AFME Announces New International Film & Media Experience Coming to Albuquerque

he Albuquerque Film & Media Experience (AFME) at Nob Hill, June 3-9, 2013, is ready to take the Land of Enchantment to new levels with big programming and names that will make it one of the top movie festivals and destination events for the City of Albuquerque.

AFME is honored to have the involvement of Hollywood icon Robert Redford, world-renown artist Sibylle Szaggars-Redford, award-winning actor Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Revolution and The Usual Suspects) and director Joshua Michael Stern (Jobs, Swing Vote and Neverwas) amongst many other top names. Be Cyber Safe And Counterfeit Free

I

f you’re like nearly 85 percent of Americans, you’ve bought something online.

The problem is, that can expose you to fraud. In just two recent months, over $2 billion in counterfeit goods was sold.

Fortunately, living a “counterfeit free” life may be possible, at least as far as Internet shopping is concerned, says Tom Galvin, Executive Director of Digital Citizens, an advocacy group dedicated to raising awareness and protecting consumers. “Shopping online is convenient and cost effective but we can never lose sight that there is a network of criminals hoping to make a buck by tricking us into buying counterfeit goods and sometimes even dangerous prescription drugs.”

The best rule of thumb, he advises: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. “If a designer bag is a fraction of the cost of what it should be, you can bet it’s a counterfeit,” explains Galvin. “And buy prescription drugs or any medicine only from reputable sites. Buying prescription drugs without a prescription is a recipe for disaster—when those drugs are tested, far too often they aren’t even the drugs that were ordered.”

Staying cyber safe goes beyond steering clear of fakes, however. If

you’re offered something free online, there’s probably a catch. “Ever wonder why websites offer free movies or TV shows? It might be because when you stream or download it, you’re also infecting your computer with harmful viruses and malicious software,” warns Garth Bruen, Security Fellow at Digital Citizens. “Now that website has access to your personal information that’s worth a lot more than a free movie.

“What consumers really need to realize is that the websites peddling counterfeits, bad drugs or ‘free’ movies may all be controlled by the same criminal group,” adds Bruen. “They are clever and exploring as many ways as possible to make money.”

Just as you’d never knowingly walk down a dangerous street, staying safe online means avoiding websites that pose dangers. Red flags include offering you something free and seeking personal information.

Research Your Broker As You Would A Stock

I

nvesting some time and effort in researching your stockbroker—just as you would if he or she were a security—can pay dividends.

That’s the word from experts who say before working with a broker or other financial professional, make sure that person is licensed to sell you an investment.

One way to do this is by using a free online tool from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) called BrokerCheck.

To use the online tool, go to www.finra.org/brokercheck. You can look up a specific firm or investment professional. You can also search by zip code.

When researching individuals, the tool can be used to find: • employment history; • approved licenses, registrations, and qualification exams passed; • certain misdemeanor charges and convictions; and • disciplinary actions and sanctions imposed by FINRA, the SEC or other regulators.

When researching a firm, the tool can be used to find: • its address, legal status and types of business it engages in; • a 10-year history of all felony charges and convictions, and certain misdemeanor charges and convictions; • disciplinary actions and proceedings initiated by regulators; and • bankruptcy proceedings and arbitration award information.

Even if an individual or firm does not have a history of reported problems, the tool can help detect potential red flags. For example, you can see if an individual broker has switched firms frequently over a short period of time, or if the firm has changed its name often.

“The first step any investor should take before he or she does business is to use BrokerCheck to do a background search,” said Gerri Walsh, president of FINRA Investor Education Foundation. “Make sure the investment professional is licensed either with FINRA as a registered representative

or with the SEC or a state regulator as a registered investment adviser.”

It’s also a good idea to check with your state securities regulator, local consumer groups or others who have business relationships with a particular financial professional.

Help For Americans With Vision Loss

H

ere’s eyeopening news: With a little help, the 2.9 million Americans living with low vision—and the millions more who may have to someday—can maximize their remaining eyesight and safely enjoy a productive and rewarding life.

Low vision means that even with regular glasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery, people find everyday tasks difficult to do. Reading the mail, shopping, cooking and writing can seem challenging. Most people with low vision are 65 years old or older. The chief causes of vision loss in older people are age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataract and glaucoma. Among younger Americans, low vision is most often caused by inherited eye conditions, infectious and autoimmune eye disease, or trauma.

“I encourage anyone with low vision to seek guidance about vision rehabilitation from a low vision specialist,” advised Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D. A low vision specialist is an ophthalmologist or optometrist working

with people with low vision. He or she can develop a rehabilitation plan that identifies strategies and assistive devices appropriate for the person’s particular needs.

Vision rehabilitation can include: • training to use magnifying and adaptive devices • learning new daily living skills to remain safe and live independently • developing strategies to navigate inside and outside the home • providing resources and support.

“A vision rehabilitation plan helps people reach their true visual potential when nothing more can be done from a medical or surgical standpoint,” said Mark Wilkinson, O.D., a low vision specialist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Help can also come from the National Eye Institute (NEI), a part of NIH. It offers a 20-page large-print booklet, “What You Should Know About Low Vision,” a series of videos featuring patient stories about living with low vision.

The NEI, committed to finding new ways to improve the lives of people living with visual impairment, dedicates more than $24 million to research projects aimed at low vision. Projects include learning how the brain adapts to vision loss, strategies to improve vision rehabilitation, and the development of new technologies to help people with low vision read, shop, and find their way in unfamiliar places. - (NAPSI)
