Welcome A message from Hull College Group Chief Executive Gary Warke MBE

Over the last few months we have seen a number of new government announcements including a new White Paper for higher education, devolution for Greater Lincolnshire, the imminent arrival of the apprenticeship levy as well as further details on how the strategic area reviews are unfolding across the country. This government review of all colleges which will take place in the autumn term of 2016 for our area provides an exciting opportunity to review what all the colleges across Hull, East Riding and North Yorkshire offer to ensure we continue to provide a high quality, sustainable infrastructure to deliver skills across our region in a changing external environment. Across the Group skills competitions continue to play a vital role in our students’ progression, and so far this year we are proud to have a number of achievements to celebrate at all levels. Our students achieved tremendous success at the WorldSkills, with three progressing through the process into the SquadUK stage, putting them forward for selection to represent the UK in the WorldSkills final in Dubai. During this assessment stage, one of our students, Josh Hunter, was chosen to represent the UK in EuroSkills Gothenburg 2016, and we wish him the very best of luck for this competition in December. In addition to these results, our Catering Students claimed an impressive total of 62 medals and awards at the Wessex Salon Culinaire competition held in May.

The Group once again hosted Platform Expos and Hull College Group scooped awards at Hull Daily Mail’s Humber Renewables Awards 2016. We have placed a special focus in this edition on the Group’s continued investment in our estate and official opening of our new Composites Training Centre in East Hull as well as outline our plans for our exciting new Carpentry and Joinery workshop opening soon in Goole. Harrogate College’s £6m campus redevelopment is now well underway and will be completed in mid July. We continue to showcase a number of positive and successful highlights across the Group and we look forward to continuing to do so throughout 2016.

H

ull College Group has launched a new, state-of-theart Composite Training Centre, whose first customer Siemens, will utilise to train their wind turbine blade factory workforce, and revealed plans for further investment to support the growth of key industries. Around £500,000 has been invested to convert a former construction skills facility on Hull’s Preston Road estate into one of only two centres in the UK which specialise in manufacturing skills using composite materials. Business leaders and the media were given a tour of the Hull College Group Composites Training Centre as it was opened by Karl Turner, MP for Hull East. Facilities include a “blade school” which replicates, in miniature, the processes within the new Siemens blade factory. All 800 operational staff from the blade factory will undergo their first stage training there across a period of 14 months.

Group launches Training Centre Guests were given demonstrations of composite manufacture and briefings by two Hull College trainers, who have themselves undergone extensive training in Aalborg, Denmark, where Siemens has an existing blade factory. They also heard from some of the first group of Siemens staff in Hull who have just completed their initial composites manufacturing training. Hull College Principal Graham Towse told the launch event plans were being developed for a further £700,000 investment in facilities to make it a centre of excellence in manufacturing using composite materials for other industries and employers. Mr Towse said: “We’re delighted to launch this facility and showcase the transformation we have seen here as a result of the investment we have made in remodelling and equipping the centre since our training partnership with Siemens was announced last September.

“However, this is just phase one of our development plans. We have plans for phases two and three, which would see the creation of further workshops and training spaces to facilitate a significant expansion of our Composites training provision. “The UK composites market is worth about £1bn to the British economy and composite materials are key to a number of important and growing industries, such as wind power, aerospace, automotive and marine. “We see a significant opportunity to establish a UK-leading training facility for these sectors here in Hull. With skills so closely linked to inward investment decisions, we believe this could stimulate the development of a composites cluster in the city. We are investing in a skills infrastructure to support the growth of existing and new businesses and the creation of skilled jobs.”

“The training we are providing for Siemens is unique to the UK and will play a vital part in delivering the skills to establish a world-class wind power manufacturing operation in Hull.

