements/ Movements” of traditional Chinese thought. They are often misunderstood, since many translations from Chinese to English are hindered either by the language barrier or depth of comprehension. We are called to translate these insights into those forms of thought that are immediately and presently relevant and true to our own lives here, today. These articles have been my own little manifestation of moving forward and up into the light and out into the world of Upstate New York culture and thinking, while still being grounded in the deeper truths of the Chinese tradition and its frame of reference. I hope that they can facilitate freedom and growth for you who have read them, and wish you all the fortune and love in the world to deepen your roots, broaden your branches and embrace the dance of life.
