Issue 11 • Spring Term 2017

Welcome A message from Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke MBE As we enter 2017 we take this opportunity to look back on the success stories from Hull College Group, and celebrate the events and news that took place in the run up to, and during our Christmas break. The autumn/winter term witnessed more significant changes to our estate. Goole College officially opened their new Carpentry & Joinery Workshops, Hull’s Creative Arts School launched the HU1 Visual Arts Studio, and the new Steve Prescott Sports Centre was officially opened by Diana Johnson MP. HCUK Training proudly announced the securing of a £6m ESF contract to further improve the employability and skill set of the region, and Goole College developed an excellent partnership with Job Centre Plus, delivering an incredibly well attended employment event, providing a vital link in the community connecting employers to job seekers. We were also delighted to announce the BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media course was successful in achieving accreditation from the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), making it the only mixed HE/FE College in the UK to provide the award, recognised alongside 40 other UK Universities. Another recent development was our training partnership with Siemens. Hull College was chosen by Siemens to deliver the first stage training to their own apprentices as part of a trailblazing new apprenticeship scheme. This furthers our already successful partnership with the organisation as we continue to train Siemens Turbine Blade operatives at our Composite Training Centre in Hull. 2017 is of course the year Hull becomes the UK City of Culture and in January the celebrations got off to an impressive start. One Degree student from the Hull School of Art and Design has already played a pivotal role in the early exhibitions with “Bowhead”, a 3D animated exhibition that has been shown to great acclaim. We hope this is just the beginning and we are looking forward to celebrating every project our students have the opportunity to be a part of. There have been many more wonderful student success stories including further achievements in Skills Competitions. Following on from his success at WorldSkills, Josh Hunter represented the UK at EuroSkills in Gothenburg, bringing home a Medal of Excellence, and a Fashion Degree student from Harrogate was awarded with the Yorkshire Young Achiever Award of 2016. A Hull College Catering student became the first recipient of the Yorkshire Chefs Certificate, awarded by a Michelin Star Chef. We will continue to showcase a number of positive and successful highlights across the Group and we are looking forward to the exciting year that will be 2017.

Employability Passport receives Humber LEP validation A trail-blazing Hull College Group programme to produce workready young people to support the growth of the region’s economy has become the first to receive a prestigious accolade. A trail-blazing Hull College Group programme to produce work-ready young people to support the growth of the region’s economy has become the first to receive a prestigious accolade.

skills provider in the Humber to align the development of students’ employability skills to the nationally-recognised CBI criteria and the first to gain validation from the Humber LEP.

The Hull College Group Employability Passport has become the first scheme of its kind to be validated by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

“Employability is at the core of Hull College Group’s culture and curriculum. We are fully focused on equipping students with the core skills to make them work-ready and the personal and professional capabilities for fulfilling careers.

Working with the region’s education providers and businesses, the LEP has set a Humber standard framework for employability passports, based on the seven key employability skills defined by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Hull College Group is the first skills and training provider to adapt its employability passport to achieve the new Humber LEP standard. The accolade underlines Hull College Group’s excellent reputation with employers for preparing students for the world of work. 91% of students progress to employment or further study within six months of completing their course. This reputation was underlined by Hull College Group’s latest Ofsted inspection, held in November 2015, which found the embedding of employability skills was a key strength. Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke MBE, said: “We are proud to be the first training and

“Mapping our curriculum to the seven key skills areas and 22 sub-skills identified by the CBI ensures all our full-time students have the very best opportunity to develop essential employability skills. Qualifications are important, of course, but we know that employers are looking for a broad range of knowledge and skills that equip them to be productive members of the workforce.

“Our Employability Passport provides students with those vital skills and gives employers confidence that they will hit the ground running and adjust smoothly from learning to employment.” Gary Warke MBE, Chief Executive, Hull College Group

Eighteen-year-old Hull College students Lucy Lancaster and Courtney Richards are among the students to achieve the Employability Passport and Seal while completing successfully a NVQ Level 3 Early Years Educator Diploma. Lucy, from east Hull, who will now move on to take a HNC in health and social care at Hull College, said: “It really gives me confidence that I can go out to employers with my certificate to prove I have gained skills while at college that make me employable. I’m very proud to have received it.” Armed with her Employability Passport and Seal, Courtney, also from east Hull, is currently applying for nursery and pre-school teaching support roles. She said: “This definitely puts me in a better position to get a job as it proves I can work as part of a team or independently, I will attend work on time and I can build up relationships with new people at work.”