Hull College Group triumphs at Humber Renewables Awards 2016 Hull College Group is extremely proud to have won the ‘Excellence in Renewable Skills and Training’ Award at the Humber Renewables Awards ceremony. The Awards, held at the Deep on Thursday 3rd March, featured a wide range of the innovative ‘Green’ companies from the region, who gathered together to celebrate the achievements that helped the Humber become recognised as the UK’s Energy Estuary. The ceremony, headline sponsored by Siemens, consisted of eight award categories, with the shortlist covering almost 20 local organisations, meaning that the Hull College Group win came as a very well deserved recognition of the Group’s strategic commitment to developing skills for Renewables and Green Energy. The Judges’ citation stated: “Hull College Group has invested a great deal of time, energy and resource to ensure it can equip local people with the skills needed to capitalise on renewables opportunities. The judges particularly liked how this strategy had helped it to secure a significant, and very competitive, contract with the new Green Port Hull development that will continue to benefit local learners for years to come. Well done Hull College.” We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played a part in this achievement and thank you all for your ongoing support and hard work. More Information on the Hull Daily Mail Humber Renewables Awards can be found on their website.

Carpentry & Joinery Workshop taking shape in Goole Work has now started on the construction of the new Carpentry & Joinery workshop at Goole College, which aims to provide state of the art facilities to enable the brand new provision in September. Local Construction Company Hobson & Porter have begun the first phase of the building works, digging down and preparing to install the foundations for the building. This is a critical stage of the project due to the unknown aspect of what lies beneath the ground, and never really being sure of what will be found once digging has started. On this occasion, it has been discovered that the current site was built upon an older, Pre fab building, the use of which still remains largely unknown. The next stage of the development will involve filling in the open ground with cement and installing a frame, upon which they will start ‘pilling’, a process similar to building houses on stilts. The use of these metal beams will transfer the weight of the new 260 square foot building on the existing soft ground. The new Carpentry & Joinery workshop is an exciting addition to Goole College and the finished workshop will be the only of its kind in the region, provided much needed skills training to the local work force.

Harrogate estates development Harrogate College’s £6m campus redevelopment is coming on leaps and bounds and has recently seen the unveiling of our brand new reception area. New shutters have been installed, partition walls have been removed and an abundance of extra space has been created.

The estate developments are really taking shape now. Staff and students returning after the Easter holidays were able to see the new reception configuration which is now bright, light and spacious. It has generated lots of positive comments and we’re excited to see it all coming together! Debra Forsythe-Conroy, Principal The ‘high street’ concept is also starting to come together, with the contractors making space for the large windows that will showcase the refectory, training restaurant and hair salon. Walls and floors have also been put up and put down in the Technology Centre as well as in the extension that will house the beauty salon, state of the art science labs and training kitchens.

Hull College social media recognised Social media accounts run by Hull College staff members were recently hailed as ones to follow, as well as receiving runkings in the top 50 UK FE practitioners. Both the Twitter and Instagram accounts run by Amanda Reeves, and the Hair, Beauty and Catering Twitter account, run by Nicola Alison, received high praise for the level of engagement and communication their accounts have provided for staff and students. The competition, organised by JISC, searched for people currently working for a college or learning provider in the UK who were using social media to improve learning and teaching or to create positive change within their organisation. The Top 50 in the final line-up, determined by nominations and a panel of social media experts, features everyone from college managers and leaders, to tutors and support staff, on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google Plus and YouTube. Here’s what the judges had to say about the two winners: Hull College Hair, Beauty and Catering @hcukhbc “Hull College’s hair, beauty and catering department now use Twitter and Moodle to help create interest in their work, and to convert interest in their courses into enrolments.

