Welcome back!

Welcome back to a new year and new term. I hope you have had a great well-earned Christmas and New Year break.

Over the coming weeks the Strategic Leadership Team will be visiting all college sites to update colleagues on our key priorities for this term, as well as providing a forum to ask the team any questions. Please do make every effort to attend.

We are delighted to welcome Wheeler Primary to the HCUK MultiAcademy Trust from 1st January. This is our first primary school to join the Trust and we look forward to working closely with them in supporting pupils with a smooth transition to Sirius Academy.

Portal Press never ceases to amaze me with the fantastic accolades our staff and students achieve both inside and outside college. In the first part of the new year edition we reflect on some of these outstanding achievements as well as showcasing the continued excellent work.

It’s time to celebrate!

Let’s take a look at just some of the highlights from 2013...

Hull College recognised in national competition Hull College has been recognised for a national award for their innovative use of technology within Construction to aid students’ learning. The TES FE Awards celebrate excellence in Further Education and Hull College has been shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding use of technology in FE’ category.

Kick-started by a dynamic group of Hull College teachers from a range of specialisms, the College’s excellent use of technology is demonstrated through a series of short films designed to engage, encourage and help students further understand the courses that they are taking.

Students have the opportunity to access and develop a variety of film resources via Hull College’s Virtual Learning Environment.

Students can access the footage on site, in their workshops and through their mobile devices whether they are at home or on the move.

From fitting skirting boards, making a window frame or constructing a new roof, the film shows a variety of both staff and students completing practical tasks which assist in the development of practical skills in workshops or on site. The resource

complements the teaching of theory during classroom sessions through evaluation of skills and knowledge demonstrated.

Dotted about the College are special check points with QR codes which give access to a film. All a student needs to do is hold their mobile phone to the code in order to view it.

Students also have the opportunity to film themselves completing practical tasks where they can they reflect and analyse their own performance, further enhancing the learning experience. Once they are at an employability level, students can share footage of themselves working on tasks and show potential employers the extent of their skills.

Hull College Principal Graham Towse said: “This is another way in which Hull College is ensuring that students get the best from their education and learn in interesting, innovative ways. Hull College thinks about the future of its students very carefully and this is fed into the design of the courses and the dynamics of the classroom. The College understands that not everybody learns in the same way and film is an incredible powerful tool for teaching and in particular practical elements of a subject.”

Talented Hull College students win awards at national skills competition Three Hull College students have won prestigious awards at the WorldSkills UK National Competition at The Skills Show.

Arron Penn, 23, from Hull College, employed by Sodexho, has been named the ‘Best in the UK’ after winning a Gold medal for confectionary and patisserie.

Connor Cutsforth, 20, a brickwork student at Hull College and employed by Beal Construction, won Bronze for his brickwork while Tom Dixon, 21, also a brickwork student at Hull College and employed by Redrow Construction, was ‘highly commended’.

WorldSkills UK Competitions inspire young people and adults to be ambitious in their pursuit of skills to the highest level. The Competitions are the highlight of The Skills Show, the UK’s largest skills and careers event, which took place from 14 - 16 November at the NEC Birmingham.

Over 800 of the UK’s most talented apprentices and learners battled it out in 70 competitions ranging from Floristry to Mechanical Engineering to be named the ‘best in the UK’ in their chosen skill.

Entering the WorldSkills UK competitions is proven to catapult a person’s career. Taking part enables competitors to build on their skills, test their knowledge against their peers in industry and showcase their potential to employers.

Keith Smith, Director, The Skills Funding Agency and UK Official Delegate to WorldSkills International said: “I offer my congratulations to Arron Penn, Connor Cutsforth

and Tom Dixon. It takes hard work, determination and a high level of skill to compete against the UK’s most talented apprentices and learners.

By holding the WorldSkills UK National Competition Finals at The Skills Show we can showcase and celebrate the high levels of talent entering the UK’s workforce.”

Using hands-on experiences, The Skills Show inspires young people to reconsider the opportunities available to them, as well as providing information and advice from employers and careers advisers to spark the imagination and turn ideas about potential work opportunities into reality.