Harrogate College leads on Group’s new transport strategy

Harrogate College has continued to invest in dedicated new college bus routes as part of the Group’s overall transport strategy, making it even easier for students to access the course of their choice. The College has added a new bus route covering Bedale and the surrounding areas to add to the current Boston Spa, Wetherby and Spofforth links. Principal Debra ForsytheConroy said: “The new route will connect those who live in the Bedale area with Harrogate College and deliver increased choice and opportunity for students. “The aim is to provide students with greater access to vocational opportunities and to provide ease of accessibility straight to the College’s front door.”

Changing Futures – Goole College hosts successful event with Job Centre Plus On Friday 30 September, Goole College hosted an incredibly successful employment event. In partnership with Job Centre Plus, the Changing Futures event helped job seekers find work by inviting local employers, recruiters and volunteer organisations to the college to talk about the roles and vacancies available, and give an insight onto the kind of skills they are looking for. Over 350 job seekers visited the event throughout the day, grabbing the opportunity to talk directly to over 20 local businesses and hand in CVs for the current vacancies. Advisors from Job Centre Plus were on hand to provide help and support updating CVs and completing job applications on the college’s computers. Caron Wright, Principal of Goole College said, “This event has been fantastic and the attendance has

really demonstrated the need to support the local community with employability skills. We would like to thank Goole Job Centre for their hard work in joining us to make this a success and we are proud to have helped so many people here today.” “Goole College believes in the importance of working with the community and as one of our aims is to guide people to employment this event really reinforces that goal.” Diane Hodgson, Recruitment Manager at Goole Job Centre said, “We have been organising this event for some months now in collaboration with Goole College and the local MP’s office and today has been a fabulous event and everyone has put in so much hard work. After speaking to a number of the employers and the other organisations that have supported us, we feel that we’ve done our best for the people of Goole.”

The event was filled with local employers and volunteer services that also enjoyed the opportunity to speak to prospective applicants, and the chance to connect with other support agencies. Wayne Darby, 51, Jobseeker. “ I have been unemployed now for a few months and this event today has been a real eye opener as you get to meet employers face to face and the employers get the chance to see you as a person, not a piece of paper. It’s been an interesting experience and I have applied for a lot of jobs today. Anybody who is unemployed should come to these events.” Visitors and staff were treated to delicious buns, cakes and other treats at the MacMillan Coffee Morning organised by Health and Social Care students at the college which raised an incredible £208 for the charity.

Goole College launches new finance provision Goole College is pleased to announce the start of a new provision, developed in partnership with HCUK Training, aimed at providing essential skills for people who aspire to work in a finance role. In September Goole College announced the start of a new provision, developed in partnership with HCUK Training, aimed at providing essential skills for people who aspire to work in a finance role. The latest provision to come from the Goole College Business and Logistics Centre provides students the chance to study programmes which can help them pursue a career in accountancy, such as the Association of Accountancy Technicians (AAT) Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. This internationally recognised award covers areas such as double entry book keeping, basic costing principles and computerised accounts, and is an exciting new addition to Goole College’s growing provision. This part-time course starts next Friday and there are still a few places available.

6

For anyone already employed in a finance role, there is now the opportunity for you to increase your skill sets by focusing on the individual elements of the AAT that apply to the individual, with short course awards in Bookkeeping and Computerised Accounts, and Accounting Skills for existing business owners. These individual unit short courses can be taken over a period of one to three days, depending on the qualification, and provide an essential skill boost to many finance professionals. To celebrate the new accountancy provision, Goole College held a special launch event, opening up the college to anyone interested in enrolling, providing them with the chance to see the facilities and speak to the tutors. The event took place on Wednesday 7 September in the new Business and Logistics Centre and gave potential students, employers and training providers the opportunity to find out more about the AAT

Qualifications, Apprenticeships and the bespoke training available from Goole College and HCUK Training. Guests were briefed on the implications of the Apprenticeship levy and received an overview of AAT from Andrew Roberts-Morris, Regional Account Manager (Yorkshire & Humber), AAT. Caron Wright, Principal of Goole College said, “We are thrilled about the response our new Workshop has created in the Carpentry and Joinery courses and are absolutely delighted to be able to offer the new AAT provision through our Business and Logistics Centre.” “This really shows that by working alongside HCUK Training, Goole College is fulfilling its promise to provide a provision that fits the skills sets needed by the local community, and we are looking forward to further opportunities this will deliver for us.” “The Open Event was well attended and we really enjoyed seeing how excited people are about the growing provision at Goole College. We are looking forward to a very successful and rewarding academic year.”

