Page | 2 Corona virus and how we can help our members The important information to remember is that we are all in this together! If you do not understand what’s going on or want to discuss this further, you can either talk to your Keyworker or Tricia our Community Organiser about the virus. Following the instructions from the government on social/physical distancing we have had to close our day services and face to face support in the community, adapting our services to support our members and their families remotely. Within days of the government request Liam Jackson, one of our Keyworkers set up our radio show www.hsradio.co.uk with the aim to replicate, as far as possible, a day in the life of Headway SELNWK. The station is live and interactive with requests for songs, quizzes, interviews and special guests. We are supporting members through welfare checks over the phone, facetime sessions and via email. Working closely with Tutors and other organisations we hope to further develop our offering over the coming weeks and months. We will update you on these services via the newsletter which we have created to keep you informed and involved. Government guidance changes so keep updated here https://www.gov.uk/government/news/coronavirus-update There is a lot of information and advice on how to keep safe some of which is captured on the infographic below. Please keep yourself safe by remaining indoors (you can spend time in your garden) unless you absolutely have to go out and only for shopping, health appointments and exercise. If you fall under the “at risk” category (you should have already been informed of this already) you should shield yourself completely for 12 weeks not going out at all. Should you

Over 100 people tuned in on the first day of the launch on Monday 23 March. Liam’s already got special guests lined up for the next three weeks. He’s really keen that as many people as possible get involved with the new venture – members, carers, families, staff, tutors and volunteers. “It’s your radio station”, he says. “Call me, text me, message me, email me. If you ask me to play a song, I guarantee you won’t have long to wait before I broadcast it!” Listen Now To listen to the station type in http://www.hsradio.co.uk into your search bar or just click on the link at www.hsradio.co.uk Email us at radio@headwayselnwk.co.uk Call or text: 07817951123 Daily Programme Mon/Weds/Thurs and Fri 9am-4pm 9 – 10 Communication time. Tell us how you’re coping We’d really like to know how you’re managing in lockdown. Send us your top tips for how you’re getting through the day - and anything new you’ve discovered that you enjoy since you’ve been stuck indoors. Painting, planting, Netflix bingeing? We are sure there are lots of ideas even things like tidying a room count. And if you’ve got a photo you could send it, so we can all see so, much the better! Email us at jengillard@headwayselnwk.co.uk

Volunteer Profile – Sally Miller Coffee or Tea? For each issue we’ll be asking someone to answer the same questions, but the answers might surprise you! First up is Sally who’s a volunteer with Sue on Thursdays down in Deptford. Cats or dogs? I’ve got two cats so think it has to be cats. Samson is black and white and huge. Delilah is a tabby. Being cats their lives haven’t changed much under lockdown. Eat, sleep, meow, repeat.

Fish and chip or roast dinner? Got to be a roast. Beef, Yorkshire puds, gravy, horseradish, the works.

Page | 6 X Box or X Men? Love a good sci-fi action film and I wouldn’t know one end of an X Box from another. Shopping or sport? Definitely sport. Could play tennis every day if my knees allowed (and we weren’t on lockdown!) iPhone or Android? Android. Does all the things an iPhone does but cheaper. Coffee or Tea? Hmmm. Tough one but think tea wins. Though I’m really bad at leaving half-drunk mugs around. Early bird or night owl? Definitely not a night owl. Can’t stay awake much past 11. Bruce Springsteen or Beyoncé? Baby I was born to run. Word Game Try and find as many words of 3 letters or more using the letters of the following word – each letter of the word can only be used once in each word. (e.g. words from PEOPLE could include peep, pope, lop) The word this week is ANTICIPATE. Email your list to jengillard@headwayselnwk.co.uk by 17 April and we will publish who found the most words, who found the longest word – the most common word found, and the longest word found. Hi there! My name is Tricia and I am your Community Organiser. I joined Headway SELNWK on the 01 February 2020 and feel like I have worked here for years! Page | 7 Budgets and Community Development. Joining Headway SELNWK was my dream job as it is local to where I live, and it allows me to use all the skills, knowledge, experience and contacts I have built up over the years. I would like to see our members and their families have a greater input into the planning and delivery of Headway SELNWK and want to be instrumental in making that happen! Currently I am working remotely from home as is the rest of the team. I am in the shielding phase of the Virus due to medical conditions in my family. I am very lucky as I have a front and back garden, albeit small, so I am filling my spare time with tidying them up and have started doing things that have been on my to do list for 4+ years. Including painting and decorating inside and growing my own vegetables so keep your fingers crossed for the veg! Recipe of the week You may be having difficulty, like me, in buying bread. Here is a recipe for soda bread, which means you don’t need special flour or yeast.

Ingredients • • • • • • •

200g self-raising flour* 2 tbsp sesame seeds (other seeds or no seed will do) a pinch of salt a grind of black pepper 150g pot natural yogurt 1 tbsp milk or water a little olive oil

Headway South East London & North West Kent Ltd Registered Charity No. 1084323 Affiliated to: Headway The Brain Injury Association 190 Bagnall Road, Old Basford, Nottingham NG6 8SF

Page | 8 Method 1. Heat grill to high and dust a non-stick baking sheet with a little flour. Mix the self-raising flour, sesame seeds, a pinch of salt and a grind of black pepper in a large bowl. Stir in the natural yogurt and milk or water, then mix well to form a soft dough. 2. Divide the dough into 4 and press each piece into an oval approx 5mm thick. Place on the sheet and grill for 3 mins on each side until puffed and golden. Brush with a little olive oil before serving, if you like. * to make self-raising flour from plain flour add ½ teaspoon baking powder plus ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda to 150g of plain flour
