Durante toda sua trajetória, o Lar São João de Deus foi um exemplo no cuidado com os idosos. Sempre preocupado com o bem estar completo de seus acolhidos.

Preocupado com que as suas instalações se tornassem, de fato, um LAR para quem precisava. São incontáveis as histórias de pessoas que encontraram aqui uma família, não só residentes, mas, familiares, colaboradores, benfeitores e amigos.

Há quatro décadas, quando o Lar São João de Deus recebeu seus primeiros residentes, não havia as leis e políticas de proteção aos idosos que hoje temos em nosso país. Mas, não há dúvidas de que os idosos foram cuidados da melhor forma possível e com toda dignidade, pois esta é uma obra de São João de Deus e o seu c a r i s m a d e s d e o i n í c i o e s t eve impregnado em todos os rincões e em todas as pessoas que fizeram e fazem parte desta grande família.

São João de Deus disse quando estava para começar a sua obra em 1538, “Quero ter uma casa onde as pessoas sejam tratadas com eu gostaria que me

tratassem na minha necessidade”. É esse o espírito da família do Lar S. João de Deus: cuidar de nossos idosos da mesma forma como gostaríamos de ser cuidados; com respeito, dignidade, carinho e atenção.

O Lar São João de Deus se orgulha de ser referência no atendimento aos idosos para toda a Região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro. Com um projeto terapêutico que busca ver a pessoa holisticamente, em todas as suas dimensões, o Lar promove um ambiente agradável e seguro, onde os idosos são estimulados a fazerem atividades físicas e cognitivas, manter uma vida social com a comunidade e viver a sua maturidade com alegria.

Agradeço a todas as pessoas que ajudaram a construir nossa história. São residentes, familiares, colaboradores, voluntários, benfeitores e amigos que fizeram e fazem a diferença em nossa Casa. A nossa história é feita por pessoas, e são as pessoas que aqui já viveram e vivem que fazem com que este seja um lugar diferenciado, um lugar repleto de vida.

In the course of its growth, the Home of Saint John of God set an example in the care of elders, while always concerned for the holistic well being of its residents. It is a concern that this premises should become a dwelling for those in need.

Countless are the stories about people who found family here. Not just residents but family members, benefactors, sponsors and friends.

When the Home took its first residents four decades ago, there were no laws and regulations in the country to protect our elders as we have today. Even though there is no doubt that our elders were taken care of with dignity and given the best available care possible.This is the work of faith of Saint John of God. From the beginning his charisma was impregnated in all places and all people that are part of this big family.

When Saint John of God was ready to start his work of faith in 1538, he said:“I want to build a home where all people should be treated as I would like people to treat me in my need”.

That's the spirit of our family here in the Home of Saint John of God.Taking care of our elders the same way we would like to be treated ourselves; with respect, dignity, tenderness and full attention.

The Home of Saint John of God is proud to be a reference point of in treatment of elders in all the Serrana Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

With a unique therapeutic project that seeks to treat the person in a holistic way, in all dimensions, the Home promotes a pleasant and safe environment where elders have an incentive to perform physical and cognitive activities and to keep social interaction with the community as well as living their mature years with joy.

I am thankful to all who helped to build our history.They are residents, family members, collaborators, volunteers, benefactors and friends. They make a difference in our Home. Our history is made by people that lived here and are living here making this place a unique one.A place filled up with LIFE!

A Message on the Occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the Home of St. John of God Venho com muita alegria parabenizar a todos pelos 40 anos do Lar São João de Deus e a Ordem Hospitaleira de São João de Deus pelo trabalho realizado nestas quatro décadas de dedicação a Petrópolis e àqueles que necessitam do amparo social e espiritual.

Ao celebrarmos os 40 anos, temos a alegria de agradecer a Deus pelo carisma da Ordem, fundada por São João de Deus na Espanha no séc XVI, pois desde a sua fundação vem transformando em realidade as palavras de Jesus Cristo:“Tive fome e me destes de comer, tive sede e me destes de beber, fui peregrino e me acolhestes, estive nu e me vestistes, enfermo e me visitaste, estive preso e viestes ver-me” (Mt 25,35-36).

