Taste Me @ the Fair T

he first thing everyone wants to know when they get to the Fair is what the new food items are. So, for the second year running, we’ve decided to sponsor a friendly contest among our vendors to see who could come up with the most unique culinary treat especially for the 2013 New Mexico State Fair. The requirements weren’t that the food item (or items) necessarily be new to the world, just new to our Fair. Out of dozens of entries, we chose what we thought were the eight most unique. You’ll find everything from deep fried Frito pie to pineapple chimichanga a la mode. “Poll 100 people on the number one reason they came to Fair, and 90 of them will tell you they came for the food,” said New Mexico State Fair General Manager Dan Mourning. “We actively encourage our vendors to concoct new specialties every year, and we host this friendly contest in an effort to highlight their creations, but these aren’t the only new and unique foods on the menu this year—this represents only what we thought were the most unique out of dozens of entries. We hope everyone will come on out and enjoy everything the fair has to offer, including the once-a-year foods you can’t get anywhere else,” Mourning said.

Deep Fried Bacon Wrapped Chili Cheese Dog—Chili Cheese Dog (along south wall of Natural Resources Building) An all meat foot long hot dog wrapped in a hickory smoked thick slab of Bacon buried in a homemade chili sauce, deep fried, and topped with moist creamy cheddar cheese sauce.

Live judging on Opening Day, Wednesday, September 11 (at approximately 2:30 p.m. on the State Fair Pavilion Stage), will be handled by a group of local TV news personalities who will taste and rank each and every one of the goodies you’ll find listed below (we go to print prior to the judging, so you’ll have to ask around to find out who won). We encourage you to make an entire State Fair day of trying all of these quizzical culinary curiosities and judging for yourself. Here they are:

Deep Fried Green Chile Cheese Curds—Farrar’s Fresh Cut French Fries & Deep Fried Cheese Curds (west side of Main Street in Front of Agriculture Building) Fresh hand dipped green chile cheese curds deep fried to a crispy outside and gooy cheesy inside with a nice spicy kick. Make Sure Your Ducts Are Done Right W

hen it’s time to have your home’s heating and cooling ducts cleaned, it’s important to do your homework and avoid scam artists.

So say the experts at the nonprofit National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). They recently exposed some companies that use bait-andswitch tactics to take advantage of consumers. Said Executive Director Jodi Araujo, “Consumers should always be on the lookout for duct-cleaning companies whose advertised prices seem too good to be true. Beyond the pricing issues, incomplete and unprofessional work on air duct systems could damage the integrity of consumers’ HVAC system. Be sure to work with a qualified, NADCA-certified HVAC professional.” She offers the following advice: • Make sure the ductwork, coils and all components are cleaned in accordance with NADCA standards. • Be sure this is all documented on the bill of sale.

Rack Up Some Extra Space On Your Vehicle W

hen you need to haul stuff for work or DIY projects around the yard, a pickup truck is invaluable. The downfall of pickup trucks is the lack of secure storage and ability to carry longer items. Truck boxes and racks are a perfect solution for these challenges.

abling you to mount accessories on the top or bottom of the crossbar and store things below the rack. • Only some of the many options you see on shelves and online are made in the U.S.A., which many people prefer.

For the workman looking for tough, well-built storage and carrying solutions, there are many options on the market. Here are some features to look for when you are in the market:

In addition, you can improve your truck’s storage capacity with lightweight aluminum or tough steel utility chests, boxes, undermount cases and even special cages for transporting dogs.

• Because your truck will be exposed to the elements, look for items made of aluminum. Not only are aluminum products rust resistant, they are much lighter without compromising strength. Traditional steel truck racks can weigh up to 200 pounds, eating up a significant portion of the truck bed’s weight capacity and decreasing gas mileage. • For a higher-quality finish and more style, look for racks and boxes that have been powder coated. This will also provide longer life to these products. • Because of their surface area, look for racks that are aerodynamic. This helps to slice through the wind and keep any wind noise to a minimum. • Some racks are equipped with dual T-slot channels in crossbars, en-

Once your truck is fully equipped, loading it up can be easier if you heed six hints: 1. Load the heaviest items first, in front and on the floor. 2. Load lightest items last, on the top and to the rear. 3. Pack all items closely and firmly. 4. Secure partial loads with straps, as close to the front of the cargo area as possible. 5. Never load cargo on the outside of the truck. 6. Always be sure the cargo door is closed and latched securely. Learn More For further facts on truck racks and boxes, go to www.UWSTA.com and www.TracRac.com or call (800) 432-4685. - (NAPSI)

