hanks to dedicated volunteers, an organization that was created to serve blinded veterans has been able to carry out its mission and steadily expand its range of services for nearly 70 years.

The Blinded Veterans Association’s (BVA) Volunteer Service Program is designed to support men and women who are blind or experiencing significant visual impairment by providing programs and support through volunteerism. BVA is a member of the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) National Advisory Committee. VAVS volunteers assist veterans by supporting and augmenting staff in settings such as hospital wards, nursing homes, ambulatory care facilities, outpatient clinics, domiciles, community-based volunteer programs, home-based respite programs, end-of-life care programs, veterans outreach centers, national cemeteries, and the Veterans Benefits Administration regional offices.

One such shining example is Felipe Flores, a BVA Volunteer National Service Officer since 1994. He currently works at both BVA’s office in Menlo Park, California, and the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center in nearby Palo Alto, where he is assisted in his work by his wife, Estrella. Flores meets with new trainees to provide information about BVA and VA benefits. He also meets on a one-to-one basis to discuss personal benefit issues. “By all accounts, Felipe embodies the BVA motto ‘Blinded Veterans Helping Blinded Veterans,’” said National Field Service Officer Claudia Perry. “He and Estrella continue working with the National Field Service Program as highly skilled volunteers.” The Blinded Veterans Association was established specifically to help veterans and their families meet and overcome the challenges of blindness.

Over the years, volunteers have shown themselves to be a key resource for the blinded veterans served by BVA.

Messaging Safety Tips

M

obile messaging applications have been called one of the most exciting and fast-growing spaces in this increasingly digital world. There are a myriad of services to choose from, including BBM (which is now available for iPhone and Android smartphones), WhatsApp, iMessage and more. While it is certainly a fun and easy way to connect, parents and children must be vigilant about using messaging services in a safe and appropriate way. Here are a few key tips to keep in mind for safe messaging: Chat only with people you know personally Billions of messages are sent each day and user numbers are skyrocketing as more and more messaging apps hit the market. While it’s wonderful that so many people are connecting and interacting, it also means users must be careful about with whom they connect. As a rule, message only those people you know personally. Unless you have met the person you are chatting with, it’s wise to end the conversation. Avoid posting your PIN or user ID on social networks. Know the appropriate time to message It’s important to be aware of appropriate and inappropriate times to message. Hanging out at home? Fire away. Out meeting up with friends? Not a problem. Times when your phone should stay tucked safely in your pocket

include behind the wheel of a car; walking in a busy part of town; sitting in a crowded bus; and many other instances in which it is important that you remain aware of your surroundings. Message only when it’s safe and your attention is not needed elsewhere. For those times when you have to send a quick note in a pinch, features such as group chats can help you quickly reach multiple people at once, reducing the time you spend focused on your phone. With BBM’s Glympse feature, you can simply share your location with friends and family so they see how close you are in lieu of typing out a detailed message. Send only the content you would be comfortable becoming public If you wouldn’t be comfortable sharing the message publicly, think twice about sending it at all. Once you press send on a message, it’s officially out of your control and the recipient can do with it what he or she pleases. So always be aware of what you’re putting out there. Whether you’re using BBM, traditional SMS or any other chat service, it’s important to approach messaging with a healthy dose of common sense. Always be aware, know to whom you’re talking and be cautious when sharing sensitive information. -(NAPSI)

Teachers Embrace Audiobooks For Students With Dyslexia

T

here’s good news for students who learn differently—and those who teach them.

listening to books on their smartphone or tablet doesn’t make them look different from their peers. They can plug in their earbuds and it looks like they are listening to music, when they are actually doing a reading assignment.”

Learning Ally, a national nonprofit, is considered a critical resource by thousands of students across the country who have learning disabilities like dyslexia, blindness or visual impairment, and has the world’s largest library of human-narrated audio textbooks—more than 77,000 titles.

Another Denver-based teacher, Lauren Sabo, believes part of what makes the materials effective is that they offer students control over the experience. “Students like it better than other tools,” she says, “because they can speed up or slow down the books, and they really enjoy the Learning Ally Audio app description of charts and diagrams feature. Without Learning Ally, students might fall through the cracks.”

Learning Ally has also built a community of support, giving teachers and parents the tools needed to help students succeed. For parents, the organization provides personalized consultations, interactive webinars and assistance in finding specialists. For teachers, it offers professional training and a learning management system, known as Teacher Ally, which is designed to help them maximize their audiobook resources. Allison Mitchell, a special educator in Denver, Colorado who works with students who have dyslexia and visual impairments, says, “With Learning Ally, I can organize book assignments and track my students’ progress. I love that the audiobooks available for download match exactly the re_quired textbooks in my students’ curriculum. I like how easy Learning Ally is to use. “The students enjoy the functionality of the Learning Ally app for playing audiobooks,” she adds, “because it makes it easy for them to find the chapter and the pages they need to read. Best of all, they love the fact that

At South High School, Allison Mitchell describes one of her students with dyslexia, Katrina, who has benefited greatly from her use of audiobooks. “It takes a long time for Katrina to read on her own, but audiobooks have given her the opportunity to take courses she otherwise wouldn’t be able to manage,” Mitchell says. “With access to these tools in the classroom, students can challenge themselves, and teachers are better able to lead them to college or a successful career.” Learning Ally has served millions of K-12, college and graduate students, as well as veterans and lifelong learners - all of whom cannot read standard print due to blindness, visual impairment, dyslexia or other learning and physical disabilities. olunteering is easy way to give back the increasing number of older Americans who rely on services and social activities within their community.

The Answer Volunteering can be a fun and easy way to give back to the community.

The Figures The number of older adults in this country is growing at a fast rate. According to a 2011 report from the U.S. Administration on Aging, there are roughly 11 million seniors living alone in their homes and nearly 1.5 million seniors in nursing homes at any given time. The older population numbered 41.4 million in 2011, an increase of 18 percent since 2000. Over one in every eight people, or 13.3 percent of the population, is an older American. The Facts

That’s where the Got an Hour? Give it Back Campaign comes in. It was developed by the Aging Network’s Volunteer Collaborative through a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging to help agencies throughout the country attract volunteers to programs that work with seniors. The campaign’s website includes a search toll to help connect volunteers to opportunities in their neighborhood. Volunteering can be as simple as driving an older neighbor to the doctor, bringing him a meal or helping her with housework. You can spend only 60 minutes of your time but the effect can be infinite.

Stay Safe After Severe Storms

E

ven after a storm has passed, there are still some things to watch out for. For example, electrical dangers may still pose a risk throughout the community and even in your home.

If someone is in contact with a downed power line, call 911 immediately but do not touch or approach the person so as not to put yourself at risk of injury. “After a storm, it’s important that you don’t turn on or plug in appliances until an electrician has inspected all electrical appliances that have gotten wet,” advise the experts at the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI).

You and your family should beware of electrical dangers associated with downed power lines and electrical wiring or appliances that have been exposed to water as a result of severe storms.

If your home flooded and water rose above the electrical outlets, contact a licensed electrician before turning on the main circuit breaker. Electrical equipment exposed to water can be extremely dangerous if re-energized without

How to Protect Yourself Downed power lines are extremely dangerous. You cannot tell whether a power line is energized just by looking at it. That means you should assume that all downed power lines are live. If you see a downed power line, move away from it and anything touching it. The ground around power lines—up to 35 feet away—may be energized. Shuffle away taking small steps, keeping your feet together and on the ground at all times. This will minimize the potential for a strong electric shock. Never attempt to drive over or move a downed power line; instead, report it to authorities.
