Buying over-the-counter (OTC) medicines or dietary supplements online can be easy and convenient, but how can you be sure that you know and trust the seller? As the number of counterfeit OTC products sold online has grown in recent years, along with scammers’ abilities to mimic legitimate products, experts at the Health In Hand Foundation, a non-profit with 20 years of helping consumers safely choose and use consumer healthcare products, are here to help you navigate the ever-changing landscape of counterfeit and resold OTC products.
Honest consumer healthcare companies ensure the safety and quality of their products in many ways, including using regulated factories that follow strict safety standards and verified manufacturing practices. However, some individuals produce counterfeit versions of these same medicines in facilities with little or no regulation, quality control, or safety standards.
When you purchase products online, the options can seem endless. One option is buying directly from a manufacturer’s website ([BRAND]. com), where products are sold and shipped directly to you from the manufacturer.
Alternatively, you may purchase products from an online retailer that sells multiple brands and products (e.g. Amazon, Walmart, Costco, or a pharmacy retailer). But make sure to look carefully because well-known e-commerce websites can have different sellers offering what seems to be the same product on the same results page. So. how can you be sure you’re purchasing from a legitimate seller? Keep these tips and red flags in mind the next time you plan on buying an OTC product online:
NOTICES: 0
No contact information. If the seller doesn’t have a physical address or telephone number listed within the United States, the business could be fake.
Prices that are too good to be true. Sellers of fake OTC medicines will often offer them at prices much lower than businesses selling the genuine product. Although the products may be fake, these sellers can still appear at the top of search results.
Photos that do not match the product. A low-quality image or an image that differs from the advertised item is another sign of a fake product. Some sellers will alter a photo by blurring or blocking the brand to avoid counterfeit detection.
Wording that doesn’t describe the product. If the brand name is missing from the listings, be cautious. Some sellers don’t mention the brand name in the listing to avoid counterfeit detection, and they may have an image of a branded product with a nonspecific description.
Unclear or confusing reviews. Reviews that don’t match the product listed or comments that are confusing or inauthentic are red flags alerting you to a possible fake.
Poor or non-existent customer service policies.* Beware of companies with no return and/or refund policy. Also, avoid sellers who don’t have secure payment protocols in place to protect your financial information when you purchase from them online.
*Important note: Genuine sellers often do not allow returns on OTC medications, so please review all factors mentioned before buying.
If you have already placed an online order for an OTC product, inspect it closely when it arrives to ensure it has not been damaged or disturbed. Trust your instincts. If the packaging or labeling looks off or if the product itself does not look right, return it and report it. Becoming an informed shopper helps you find the legitimate and trustworthy products you need to help you feel your best.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, nearly 5.8 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050, that number is expected to rise to 14 million.
Detecting symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease as early as possible can be critical to provide appropriate care and avoid potentially dangerous situations. And family and friends can play a vital role in recognizing and calling attention to these changes in behavior, especially for older adults who live alone.
While celebrating with loved ones this holiday season, Home Instead Senior Care encourages everyone to become more familiar with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, to be more aware so that critical warning signs are not overlooked.

Although many are aware that Alzheimer’s disease affects a person’s memory, there are several other lesser-known indicators that commonly go unnoticed such as notable changes in mood or personality, difficulty completing familiar tasks, trouble pronouncing words or writing, and increased anxiety.
Lakelyn Hogan, Home Instead Senior Care gerontologist and caregiver advocate, says, “People get wrapped up in the holidays and can miss important signs that a family member needs help - and doesn’t even know it.” She asks families to be mindful of the following signs that a loved one is struggling:
* Disruption of daily life. Is your loved one easily confused by changes to his or her routine? Are they beginning to forget everyday tasks, such as taking medication, feeding a pet or paying bills?
* Unusual behaviors. Have you noticed they seem unusually agitated or upset? Does it seem like his or her personality has shifted? Do they seem depressed or down?
* Disengaged with family. Is your loved one having a hard time remembering names of familiar family members? Does it look as if his or her mind is going blank during conversations? Are they having trouble keeping up with
topics of discussion?
* Impairments in mobility and judgement. Do they seem afraid or unsure when using stairs? Do they hesitate before taking steps or going down ramps? A decline in cognitive ability can also affect the senses, impairing depth perception and hearing.
* Loss of words. Does it seem they are forgetting words for everyday objects, such as toothbrushes, spoons or cups? Are they slow to form sentences or respond to questions?
“It’s important that we walk alongside our love ones in the aging process to ensure they are living safe and healthy lives,” explains Hogan. “This holiday season, consider the signs that may indicate early-onset or developed Alzheimer’s disease and talk to your senior relative or their caregiver about ways to accommodate their symptoms.”