Hull College Confectionery student and WorldSkills gold medal winner, Arron Penn said: “I’m overwhelmed with the gold medal but I was confident that my tutor and mentor had trained me to the standard which would bring the College success.” Arron has also been invited to join the National skills Academy operated under the Craft Guild of Chefs.

Hull College Principal Graham Towse said: “On behalf of Hull College I would like to congratulate these three gentlemen on their great successes; we are very proud of the results they have achieved and I have no doubt that a successful future lies in store for them. The competition is a valuable tool for demonstrating the talent of the students but also allowing the students to test themselves against their peers.”

Philip Dixon and Charlotte Neve win awards Chef lecturers Philip Dixon and cake decorating lecturer competed at the Cake International convention held at Manchester Gmex on Saturday 9 November. ‘Cake International’ is a world renowned exhibition which showcases innovation and design within the Industry.

Philip Dixon achieved a gold Medal for his design in pulled and poured sugar work and Charlotte Feve achieved Bronze Medal.

Student secures coveted college place Health and Social Care student Alia Abdulla secured a place at the highly-respected King’s College London after achieving outstanding results.

Alia initially struggled with gaining a place at a college as she was a carer for her father and didn’t have the necessary GCSE requirements. After interview at Hull College, Alia was accepted onto Level 3 Health & Social Care where she flourished.

Whilst caring for her father, Alia completed the second year of Level 3 Health & Social Care and achieved D* across the board. During this time Alia also achieved Level 1 Sign Language.

Alia still keeps in touch with her tutors at the College. She told her tutor Lorraine McCleavy: “Studying health and social care with childhood studies has helped me to achieve my goal of going to university to study children’s nursing. The course covers all aspects of both health and social care with modules that provide the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in specialised fields. Placement provides you with the opportunity to put what you have learnt in the classroom into practice and has allowed me to recognise what field of health care I want to go into, as well as my strengths and what skills I still need to develop. The tutors on the course are extremely supportive and they have a wealth of knowledge and experience, which is reflected in their teaching. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on this course and I am grateful for the opportunities it has opened up for me.”

7 Public Service students deployed as stewards for Rugby League World Cup fixture

Eight Level 1 Public Service students were part of the huge logistics operation at the England Rugby League World Cup Fixture at the KC Stadium on Saturday; Amber Johnson, Luke Skoyles, Reece Byford, Billy Taylor, Daniel Crabbe, Charlotte Sylvester, Mattise Spraudis and Luke Milkamanavicius.

The students arrived at the KC Stadium at 11:30 am to prepare for the crucial England V Fiji World Cup group game which was a sell-out capacity crowd. The students were given their uniforms and their ‘Steward Buddy’ at the team briefing.

Each student was then allocated a section of the stadium to look after. During the game students were required to show fans to their seating, assist in any emergency situations, as well as dealing with any problems directly with the fans.

The students were also involved in the exiting procedure at the end of the game and finally finished their shift at 5:00pm. Course Leader Julie Duffy contacted the Stadium Management Team directly to enquire whether the students

could assist at a game as a part of their work placement, which the students can evidence, in their Progression Passport.

The students have also been offered the opportunity to assist again at a Premier League game for Hull City, in the New Year, as well as being advised by Chris Casey (Stadium Manager) to apply for part-time positions in February.

KC Stadium Manager Chris Casey said: “All the students were ambassadors for Hull College as well as the KC Stadium; they were very professional throughout the day and were a credit to their tutor.”

Level 1 Course leader Julie Duffy commented: “This was a valuable opportunity to gain work experience in a high profile situation where the students had to rise to the challenge.

Saturday was a great experience and gave the students the opportunity to directly improve their employability and hopefully gain paid employment.”

Level 3 students come third at Global Entrepreneurship Week Tensions were running high at the Post 16 Global Enterprise Challenge, where a multi-disciplinary team comprising of business and computing students were delighted to be awarded third place for their new product idea, winning £150.

Held at Hull University, a total of 22 teams from around the county including three from Hull College Group competed in an Enterprise Competition.

