Boomers Making Smarter Choices To Protect Good Health

E

very day, more than 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare-but the generation that put the first man on the moon doesn’t plan to spend retirement sitting back in a rocking chair. In fact, a recent survey shows that 87 percent of New York area boomers say “you’re only as old as you feel.”

The survey, conducted by Affinity Health Plan and Kelton, found that not only are boomers optimistic about retirement (85 percent)—nearly twothirds of those surveyed believe that the best times are ahead of them. So what do boomers plan to do with their time? A majority (77 percent) plan to travel more, 47 percent plan to attend more sporting events and concerts, and 34 percent are taking up new hobbies. Boomers are also taking better care of their health so they can enjoy an active lifestyle for years to come. Seventy-five percent report eating healthier and 66 percent report that they are exercising more. Looking, feeling and acting young may be why 84 percent of boomers surveyed said, “Now is the time in my life when I get to do the things I always wanted to do.”

Survey Indicates Midsize Business Confidence Rising

G

ood news about the economy: America tops the list in seeking risk, hiring new talent, and recognizing and addressing high turnover as areas of focus for business growth in the coming year. The most confident and healthy sector of the U.S. economy is mid-size business, according to new research from The Sage Group plc. These businesses are comprised of 100 or more employees but fewer than 1,000.

The annual Sage Business Index looked at confidence indicators including business growth, exporting, governmental support and risk. In each of the four categories, the United States showed the most optimism, with the highest or second highest scores among all countries surveyed, though it joins other countries in citing government bureaucracy and logistical costs of exporting as common challenges.

“According to all indications, the economic forecast for the mid-market is rich with growth opportunity,” said Joe Langner, executive vice president at Sage North America. “We anticipate positive activity in the job market with smart companies focused on hiring, developing and keeping a talented workforce.”

With confidence at an all-time high, mid-market companies can leverage this opportunity by putting into practice some basic strategies focused on human capital as its most important asset.

Make a plan. Realistic in its optimism, midsize companies understand that growth, sales and profitability all come from their employees enjoying their roles and performing to the best of their ability.

More than half of the companies surveyed say the number of people employed by their business will increase over the next year. With this in mind, having a clear definition of business goals is imperative in identifying

and building an effective workforce. Once business goals are defined, take inventory of current employees and determine where you need to build. Visualize what your winning team looks like, then do what it takes to get them.

Attract the right talent. Sounds simple, but attract the talent you want by offering the positive traits that midsize businesses provide. With 23 percent of mid-market companies planning to hire, the climate is ripe for recruiting smart talent based on those things a company with 100+ employees inherently provides-a mature culture, good benefits and an historical foundation. That being said, talented candidates are also lured to work for companies that foster creativity, offer flexibility and provide opportunities to innovate. By investing in infrastructure and technology, mid-market companies are in a position to appeal to the talent that’s right for them.

Retention is a strategy. A resounding 76 percent of American mid-market companies anticipate an increase in turnover over the next year. Market conditions such as this are a breeding ground for enthusiastic recruiters seeking to snatch your best talent unless you offer them sound reason to stay. While cash is certainly great and employees will take it, appealing to them on another level wins them over for the long haul. Do they want to train and mentor people? Do they need to work remotely during the summer to accommodate family needs? Benefits such as these require that you know your people’s motivations and shows that you are investing in them. Bottom line: Turnover can be a costly leak in the bucket when you consider the price of lost productivity, recruiting and training. Retaining smart talent is a strategy that’s critical to managing operating costs.

U.S. Farmers Keep Phosphorus Out Of Water

W

hile a disruption in drinking water supplies in Ohio and the Hypoxia “Dead Zone” in the Gulf of Mexico are two examples of what can happen when too much phosphorus fertilizer runs off into waterways from agricultural fields and suburban lawns, there are solutions to the problem.

Fortunately, new farming methods and technologies are already addressing it, and the agricultural industry is ramping up efforts to minimize its environmental footprint.

“Agriculture is making efforts across the board to control both point and nonpoint pollution,” says Karl Brooks of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). “Farmers are doing a great job of partnering with the EPA and staying ahead of the curve by using a variety of practices to help reduce nutrient loss and cut nutrient loads in water bodies.”

A primary culprit in nutrient runoff is phosphorus, one of the three essential elements necessary for plant life. Derived from phosphate rock, phosphorus fertilizers are essential to farming and food production. Without it—put simply—life would cease to exist.