6

Nicola Allison owns @hcukhbc and all the staff use it to share links with students at the point of enquiry and interview letters, maintaining contact and interest through the enrolment process and on into college life. Staff regularly tweet about what’s going on in classes, celebrations, open events, achievements, new courses and link to Moodle for students who might want more information.” Amanda Reeve @ReeveAmanda “Amanda teaches theatrics, media and special effects make up at Hull College. As make-up artistry is mainly freelance, she uses Instagram and Twitter with her students – past and present – to showcase their achievements. She also encourages them to share pictures and short videos of day-to-day creations within college, as well as encouraging local employers to follow her page to facilitate work experience and sometimes employment opportunities.” So if you use Twitter or Instagram, make sure you follow these accounts to keep up to date. People far and wide, including our students and staff, kindly donated art work, photography and sculptures for the event that took place in January. You name it, it was donated and all proceeds from the sales were presented to the chosen charity. Attendance to the event was exceptional and guests agreed there was no better way to spend an evening. Hull College student produces the winning design for The Association of Colleges Gold Awards 2016 A design by Hull College Art & Design student Abbie Nason was handpicked to be used as the trophies for the AOC Gold Awards, which recognise and celebrate the achievements of successful and influential people who have attended further education and sixth form colleges. The brief was to produce a unique design for a piece of ceramic art, with a focus on reflecting success, incorporation of Gold and a set of additional design specifications. The entries received very positive feedback from the team at AoC, with reports of quite a buzz in the office when the portfolio arrived, and during the Easter break, the message arrived that Abbie’s design had been selected and AoC would like her story. The challenge that followed was to translate from the design sheet and produce nine trophies to be awarded to winning students of 2016 from across the country. This presented a challenge for the Ceramics staff alongside Abbie, as delivering the trophies before the deadline, and to the exact standards

would prove to be a tough task. Abbie joined the Level 1 Art & Design course at Hull College in the Autumn Term 2014 after being home schooled for 18 months and leaving school with no formal qualifications. Her excellent attendance and achievement allowed her to be fast tracked to the first year of a Level 3 diploma in Fine Art. She has specialised within the Ceramics and Glass department, showing a high level of commitment and working with a team on a live project producing The Remarkable East Riding Tourism Awards. This included attending the awards dinner attended by over 500 guests and the chance to see people getting enjoyment out of the pieces of art they created. It was this whole experience that inspired Abbie to enter the Gold Awards when the opportunity came available, despite the hectic schedule already in place producing final pieces for the REYTA awards, but Abbie dedicated her extra time to complete a design sheet, combining wood, ceramics and fused glass.

Goole College hosts first Apprenticeship & Employers event On Wednesday 16th March, schools from around the region visited Goole College for their first Apprenticeship and Employers event. As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2016, the event saw the college filled with some of the biggest employers and recruiters from in and around Goole. This was the perfect opportunity for school pupils to come and speak directly to the organisations and get excellent advice and guidance on the kind of things employers are looking for, and tips on what to expect when they enter the world of work. HCUK Training were also on hand, giving regular talks about apprenticeships, and the benefits of choosing this route for those who feel they want to go straight into work while learning at the same time. We welcomed three schools from Beverley throughout the day, and it was an added pleasure to welcome pupils from neighbouring Goole Academy. During their visit they took part in group activities and walked away with lots of ideas about Apprenticeships, Traineeships and their chosen career paths. The event was fully backed by MP Andrew Percy and was well attended by employers too, with companies such as Croda, Howden’s Joinery, Drax and BMW, who also brought along a fleet of their exclusive high performance cars for the pupils to see. One of the highlights was the talks and demonstrations in our new Welding Workshop which proved immensely popular with the pupils, seeing them interact and ask lots of interesting questions about the facility. Principal Caron Wright said, “I just want to thank everyone who was involved in our first Apprenticeship event, including the high profile employers in the area who gave up their time to come in and support the college, and MP Andrew Percy for his support. It was a great opportunity to talk about Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Higher Apprenticeships. All of the visitors thoroughly enjoyed the event, taking part in lots of activities, while getting the chance to gain advice on their career development. We hope to be hosting the event again next year on the back of this success.”

