What’s Hot In Dining

H

ere’s food for thought: Americans love to try new things, and every year, new flavor trends are introduced on dinner tables across the country. According to recent food industry reports, this is the year of global flavors, with strong enthusiasm for the flavors of Mexico, India and South America and a growing obsession with chilies, lemons and spices, among other flavor forays. That means shoppers can expect to see these tasty trends reflected in new products from favored brands. For example, a well-known source of quality seafood since 1849 and an innovative leader in the seafood industry, Gorton’s Seafood, has rolled out an all-new Artisan Fillets line that includes Roasted Garlic & Italian Herb, Lemon & Cracked Peppercorn, Southern Style and Southwest Tortilla, all made with wild-caught Alaska Pollock and real, bold ingredients such as chilies, peppercorns and crushed tortilla chips. These expertly prepared dishes can be a convenient way to create popular dishes at home like those seen in top restaurants. Because they’re from a trusted brand, it’s an easy way to sample trending flavors and determine which to incorporate into dinnertime favorites. (NAPSI)

Top Five Tips For Spotting Fraud I

nvestors can sometimes overlook signs that indicate an offer really is too good to be true. This can leave them vulnerable to fraud and financial predators. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is the federal government agency that regulates the commodity and security futures, commodity options, swaps, and retail foreign currency exchange markets. It also works to protect the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices in the highly volatile, complex and risky commodity futures and options markets. To help, it offers the following “top five tips” on how to spot fraud. Much of this material was developed from research conducted by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. • What’s the rush? Investors should be cautious any time they are pressured or rushed into making a decision about an investment opportunity. Is the offer described as being good for only a limited time or in a limited quantity? Are you being led to believe you are part of a special group being notified? Take time to evaluate the offer and don’t allow yourself to be rushed into making any financial decision. Most legitimate offers will be there tomorrow.

• Favors are rarely free. When the person on the other end of the trade offers to do a “small favor” for you in return for a big favor, it may be a ploy to distract you from the business at hand. It’s best to stay focused on the opportunity, not to look for bargains. • Beware of the “Phantom Riches” tactic. This is when a con artist dangles the prospect of unrealistic wealth, enticing you with something you want but can’t have. Consumers should consider whether the salesperson is dangling incredible returns or guarantees. It’s important to remember that all investments carry some risk. • Selling credibility. This is when the con artist tries to build credibility by appearing successful, claiming affiliation with a reputable organization or touting a special credential or experience. A seller may have a corner office, framed diplomas or certificates and wear an expensive suit, but appearances really can be deceiving. Check out the seller’s actual qualifications. • Watch out for third-party endorsements. When someone talks about a lot of people you know investing in the opportunity and that you shouldn’t be left out, it’s probably a good idea to keep your hand on your wallet and your wallet in your pocket until you learn more. Know Your Symptoms: Heart Attacks Don’t Always Start With Chest Pain F

orty-one-year-old Michelle Melvin was celebrating Mother’s Day with her family when pain shot through her jaw and up into her temples. Then her arms went numb.

At first, Michelle ignored the sensation and proceeded to fill her children’s plates with food. It wasn’t until the pain and numbness returned multiple times that she told her husband that something was wrong. Her family chimed in with the usual remedies: Maybe you’re hungry? Maybe you should lie down? Drink some water? Michelle called Kaiser Permanente’s 24-hour advice hotline for guidance. After explaining the odd sensation in her jaw and arms, the nurse on duty advised her to go to the hospital immediately: Michelle was describing symptoms of a heart attack. Knowing the symptoms of a heart attack saves lives, and according to Kaiser Permanente cardiologist Julie Sutherland, M.D., women often experience different symptoms than men do. “They might experience shortness of breath; they might experience decrease in their exercise tolerance; they might experience neck or jaw pain,” explained Dr. Sutherland. “It might not be the sort of crushing chest pain where people grab their chest like you see on TV.” Michelle’s husband rushed her to their local Kaiser Permanente hospital, where doctors monitored Michelle closely. When Michelle’s tests came back, they proved the nurse right—Michelle had experienced a heart attack. It is easy for many women who are busy with family and work responsibilities to ignore the first signs of a heart attack. Because Michelle fol-

lowed her intuition and sought treatment right away, she fared well. Now fully recovered, she keeps her heart healthy by staying active and eating a heart-healthy diet that is low in cholesterol, saturated fat and salt. Seeking help at the first signs of a heart attack can prevent death and shorten recovery time. For questions or advice about a specific condition, always consult with your physician. To learn more about heart health, please visit www.kp.org. Also visit Kaiser Permanente’s Care Stories blog to see a video about Michelle Melvin’s story at www.kp.org/carestories. - (NAPSI)