National Body Accreditation for Journalism and Media students

The Hull School of Art & Design has proved once again that the standard of its provision is among the best in the UK by gaining the prestigious accolade of a national accreditation. The BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media course has been successful in achieving accreditation from the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), making it the only mixed HE / FE College in the UK to provide the award, recognised alongside 40 other UK Universities. Primarily focused on accrediting Journalism courses within Higher Education, the BJTC Council Members are respected and experienced industry professionals, with impressive links to organisations such as the BBC, ITV, ITN, Sky News, and Channel 4 among many others. The BJTC accreditation is highly

valued throughout the broadcast journalism and media industry, as well as the higher education sector, representing the very highest level of industry based training for multi-platform media. Students who achieve the award can clearly demonstrate they are ready to enter into employment and trained to the very best standards. The journey to accreditation is collaborative and the council does not set syllabus or exams. Instead, they invite colleges to construct and present an offering that reflects the standards and guidelines set by the forum of employers as well as developing additional distinctive features of their own. This process was carried out across 2 years, with visits, discussions and assessments from the BJTC, working alongside HSAD to tighten the current course and drive focus towards the skills criteria determined by employers and the council. The connection to the council means ongoing support and visits to continuously improve and grow the provision. One major factor in gaining this was the opportunity of individual and more focused study plans for students

due the smaller and more intimate class numbers, as well as the diverse student body they provide. Another was the inclusion of regular simulated ‘News Production Days’, where students are tasked with running an active and busy magazine newsroom in a role play scenario across a day, from morning briefings , to story creation and through to publication. These days often involve local media professionals on hand to provide feedback and guidance. Programme Leader and Associate Dean Jackie Goodman said, “I’m delighted that the BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media degree at Hull School of Art and Design has received accreditation by the BJTC. The is the result of a two-year process of advisory visits, which have helped us to make sure our students are getting high quality training in all aspects of online and multimedia journalism. I am especially pleased that we are the only college-based journalism course to have achieved BJTC accreditation, which enables us to stand alongside many of the longer-established university courses as a centre of excellence in journalism training. “

Hull Daily Mail Digital Awards 2016 In August, the Hull Daily Mail revealed their shortlist for this annual award ceremony, which included a Hull College tutor. Carpentry & Joinery tutor Michael Abel was shortlisted in the category, Best use of technology within Education. The standard of this year’s entries demonstrated how Hull’s pioneering digital industry is second only to London, according to one of the city’s leading innovators. The awards, now in its second year, is organised by KCOM and the Mail

and aims to recognise the best in emerging digital technology in Hull and the East Riding. The awards were held on 8th September at Hull’s C4DI building in the new outdoor amphitheatre, with guests enjoying a food and drink reception on arrival supplied by ‘PIE’, with music from Hull band The Mighty and the Moon. Guests were then seated for the ceremony, hosted by David Keel, the 2015 Digital Ambassador, with a key note speech from BBC Click

presenter Kate Russell. Unfortunately Michael was beaten to first place by the Hull Children’s University, but he did rank in the final three which is in itself a huge achievement, so well done Mike. David Keel, co-founder of leading Hull-based firm Trident and the reigning Digital Ambassador, said: “The amount and standard of entries this year is an absolute testament to this new industrial revolution which is taking place in Hull.

Group success as Harrogate student wins national award Students from Harrogate College and Hull College have achieved success in national bridal design competition, the Bridal Buyer Awards 2016. Held at the Royal Hall in Harrogate on Monday 12 September, The Harrogate Bridal Buyers Awards is a prestigious industry event, in which Hull College Group has a long history of success. The Event is the largest in the industry and welcomes over 170 exhibitors across three days, showcasing the latest trends and brands and attended by local designers and fashion icons such as Wayne Hemmingway, who was a member of the judging panel. Hull College Group achieved success, with the award of ‘Best Student Designer’ going to Harrogate student Berenice Gilmore, while a further four learners from The Hull School of Art & Design were included in the six category finalists. The challenge set by the judging panel was to interpret the brief of “Birds of Paradise”, and each competing student created a mood board and specification sheets, as well as the wedding dress itself. The Hull students, who beat 100’s of other entries from across the UK to be included in the final six, were third year BA (Hons) Fashion graduates Rochelle Flores, Zoe Hiatt, Leoretta Manyike and Amiee Dent. The high standard these students have shown has also helped them achieve impressive employment

8

in the industry, seeing one of the four gain employment with Ted Baker, while another student has recently secured work with another high profile design agency in Leeds. Gary Warke, Chief Executive of Hull College Group, said: “We are incredibly proud of the students who made the final and this shows the high standard to which they operate.” “At Hull College Group we place great importance on encouraging our students to showcase their work and to receive national recognition from industry professionals is a reflection of the extremely high standard they are working at. We are sure that all of those recognised have an exceptional career ahead of them.“It is also testament to the hard work and commitment of tutors at both colleges that the students who were recognised were able to develop the skills and creative freedom to put them ahead of the other competitors”. Lynn Benson, Programme Leader BA (Hons) Fashion said,“The Hull School of Art & Designs third year BA (Hons) Fashion students entered into the true spirt of the Bridal Buyers competition, by selecting key elements from their research into Birds of Paradise to design, pattern cut and produce colourful couture wedding dresses which would fulfil any brides vision of that unique dress for that very special day.”