If ever there was a story about a self-made man whose wealth can be measured more by the contents of his heart than by the contents of his bank account, this is it.
Everybody has heard of GoDaddy, but how many people know the real-life story of the highly successful, philanthropic, and colorful man behind the company? For the first time, GoDaddy and PXG founder Bob Parsons, in a highly confessional account, shares the story of his life, from his humble upbringing to his meteoric rise as one of early tech’s pioneers.
FIRE IN THE HOLE! The Untold Story of My Traumatic Life and Explosive Success (Forefront Books) is an unflinching yet inspirational account of his path to success, from a hardscrabble childhood to his combat service as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War – and beyond.
Bob ParsonsA descendant of coal miners, Parsons grew up in the 1950s in a blue-collar, working-class neighborhood in East Baltimore. Money was tight, given his parents shared a mutual fondness for gambling and were not particularly good at it. In his book, Parsons talks about the financial struggles his family faced, as well as the emotional neglect he experienced as a boy.
He writes: “We were just getting by when Pop’s business failed … my dad racked up so much debt from gambling and credit cards that everything came tumbling down. In the end, he practically gave the business away. And, when he did, we went from not having much to having nothing. I mean absolutely nothing.”
An admittedly so-so student, he recalls the struggles he faced in learning, as well as the corporal punishment dished out by Catholic school nuns. But his early experiences reveal an innate resiliency that got him through a harrowing tour of duty in Vietnam, his early years at his first company,
Parsons Technology, as well as his bold business decisions that would eventually make him one of the wealthiest people in the world. With a net worth of $3.6 billion, Parsons is No. 314 on the Forbes 400 2023 list of the richest people in America.
He’s an everyman who has made it. He’s authentic. And his reflections on life, business, and giving back are heartbreaking, heartwarming, humorous, and inspiring.
In the book, Parsons:
Shares how he survived his grueling tour of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Marines infantry.
Reveals the struggles he has faced throughout his lifetime because of PTSD, as well as the efforts he has made to treat it, including novel therapeutic uses of psychedelics.
Offers the lessons he has learned during his career, from the launch of his first business, Parsons Technology, to the creation of his present-day business empire, which includes YAM Worldwide and Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG).
Since 2012, Parsons and his wife, Renee, have donated nearly $300 million to more than 96 charities and organizations worldwide. Having suffered from PTSD, he works to find new and effective treatments for himself and others. FIRE IN THE HOLE! encourages readers to dream big and imagine all that’s possible – even if the cards seem stacked against them.

The federally funded program provides no-cost vaccines to eligible children
Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to help protect children from certain serious and potentially deadly diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unfortunately, many children in the United States are not up-to-date on the vaccines for which they are eligible. This puts them – and the children around them – at increased risk of infection.
Many children may not be fully vaccinated because of cost or because they lack access to health care services. Vaccines for Children (VFC) is a federally funded program through the CDC that makes vaccines available at no cost to eligible children up to 18 years of age through a network of health care providers across the United States. The VFC program helps ensure that all children have a better chance of getting their recommended vaccinations on schedule.
“A vaccine works best when everyone in the community has the confidence to be vaccinated,” according to the conveners of the COVID-19 Vaccine Education and Equity Project, a coalition providing education and raising awareness about the importance of vaccines and promoting conversations
to ensure equitable access to vaccines for all. “When you vaccinate, you’re protecting yourself as well as those in your family and your community.”
Children are eligible for the VFC program if they are 18 years old or younger and qualify for Medicaid, are uninsured or underinsured, or are American Indian or Alaska Native. Approved, available vaccines protect babies, young children, and adolescents from preventable diseases including measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, flu, pneumococcal disease, polio, hepatitis A and B, whooping cough, and, most recently, COVID-19.
Many doctors and nurses across the United States are enrolled in the VFC program and can provide vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, to children at no cost. If your child does not have a doctor, ask your local public health department about access to vaccines through the VFC program. Community health centers and rural health clinics may also be VFC providers.
Visit cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/vfc for more information about the Vaccines for Children program and covidvaccineproject.org to learn about the COVID-19 Vaccine Education and Equity Project.
Aquestionmany teens are often asked is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” While becoming a YouTube star or a rock star may be the “official” answer, most people end up pursuing careers they are familiar with through family, friends or day-to-day exposure—in many cases because they don’t know what other options they have.
