Duncan Sheik (Music) In addition to writing the music for Spring Awakening, which received a critically acclaimed Lincoln Center American Songbook Concert staging, Grammy award nominated singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik collaborated with Playwright Steven Sater on The Nightingale, a musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen classic which premiered during the 26th annual O’Neill Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Sheik has composed original music for the Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night and for The Golden Rooms of Nero, which recently debuted at Cornell University and opened at the Magic Theater in San Francisco earlier this year. His self-titled debut album, which was an enormous popular and critical success, introduced the hit singles “Barely Breathing” and “She Runs Away,” and spent 30 weeks on the Billboard 200. Other albums include “Humming,” “Daylight,” “Phantom Moon” with lyrics by Steven Sater and his latest, “White Limousine”, which was released in January of 2006. Film Soundtracks: Great Expectations, The Saint, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Three to Tango, What a Girl Wants, Transamerica and A Body Goes Down. Sheik recently composed and produced the original score for the feature film “A Home at the End of the World”, directed by Michael Mayer and starring Colin Farrell. Sheik has teamed up with Sater and Waitress librettist Jessie Nelson on the new musical Alice By Heart, making its debut at MCC Theater in New York City in January of 2019. He is also collaborating with Pulitzer and Tony-winning playwright Lynn Nottage on a musical adaptation of The Secret Life of Bees, which will begin performances at the Atlantic Theater Company in May of 2019.

Simon Hale (String Orchestrations) After graduating from the University of London with an honors degree in composition, Simon Hale’s acclaimed solo album, East Fifteen, led to recordings with many artists, including George Benson, Simply Red, Jamiroquai and Björk. In 1996 he orchestrated Duncan Sheik’s first album, and their musical collaboration has continued ever since. Simon’s involvement with Spring Awakening marked his Broadway debut and the Tony Award for Best Orchestrations in 2007. He continues to work with Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik on other projects. Monica Chung...The woman who made it happen. Words can’t begin to describe how blessed I am to have the opportunity to work and create alongside you and your infinite wisdom. Thank you for sticking by my side through the difficult times and raising me up during the good. Truly, I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in crime.
I want to thank my parents for being so accepting of who I am, and teaching me the art of love. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them, and I can’t wait to teach their many lessons to the youth that come into my life. I love you both so much.
My Cast. Man. Aren’t they just stellar? Just some of Kauai’s best. You’re all so beautiful inside and out. Thank you for believing in my craziness and hanging in there through it all. I couldn’t have done it without you.
Finally, I’d like to thank HCT for taking a chance on me and this show. In my opinion, it takes a strong and courageous theatre company to put on a show as controversial as SpringAwakening in such a small community. I applaud HCT for being the first on Kaua’i to do so. It makes me proud to be associated with such a brave theater company.
Alright! Without further ado….SPRINGAWAKENING , a tragedy of adolescence, which has opened my eyes to the sensitive truth of human emotion and psychology. It has shown and confirmed that so much of who we are result from the adults that brought us up. While this may seem like an attack on adults, it is not. People pass on what they were taught. Rather than pass judgment on others’ knowledge, we can instead ask what they are willing to change.
This show is written to be provocative. It is meant to spark a conversation in our community. At times, it may make an audience member feel uncomfortable, and that’s exactly how they should feel. Looking in a mirror isn’t always easy, but it’s the only way to see the change we want to make. My goal for this production is to have people look inside themselves, and assure themselves that they are leading the life they want to lead in a society that they want to live in.
If you are watching this production, I encourage you to keep an open mind. See and accept the beauty and the ugliness of the young and the old. Go out into the world and spread love, knowledge, and acceptance. Thank you and enjoy the show.

The Kaua`i Resilience Project is a bold community initiative to build our young people’s ability to overcome adversity and successfully navigate life’s challenges so they can lead enriched, fulfilled and purposeful lives. There is a quiet crisis among our island youth. 9% of Kaua`i high school students attempted suicide last year. 28% of our young people reported feeling sad or worthless for extended periods of time. We want to change that.