Actavo donates valuable equipment to Goole College

The newly built Construction and Joinery workshop at Goole College has received a generous donation in the form of an industrial timber saw. Actavo, a leading international strategic operations company, visited Goole College’s brand new workshop to have a look around, meet the students and deliver the valuable equipment. The saw was presented to Goole College Principal Caron Wright, students and staff by Director of UK Operations for Actavo, Matthew Goff, and the college’s 14-16 students were given the first opportunity to use this and familiarise themselves with the equipment. Matthew Goff said,“I heard about the great news regarding this workshop opening from a member of staff with family connections to the college and I wanted get involved in terms of helping in any way that I could.“ “Actavo is a growth organisation which meant we had this equipment available to spare, and I thought that if we could make a contribution

10

to support training and skills development in the region then we should do it.” “We feel that students will really benefit from using this equipment and will not only gain the essential skills but will also learn to treat equipment with the respect it deserves. In the long term, and from a business perspective, we are looking at a partnership approach. I have around 60 joiners at the moment and I’m aware that in around 5-6 years’ time I will be faced with the challenge of an ageing workforce. It’s my job to identify opportunities to develop a partnership with Goole College who can help to train apprentices and upskill the workforce, and hopefully bring some of that talent into my business.” Rick Gilroy, Joinery tutor said,“The donated saw is ideal for training purposes due its size and portability, and the students will be able to use this saw for ripping down timbers and incorporating safe methods of use including correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”

“It will also be able to demonstrate maintenance and the safe removal and replacing of the blade and components.” Caron Wright, Principal of Goole College said,“We are extremely grateful for this generous donation by Actavo and proud that they have recognised the potential our students show for the future workforce of the region. It is occasions like this that enhances the wider partnerships being made here at Goole College, and once again, reinforces the reputation of our provision and the experience we can offer our students.” “Our workshop opened in September and is now fully equipped with benches and various machines, and this fantastic new addition really will provide more to our students’ learning experience. An official launch ceremony will be held on 11 November”. “We look forward to a valuable and productive partnership with Actavo.”

Hull College helps shape Siemens’ future workforce Hull College welcomed the first batch of learners selected by Siemens for their new Apprenticeship Programme. A group of 16 young people were chosen from over 400 applicants to be taken on in the first stage of recruitment for the Hull Blade Factory, and as part of their 3 and a half year journey, they will learn the skills needed for their career at Siemens through Hull College. The students will attend full time for the first academic year of the Level 3 programme and return weekly on day release in their second year, before choosing a preferred sector to specialise in for the 3rd year. The group includes learners from various ages and backgrounds, including a former Hull College student, school leavers and a former estate agent. The programme will see the students receive tuition from Hull College engineering tutors who will guide them on to their employment at Siemens. Poppy Hutchinson, 17 said, “I applied because this kind of opportunity is rare in Hull and I was already doing mechanical engineering at HETA, so I thought I should give it a go. I thought it was a joke when I got the email saying I was successful as I really didn’t think I would be selected, but I’m proud to be a part of this.” “Learning at Hull College really helps with our training as we have the chance to use the library which makes assignments easier, so the support we receive from studying here is really beneficial.”

Chelsea Ward, 20 said, “I was inspired by the ‘Jobs for Women’ campaign and at the time I was working as an estate agent. I wanted to do something different and knew this was the route for me.“ I had already studied for 2 years at a different college so was looking forward to coming here and I have been surprised by the diverse student body. The facilities are excellent and really help to create the perfect learning environment for our group.” Richard Oxborough, 16 said, “After leaving Malet Lambert School I decided to apply for Siemens because it is a big company with lots of opportunities, and I was looking for a career for life.” “I really couldn’t believe it when I found out I was chosen and I was in shock, 400 applied. I’m very proud to be chosen. I’m learning a lot already and the equipment at Hull College is fantastic, I’m very proud to have been selected.” Charlie Fletcher, 19, said, “I studied Engineering at Hull College for 2 years and I applied for this while I was still here. I didn’t think there would be room for young people but after applying I was surprised to be chosen.” “Hull College has helped me because without them I would not be here or learning for a great career with Siemens. I like it here and the environment is productive and good for me.”