Compered by Ruth Badger, formerly on BBC1’s business reality television series, The Apprentice, each team was given an object with the challenge to innovate a new product which might be used to help celebrate the successful bid to become City of Culture 2017. Teams needed to create a product name, identify their target market, identify the features of the product, devise a pricing structure and then sell the idea to a judging panel. Six teams were then chosen to pitch their ideas.

Their idea for a “We are Hull - City of Culture” display stand, to be placed outside domestic properties, public buildings and businesses was born from the object they were given – a Christmas tree stand. Ruth Badger commented that it was the first time she had seen a team manage to come up with a use which didn’t involve alcohol - most teams had previously come up with the idea of a cocktail mixer!

The participants also had the opportunity to hear from Andrew Dixon, the head of the bidding team for the City of Culture, who described the epic journey they had had in putting the bid together as well as hearing from two young entrepreneurs who described their personal routes to success, including Amanda Hartley, who, completed a part-time business course at Hull College and now owns her own floristry business.

Hull College apprentice wins prestigious award

Former Hull College photography marketing apprentice and student, Tom Arran, has won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for his business, Tom Arran Photography. Tom said: “Winning Hull Young Entrepreneur of the year is a great boost! It will provide substantial support for my business and deliver additional exposure of my services. Hull College has always been a great support towards my business; the College’s Net315 programme assisted me in setting up my business, so it is great to see them nominated. My prize includes marketing mentoring from Ruth Badger Consultancy and a free office space for six months which will enable me to expand my business.” Hull College’s Net315 programme was also shortlisted for the category, Hull-based companies/organisations that have done the most to promote an enterprising culture in the city, in the Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2013.

The Net315 programme was created to support the development of a sense of enterprise within the Hull College curriculum and to enable more students to develop business ideas and launch their own enterprise successfully.

Net315 programme project manager Nigel Dakin said: “Having an idea is one thing. Being prepared to put in the effort to turn the idea into a business is another thing altogether. Net315 has helped dozens of students think through the practical realities of turning ideas into business. Being able to show students how to set up their businesses and access the skills and knowledge of the College and its business partners has made the difference. Instead of just talking to students with dreams we’ve been delighted to support the start-up of 40 businesses, with 20 powering through their first year – a great contribution to the local economy and a sure sign of how important it is to support youthful entrepreneurs.” Ruth Badger, BBC Apprentice star, businesswoman and Patron of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said: “It is always a pleasure and a privilege to support Hull in the way it supports its enterprising young people, your city and Council certainly believes in putting its energies behind its young people and not just paying lip service to enterprise. The work that partners are doing in your city is absolutely brilliant.”

Ceramics students design glass trophies Business Awards Hull College students celebrated a sparkling success along with the winners of the Mail and News Media Business Awards, as trophies, designed by the students, were given to 14 category winners plus a lifetime contribution award.

Made from kiln-fired ceramic base and coloured glass top, a group of students from the glass and ceramics department at Park Street designed award trophies for the Mail News and Media Business Awards. Designing the awards has enhanced the students’ portolios and draws attention to the talent nurtured at Hull College.

Ceramics and glass course leader, Nancy Pliener told the Hull Daily Mail: “The awards are a great opportunity for students to promote their work. We were delighted to be asked to be part of the awards again and so were the students.”

The design process began earlier in the term with initial designs pitched to both Ms Pliener and

ceramic technician Emma Harmes. Tow designs were chosen before prototypes were created and submitted to the Mail where it was decided that both designs were going to be used.

Ms Pliener continued: “This is one of a very few facilities of its kind in the region and it is great that Hull College can offer that.”

Now in their 13th year, the Mail News and Media Business Awards celebrate companies who contribute to East Yorkshire’s economy.

Neil Hodgkinson, editor of the Hull Daily Mail, said: “The Hull College trophies are a credit to design students. They are elegant, unique and a fantastic additional touch of quality that, hopefully, will be a great reminder of a successful evening for the winners.”

The students have also been asked to design the trophies for the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards (REYTA).