Por isso, louvamos a Deus a existência do Lar São João de Deus, pois vem realizando desde a sua fundação um excelente trabalho em Petrópolis na acolhida daqueles que não podem ficar com suas famílias, sempre dando testemunho do amor de Cristo.Aproveito a oportunidade para agradecer aos colaboradores do Lar

I come before all of you filled with joy and to congratulate you on the 40th Anniversary of the Home of St. John of God and for the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God for the work accomplished within the past four decades of commitment to Petropolis and to those in need of social and spiritual support.

In celebrating this 40th Anniversary we gladly thank God for the Order's charisma that was found in Spain on the 16th century by St John of God and, since it's foundation it is turning into reality. In the words of Jesus Christ: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me”. (Mt 25,35-36) Because of that, we praise the Lord for the existence of the Home of St John of God that, since its foundation, is performing an outstanding job in Petropolis by embracing those who cannot stay with their families – always a testimony of Christ's love. I take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors of the Home and the Order for taking and caring for the ill priests in their old age with the same care children take care of their parents in sickness and old age.

O Lar de Itaipava celebra os seus quarenta anos de existência. Ao longo destes anos muitos foram os Irmãos que por aqui passaram, alguns já foram ao encontro do Pai. É altura de homenagear os falecidos e lembrar os que ainda vivem. Ao longo da sua história o Lar sempre esteve vocacionado para acolher e ajudar pessoas que pela idade, pela falta de saúde ou por falta de um suporte social tiveram que deixar as suas casas e procurar ajuda. É a missão do Lar de S. João de Deus e de qualquer outra casa que leve o nome e o carisma de S. João de Deus.

O envelhecimento normal acontece em todos nós, não conseguimos fugir desta realidade e quem disser o contrario está enganado. O envelhecimento faz parte do ser humano. O nosso envelhecimento normal deve ser aceito com muita naturalidade. Mesmo na maior idade o idoso continua a ter um papel importante na sociedade em que vivemos, é o ser testemunho de uma vida de entrega e de trabalho em relação aos filhos, aos netos, à transmissão de valores que não mudam.

Para os idosos jamais deve faltar a oportunidade de fazer atividades, cuidar

do seu intelecto e serem pessoas activas e interessadas. Este é um grande desafio que o Lar S. João de Deus nunca deve esquecer.

As pessoas idosas que acolhe tem o direito a ter uma vida saudável, nunca lhes pode faltar o necessário para que a sua vida seja uma vida vivida com dignidade.

Ser idoso não é um mal. É consequência do nosso próprio nascimento.

The Itaipava Home celebrates 40 years of existence. In the course of those years many were the brothers and sisters that stayed with us and some have already left us to meet Our Father.

Now is the moment to pay a tribute to the dead and to remember the living. In the course of its history, the Home has always focused on taking and helping those who because of their age, lack of health or lack of social support had to leave their homes behind and had to seek our help.That is the mission of our Home and of the Homes that take the name and charisma of Saint John of God. The aging process is natural and happens to all of us. We cannot escape that reality. Whoever says differently is deeply mistaken. Aging is part of our being human and should be taken lightly. Even in their senior years people have an important role in our society. They are the testimony of lives and work dedicated to their children and grandchildren and to the passing of important values that don't change.

Elders should never lack the opportunity of performing various activities and improving their intellect by being active and alert. That is the challenge that the Home of Saint John of God should never forgets. The elders taken by the Home have the right to live a healthy life. Nothing should be missing in their lives for it should be lived in dignity.

To be old is not a bad thing. It is the consequence of us being born.

The Home of Saint John of God reached its 40th year with the extraordinary quality of taking care of elders in the spirit of Saint John of God.The Home follows the steps of its Patron, taking responsibility, looking for answers, using strategies in order to accomplish ethical actions and to be sensible to the particular conditions of the elderly.

In the course of 40 years, the professionals of the Home have been seeking to understand the elder's individuality by respecting their life history and their knowledge.

Today the Home of Saint John of God appeals to the community's engagement in transforming the reality of the older people in order to humanize the relationship between living/aging because we believe in a new model of humanized care focused on the needs of elders. We could then dream and believe in the process of living/aging with more dignity.