Goole College Carpentry & Joinery workshop official opening This new provision has already attracted a large number of new students, which has seen the need to create a second programme to accommodate the over subscription.

Early in 2016, work began on the construction of a new, state of the art carpentry and joinery workshop at Goole College. Work was completed in September ready for the new academic year, and on Friday 11 November, Goole College launched the facility with an official grand opening. This project has been delivered in partnership with the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and supported with £0.375m from the Government’s Local Growth Fund as part of the Humber’s Growth Deals between the Government and the LEP. The workshop is designed to deliver a provision that provides the vital skills needed by local businesses which will enhance the local skill set within the community.

The workshop was officially opened by Kishor Tailor, Chief Executive of the Humber LEP, and following the ceremony the guests were given a tour of the new facility and were given the opportunity to meet the students who will benefit from the workshop. Kishor said,“Goole College is a key contributor to the Humber LEP’s wider Skills agenda, providing valuable training to decrease the skills gap in the area.” “This impressive new facility will engage young people in understanding and learning important skills, providing the future bright stars of many Humber businesses.”

in anticipation of supporting local business needs. The new workshop has been constructed throughout the year and the building contractors, Hobson & Porter, made excellent progress in a short time, to ensure that everything was completed in time for September.“ “The opening of the workshop is very exciting and important not only to prospective students but also the local community and gives the college the opportunity to deliver curriculum that meets the needs of local employers. It will provide excellent facilities for people to either upskill or train for careers in carpentry and joinery. “We are really excited to officially launch this new facility and the provision it will support.”

Caron Wright, Principal of Goole College said,“We’re delighted that Goole College has this excellent opportunity and investment for the region in terms of carpentry and joinery provision. We have had substantial Local Growth Fund investment secured through the LEP

Hull College takes on WorldSkills UK Finals On Saturday 19 November, two Advanced Nail Technician students from Hull College competed against the very best in the UK at this year’s WorldSkills UK finals with one student walking away with a Bronze medal. Nicole Henry was awarded the Bronze medal in the Level 3 Advanced Nail Technician category and Sophie Mitchell was placed in the top five finalists, making Nicole one of just five medal winners to come from Hull College’s WorldSkills UK finalists over the years. Sophie and Nicole spent months training hard in preparation for the prestigious competition. Their journey began back in June when they took part in the WorldSkills UK semi-finals in Manchester. They were then selected to take part in the national finals which took place at the Birmingham NEC as part of the national Skills Show, where they were required to compete against 6 other finalists from across the UK and produce a full set of French Acrylic Nails on live models during a 2.5-hour session. Over 80,000 visitors attended the Skills Show, so not only did they compete against their peers, they were closely scrutinised by a panel of judges and of course the visiting public. Nicole Henry said,“The arena was really busy but I tried to block it out and just get on with it, so I wasn’t nervous, I was just concentrating on what I was doing.“ “Because I’ve trained so hard for this, the time limit didn’t faze me. In College tutors train us to carry the treatments out in commercial time, so in competition you have to spend a little more time checking every last detail before finishing.” “I was so shocked when they announced my name as I really didn’t expect to win a place, and my first reaction was disappointment at not placing higher, but then it sunk in just what an achievement this actually was.”

16

“This means the world to me and it is something my son will be proud of when he’s older. I want to own my own salon so being a WorldSkills UK medal winner is something that will set my salon apart. I really advise the current set of students to get involved and go for it as it will change your life.” Kerry Wray, Nail Technician tutor said,“They were both so calm and focused, having done the preparation beforehand. The session lasted 2.5hrs and they both did so well but looked relieved when it was over.“ “I listened to the announcement over the phone and I was shaking as they called out the names. I was so nervous for them but happy when I heard Nicole’s name being called out. I’m so proud of both of them.” “It not only means the world to the students but it’s also a big thing for us, as it’s our first medal in Beauty and really shows what Hull College can do. We hope they go on to get great jobs in the industry and being able to say they are among the best on the UK will be amazing for them. They have been an inspiration to my students and I hope they will come back to help and support the next batch of competitors.” Principal of Hull College Graham Towse said,“Once again, Hull College has led the way in skills competitions in the region and is clearly demonstrating the high level of skills development provided by the College and demanded by our employers. We’re really proud of our year on year success at WorldSkills UK and incredibly proud that Nicole will join the likes of last year’s competitors Stephen Lodge and Lorna Thompson as well as Josh Hunter, who has gone on to great success after being selected to represent the UK in Bricklaying at EuroSkills in Gothenburg in December and is also training for Squad UK for selection to compete in the WorldSkills 2017 final in Abu Dhabi.”