Hull College Apprentice Luke Graves wins runner up at NEF Innovation Awards

Hull College Apprentice Luke Graves, 22, has been announced as ‘Innovative Apprentice of the Year’ runner up at the prestigious NEF Innovation Awards.

Established to recognise and celebrate the very best in UK innovation, the Innovation Awards provide an opportunity for individuals and organisations to celebrate their innovation and gain recognition for the role they play in inspiring and motivating others.

Luke’s work at Total Lindsey Oil Refinery earned him this special commendation which was received from TeenTech CEO and BBC journalist, presenter and broadcaster Dr Maggie Philbin at the NEF’s ‘Innovisions’ conference.

One of the first cohort of Process Technology apprentice, Luke excelled in his apprenticeship at Total Lindsay Oil Refinery where he was instrumental in identifying several process problems at the refinery. Reports from the refinery highlighted Luke’s technical ability and excellent safety awareness and he was praised for preventing substantial losses.

Luke’s hard work has been rewarded as he is now a full-time employee with the company.

The winners across eight categories were decided by a panel of industry experts, influencers and leaders including the award sponsors EMC, BASF, The Chemical Company, National Grid and EDF Energy.

Describing the judging process Professor Sa’ad Medhat NEFs CEO said: “The winners were chosen due to their clarity of intended purpose, uniqueness of approach, potential impact, and whether they stimulated and galvanised others. They demonstrated economic value and social benefit, which will help promote sustainable growth in the UK.”

Students raise £1,300 for charity Hull College Degree students studying Business & Management, Travel & Tourism Management, Computing and Sport presented a cheque for £1,000 to Macmillan Cancer support at a celebration event following their hugely successful ‘Charity Showcase’ event held at St Stephen’s shopping centre.

Altogether the students raised just under £1,300 on the day, £300 of which was been donated to the Children’s Centre to buy Christmas presents for the children. Not ones to miss an opportunity to raise more money, the students performed a charity sponsored leg waxing on construction lecturer Dave Barley at the celebration event and raised an extra £150. Each student that helped with the Charity Showcase received a certificate of excellence in recognition of all their hard work and they should all be really proud of the dedication and commitment that they showed in raising money for such worthy causes.

£73.00 raised during Health & Well-being Week Fundraiser As part of Health & Well-being students were questioned about what makes them feel good. Cache Childcare Level 1 Group 2 said that helping others made them feel good. They decided to spend the lesson fundraising for Kingsmill Special School. Kingsmill provides education and residence to children with severe disabilities from age two to 19 years old. The class divided into teams and was set the challenge of selling as many raffle tickets and chocolate spoons as they could in one hour. The funds raised will go towards supporting a trip out for children from the school.

HSAD students showcase work at Platform Expos 2013 Third year BA (Hons) Game Design students, Stevy Southwick and Joe Steele, have recently been seen showcasing a project at the recent biggest gaming event in the North East, Platform Expos. Working within an indie development team based in the Platform Studios in Hull, The Gnome Factory, the pair have recently been working on a game called Gnome Way Out. Gnome Way Out sees the player taking control over a garden gnome who has to defend himself against incoming hordes of garden rodents. Showing great signs of potential and commitment; Joe, Stevy and the rest of the team were invited to showcase their game at the recent Platform Expos in Hull City Centre.

“Showing our game at the Platform Expo was a major opportunity for us as a small Indie development team. Not only did we get to show it off to the public and receive valuable feedback, but we also were able to expand our social network by meeting other talented indie developers and developers from major game companies like Jagex. It has also led on to other great opportunities for us as a team,” said Stevy.

Joe highlighted the importance of carrying out personal work outside of the college boundaries, “For Me and Stevy, this goes to show that doing extra work on top of your course work really does pay off. This really is the first steps for us for promoting our work and

hopefully lining ourselves up for employment opportunities in the future. Showcasing our game at Platform Expo has placed us in the public eye, being featured in the Hull Daily Mail, and also set us up for other opportunities like App Campus.”