I take this opportunity to thank the Brothers and sponsors of the Home of Saint John of God for the wonderful job they are doing and I hope that you never give up following the steps of Saint John of God who have walked the Earth doing good for all.

Nossa Trajetória Our path Década de 60: Ordem Hospitaleira chega à Petrópolis A Diocese de Petrópolis, impulsionada pelo seu 1º Bispo Dom Manuel da Cunha Cintra, promove uma grande campanha chamada “Fé, Cultura e Assistência”. O objetivo era construir a torre da Catedral, criar um centro universitário (UCP) e fazer uma casa para assistência dos idosos de Itaipava e região. Como os gastos com a construção da Torre da Catedral e da Universidade foram muitos, a Diocese não conseguiu cumprir seu terceiro objetivo e para isso convidou a Ordem Hospitaleira de S. João de Deus para cuidar da assistência dos idosos de Itaipava. Quando a Ordem assumiu o projeto, a construção do Centro ainda estava no esqueleto, mas já tinha muitas doações de materiais para a obra.

Década de 60 The 60's: the Hospitaller Order arrives at Petropolis In 1963 the Petropolis diocese, under the direction of its first bishop, Dom Manuel da Cunha Cintra, began a massive campaign under the name “faith, culture and care”. Its objectives were: to accomplish the completion of the cathedral tower, to create a university center (UCP) and to build a nursing home to assist the elderly population of Itaipava and environs. But, in 1964, the diocese realized that since the two first projects were so expensive, they would not be able to finish the third.Therefore the diocese invited the order Hospitaller of St. John of God to fill the gap and to take care of the elderly population of Itaipava.When the order, finally, took over the project, the home was only a skeleton but there were, already, many building materials donated for the home.

Main dates: 1963- The corner stone was laid by the diocese.

1964- The diocese invites the order to take over.

1966- The donated materials were exhausted and the arrival of the first brothers.

1969- Arrival of the sisters from Our Lady Medianeira institute.

Década de 70: É inaugurado o Lar São João de Deus No dia 08 de março de 1970, com uma grande festa, é solenemente inaugurado o Lar São João de Deus e Ambulatório São Vicente de Paula. A festa contou com a presença de muitas autoridades civis e eclesiásticas da cidade, personalidades ilustres do Rio de Janeiro e grande presença da comunidade local. A primeira comunidade dos Irmãos Hospitaleiros foi composta por: Pe. David Ramos Fernandes (Superior e Diretor), Fr. JoaquimVaz Correia, Fr. João Alves e Fr. José Joaquim Fernandes (mestre de noviços). No final da década de 70 o ambulatório foi desativado, ficando todo o espaço dedicado ao Lar de idosos.

Década de 70 The 70's: the home St. John of god is opened On March the 8th 1970, with a great ceremony, the nursing home St. John of God and the ambulatory clinic St. Vincent de Paula are solemnly inaugurated. The ceremony included the presence of many civil and ecclesiastic authorities from the city, celebrities from Rio de Janeiro as well as the local community at large. The first community of Hospitaller brothers was formed by: Father David Ramos Fernandes (Father Superior and director), Friar Jose Joaquim Fernandes (master of novices), Friar Joao Alves and Friar Joaquim Vaz Correia. In the late 70's the ambulatory clinic was deactivated leaving all its space for the nursing home.

Main dates: 1970- Official opening.

1971- Friar ManuelVargas Canes takes over as Father Superior and Director.

1971- Through the request of city councilman Osmany R. de Lima, the city donated sidewalks for the front and surroundings of the home.

1974- Friar Jose Joaquim Fernandes takes over as Father Superior and Director.

1977- Friar JoaquimVaz Correia takes over as Father Superior and Director.

1979- Ambulatory clinic deactivated.

Década de 80: Lar São João de Deus se torna mais conhecido

Década de 90: Fr. Fernandes se torna referência em Itaipava

Com a expansão das atividades do Lar, surgiu a necessidade de mais espaços.

Como a Comunidade dos Irmãos ocupava parte do segundo piso se pensou em construir uma casa separada somente para os Irmãos. Para isso foi adquirido um terreno próximo que pertencia a Diocese e estava reservado para construir uma capela.