“The success of our students in skills competitions is really down to the commitment of our students and our teaching staff who continually invest many hours of their own time in order to make this happen. We all take our hats off to them for their passion for high level skills development “ “Not only are Nicole and Sophie Ambassadors for Hull College, they are Ambassadors for their industry and the City of Hull too.” Hull College played another major role in this year’s final. Two chef tutors from the School of Catering and Hospitality were chosen to take part in the judging panel for the final of the Catering competition. Curriculum Leader Ian Snedden and Chef Tutor Phil Dixon travelled to the NEC alongside the Nail Technician students to judge the catering finalists. They are no strangers to competitions either having trained a long list of champions over the years and have worked alongside last year’s World Skills UK Bronze medallist Stephen Lodge, who is currently training for Squad UK for selection to compete in the WorldSkills 2017 final in Abu Dhabi. Phil Dixon has also been working alongside Squad UK contestants in his role as the Team UK Expert Trainer for Confectionary and Patisserie.

The Yorkshire Chef Certificate is a programme endorsed by James Mackenzie, the owner of The Pipe & Glass Inn, South Dalton and is designed to provide relevant work placements to Level 3 Cookery students. Applicants also get the opportunity to learn from the best by working alongside other Michelin Star Chefs. As part of the programme, the work carried out by students is recorded in an official document they can use to supplement their CV to display the standard they have worked to and the established restaurants they have learnt in. Nadia, 36, joined Hull College after moving to Hull, having previously lived in London and Nottingham where she studied her Levels 1 & 2 in Professional Cookery. Nadia said,“When I moved to Hull I wanted to finish my level 3 and Hull College offered me exactly what I needed. I started 3 days a week and as a single parent it’s not been easy, but I had great support from the tutors who drove me to achieve. Ian, Phil and David really encouraged me and I really enjoyed it.” “As soon as I heard about the Yorkshire Chef Certificate I decided to sign up for the challenge and I received my placement at 1884. The dishes really pushed me as they were things I was not used to and I got to use a bigger kitchen which helped. There is no one there to guide you so you need to be able to prove you can do this on your own, which was another attraction to the programme.“

“I took this challenge on top of my current studies which was hard, but in life you have to do whatever you can to move you forward.“ “I am working at the moment but I eventually want to become a Michelin star chef myself and being thrown into the right kind of workplace as part of the certificate has given me the confidence to work on my own in a busy environment.” “I plan to open my own restaurant and this proves I can do it. My advice to any level 2 students is to take the challenge of the Yorkshire Chef Certificate as you never know where it will take you.“ James Mackenzie, owner of The Pipe & Glass In, South Dalton said,“I created the Yorkshire Chefs Certificate after wanting to initiate something similar for a number of years, to help aspiring chefs and to encourage hospitality employers to engage more with colleges.” “The certificate programme allows students the opportunity to gain an extra layer of knowledge and work experience, in addition to what they receive at college.”

skills and commercial awareness to provide a valuable contribution to their kitchens.” “Nadia is very enthusiastic and has shown she has all the attributes required by a chef to work in a professional kitchen. She is a worthy recipient of the certificate and I wish her all the success in her future career.” Ian Snedden, Curriculum Leader at Hull College said,“Nadia has been an exceptional learner at Hull College who demonstrated the key attributes required by employers such as 100% attendance, time keeping and the drive and determination to be the best she can be.” “Nadia also recently gained the accolade of being the only learner in the UK to be awarded a Distinction in the Craft Guild Chefs of Great Britain exam, which is a prestigious culinary diploma.” “She has always been a team player and her quest for knowledge was a further reason for awarding her with the certificate, we could not be more proud of her and we now she will go on to great things.”

“This gives them the edge when they move into employment, demonstrating to employers that they have the

Hull College Degree student hits the right notes with Calum Scott Hull College Music Production student John McIntyre proves that it really never is too late to follow your ambitions, and shows how studying a degree really can change your life. As well as enjoying the new lease of life studying a degree has given him, John is also enjoying worldwide success on the back of his production work with the music world’s current rising star, Calum Scott. John is 38, and lives in Hull. He has always had a passion for music, taking music lessons at an early age and DJing around Hull in his youth, but like many, music took a back seat to make way for family and a career as a self-employed electrician. It wasn’t until a chance meeting with next door neighbour Calum, that saw his fortunes turn around. The pair started working together, producing several tracks which received great local exposure, leading to Calum’s appearance on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in 2015, where he performed ‘Dancing On My Own’, a track produced by John. With his passion once again fired up, John enrolled on a 10 week digital music course and along the way discovered that Hull College offered a BA (Hons) Music Production course. After discussions with his wife, John enrolled on his first year with Hull College. During this time, Calum’s success was increasing rapidly and the pair reunited to re-record the song that made this all possible, which was planned to be released as a single. Using the new skills learnt at Hull College John was able to approach this task in a fresh way and said, “After my 1st year studying, I was able to make this track better than the original recording we produced. The skills I had developed also increased my own confidence, and this meant I could look at this as new entity and bring more panache and flair to the track”. The single was released in March and has now gone on to sell over 1.1

