he Location Managers Guild of America has released its list of nominees for its inaugural LMGA Awards. The Albuquerque Film Office was nominated in the “Outstanding Film Commission, 2013” category.

The 1st Annual LMGA Awards Show celebrates the accomplishments in location scouting/managing and the work of film commissions internationally. According to the organizers, this award is “given to the film commission that rises above and beyond the call of duty.” The Albuquerque Film Office was nominated due to its contribution to the TV production “Breaking Bad” and the feature film “Lone Survivor.”

Deep Freeze Can’t Stop Die-Hard Grillers From Cooking In The Great Outdoors E

ven when the temperatures dip, grill lovers don’t want to-or have to-give up the smoky, delicious flavors of grilled food.

In fact, according to the 25th annual Weber GrillWatch Survey, 51 percent of grill owners fire up their grills year-round and more than a third of them report grilling in below-freezing temperatures.

If you’re among them—or would like to be—here’s an essential list of handy tips: Prepare 1. In addition to shoveling a path to your grill, remember to brush all the snow off, since snow on the grill lid will ultimately lower the temperature inside it—resulting in longer cooking times.

2. Just because it’s cold outside, that doesn’t mean you should ever grill in an enclosed space that can trap deadly carbon monoxide, such as inside a garage or under an overhang.

3. Plan on adding five to 10 minutes to the normal time it takes to preheat your grill.

4. For charcoal grills, it may be necessary to add charcoal more often to maintain a consistent temperature when it’s cold or windy. When adding charcoal, lift the grill lid slowly and to the side to prevent ashes

from blowing up on the food.

5. Position gas grills so the wind is perpendicular to the gas flow and not blowing the flame down the burner tubes.

Accessorize • Remember: Snow gloves are not barbecue gloves. Make sure you have on heatresistant gloves when operating your grill.

• Use a timer to monitor your food and resist the urge to lift the lid to check the food. Although this is a great tip anytime of year, in cold weather, opening the lid extends cooking time as the grill loses heat quickly in cold weather.

Get Grilling • Large pieces of meat—such as turkeys—which are cooked over indirect heat, work well in cold weather as they require less attention.

Tips To Help You Build Healthy Habits W

hile more than two in three American adults are overweight or obese, there are things you can do to reduce your chances of struggling with your weight.

When Money Is Tight • Buy healthful foods in bulk, and choose frozen or canned fruits and vegetables.

To start, try to consume healthier foods and beverages and get more physical activity. Doing so may lower your chances of developing diabetes, high blood pressure or other serious health problems. New health habits may also help you look better, feel more energetic and even be a role model.

• Start a walking group. Walk in places that don’t cost money, such as a school track or park.

When It’s Hard to Stay on Track • Recruit others to be active with you. That may help you stay interested and be safe.

• Think about your most important reasons for being healthy. Do you want to be there for your family? Would you like to be able to do the things you love without feeling tired or out of breath?

The Heart Of The Matter E

veryone is at risk for heart disease and stroke. People of all ages, genders, races and ethnicities are affected. However, certain populations, including African Americans, are at higher risk than others.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, remains the No. 1 killer of Americans. Recent studies have shown that nearly 44 percent of African-American men and 48 percent of African-American women have some form of CVD. African Americans are also twice as likely as whites to die from preventable heart disease and stroke. Black men are at highest risk of dying early from these conditions. Why are African Americans hardest hit by CVD? Some factors that may contribute to this disparity are that African Americans have the highest rates of high blood pressure compared to other ethnicities—which increases your risk of heart disease and stroke—and high rates of overweight and obesity, elevated cholesterol levels and limited awareness of risk factors.

The good news is that you can beat these conditions. When it comes to reducing your risk for heart disease and stroke, the decisions you make every day—and can control—play a big role.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you can reduce your risk and improve your heart health by following the ABCS: 1. A: Take aspirin as directed by your health care professional.

2. B: Control your blood pressure.

3. C: Manage your cholesterol.

4. S: Don’t smoke.

A: Take aspirin as directed by your health care provider.

Ask your health care professional if aspirin can reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Be sure to tell him or her if you have a family history of heart disease or stroke and mention your own medical history.

B: Control your blood pressure.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis.

You can check your blood pressure at home, at a pharmacy or at a doctor’s office. Making even small lifestyle changes, like reducing sodium (salt) in your diet and being physically active, can reduce high blood pressure.

C: Manage your cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a waxy, fatlike substance that your body needs, but when you have too much in your blood, it can build up on the walls of your arteries. This can lead to heart disease and stroke. Eating foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent high cholesterol. Your health care team should test your cholesterol levels at least once every five years. Talk to your health care professional about this simple blood test and how to lower your bad cholesterol if it’s too high.

S: Don’t smoke.

Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. About one in five African-American adults smoke cigarettes. If you’re a smoker, quit as soon as possible. Join The Race To Find And Fix Leaks I

t’s Fix a Leak Week—time to join thousands of Americans who are chasing down running toilets and dripping faucets to save water and money.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense® program, household water leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted each year across the United States!

The average American home leaks more than 10,000 gallons of water per year, running up an extra 10 percent on water bills. Finding and fixing leaks doesn’t have to be difficult. Just remember three simple words— check, twist, replace—and you’ll be off and running to a water-saving home.

Check one of your winter water bills; for a family of four, using more than 12,000 gallons in a month might indicate a serious plumbing problem. To see if the culprit is a silent toilet leak, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank at the back of the toilet and wait 10 minutes before flushing to see if color shows up in the bowl. If you see color, you probably need a new toilet flapper, which is an easy repair to make. If you have a bigger leak on your hands, you can pass the baton to a trusted plumbing professional.

Twist and tighten pipe connections and reinforce leaky showerhead connectors with pipe tape. Or for just a few dollars, twist a WaterSense labeled aerator onto your bathroom faucets to use less water without a noticeable difference in flow. Replacing old, inefficient faucets and aerators with WaterSense labeled models can save the average family the amount of water needed to take 40 showers.

• As you begin to sort through the contents of your closet, remember the 80/20 rule: You wear 20 percent of your clothes 80 percent of the time. The rest just takes up valuable, reachable space.