Soon after the Platform Expo was finished, The Gnome Factory’s founder Josh Naylor asked Stevy and Joe if they would like to pitch their project at App Campus. App Campus is an event run by Microsoft and Nokia which gives developers the chance to present their ideas with the hope of gaining substantial funding and support from the two major companies. Jumping at the opportunity, Joe and Stevy travelled to Manchester alongside the other team members to pitch their idea.

After a long, nerve racking day, the team managed to secure 20,000 euros to support the development of Gnome Way Out. The variety of opportunities available to creatives in the Humber area is growing steadily. With the recent announcement of Hull as the UK’s next city of culture, Hull is ready to become the centre of the creative economy in the North East and with opportunities such as Platform Studios there is more than enough room for aspiring games designers in the area.

One of best opportunities to come and discover the local games design scene is to attend the Global Game Jam in January.

The game jam is a 48 hour long event where competing teams work against the clock to build a simple game based on a pre-decided theme, the next one to be held on 24th-26th January.

Contestants work throughout the night to finish their game before the time is up. Anyone is welcome, from designers and programmers to musicians, animators and even spectators.

BA students mural

The second year BA (hons) Illustration students were given the fantastic opportunity to paint a mural in the foyer of the performing arts building at High Street. Their brief was simply ‘Performance’ and students were asked to explore what that meant in the context of the Performing Arts programmes at HSPA,

with a view to try to capture all their diversity and range, drawing inspiration from cinema, music, theatre and dance. The students hoped to create a space that would excite and inspire all who walk through the door, and through the space, give a taste of the creativity and spirit that permeates throughout the School.

Student in the press Sophie Kitching, a final year BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media student, has been snapped up by local newspaper, Hull Daily Mail.

While completing her degree at Hull College, Sophie is working several days a week as a production trainee. Her big break came after she was commissioned by the Hull Daily Mail to produce 24 one-minute videos for the Pride of East Yorkshire Awards over summer 2013.

Sophie spent a busy summer travelling around East Yorkshire, interviewing the 24 finalists and shooting and editing the videos, which were shown at the awards ceremony.

The BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media degree provides students with a range of skills which will give them the best chance of employment or self-employment in today’s multimedia journalism environment. While students learn essential skills in newswriting for print, online and broadcast, they also study video, digital imaging and web design. Sophie has put her skills into practice during the many periods of work experience she has undertaken in local and community radio and TV news.

All the hard work has paid off as Sophie has secured her first foothold on a career in journalism. Sophie said: “Since starting my degree I have worked hard to build up my portfolio and contacts. This is something I’ve done through work experience but also through the strong links my degree has with professionals in the industry. The variety of subjects and topics covered meant that I was able to establish a wide set of skills - something which is invaluable in a newsroom today.”

Ian Bond, Hull Daily Mail Design Editor is managing Sophie. He said: “Sophie is a rising star and doing so well in such a short space of time. She has settled into the team brilliantly. Her talent and enthusiasm is really starting to show. Sophie really stood out on a project we were involved in with the College, which made me think about her when hiring new staff, so if you work hard you never know when your next job might come from. We hope to support her through the rest of her course and look forward to her joining us full-time next year.

Sophie will also be accompanying a gathering of local and national journalists and broadcasters at the BA (Hons) Journalism and Digital Media Journalism Day 2014 at Hull Truck Theatre to round off the programme by talking about her experiences. She’s a great role model and proof that ambition, determination and hard work really do pay off.”

HE students return to HC! Pete Kemp and Rob Smith (pictured, front) were students on the BCPE’s Next Gen computing course, finishing in July 2013. Now they are on the first year of Higher Education (HE). They took time out from their busy academic schedule to visit the second year Next Gen students, some of whom will be progressing onto HE in 2014.

Pete demonstrated some of the code he has been working on, in C#, for which he received a first class mark, and Rob talked the group through the maths that is required at level 4. They were able to offer useful advice to the year two Next Gen students and give them a flavour of student life at HE level.

Amanda Bird, the programming tutor said: ”I’m very pleased that Rob and Pete were able to come in and talk to the current year 2 students. Hopefully, it will inspire our Next Gen year 2 and make them realise how important it is to use the last few months at Hull College fully!”

