he Rio Metro Regional Transit District, the transit agency responsible for operations of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, announced today that they plan to unveil a new mascot in May for the commuter train. The community is asked to help participate in a contest to name the mascot.

According to Dewey Cave, Executive Director of the Mid-Region Council of Governments, the mascot was created to promote the family friendly environment onboard the New Mexico Rail Runner Express. “We plan to make this new mascot a fixture in our community that will help us promote rail safety and the benefits of our commuter rail system,” said Cave.

To reflect the existing brand of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, the mascot is a roadrunner - the official state bird of New Mexico.

Through a partnership with the Albuquerque Isotopes, the new mascot and official name will be unveiled at the baseball game on Friday, May 2nd. The mascot will make several appearances at Isotopes games throughout the 2014 season. In addition, the mascot will occasionally greet passengers on select trains and make appearances at many community events and schools to promote rail safety and the benefits of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express.

Naming Contest The public is invited to submit names for the mascot on the New Mexico Rail Runner website at nmrailrunner.com. Submissions will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 16. Duplicate name entries will be credited to the first person making the submission with that name.

he next time you’re enjoying a meal, take a moment to think about where the food came from. Think about the family farmer or rancher who helped put it on your plate—not only that day, but all 365 sunrises a year for you and the other 7 billion and counting people around the world American agriculture feeds. The family farmers and ranchers across the country—less than 2 percent of the U.S. population—produce the food, fuel and fiber people around the world depend on to survive.

Simply put, one farmer today produces enough to help feed and clothe more than 144 people on Earth. They contribute to the food and energy security of the nation, providing the safe, healthy, abundant and affordable food we expect each time we visit the store or restaurant. All without fail.

It’s one reason for the annual celebration of National Ag Day—this year, on March 25 (though any day is a good time to be grateful to America’s farmers)—a nation’s tribute to thousands of farm families.

According to the Agriculture Council of America (ACA), the national organization charged with promoting National Ag Day, it’s important that consumers understand where their food comes from and that many of today’s farmers use the latest technologies and safe, modern, sustainable practices to raise vegetables, fruit, meat, milk, eggs and other foods.

The ACA believes an accurate, basic understanding of how food is produced and how it gets from farms to their family’s plates will give consumers a greater appreciation for farmers who produce it and greater confidence in the wholesomeness of the food they eat.

Shining A Spotlight On Homeless Pets O

ne film star is stepping out of the spotlight to shine a light on homeless pets. It turns out that Josh Duhamel, an actor known for numerous action films, has a serious soft spot when it comes to pet adoption.

Rescuing a dachshund, Meatloaf, several years ago inspired Duhamel and his production company, Dakotakid Media, to join forces with the country’s leading funder of animal welfare efforts, PetSmart Charities, to create a Web series in support of the nonprofit’s Rescue Waggin’ program.

As executive producer of the eight-episode Web series “Rescue Waggin’: Tales from the Road,” Duhamel and his team follow homeless dogs and puppies as they travel hundreds, even thousands of miles for a better chance of being adopted. The Web series includes cameos from a cache of celebrity pet adoption advocates including Kristen Bell, Adam Shankman and Bret Michaels.

“Thousands of dogs are euthanized in shelters every day be_cause the adoption demand does not meet the supply of pets,” said Duhamel. “When I saw what PetSmart Charities was doing, loading pets into vans and transporting them to shelters where they have a better chance of being adopted, I wanted to tell the story of this lifesaving program.”

“Rescue Waggin’: Tales from the Road” puts viewers in the passenger’s seat of the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle to experience the shelter pet transport process from start to finish.

The Web series chronicles the real stories of dogs and puppies from communities with more pets than adopters to communities where adoptable pets are in demand.

Rescue Waggin’ vehicles travel up to 3,000 miles a week giving hopeless pets a new “leash” on life. When one of the dogs is settled into his new shelter, he is usually adopted within three to seven days. PetSmart Chari-

ties estimates the Rescue Waggin’ program has saved more than 70,000

dogs and puppies since 2004.

“I actually bought my first dog, Zoe, and I got some criticism from family and friends over it. So when it came time to find her a companion, we realized that adoption was the only way to go. Adopted dogs and cats make incredible pets,” said Duhamel.