No entanto, não foi possível realizar a obra naquele momento, sendo concretizada somente em 2002.

Durante toda a década de 90 o Fr. Fernandes vai estar à frente do Lar se tornando uma grande personalidade de Itaipava. Realizou grandes obras, incluso a construção de uma grande capela num bairro próximo. Com a mudança do perfil dos residentes, surgiu a necessidade de fazer uma rampa para o segundo piso, pois muitos tinham dificuldades para subir e descer as escadas. Também nesta mesma época foi feito o muro e portão da entrada principal.

Década de 80 The 80's: the home becomes more known As the activities in the home were expanded it became necessity to create more space. Since the brother's community occupied the second floor, the idea was put forth to relocate them to a separate house dedicated only for the community of brothers. For that purpose a close-by construction site which belonged to the diocese, for the building of a chapel, was acquired. However, the brother's house could not be finished at that time but was completed later in 2002.

Main dates: 1980- Father Casimiro da Silva F. da Costa takes over as responsible.

1982- The U.N. first world assembly about aging.

1983- Friar JoaquimVaz Correia takes over as Father Superior and Director.

1986- Friar Joaquim Pereira das Neves takes over as Father Superior and Director.

1988- Brazil's federal constitution makes strong reference about the proper care for the elderly.

1989- Friar Luis Pereira do Couto takes over as Father Superior and Director.

1990 - Fr. José Joaquim Fernandes assume como Superior e Diretor até 2001 1991 - Construção da Capela Nossa Senhora de Fátima Madame Machado

Década de 90 The 90's: Friar Fernandes becomes a reference in Itaipava Throughout the all of the 1990's Friar Fernandes was the head of the nursing home and thereby became a well known personality in Itaipava. He accomplished several building projects during his time: the building of a large chapel in a nearby neighborhood, a ramp connecting the first to the second floor as well the frontal wall and gates.

Main dates: 1990- Friar Jose Joaquim Fernandes takes over as Father Superior and Director (until 2001).

1991- The building of our lady of Fatima's chapel in Madame Machado.

1994- The national policy for the elder is born.

1996- The frontal wall and gates are finished.

1999- The ramp of the inner patio is finished.

Década de 2000: Novos Rumos Para acompanhar as novas leis e políticas de proteção ao Idoso, o Lar São João de Deus passa por uma grande mudança administrativa, estrutural e assistencial. Começando na gestão do Fr. Júlio Faria, continuando com Fr. João Pereira até a gestão atual foi implantado uma equipe de enfermagem 24 hs, assistência médica, nutrição, fisioterapia, psicologia, PHV (Pastoral da Saúde, Humanização e Voluntariado), serviço social e diversos projetos que visam manter os idosos ativos e integrados (Tai Chi Chuan, Ateliê, Cozinha experimental, Projeto Pedagógico, Suderj em Forma e passeios). Em 2007 deu-se início as obras de reestruturação e adequação da parte física do Centro, sendo solenemente inaugurada em novembro de 2008.

2001 - Fr. Júlio Faria dos Reis assume como Superior e Diretor 2002 - Construção da Casa dos Irmãos e da Capela São João de Deus

2004 - Fr. Adriano Barbosa M. Duarte assume como Superior dos Irmãos.

Década de 2000 The decade of 2000: the Home of S.J.G. changes course Following the passage of statutes for the protection of elders, the Home of St. John of God transitions through changes. Included are administrative, organizational and means of offering aid. Starting with the administration of Fr. Julio Faria and following by Fr. Joao Perreira through the current administration there were initiated the following changes

Main dates: 2001- Fr. Julio Faria assumed the position of Head Director.

2002- Construction of the house of the Brothers and the chapel of St. John of God. 2003- Passage of the law affecting elders.

2004- Fr.Adriano Barbosa M. Duarte assumed the role of Superior of the brothers.

A team of nurses providing round the clock coverage; medical care; nutrition program; physical therapy; Psychological services.

2004- Fr. Joao Pereira dos Santos assumed the position of Director of the Home.