20

million copies worldwide and named as the fastest selling download of the summer. Continuing to work together, John was contracted by Capitol Records to produce a vocal track for Calum, used in a piece performed at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Paralympics in September, and is currently working on new demos to present to industry agents. John puts part of this amazing success down to his own development as a Hull College student and said,“I was used to recording at home, so to have access to the large studios and equipment in the college really opened my eyes to what I was capable of, and the technical knowledge I had gained from my tutors helped me to create something new.” “I’m hoping having this degree under my belt will help further my career as a producer and writer, and if I was to give any advice to people in a similar situation to me it would be, just go for it, you never know where it will take you”. Tracks produced by John can be heard on Calum Scott’s YouTube channel and you can follow him on twitter @johnnymac_35

Former Business Students Awarded University of Hull Excellence Scholarship 2016

Two former BTEC Level 3 Business students have been recognised for their excellence by the University of Hull. Jennifer Megson and Liam Hunter have both been awarded with the University of Hull Excellence Scholarship to support their studies over the next three academic years. This can be rewarded to the students in cash, as tuition fee waiver or accommodation discount. This is an amazing achievement and a fantastic accolade for both students. The business curriculum staff are immensely proud and wish both students every success as they embark on the next step of their academic journey. Jennifer Megson was a distinction student who worked tirelessly during her time at Hull College to ensure she achieved the grades she needed to support her university application. She progressed from level 1 business to level 3 and spent four years of study at Hull College. The student journey was not an easy one for Jenny as she has two small children and juggled her studies around her family commitments and her job as

the Enterprise Officer for the Student Union during the academic year 2015 – 2016. Jenny’s hard work and commitment was also recognised by her efforts to organise the end of year ceremony. Jenny is currently reading English at Hull University after which she intends to study for her Post Graduate Certificate in Education to fulfil her lifelong ambition to become a teacher. Liam Hunter came to Hull College as a mature student in 2014 to study the BTEC Level 3 in Business course. Before embarking on the course he had always had an interest in sport. Liam proved himself to be a responsible and hardworking student, who always adopted a methodical approach working two part time jobs alongside his studies. Although on occasions this was a difficult task, he never lost focus and always produced his work to an excellent standard and in a timely manner. He also maintained his dry sense of humour and remained popular amongst his peers.

Liam is currently reading Business Management at Hull University. Whilst studying at Hull College it was clear that Liam has huge employment potential and we are confident that after his studies at the University of Hull he will enter the employment market and prove himself to be a huge asset to any organisation. Both Jenny and Liam are examples of how hard work and commitment can pay dividends and in this instance how it can provide you with financial support to assist with your studies. Both students are examples of excellence, and it is fantastic to see that this has been recognised in their potential as university students.

Hull Sports students raise the Challenge Cup Students learning on the Hull FC Foundation Academy were recently given the opportunity to get their hands on the Challenge Cup! Ran in partnership with Hull FC, the Academy gives learners the chance to gain extra experience, knowledge and skills while benefiting directly from the use of Hull FC’s coaches, facilities and even the stadium itself. As a treat for the hard work the students have put in so far, staff from Hull FC brought along the famous Challenge Cup for the students to see up close and have photos taken holding it. The cup was won by Hull FC when they beat the Warrington Wolves at Wembley in August 2016 and this special opportunity is a great example of the perks of studying in this programme. Lee Hall, Head of Education at Hull FC said, ‘The Hull FC Foundation Academy is a fantastic opportunity for young rugby league players in the city. We recruited specifically for the programme and went out over the summer to all the under 16s community clubs advertising

24

the course. The aim for Hull FC Foundation is to offer students experience of high level coaching and the chance to compete in the one of highest leagues for students. We had a great response and many have signed up after several training sessions and taster events at our training grounds. The students who have enrolled are very passionate about the game and have trained exceptionally well so far and have been dedicated and professional during sessions, these are qualities we will try to maintain throughout the programme. It’s a very exciting partnership and one that we hope will develop and grow over the next couple of years’. Jack Taylor, 17, is studying Level 3 Sport and said,“I chose Hull College as it sounded like a good place based on what others had told me and I decided I wanted to do something around sport, which meant it was perfect for me as I want to move into teaching or possibly look at going Pro in the Mixed Martial Arts.” “In the level 3 stage of the programme we are given the choice of specialising in football, rugby or gym and being an FC supporter