It’s been proven that when students’ educations align with their aptitudes, or abilities, graduation rates increase. When using their natural talents at work, people tend to be more successful and more satisfied in their careers. One of the best ways for individuals to determine their natural abilities and what they will excel in, is by taking an aptitude assessment
Unlike a personality test that might tell a student that they are an extrovert and should be in sales, aptitude tests use a series of behavioral assessments designed to identify natural talents. In their simplest form, aptitude tests look at what you like and what you do well inherently, and use science to accurately hone in on true abilities. Things that are easy for some people can prove challenging to others. For example, some people are naturally excellent at handling numbers, others have impressive spatial awareness. Tests, such as YouScience Discovery, assess these areas and many more in a series of time-based exercises. In the case of YouScience Discovery, at the end of the aptitude assessment, each person is shown all of the potential career opportunities that are ideal for their specific talents, including careers potentially never previously considered.
New Opportunities: When academic and career guidance decisions are based solely on students’ reported interests, important pieces of the puzzle are missed. According to the research from The University of Missouri, interests are influenced by perceived “societal norms” that limit the scope of students’ career exploration. Aptitude tests uncover what students do well naturally and how they solve problems. Performance measures of aptitudes go beyond what students see around them and help expand their vision of
college and career opportunity and possibility.
Level Playing Field: Aptitude tests cut through social noise and biases. By empowering students with the knowledge of their unique capabilities, these exams help close the exposure gap and prepare students for career fields they may not have otherwise thought of or even known about. Each person has natural abilities; when these talents are identified, students often feel that they have more of a focus and a purpose.
Preventing Wasted College Credits: A college education is highly valuable, but too often students enter with one major and graduate with another. In fact, up to 80% of college students change their majors at least once before graduating. Not only can this cause a headache, it can be a costly mistake. Taking an aptitude test before attending college can help get students on a college or career track that lasts. Getting affirmation that an area of study makes sense for a successful career can prevent wasted credits and years studying the “wrong” material.
Backed by research, aptitude tests provide insights into the “science of each person,” helping individuals uncover and discover new purpose and intent. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” can now be answered with a sense of confidence and, importantly, can provide students with the positive reinforcement needed to pursue careers in high-demand industries where they can succeed beyond their imagination. -(NAPSI)
Every year millions of people struggle through the confusing and stressful process of finding the right ostomy supplies to manage their health at home. Better Health, a next-generation medical supplier, is innovating on outdated industry practices by offering unique customer support through education, coaching, and personalized product recommendations.
The core of Better Health’s offerings fall into four key categories: ostomy, urology, diabetes, and incontinence supplies. “I kept hearing and seeing people who were discharged from the hospital without knowing anything about how to manage their condition. They’re not sure how to find or use the supplies they need,” said Naama Breckler, Better Health’s CEO and co-founder.
Better Health is closing that knowledge gap with a service model that helps customers learn best practices for self-care. They offer personalized advice, product consultations, and 1:1 coaching sessions. Additionally, the company has incorporated a variety of ways for members to get in touch with their expert consultants, including phone support, live Chat, Facebook chat, blogs, and video content to reach those who need help where they are.
“It was great to speak with someone who is actually living with an ostomy. My coach shared her experience and suggestions that I found very helpful” said Anita, a Better Health member.
“Studies show that people who have access to this type of support have fewer complications and hospital readmissions,” added Dr. Rosemary Ku, Better Health’s VP of Medicare Affairs.
Better Health also addresses another source of stress for many individuals dealing with chronic conditions—understanding and managing their insurance. The price of medical supplies is not always transparent because insurance coverage and co-pays are different from person to person and the need for a prescription adds another level of complexity to the ordering processes.
“Many customers don’t know that insurance will cover some or all of the cost of their medical supplies,” Breckler said.
Better Health solves those issues by working directly with insurance companies and doctor’s offices on behalf of its members, in order to help members understand what their out-of-pocket costs will be before they order their supplies and help them save costs. Better Health members benefit from personalized care, specific product recommendations, and greater ease and transparency throughout the process of obtaining their medical supplies.
To get a free coaching session or help ordering supplies visit www.joinbetter. com or contact the company at (415) 475-8444.

For more than half of her life, 43-year-old Megan Bettor dealt with bouts of excruciating low back pain. She doesn’t remember a specific accident or injury that caused the initial pain – all she knows is that it was a constant part of her life.
Megan’s pain was centered in her lower back and was aggravated by sitting, bending forward or with physical activity. For many years, she managed it with conservative treatments such as over-the-counter medications and physical therapy.
As the pain worsened, these treatments stopped working. When this interior designer and mom of two wasn’t busy, she often found herself spending weekends laying in bed unable to move due to her pain.
“There wasn’t just like a bad week,” said Megan. “It was every day, every morning [where it was] nearly impossible to get out of bed, brush my teeth and feed our dog.”
