Back To School Is A Good Time To Check Your Credit Report W

ith the start of school, it’s a good time to review the family financial situation. Since parents will be shopping for new clothes and school supplies and even paying tuition as students head back to school, it is especially important now.

Financial experts say the starting point in reviewing your finances is to get a free copy of your credit report by going to www.annualcreditreport. com. This will provide you with an excellent, comprehensive overview of your outstanding debt obligations. It can also offer you a guide as to how much new debt you might be willing to take on.

“The Federal Reserve Bank of New York did a study that showed that households underestimated their credit card debt by as much as a third,” said Stuart Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “The average amount of credit card debt carried by a household was around $7,000. However, consumers estimated their debt at around $5,000. Credit report literacy is a priority for the credit bureaus. By looking at your credit report, consumers can get a more complete and accurate reflection of outstanding debt obligations before doing their back-toschool shopping,” Pratt said.

Pratt noted that reviewing your credit report can also prevent any future issues that might cause a problem. For instance, if you find any issues or information you don’t recognize in your report, notify the credit bureau right away. All three of the nationwide credit bureaus can be accessed online, by phone or by mail. Whatever method you choose, the credit bureau will contact the lender that provided the information and ask them to correct it and then notify you of the results within 30 days.

“While the chances of being affected by an error are minor, taking a look at your credit report is still the right thing to do,” stated Pratt. “A recent study by the FTC showed that 98 percent of credit reports had no errors that would negatively impact a consumer. And a 2011 study by the Policy and Economic Research Council found that 95 percent of consumers who notified the credit bureau about an error in their credit report were satisfied with the outcome. “ - (NAPSI)

Why Your Child Should Discover Nature F

amilies that spend more time in nature may see some surprising benefits. Research has shown that children who play outside in nature have lower stress levels and more active imaginations, become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems and have greater respect for themselves and for others. Not every child gets these advantages, however.

The Problem Studies show that all too many children don’t spend much time outdoors, even those among the more than 245 million Americans who live within 100 miles of a national forest or grassland. If children do spend time outdoors, it is typically spent participating in activities such as biking, walking, listening to music or using electronic devices. Nature-based activities, such as bird-watching, hiking, camping and fishing, are not as common.

As a result, children are not developing a relationship with or appreciation for nature.

Some Encouragement To help, the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council launched a public service advertising (PSA) effort, “Discover The Forest,” to encourage families to reconnect with nature. Originally launched in 2009, the campaign has new work this year, created pro bono by Burrell Communications, specifically targeting African American parents. For urban-dwelling families, nature can seem even farther away, but the truth is that most Americans live within 90 minutes of a forest or park—and it is worth the trip. The forest is a unique environment where children can flex their imagination muscles through exploration and discovery, and as any parent knows, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing their children’s eyes light up when they discover something new.

“This new campaign seeks to get kids and families out to enjoy the wonders of our forests,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. “The physical, mental and spiritual benefits our great outdoors provide are more important now than ever.” His agency manages 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands for the American public. Its mission is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. “Many families are unaware of the benefits that nature provides children, including improving their physical and mental health and emotional well-being,” added Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of the Ad Council, a private, nonprofit organization with a rich history of marshaling volunteer talent from the advertising and media industries to deliver critical messages to the American public. “Through these PSAs, we’re thrilled to show families how close they are to a forest, park or grassland and encourage them to spend active time outdoors.”

Time For A Gut Check For Heart-Healthy Living

hile heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, keeping your cholesterol in check may keep you out of such statistics.
