The story of Matilda Wormwood is a kind of Cinderella story. But instead of triumphing over her mean step-family by being good, kind and marrying a prince, Matilda succeeds in overcoming her indifferent family and mean headmistress by being mostly good, kind, and reading books. She is exceptional, but also normal. Her mind is powerful, and as a result her sense of what is right and fair comes naturally. This story was written by Roald Dahl before the advent of computers and smart phones. At that time the screens that absorbed our minds were mostly on televisions or as the British call them, tellys. Now with social media, and many more screens to entice us, we may lose our important relationship with reading books and the blessings they bring to our growth. It is my hope that this does not happen.
After 22 years of producing or co-producing HCT’s big fall musical, I am handing in my broom. Producing a play on Kauai is more about cleaning up then dressing up and walking the red carpet! But I am committed to this wonderful organization in order to continue its unique work on Kauai. I would like to thank this cast, crew, and their families and friends for giving their time and talents to this production. Everything about it was difficult; the script, the music, the choreography and the staging. Their focus and hard work came together to become the wonderful show you will see. I would also like to thank you, the audience, for your participation. It would not be a show without you! Please continue to support Hawaii Children’s Theatre however you can.

Aloha and mahalo for joining the members of the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre as they bring to life “Matilda the Musical” for our family and friends here on the Garden Isle.
There are so many lasting benefits of creative arts and education, especially in the development of our youth. I have personally seen how music and creative expression can transform a person’s attitude and mindset. Supporting our keiki and providing them with a positive outlet through the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre truly puts them on a path toward success.
That’s why I am so grateful to our Kaua‘i community for supporting the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre year after year, which allows our keiki the opportunity to showcase their talent, passion, and individuality.
On behalf of the County of Kaua‘i, I extend my sincerest mahalo to the attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and all who have contributed to the success of this grand production. Your support enables the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre to continue its outstanding work, providing an incredible experience that leaves a lasting impression for all involved.
Best wishes to all, and enjoy the show!
With warmest aloha,
Derek S. K. Kawakami Mayor, County of Kaua‘iLove, Mom and Dad
The sky is the limit! We are so proud of you.
When I saw Matilda on Broadway a few years ago, I was totally inspired! I cried, laughed, got angry, was amazed and totally blown away by this wonderful musical. So much of this show is magical, not just the special effects, but the magical way in which Matilda inspires everyone around her. Being able to present this show to you here on Kaua‘I through Hawaii Children’s Theatre is a dream come true and I hope we inspire and amaze you with our production.
We are so blessed to have a fabulous cast including 2 wonderful Matildas. My production team, I call my dream team, is mostly made up of the amazingly talented team we had for our production of Mary Poppins back in 2015. Steve and Sam Whitney pulled off some incredible things back then but they have gone above and beyond for this show! That incredible arch you see around the stage is just a piece of the magic that has been brought to you by Steve Whitney. I am so grateful to Steve and Sam for being a very big part of the team this year. Besides Steve and Sam, we have an all-star production team who were truly a dream to work with and their work is equally magical! I want to thank them all – Donnie Maione who built most of our sets, Brenda Biehler – props, Bobbee Downs – hair and make-up, Franceska & Kimberly Formanova – costumes, Jarhett Gaines & Wayne Zebzda who made some very special items for this show, Ken Schmidt for his video work, Dolly Kanekuni for vocal coaching our cast, and Holly Rudinoff who painted everything to perfection! And a very special thank you to Ethan Whatmore, my assistant choreographer, who helped me immensely before he left for college.
A very special Mahalo to Debra Blachowiak for all her years producing our shows. You are very much appreciated!
This show called for some special vaulting and I want to thank with a huge Mahalo Jack and Kay Leonard (Kauai Gymnastics Academy) for stepping in and giving lessons to our cast for this section and then coming to assist us working with our set. Their contribution made a huge difference to this special scene. We couldn’t have done it without them!!
We have a few people wearing more than 1 hat for this production, they are Alan Van Zee, our wonderful musical director and conductor who has also been our British accent coach, Erin Gaines who plays Miss Honey in the show and is our production office manager, Jacob Lester who is one of the Big Kids in the show and also my dance captain, and Taj Gutierrez who plays Trunchbull and was my right arm throughout as my rehearsal stage manager. Thank you all big time for all your work!! You three made rehearsals go smoothly and helped me so much!
Once we prepared to move to the theatre, another team of people were added headed by production stage manager, Bailey Hutton, who I am so grateful to for joining us again this year! I want to thank the entire backstage team for all their hard work. And a big Mahalo to our orchestra!
Of course, we could not have done it without the help of many parents, thank you all! A special thank you to Amy Winters, Ann Williamson, Charlotte Liddell and Marjorie Wartman for coming to our rescue with sewing! A special thank you to my life partner, Jeff, for his unwavering support as I spent long hours on this production.
Thank you for seeing our show and supporting live theatre on Kauai! We hope you enjoy it and are inspired to tell your friends to come!!

Matilda was first commissioned and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 9 November 2010. It transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in the West End of London on 25 October 2011 and received its US premiere at the Shubert Theatre, Broadway, USA on 4 March 2013.
Everyone associated with Matilda would like to thank Loren Kayfetz and Pat Pannell for their very generous donation that allowed us to build and decorate a new proscenium arch. With no main curtain used in the staging of this show, we are all very fortunate to be able to let our creativity flow and be seen through this beautiful piece.
Matilda and her classmates and their parents would like to thank Eddie Beetschen and Mark Wagner for their support in building the school gates and entrance. Starting first grade can be intimidating at Crunchem Hall.
Headmistress Agatha Trunchbull loves her school gym. Gymnastics is her thing! She would like to thank Kauai Community Players for the gym and all that ultimately goes on in there!
And besides marching to the gymnastic orders of Ms. Trunchbull, all the kids are happy to play and swing on the playground. The big and little kids would like to thank Bank of Hawaii for their support. Swings are fun, no matter how old you are!
Miss Jenny Honey and her class love their classroom. There is lots of room to draw on the chalk board too! They would like to thank Elizabeth Kraftician for her continued support of our creative pursuits.
Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, and of course Matilda, would like to thank Lappert’s Ice Cream for their support in creating the library. Both of them love books and stories and they want you to think of the next book you want to read when you are eating your ice cream!
Matilda’s family spends a lot of time in their living room in front of the telly and so they are thankful to Kukui’ula Development for the Wormwood rooms. Matilda has her own bedroom where she can read to her heart’s content.
Headmistress Agatha Trunchbull needs her office to admire her trophies, watch the monitors and dream up her revenge on the kids. She keeps the Chokey there out of sight but everyone knows its there. A small cage for naughty children who won’t be able to sit down because of the spikes on the bottom. Even though she is mean, she wants to thank Oceanfront Sotheby’s International Realty for her special place.
Every kid loves his or her birthday party. Birthday kids are special. It’s Matilda’s birthday but her parents are missing. But thanks to Hawaii Volcanic Water, it’s a good birthday after all!
Our Director and Technical Director want to thank Ron and Claudia Hill, Ron Horoshko and Mona Clark and AV Kauai for their support that allowed her to have what she wanted: this unique stage design, special moving lights, fantastic projections and all the other fun technical and special effects for Matilda the Musical.