Also pastoral health counseling, volunteerism and humanization (PHV) were implemented. Human services and several other projects were begun to help maintain a more active life for the elders and to remain integrated within society. The latter includes Tai Chi Chuan, studio arts, experimental kitchen, teaching project,“SUDERJ in shape” and field trips.

2005- New National law of the elders is in force.

In 2007 we began the construction and remodeling of the building where the center is located. This was opened in November of 2008.

2007- Fr. Julio Fariara dos Reis assumes the position of Superior of the Brothers.

2007- Fr. Roni Ribeiro becomes director of the Home.

2009- Construction of the dressing room and employee dining hall completed.

2010- The Home of St. John of God celebrates its fortieth year.

Uma Vida pela Hospitalidade A Life for Hospitality

Podemos dizer que o Fr. Fernandes de uma forma ou de outra sempre esteve ligado ao Lar São João de Deus. Esteve no início da obra quando assinou a escritura de doação e fez parte da primeira comunidade; foi o diretor que mais ficou à frente do Lar, por 17 anos e hoje faz parte da atual comunidade dos Irmãos.

Esteve em Itaipava pela primeira vez em 1965. Foi ele quem recebeu o convite de Dom Cintra para a Ordem assumir o projeto do Lar de idosos. Ficou muito entusiasmado com a proposta e no capítulo seguinte fez de tudo para que fosse aprovada a doação. Nomeado Delegado Provincial, cuidou das negociações para a aceitação da obra e em 1966 assinou a escritura de doação.

Dos seus 96 anos, muitos foram dedicados à comunidade de Itaipava.

No princípio era o enfermeiro do ambulatório do Lar e fez muitos atendimentos aos necessitados da região, fazia visitas nas casas e

quando alguma criança do educandário vizinho se machucava era o Fr. Fernandes quem dava os primeiros socorros. Ficou conhecido na região pelo seu carisma e dedicação aos mais necessitados.

Como diretor são muitos os feitos, dos mais importantes podemos citar: a construção da dispensa e mais dois quartos nos fundo da Casa, a construção da Capela Nossa Senhora de Fátima em Madame Machado, a construção do muro da frente e colocação do portão principal, a construção da rampa do pátio interno para acesso ao segundo piso, entre outros. Foi assim que o Fr. Fernandes se tornou uma p e r s o n a l i d a d e e m I t a i p av a , conhecido e admirado por todos.

Vida longa ao Fr. Fernandes. Que ele possa continuar entre nós por muitos anos e como ele sempre diz sem esquecer o mais importante: o seu famoso tripé “tudo passa, só Deus não passa e só Ele que vale a pena”.

It's fair to say that the Fr. Fernandes has been, in one way or the other, always linked to the Home of Saint John of God. He was there when the title of donation of the property was signed and he was a member of the first community. Fr. Fernandes was the director of the Home and held this position the longest, 17 years.Today he is a member of the Community of Friars.

He was in Itaipava for the first time in 1965. He was the one who received an invitation from Dom Cintra to head the project of building the Elders Home for the Order Hospitaller. Fr. Fernandes was highly motivated by the proposition and the challenge. He worked very hard towards legalization of the donation title. He was nominated Provincial Deputy, taking care of legal negotiations when finally, in 1966, he was proud of the signing of the definitive title.

During his 96 years, many were devoted to the Itaipava's community. In the beginning he was a nurse at the ambulatory clinic where he took care of the needs of people from the area. He used to do home visitations to provide care for those in need. He always knew when a child was injured so he could provide first aid help. He got to be known in the region by his charisma and devotion to the needy.

As the director he has accomplished many tasks. Amongst those that we cite are the building of the pantry and two more rooms in the back of the Home. The construction of the Chapel Our Lady of Fatima in Madame Machado followed. Next were the construction of the front wall and the placement of the main gate. Furthermore there was the building of the access ramp to the second floor among other good things.That is how Fr Fernandes became a much respected person, well known and admired by all.

Long live Fr. Fernandes! May he be among us for many years to come. Let's not forget what is important, his famous quote:“In life everything is temporary. God is not temporary. God is worthwhile.”

Role Models of Dedication Como falar de duas almas tão adoráveis como a Irmã Ana e a Irmã Cecília... Bem podemos dizer que essas duas pessoas tão especiais estão ligadas diretamente a história do Lar São João de Deus, pois chegaram aqui antes mesmo da inauguração de nossa Casa isso aconteceu em julho 1969.