Megan knew something had to change and began exploring surgical options, including a disc replacement, an invasive and expensive treatment that may or may not address her pain.
That’s when she met Ramana Naidu, M.D., director of pain management, MarinHealth Medical Center and interventional pain physician and anesthesiologist. Dr. Naidu not only offered Megan a clear diagnosis of vertebrogenic pain but also a proven treatment.
The ABCs of vertebrogenic low back pain
After examining Megan’s symptoms, Dr. Naidu reviewed an MRI of her low back. He identified specific changes in her vertebral endplates, called Modic changes, that indicated she likely had vertebrogenic low back pain.
This type of pain is a relatively new discovery and caused by vertebral endplates that get damaged due to age, wear, tear and everyday living. While approximately 5.3 million people in the U.S. are living with vertebrogenic pain1, this condition did not have an official diagnosis until recently, let alone a treatment.
Dr. Naidu thought Megan would be an ideal candidate for a procedure utilizing Boston Scientific’s Intracept™ Intraosseous Nerve Ablation System, which provides a minimally invasive, same-day treatment specifically designed to address vertebrogenic pain.
“Patients with vertebrogenic pain are the same type of low back pain patients we have seen for years,” said Dr. Naidu. “The frustration we had as providers is that we could identify these patients but there was little we could do to effectively treat them. The Intracept system changed that.”
The Intracept system targets a specific nerve in the lower back—the basivertebral nerve or BVN—that transmits pain signals from the damaged vertebral endplates to the brain. The Intracept system uses a radiofrequency probe to heat the BVN and prevent it from sending these signals. The procedure is proven to be safe and effective2, with patients reporting significant pain and functional improvements at five years after a single treatment.3
“Historically, the disc was presumed to be the source of most chronic low back pain, but recent research demonstrates that the vertebral endplates play a significant role in causing pain,” said Ray Baker, M.D., vice president and chief medical officer, Neuromodulation, Boston Scientific. “By targeting the
BVN, patients can achieve durable relief through a minimally invasive procedure.”
Regaining a life without vertebrogenic pain
After receiving insurance approval, Megan underwent her procedure with the Intracept system in November 2023. Her pain relief was immediate and, as time went on, Megan ramped up her physical activities without the accompanying low back pain.
Soon she found herself traveling with her family, including on trips to ski and surf – something she wouldn’t have dreamed of doing before. It also gave her an opportunity to appreciate doing the little things that previously would have caused her pain.
“Intracept saved my life,” said Megan. “That sounds dramatic but it’s the most significant thing that could have happened to me.”
For Dr. Naidu, outcomes like Megan’s inspire him to continue educating his patients and the broader medical community on vertebrogenic pain and the Intracept system.
“If she had surgery, it might have been helpful, but what would the longterm consequences have been? With Intracept, you don’t have to worry about long-term consequences,” said Dr. Naidu. “That’s why this therapy is so special – it’s really changing people’s lives in a major way.”
If you have suffered from chronic low back pain for at least six months and find it gets worse with physical activity, you may have vertebrogenic pain.
Physicians across the US are trained to make this specific diagnosis and to determine if treating your low back pain with the Intracept system may be an option for you. You can also use the Intracept Physician Finder to locate a physician near you to make an appointment and learn more about this diagnosis and proven treatment.

Over the past three years, 25 states have expanded school choice options, and families need accessible, straightforward information on how to access these choices. As we head into another school year, many parents are grappling with an important question: will my child be at the best school for them this fall?
Choosing the right school is monumental for families, and a very different process than it was a generation ago. With a range of options – including traditional public, public charter, public magnet, private, online, home, and nontraditional choices – parents have a lot to consider as they find the best fit for their child’s education.
A recent survey from our organization - the National School Choice Awareness Foundation - showed that 72% of parents looked into new school options for their children last year, yet 64% wanted more detailed information. Fifteen years of raising awareness about school choice options during National School Choice Week has inspired our team to create a new program called Navigate School Choice, which will serve as a hub for any family exploring any type of school.
Parents can navigate school choice at myschoolchoice.com, a new website with roadmaps to education policies in each state, tips about how to approach the school search process, and a customized school search tool. The goal is to make sure parents stay up to speed when things change in their state and are able to cast a wide net in considering schooling options for their children. With all tools available on-demand, year-round, parents can feel sure that they’ve fully considered all the options they have for their children and made an informed choice.
Imagine the relief of knowing you have explored all the options and found the right school for your child. It’s about more than just academics; it’s about finding a place where your child feels supported, understood, and able to grow.
Shelby Doyle is the vice president of public awareness at the National School Choice Awareness Foundation, which helps U.S. families explore their K-12 education options and choose a great school for their children.