“Eliminating use of phosphorus fertilizers is not a realistic option -but using this essential element in the right amounts at the right time with smarter application techniques and improved efficiency is the answer to ensuring the best use of phosphorus,” says Dave White, an environmental consultant and former chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

White cites a number of measures that U.S. farmers take to reduce runoff of phosphorus from crop land: no-till production techniques that eliminate or significantly reduce soil erosion and sedimentation; cover crops and grass filter strips around fields to soak up excess nutrients; precision application techniques that optimize the quantity of fertilizer applied; and

fertilizer enhancers and stabilizers to ensure more phosphorus gets into crops following application due to improved plant uptake, versus leaving unused phosphorus in the soil subject to off-site movement via erosion.

A major challenge farmers face with phosphorus applications is that 75 to 95 percent of the nutrient gets “locked up” or “tied up” in the soil following application due to the interplay of positive and negative charges among the nutrients in the soil, such as calcium, magnesium, aluminum and iron. When this happens, the phosphorus is unavailable for plant uptake, remaining in the soil instead and subject to movement off-site.

To help combat this problem, an increasing number of farmers use AVAIL Phosphorus Fertilizer Enhancer from Verdesian Life Sciences. It reduces the soil lockup of applied phosphorus and helps maximize availability of the nutrient for plant uptake, so a much higher percentage is available for the crops.

Drew Buettner, an agronomist and corn and soybean producer in Nebraska, farms on sandy soils in the Platte River Valley. “We have a very shallow water table and nutrient runoff is a big concern for us,” he explains.

“By using AVAIL with our phosphorus fertilizer, it is obvious to us that more phosphorus is getting into our crops and less is left in the soil and running into our waterways. The product does a great job of addressing our environmental concerns.”

In addition to reducing phosphorus runoff, Buettner says applying the enhancer also results in stronger crops, improved cornstalk strength and higher yields.

Understanding Escheatment And How To Keep Your Property Safe

I

f you have a bank account, are holding uncashed checks, own stock, are heir to an insurance policy or have property in a safe-deposit box, there are steps you can take to help protect your property from escheatment.

• If you have a safe-deposit box and never access it or make contact with your bank, the contents of the box may be turned over to the state and sold at auction. You could claim back the cash value— but not the valuables themselves.

“Escheatment” is the term that describes how “abandoned,” “unclaimed” or “lost” property is turned over to the state. If the property owner cannot be found or hasn’t demonstrated an interest in the asset, the U.S. state where the holder lives can take custody of those belongings. If the owner or heir comes forward, he or she can claim it back from the state but early withdrawal penalties or market losses may significantly affect the asset’s value and the funds may not be immediately available.

So how can you protect your assets? Staying in contact with your financial institutions is the key to protecting your property.

To actively show interest in all your assets:

You may say, “But I haven’t abandoned my property. I don’t have anything to worry about.” That’s not necessarily so.

Consider the case of an employee of a fast-growing technology company who held stock certificates with a face value of nearly $500,000. He kept the certificates in a safe and intended to use the funds for his kids’ college education. Unknown to him, his stock had been escheated due to returned mail and lack of contact. His nest egg was ruined and he was able to claim just under $20,000, the amount the state sold his stock for at the time of escheatment.

Here are a few similar scenarios that can happen to anyone: • If you don’t cash dividend checks, those checks and associated stock may be escheated unless you have made contact with the transfer agent.

Since most states sell shares immediately, you will lose out on any market gains, dividends or stock splits that occur after the shares are sold.

• If you move and do not update your address with your financial institution (such as a bank), it will mark your account as “lost” once it receives two pieces of undeliverable mail from the post office. After three to five years, depending on the state, your assets will be escheated unless you make contact with the institution.

1. Keep a list of all the financial institutions you deal with, such as a bank or transfer agent, and contact them at least once per year.

This can be as simple as accessing your account online, calling in to the customer service center, cashing a check, updating your address, changing a beneficiary

3. Consolidate accounts, to make it easier to maintain contact and keep track of your assets.

4. If you receive a notice alerting you to the fact that your account is considered “inactive” or “abandoned,” respond immediately. Note that service providers such as Georgeson may contact you, offering to provide assistance in helping prevent escheatment of an inactive or abandoned account. You have the option to use the service or handle it yourself directly with your financial institution—the service provider should disclose all options.

5. Make sure that your heirs know which stocks you own and where you have financial accounts.