Once-in-a-lifetime training opportunity for Culinary & Bricklaying students Two Hull College students are two out of just four cookery students in the UK who have embarked on a prestigious national training and development programme, where they will be trained by some of the best chefs in the world. Steve Lodge and Lorna Thompson secured coveted places on the Squad UK programme after they competed in, and placed highly, in the UK finals of WorldSkills, the UK’s largest skills and careers event. Taking place over an 18 month period, this bespoke programme will involve perfecting competitors’ chosen skills; testing them in specialities not done previously. Another Hull College

student, Josh Hunter, from the School of Construction & Green Energy Skills, will also be taking part on the programme in the Bricklaying category! Squad UK will form the lead up to Team

UK selection in 2017. If Steve, Lorna, or Josh secure a Team UK place, they will represent the UK at the International WorldSkills Competition at Abu Dhabi 2017.

Student to represent the UK at EuroSkills Gothenburg 2016 “Each of them truly reflects the high level of commitment, skill and progression that our students can achieve with Hull College. Many thanks must also go to the individual tutors who put in so many additional hours to ensure that they were well prepared for this, the most prestigious of skills competitions in the UK.”

There may be high hopes for our football teams in Euro 2016 this summer but for Josh Hunter, Bricklaying student from Hull College, there is only one European competition that matters, EuroSkills Gothenburg 2016. Taking place from 1 to 3 December, EuroSkills will see the most talented young people from over 30 European countries come together to compete in over 35 different skill areas ranging from engineering and construction through to creative and hospitality. The competitors all have one aim - to win a Gold medal in their chosen skill and prove they are the best in Europe. Gary Warke, Hull College Group Chief Executive said, “Hull College Group is proud to have achieved a successful run of winners in various skills competitions over the years, and the students taking part in this year’s WorldSkills contest are really carrying on this tradition in a big way.” “Skills contests not only showcase the talent and commitment of students, but also the hard work and effort that comes from the tutors to achieve these results.” “The high level of skill needed to succeed at WorldSkills really highlights that Hull College is at the forefront of specialist training and fulfilling the skill needs of the region for future generations.”

Similar to the footballers taking part in the Euros this summer, Josh, with other members of Team UK, will now go on to complete an intensive training programme, supported by their trainers, employers and training providers. “I would like to personally congratulate Josh on this impressive achievement and wish him well in the upcoming competition.” Graham Towse, Hull College Principal said: “We were absolutely delighted with Josh’s achievements at the WorldSkills UK competition, and this new announcement of his selection to represent the UK at EuroSkills 2016 really shows that his hard work has paid off.”

The competitors who take part in EuroSkills this year will also go on to compete for a place in the team that will represent the UK at WorldSkills, the largest international skills competition, which takes place every two years. The next WorldSkills Competition will take place in Abu Dhabi from 14 to 19 October, 2017.

“The College has a strong track record of producing national skills champions in a range of disciplines and we are so proud that Josh, and our other competing students currently in the selection process for WorldSkills, have successfully flown the flag for the City of Hull, the College and their respective trades.”

Harrogate College Photography student runner up in ILFORD Photo Competition Degree student Eleanor Shoesmith is studying in her first year of the BA (Hons) Photography course at Harrogate College. Eleanor came across the ILFORD Photo Competition, Best in Black and White, and jumped at the chance to enter. ILFORD Photo is ‘passionate about black and white’ and over their 130 year history, there has always been a positive commitment to this tradition. In 2015, they launched a competition called ‘Saturday Night at the Movies’ which received just under 1000 entries. Eleanor took her inspiration from the film American Sniper and used her partner who serves in the Army, to shoot a beautiful black and white image of an armed soldier pointing his gun straight at the lens of the camera. Eleanor’s image was shortlisted to the final judging and was placed as a runner up. Congratulations Eleanor!