I chose rugby. We get to visit the stadium a lot and things like today are a great benefit from studying in the programme. The main benefit is the amount of hours we get to spend playing sport to develop or skills and it is definitely good for sport students to get out of the classroom more. I would recommend getting involved, it’s really goods for personality building and meeting new people, you get to learn from other people and I feel it’s given me the skills I need to reach my goals.”

Hull College Fashion students support National Pathology Week National Pathology Week is a celebration of pathology and the important contribution pathologists make to healthcare, through a programme of events aimed at people of all ages, and for the second year running Hull College students were given the opportunity to get involved. Fashion students designed and produced a large batch of hats and syringe driver bags which were presented to the Pathology unit at Castle Hill hospital to be given out free to patients as part of their awareness day on Wednesday 9 November. The awareness day, held at Castle Hill Hospital, highlighted to hospital visitors that there is more to pathology than dealing with dead bodies, and it was here that the items were on show and given out to the patients for free. Lyndsey Kemp, Fashion Course Leader said,“We were approached by Kerry from the unit, who wanted us to be involved with National Pathology week. We met to discuss how the Fashion department could play a part and decided we could design and produce the range of hats and bags to help patients.” “It was a great opportunity for our students to be involved with a live project as part of their industry skills studies. As part of the student’s induction week they produced the items using donated fabrics.“ “The students took great pride in producing their accessories and have learnt valuable skills about working as a team, producing quality sewn pieces and completing their work to a deadline.” Kerry Drury, Pathology lab Social Practitioner at Castle Hill Hospital is a former student of Hull College who said her experience at the college first gave her the idea. Kerry said,“I loved my time at Hull College studying Dress Making, so when I was trying to look for community involvement last year, the first place I thought of was the college and looked at ways at getting the students involved. Following the popularity of the hats last year, it made perfect sense to do these again, and

we’re happy Hull College agreed to get involved again.” “Some of our patients are on palliative care and need a syringe driver to carry medication all day. The bags enable them to go about daily life and still keep their medicine with them without drawing the attention these usually get.” “The hats have been created in a modern and fashionable style which helps the patients undergoing Chemotherapy feel less self-conscious.” “We have a number of local schools visiting and as well as promoting what we do here , we are also promoting careers in Pathology so we felt this was also a good chance to show what Hull College can offer.” “Once again, the bags and hats have gone down incredibly well and our patients have been overwhelmed that the students have taken to the time to make these for them.”

ESOL students to feature on Match of the Day A football team created to support Hull Refugees was recently filmed by Match of the Day for an upcoming episode. Among the teams players are several ESOL students from Hull College. The team was created when a local doctor, Dr Mohammed Al Hamas was so moved by the refuge crisis that he decided that something needed to be done locally. The team is made up of players who come from Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Kurdistan and North Africa and they train at the KCOM Stadium. The aim was to create an outlet for the young refugees to help deal with the stressful situations that most have come from, provide links to the community and develop social skills. The uniformed Public Services student in Harrogate enjoyed an event that gave them an insight in to the life in the Royal Air Force and the Public Services students in Hull received an invaluable training and mentoring workshop from the HE Sports students. Hull’s ESOL students were featured in a Hull Daily Mail publication “Faces of Hull”. Hull Cabin Crew students received excellent advice from a former student who has progressed to work with lots of major airlines and Public Service staff got the chance to test their student’s skills in a Go Kart challenge. Every year our students raise lots of money for Children in Need and really throw themselves into the activities and lots of funds were raised in Hull, Harrogate and Goole College. In the second half of November, Harrogate College enjoyed an immensely successful Year 11 Taster Day and the Bistro on the Park launched their regular themed evenings, beginning with ‘Buon Appetito’ which saw the Catering and Hospitality students serving a full house in the restaurant. Harrogate College also enjoyed getting involved in the local community and attended many events at venues such as Nidderdale High School, Harrogate Grammar and Risedale School.

December During the festive period students from Goole College enjoyed a second visit to Drax power station and Hull students in Hull enjoyed taking part in a Fire and Rescue training exercise. Public Service and Sport received a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the National Olympic Cycling Centre at the Manchester’s Velodrome and the Bistro on the Park recorded a staggering 300 guests to their restaurant.