Pertenciam ao Instituto Nossa Senhora Medianeira, que mais tarde foi extinto, e vieram para o Lar São João de Deus para colocar a mão na massa, não eram somente orientadoras espirituais e sim trabalhadoras de pulso forte.

Irmã Cecília foi responsável pela lavanderia, não satisfeita chegou a lavar as roupas com as próprias mãos, é claro que já se passou bastante tempo e o nosso Lar já foi profissionalizado há bastante tempo.

Hoje em dia com sua idade bastante avançada faz parte do nosso quadro de hóspedes com muita honra, pois é nossa história que ali esta em cada traço de seu rosto, em cada marca de suas mãos.

Irmã Ana era responsável pelo setor da limpeza, sempre teve muita energia, o que não mudou em nada, pois continua um “azougue” sempre em atividade. É uma artista, voltada para trabalhos manuais. Sua arte se estende a ornamentação de nossa capela que fica por sua conta.A igreja esta sempre um capricho, pois ela é muito exigente. Percebemos a forma que a Irmã Ana circula pela casa, que em cada pedacinho desse espaço tem um pouco dela, afinal de contas são 40 anos fazendo história.

Como podemos perceber essas duas queridas Irmãs Ana e Cecília fazem parte de muitas coisas, não só de nossa casa como também de sua congregação, são as últimas duas integrantes do Instituto Nossa Senhora Medianeira. Em 2004 receberam a carta de irmandade da Ordem Hospitaleira, a qual as torna irmãs hospitaleiras.Agradecemos os vossos esforços, pois dessa maneira podemos estar aqui hoje comemorando esses 40 anos com tanta dignidade!

Let me say just a little something about these two adorable souls, Sister Ana and Sister Cecilia? They are so special that their lives are intertwined with the history of our Home.They arrived here before July 1969 when our Home was founded. They were members of the Institute Our Lady Medianeira which later ceased to exist. They came here to work very hard, not just as spiritual leaders but as devoted multitasking workers.

Sister Cecilia was in charge of the laundry and, many times, not happy with the results she would wash everything with her own hands. Of course, that was a long time ago before our Home had the means to have this job done professionally. Nowadays, in her old age, Sister Cecilia is our guest of honor because she is part of our history. It is a history that is written is each of wrinkles of her face and the markings on her hands.

Sister Ana was in charge of housekeeping. She was very energetic and she didn't change a bit because she is always engaged in some activity. She is an artist and is involved in craft work. Her is involved with decorating our Chapel and keeping it all clean and tidy. She is very strict.There is a part of her in every single inch of our Home which has also been hers during the last 40 years.

We understand that these two dear Sisters Ana and Cecilia are an integral part of our Home and its Congregation… They are the two remaining members of the Institute of Our Lady Medianeira. In 2004 they got the Letter of the Sisterhood of the Order Hospitaller which makes them Hospitallers Sisters!

We are deeply thankful to you, dear Sisters because due to your hard work, perseverance and devotion we are here today celebrating our 40th Anniversary.

Maria Alice Chernicharo da Silveira Perfil de uma Vencedora Profile of a Winner Hóspede do Lar São João de Deus há 32 anos, hoje com 67 anos, é a residente mais antiga do Centro.

Atualmente faz parte da nossa equipe de Bioética e relata com orgulho os bons momentos vividos em nossa Casa. Foi catequizada pelo Fr. Fernandes que também a ensinou a pescar e é responsável por grande parte da sua formação humana e espiritual, além de levá-la a muitos passeios entre eles conhecer as outras casas da Ordem no Brasil.

Quando mais nova ajudava na secretaria como recepcionista e por vezes pôde mostrar seus talentos no setor da cozinha fazendo doces e quitutes. Na década de 90 alguns colaboradores traziam seus filhos para o Lar e Maria Alice ficava responsável pelo cuidado das crianças, contando histórias e acompanhando-as para assistir TV. Maria Alice pode acompanhar o trabalho de muitos diretores do Lar, viveu muitas mudanças, assim como todos nós passamos por momentos distintos em nossas vidas. De fato, todas as mudanças que aconteceram

no Lar afetaram diretamente a sua vida, pois sabemos que aqui se tornou a sua casa. É uma honra fazer parte da vida dessa guerreira, vitoriosa e tão querida Maria Alice.