You may have seen me in: Shrek (Pinocchio), Spamalot (Laker Girl/Voice of God), LuckyStiff (Annabel Glick), ThePlightbeforeChristmas (Felicity), and Dog sees God (Van’s sister). I’ve also done backstage work: Spotlight Operator for MaryPoppins, and Stage Manager for Next to Normal and The Rainmaker. My performance is dedicated to my daughter Stella- You are my inspiration, motivation and purpose. I look forward to the day we can share the stage together! And to my best friend Daphne Sanchez- You have been my rock during my darkest days. Thank you for bringing me back to earth when I was stuck in the clouds. Love you no homo!

Yellow! My name is Sabryn (Billy) Rudinoff. I’ve been performing in HCT shows since I was 10 years old. This community has helped me grow to be the actress, singer, and person I am today. I am so proud to be in the production of SpringAwakening and hope that it provides a conversation in the community of Kauai.
Rayna Shafter
Rayna, a sophomore at Island School and clearly a theatre fanatic, is super excited to be a part of her first After Dark Show! When she’s not at school, Rayna spends her time taking piano lessons from Monica Chung, singing her heart out, or going to the beach with friends. You may have seen her perform as Belle in HCT’s BeautyandtheBeast,JR. as well as Elsa from HCT’s Frozen, JR. Most recently, she played Gabby in an original WIT production called 4,3,2, Gun! Other favorites include SweeneyTodd, Newsies, and 12 Angry Men. Despite these peculiar times, Rayna feels very blessed to be part of a show during COVID!
Jessika Montoya-Cristobal
Jessika has been an avid member of the theatre community for the past 8 years and is so glad to be on stage again playing the role of Ilsa. After playing countless roles on our local stages Jessika has been cast with the most important role of them all, motherhood. Her daughter Lily has been loving singing with her mama and helping her go over lines. Shout out to her awesome husband Sean for taking on all of the daddy duties at home while she gets to play with her friends again. An awesome birthday present that’s for sure.

Isaac Dubey
I know Billy through my cousin’s mother in law’s parrot’s hair dresser. We’re very close. I started doing theatre when I was eight years old in HCT’s Summer Stars production of BugsyMalonejr. I have done KPAC and HCT shows ever since. Some of my favorite shows I’ve done are Newsies, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and
Seussical. These experiences helped me discover how much I love, not only bonding between castmates, but also the emotional, musical, and physical expression involved in a musical production as an actor. Although SpringAwakening is a different kind of musical, I’m very excited to present this show to the public.

Dottie Bekeart has been acting on Kauai for more years than she cares to admit. Among her favorite roles are Mrs. Lovett in SweeneyTodd, Mrs. Hannigan in Annie, Anna in TheKingandI, Polly in Other Desert Cities and Miss Helen in Road to Mecca. She finds playing the five roles in SpringAwakening to be an interesting challenge and being part of Taj Gutierrez’ directing debut to be an honor.

Hello! SpringAwakening is a musical I always believed I would never get an opportunity to be a part of and now I have the blessing to be in this wonderful show with these amazingly talented creators! Some of my past theater experiences include Lizzie Curry (The Rainmaker), Sylvia (Sylvia), Kate Monster (Avenue Q) and Desdemona (Othello). When I’m not on stage you can find me either teaching theatre arts or directing a show. I have directed for HCT Summer Stars since 2014, as well as, MontyPython’s Spamalot (HCT After Dark, 2016), LittleShopofHorrors (KCP, 2017) and SweeneyTodd (KCP, 2019). This has been one of the best growing experiences for me as a performer. Thank you Billy for talking me into auditioning and thank you to Taj and Monica for trusting me to be a part of this project.

Stepping back into theater after many years, Bel has been performing in several bands including her own (Pico de Gallo). Bel, an RN, is also co-founder of Kauai Mental Health Advocates, bringing services and resources to the Kauai community.
Monica Chung
Monica Chung is a concert pianist, producer, music director, and teacher. She has appeared as soloist with orchestras in London, Hungary, NYC, and St. Petersburg Russia under the baton of the late Sviatoslav Luther. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed at music festivals around the world including International Musicians Seminar (IMS) in Prussia Cove, Banff Chamber Music Festival, Leipzig Music Festival, Tel-Hai International Masterclasses. She maintains a studio of talented young piano students, is founder of the Night of Chamber Music series, and enjoys collaborating with artists locally and abroad.

SpringAwakening depicts some hard topics that may be hard for anyone to talk about. Sexual assault, self-harm, suicide, abortion, violence.
