Saturday night will feature a banquet with beautiful centerpieces designed specifically for the conference and there will be all night folding areas for those that would rather fold than sleep. New Mexico-themed origami creations from a Southwestern bowl to an origami ristra will be raffled off and attendees are encouraged to participate in the Design Challenge: crafting their own Jackalope of the American Southwest.

ot air balloons, Yucca flowers, red & green chile and much more will be on display this October at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid, but not in the way that you might imagine. From Oct. 3-7, 2013, Albuquerque will be host to the Pacific Coast OrigamiUSA Convention, bringing several hundred origami artists and students to the Duke City.

The convention will feature an Origami Exhibition open to the public on both Saturday and Sunday from 11am-4pm, as well as classes designed for convention-attendees offered Friday-Sunday. Classes range from simple (no previous folding experience required) to Supercomplex (able to follow intricate sequences, precise moves, etc.) therefore welcoming origami creators of all backgrounds.

“Everything from roses and calla lilies to guitars and dragons can be crafted out of paper,” said Patty Grodner with the Albuquerque Origami Society. “This conference is an opportunity to not only increase your paper-folding skills but also to observe the works of others and build a fellowship among folding friends. We are also welcoming some guest artists that are truly some of the top origami masters in the world today that will really show you what can be achieved with paper.”

O’Niell’s will be serving up this gleaming blue cocktail at both locations, starting Wednesday, September 18th. This will begin the countdown to the very special Breaking Bad Pub Quiz. Hosted by Geeks Who Drink,

the quiz will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 25th at 9pm at the Nob Hill location.

For the special quiz night, O’Niell’s will also be featuring the locally brewed Breaking Bad beer, “Heisenberg’s Dark”. An India black ale with a citrus punch, created by Marble Brewery.

Silvian Library and Study Center Grand Opening Sept. 21 at the Holocaust and Intolorence Museum of New Mexico

howcasing thousands of genocide-related materials, the Silvian Library and Study Center’s grand opening is set for Sat., Sept. 21st, at the Holocaust and Intolerance Museum of New Mexico. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., followed by lectures at noon and 2 p.m.

The compilation of more than 4,500 books, documents and videos is the result of 12 years of collection, two years of data entry and countless volunteer hours. The selection includes Holocaust materials, children’s books, detailed histories of the Rwandan genocide, and more.

In addition, the center, also called the Library of Remembrance, will host on-going lectures, research accommodations, and children’s clinics providing history lessons, the dangers of bullying, and the importance of kindness. Guest lecturers Susan Schadl, University of New Mexico History Librarian, and Barbara Druxman, a Holocaust studies scholar, will speak at the grand opening.

A grant from the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc., helped make the library possible. Additional financial support came from the Weinbaum Family in Corrales, Rainbow Roadrunner Car Club and Congregation Albert Sisterhood. “You couldn’t ask for more dedicated people,” said Jerry Small, a museum representative. “We truly appreciate their service in building what we hope will be a wonderful resource for the community.”

High Blood Pressure Tip

eople with high blood pressure should always read the labels of any medications they may take.

Both prescription and common over-the-counter medicines such as cold medicines, cough syrups and allergy pills should be checked for vasoconstrictors. oday’s jobs require more training and education than in the past. In fact, a recent study by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce anticipates that more than 65 percent of the 55 million American jobs generated by 2020 will require training beyond high school.

Ten Study Skills All Students Should Know I

n school, your child takes English, history, math and other classes. But a key area of academic development isn’t taught in a specific class, and without it, a student will struggle to excel in school. That skill is studying.

Sylvan recommends the following tips for elementary and secondary-level students to help improve their study skills: 1. Planners are a sanity saver. Time management is tricky. Having all major deadlines, due dates, events and extracurriculars in one place helps kids visualize their week, manage their time and stay on track.

2. Breaking it down is a good thing.

Understanding how to break daunting projects into more manageable ones is a key skill. For example, to make studying for a giant math final approachable, list all the concepts on the test and review them one at a time.

3. Organization isn’t overrated. Keeping notes, projects and reading materials in logical order helps kids find what they need right away, cutting down on time spent tracking things down and upping time spent actually studying.

4. Good notes matter. Practice picking out the “main ideas” in conversations with you, in news reports or in magazine articles.

5. Study slow and steady. The best way for kids to do well on tests is to review the information daily at home. Studying with friends in small

groups outside of school can encourage this.

6. Harp on homework. Getting homework done thoughtfully and on time is one of the most fundamental study skills.

7. Concentrating is critical. To avoid distraction, make sure their cell phones are tucked away and don’t let a chatty classmate cause them to lose focus.

8. Directions aren’t always direct.

Students can get tripped up by homework or test instructions. Encourage kids to listen carefully and spend plenty of time reading directions.

Also make sure they know it’s OK to speak up if they don’t understand testing directions.

9. Know you’ve got help. If prepping for tests is a tough ordeal and your child is losing confidence, a lack of study skills could be to blame.