“Hoje estou muito satisfeita com a estrutura física da nossa Casa, os novos setores implantados são para nós de muitíssima importância, no setor de psicologia encontrei apoio e motivação. Usufruo diariamente do setor do PHV, onde encontro momentos de distração e reflexão espiritual. E foi através do setor de fisioterapia que me senti melhor e superei ainda mais as minhas limitações físicas através da terapia e da dança”, MariaAlice relata emocionada.

Being a guest of the Home Saint John of God for 32 years, makes Maria Alice, today 67 years of age, the resident here the longest.

She is now part of the Bioethics team and proudly refers to the good times lived in the Home. She was initiated into the Catholic faith by Fr. Fernandes who also has taught her fishing and has taken her to visit other Homes of the Order in Brazil and many other field trips.

When younger she used to help as a receptionist and for many occasions she would show off her skills as a baker and a cook. During the 1990's some associates would bring their children to the Home and Maria Alice was in charge of them. She used to tell them stories and to accompany them while watching TV. “I'm very happy with the structure of the Home today.The new departments are extremely important to us like the Psychology one where I found support and motivation. I benefit daily from the PHV department where I enjoy moments of meditation and spiritual connection. Because of the department of Physical therapy I am feeling good and I overcome my physical limitations through dance therapy.” Says Maria Alice.

Uma História de Conquistas

A History of Accomplishments Conhecida carinhosamente por todos como Zezé, ela chegou ao Lar em 1997 por intermédio de sua irmã, Maria do Carmo, que na época trabalhava na secretaria e ventilou a possibilidade de uma colocação no setor da limpeza.

Zezé acabou fazendo de tudo um pouco, até se dar conta do título que lhe havia sido dado na carteira “servente”, ficou inconformada com a sua função e tratou de buscar uma forma para mudar isso.

Percebendo a carência no setor da enfermagem, pois naquele tempo só havia cuidadores no Lar, ela resolveu procurar um curso para auxiliar de enfermagem. No primeiro dia de curso perguntou ao professor se ela teria que atuar em hospitais, e o professor disse que ela trabalharia onde quisesse, e o professor perguntou porque, ela falou que seu interesse era somente o cuidado com o idoso.

Zezé fez parte da primeira equipe de enfermagem contratada pelo Lar. Fr. Júlio Faria foi o responsável pela implantação e organização do setor. Ela diz que tudo que sabe aprendeu aqui, seus trabalhos anteriores foram em indústrias e confecções. O contato com pessoas ela só teve a partir do Lar, faz essa afirmação emocionada de se sentir

parte dessa história tão rica de pessoas maravilhosas, as quais ela agradece com todo carinho, como: Fr. Góes, Fr. Fernandes, Fr. Júlio, Fr. João e Fr. Roni.

Relata a experiência de participar das jornadas como importantíssima: “só temos realmente noção da importância da Ordem quando se têm acesso as outras Casas”. Ela também ficou encantada com a simplicidade do nosso Superior Geral, Donatus Forkan. Essas e x p e r i ê n c i a s t o d a s s ó fo r a m importantes para Zezé porque ela soube absorver com sabedoria e singularidade cada traço do carisma joandeíno, esse sim é o rosto do Lar São João de Deus.

Na verdade, é o Lar São João de Deus que agradece a Zezé, porque essa experiência de vida só traz brilho a nossa Casa. E com isso ela consegue passar para os novos colaboradores como é a prática do carisma de São João de Deus. Atualmente já bem próximo de se aposentar, essa é uma de suas preocupações “quem serão os que darão continuidade a esse grandioso trabalho...” Pode ficar tranqüila Zezé, pois graças a Deus temos uma excelente equipe de colaboradores e isso se deve também ao seu exemplo de perseverança e dedicação.