Uniformed Public Services students successfully apply for North Yorkshire Special Constables Two students on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services course at Harrogate College have recently been successful in their initial applications to be Special Constables within North Yorkshire Police. The North Yorkshire Special Constables are a part time and voluntary service who work alongside the Police, doing a minimum of four hours per week. Special Constables are voluntary police officers with the same powers, uniform and responsibilities as paid police officers. They undergo an intensive training programme to prepare them for a challenging, demanding and varied role. Being a Special takes real dedication and commitment, requiring exceptional people who are looking to make a difference. Alex Hinchcliffe and Ben Hawkins are Level 3 students in their second year of studying at the college, and both are passionate about one day joining the Police Service. Alex said: “I’ve wanted to join the Police since I was really young so enrolling on the Uniformed Public Services course was a natural choice for me to be able to put my efforts in to achieving my goal, and I

16

really enjoy it! “ Alex plans to go to Manchester University to study Criminology upon completion of his Level 3 course, and join the Police service afterwards. However, Ben has already signed up for the North Yorkshire Special Constables. Ben said, “I applied early January as they were running a recruitment campaign that caught my eye. I heard that I’d been successful in the first stage of my application in February and I’m over the moon. Becoming a Special Constable is the best way for me to achieve my goal of becoming a full time Police Officer.” “My studies here will definitely help me to reach the Police force as we’re learning so many relevant skills. We even get to do riot training with the Police at their Wakefield training facility. I want to get as high up as I can in the service, trying out as much as possible to see which area I enjoy the most.” “I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be successful in joining the Special Constables, as it would be a fantastic way to work my way up to being in the Police.”

Hull College students design and make awards trophies Photograph credits left to right: Abbie Nasan, Caen Sigsworth, Loes Caplestone

This year marks the 7th year that Hull College students from the Ceramics and Glass department at Park Street have designed and produced the bespoke and unique REYTA trophies. Six students from the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fine Art course, led by Lynne Bennett, played a significant role in the project and the production of the pieces. The students worked within the specialist Ceramics facility with plenty of support from the ceramics team, the technician and lecturer and adult students from our 10 week classes. The print-making facility was also on hand to provide full support with the screen printing. All of the Level 3 students submitted designs for selection by VHEY (Visit Hull and East Yorkshire), and the winning entry came from Caen Sigsworth, aged 17. Caen’s design is based on a plant bulb form, with extending flowing leaf shapes, and the piece combines ceramic and kilnformed glass elements to striking effect. The idea behind the piece, following a brief supplied by REYTA, was to reflect the countryside and nature of East Yorkshire. This year, the work presented lots of tough technical and aesthetic challenges which all have striven to overcome. These challenges proved only to provide great benefits in terms of learning skills for the future, and the students will now be able to apply these to any future work and

within the workplace.

is due to take place over the summer.

The whole team hopes that the winners of the trophies enjoy them this year and it has been noted that some businesses now have a collection, awarded over several years! All of these are different in inspiration and appearance.

Course leader Nancy Pliener, the students and the teams involved with the project extend their thanks to VHEY for offering the project again, in particular to Paul Vinsen for his encouragement and excellent liaison.

It is noteworthy that this is the last year this live project will be undertaken at the established facility in Park Street, as the planned move to the Queen’s Gardens site

Josh was awarded with a certificate and silver medal, as well as a place on the honours list. This award is presented to those who are the best at their chosen profession. The company has been established for over 600 years and played a major part in the redevelopment of the city of London after the great fire of 1666. The event was held at the Trinity House in London, which is located on the banks of the River Thames, overlooked by Tower Bridge and the newest build in London, The Shard. Overseeing the proceedings was Mr Jeff Fuller, whose family has been involved with the company since the early 1700s.

Congratulating Josh on his achievement, Mr Fuller said, “Josh follows in the footsteps of a long line of bricklayers, whose name goes on the honours list and will be there for all to see for the next 600 years” On behalf of all the construction staff we would like to wish Josh all the best and every success as he competes to make the England world skills squad for Dubai 2017. Well done Josh.

Luke is also currently undertaking a public art commission with Associated British Ports where he is creating a sculpture for a public right of way known as the Transpennine Trail by Alexandra Dock as part of the Green Port Hull development.