Perfect pancakes to help the Philippines

Level 2 students serve up pancakes on two days to raise funds for the Philippines Disaster Relief Fund.

The Level 2 BTEC IT students in group A got together to raise funds for charity. They came up with the idea of delicious, warm pancakes with a glorious range of toppings. Customers could choose from fresh fruit or more indulgently cream with chocolate buttons! They were served by cheerful students wearing tasteful (?) Christmas jumpers!

On the second day, the group also delivered custom-topped pancakes to desks for peckish staff. They worked hard but business was slow. Not to worry – they will be back in the new year with more fund-raising ideas! Amanda Bird, their tutor, said: “They worked hard and did really well. We think we might try smoothies next time!”

HCUK Student chosen for National Theatre placement One of Technical and Theatre Production students has just qualified for a placement with the National Theatre in London. They have hundreds of applicants each year, interview the best candidates then offer only a few select people placements with their various theatre teams. Anna Horwell, one of our third years got down to the interview stage and was informed yesterday that she has been successful. She will undertake her placement for three weeks in April 2014 with the Production Team.

Christmas Hampers for people in the local community As a community project, two groups of Foundation Learning students in Harrogate made Christmas Hampers for people in the local community.

The students delivered the cakes to the collection point where they were gratefully received. The students have learnt different skills and the importance of thinking of others who are less fortunate than themselves.

Harrogate College Christmas Service Harrogate College’s first ever Christmas Service took place in the last week of term and was hailed a great success. The service was organised by The Enrichment Team with the help of Reverend Helen Bailey, and told the traditional Christmas story with some light hearted celebration thrown in for an enjoyable service for all! Acts included a Christmas Medley & a duet from Performing Arts students, a Christmas song & video complied

by Tutor Peter beck & his band and Student Union VP Rebekah Lleweyn’s take on funny Christmas traditions around the world. With mince pies baked by the Catering students on offer to attract the crowds, the service ran smoothly and Julie Stephenson commented ‘it’s the start of a new tradition!’ Rev. Helen Bailey said ‘it’s a fantastic thing to be a part of, and a lovely way to finish the term and remember the real Christmas story’.

thank all staff, students and visitors for their support in making this event a success, and are looking forward to bigger and better things in 2014.

Young chef competition Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland believes it is highly important to encourage and develop creativity in young people, and this includes creativity in the kitchen. Cooking amongst young people is a growing interest and a valuable life skill. Schools seem to agree and hence the RIBI Young Chef competition, in association with Filippo Berio, moves forward from strength to strength each year producing some superb quality cooking from our young people aged from 11 to 17.

Locally on Saturday 7th December 2013 the Rotary Clubs of Hull, Hull Kingston and Hull Paragon joined together with Hull College to run a Rotary Club Young Chef competition for a second year for schools in Hull and East Riding. The competition took place in the catering department at Hull College supported by Head of Curriculum for Catering, Bernard McCoy. We were honoured to have Roy Woodcock, Editor of the Holderness Gazette and respected commentator on food and wine, together with Hull College catering professional David Beckett and Janet Drewery from Rotary Club of Hull, as judges. The contestants prepared and presented their three course meals in under two hours (mouth-watering menus given below) and all stages were monitored and scored by our three judges. The contestants worked very hard and made a good impression on the judges and Rotary members attending

the event, who were soon keen to sample the well-presented food.

The contestants were very proud of their achievements and received a comprehensive round up of their culinary skills together with valuable feedback from judge David Beckett.

Following District Assistant Governor, John Curry’s a vote of thanks to the contestants, teachers, judges and organisers, Bernard McCoy made the presentations of a certificate and cookery book for each competitor and prizes of £50 and £25 for 1st and 2nd places respectively.

We are grateful to the Hull and East Riding Hospitality Association (HEYHA) and the Association Culinaire Francaise Hull & East Riding Branch for sponsorship of these prizes and awards.

In addition, Hull College have sponsored both prize winners to a coaching session in the Hull College kitchens plus an experience in their own Restaurant, Charlotte’s, which will help them prepare for the 2nd stage, the District Final, being held in Grimsby on 11th January.