Affectionately known as ZEZE, she arrived to work in the Home in 1997 brought by her sister, Maria do Carmo. Maria was employed as an administrative secretary who, at the time, thought Zeze could work with the cleaning staff and so she did. She worked hard doing a diverse array of chores till she found out that the title of her job in the work registration document was “servant”….Then she tried very hard to change that.

She noticed the need for nurses at the Home because, at that time, only nurses aids were available here. She invested in her education and looked for Nursing Technical courses. On the first day of class she wanted to make sure she was in the right place for her. She inquired if the course would prepare her to take care of elders.That was what she most wanted.

Zeze is part of the first group of graduated nurses hired by the Home. She is very proud of that. Fr.??? was responsible for implementing and organizing the nursing department. Zeze believes that all that she knows she learned at the Home. Before working at the Home she worked in factories and industries. She gets emotional when she describes the richness of working with people. She is a people's person and she loves what she does.And she does it well.

Being an important part of the lives of these people and part of the Home is what she is thankful for.And she is very appreciative of Fr. Góies, Fr. Fernandes, Fr. Júlio, Fr. João e Fr. Roni .

Actually all of us from the Home are the ones to be thankful to Zeze because her life experience brings joy to our people. Her devotion is an example to all of our associates in keeping the charisma of St John of God. Zeze is nearing the time for her retirement and her concern is with the people that she is going to leave behind and if they are going to continue to work for the elders, a great work of faith.

Do not worry Zeze. Because of your perseverance,dedication, devotion and hard work, we are able to have a good team of associates that are willing to follow your example.

São João de Deus Foi um homem adiantado ao seu tempo.

Ficou conhecido como “o Profeta da Caridade”. Aos 43 anos vivia na cidade de Granada.Tocado por Deus e pela situação de abandono e marginalização que vivia os pobres e doentes, deu uma virada radical na sua vida e passou da compaixão a ação.

Interiorizou a convicção de que todo homem e mulher eram seus irmãos e passou a viver para os que mais necessitavam: “chagados e tolhidos, incuráveis, feridos, desamparados, tinhosos, andarilhos, loucos, prostitutas, mendigos, órfãos...”

Por volta do ano de 1539 funda um hospital inovador para a época, ao qual chamava “Casa de Deus”. Inovador pela forma de tratar o paciente vendo-o holisticamente, é dizer, atendendo-o em todas as suas dimensões, física, psíquica, social e espiritual.

Convidava as pessoas a “fazer o bem a si mesma, ajudando aos mais pobres”. Com a coragem dos profetas e uma postura de não violência, denunciou injustiças sociais, desmandos morais e a desumanização dos cuidados nos hospitais.

Nasceu em Portugal em 1495 e morreu na Espanha em 1550. Seu exemplo e sua filosofia de vida atraíram muitos

colaboradores que deram continuidade a sua obra, fundaram outros hospitais, embarcaram em muitas missões e se espalharam por todo o mundo “fazendo o bem” como quisera São João de Deus. É patrono dos doentes, dos hospitais, dos enfermeiros e dos bombeiros. Sua festa celebra-se no dia 8 de março.

St. John of God was a man ahead of his time. He became known by the name “the prophet of charity”. At the age of 43, when he was living in the city of Granada, he became aware of the precarious situation of the poor and sick people in that city and inspired by god, he sprung away from mere compassion and went straight into action.

He believed, with conviction, that every man and every woman were his brothers and sisters.Therefore, he started to live his life for the benefit of the needy, whether his brothers and sisters were sick, mentally ill, orphans, widows, prostitutes, handicapped, homeless or simply poor.

About 1539, he founded an innovative hospital for that time. He called it “The House of God”. It was innovative in its holistic view of the patient, thereby, treating illnesses of the body, the psyche, social problems and the spiritual.

He was also known to tell people that “by helping the poor one comes to help himself”. With great courage, as well, he denounced social injustice, moral problems and inhuman treatment of hospitalized patients.

Born in Portugal 1495 and deceased in Spain 1550, his long and fruitful life has given inspiration to many who continued his holy work. They founded other hospitals and went on missions and, eventually, spread out through the whole world performing good deeds as was his will.

St. John of God is the Catholic patron saint of the sick, hospitals, nurses and firemen.

His holy day is celebrated on March the 8th.