Walk With Giants in this New Giant Screen 3D Adventure Titans of the Ice Age, one of the most highly anticipated giant screen releases this year, is an action-packed immersive portal to the great Pleistocene ice age, 20,000 years back in time. Narrated by Academy Award® winning actor Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music, Up, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Beginners), Titans of the Ice Age transports viewers to the otherworldly frozen landscapes of the northern hemisphere 10,000 years before modern civilization. Opening at the Lockheed Martin DynaTheater on August 30, 2013, Titans of the Ice Age brings this harsh and beautiful era to life – a world bur-

ied in our ancestral memory, populated by saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves and the iconic woolly mammoths. Travel across monumental glaciers and sweeping grasslands, rich in life. Roam the mammoth steppe with baby Lyuba, a female Woolly Mammoth calf recently exposed by the melting Siberian permafrost, now one of the best preserved mammoth mummies in the world. Discover the story of Zed, one of the most complete Colombian Mammoth skeletons ever uncovered, extracted in 2008 from under a Los Angeles parking lot next to the famous La Brea Tar Pits. Witness a time when titans ruled untamed continents and humans walked with giants. “Titans of the Ice Age has all the ingredients for a giant screen wildlife spectacle.” said Andy Wood, Producer. “Audiences will experience the world of these prehistoric animals with a realism that only this canvas can provide. The Pleistocene has been an incredibly popular subject in commercial films and pop culture over the past decade – kids love mammoths! But the historical accuracy has often been lacking. Titans of the Ice Age presents a veritable depiction of this fascinating epoch, and we are really proud to have worked with a distinguished team of scientists and partners to tell its story. The end result is a film that is both highly entertaining and revealing.” As one of the first films shot using ultra high definition digital cameras, Titans of the Ice Age is a visual experience new to the giant screen medium. Stunning backdrops shot on location at Yellowstone National Park, the Northern Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains and Alaska provide the scenery on which the drama of the Pleistocene unfolds. State-of-the-art, ultra-HD CGI allows long extinct Ice Age mammals to populate this world in photorealistic detail alongside Paleolithic humans, played by native Iñupiat and Yup’ik Alaskans. Titans of the Ice Age captivates audiences with a vision of a changing world, a time of new ecological pressures—leading us to consider the possible fates of today’s living mammals. As our climate continues to warm and human encroachment threatens the existence of thousands of species, could the megafauna of our millennia—elephants, bison, tigers—be lost to time like their Ice Age cousins? Titans of the Ice Age provides a bigger-picture perspective on the relationship between climate, the Earth, its resources and inhabitants, offering a cautionary tale that is more relevant today than ever. DynaTheater Schedule beginning August 30, 2013: Titans of the Ice Age: 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. Flight of the Butterflies: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. Meerkats: 4 p.m. Cost: Adults (13-50) $10 Seniors (60+) $8 Children (3-12) $6 Location: The Lockheed Martin DynaTheater is located in the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 1801 Mountain Road NW, Old Town Albuquerque. It offers a 3D experience on a 5-story screen. Titans of the Ice Age is locally sponsored by the Albuquerque Journal, 100.3 The Peak, Channel 95.1 All the Hits and KZRR 94 Rock. Titans of the Ice Age is a production of Giant Screen Films and D3D Cinema, in association with The Field Museum, Chicago. - ItsATrip.org

Asthma, Diabetes And Other Health Conditions Increase Flu Risks

T

he CDC urges the millions of Americans with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, stroke, or heart or lung disease to get a flu vaccine. A chronic health condition, even if it’s well managed, increases a person’s risk of serious illness from the flu. This could result in a sudden and costly trip to the hospital—or even death. “We have known for years that the flu is a serious disease, especially for people with certain chronic health conditions,” says Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service and CDC’s Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Last season, nearly 92 percent of adults hospitalized with flu had a long-term health condition, as did about 53 percent of children sent to the hospital. Health conditions that increase the risk of flu-related problems include: • Asthma and chronic lung disease • Brain and central nervous system conditions • Heart disease • Blood disorders • Diabetes, kidney and other endocrine and metabolic disorders • Liver disorders • Weakened immune system • People under 19 years old and on long-term aspirin therapy • Obesity. The chronic conditions most reported for adults sent to the hospital with flu include heart disease (37 percent), metabolic disorders such as diabetes (36 percent), chronic lung diseases (26 percent) and asthma (21 percent). For children, the most frequent conditions (obesity not included) include asthma (20 percent), brain and nervous system disorders (13 percent) and chronic lung diseases other than asthma (6.3 percent).

The flu can also make chronic health conditions worse. For example, people with asthma may be more likely to experience asthma attacks while they have the flu, and if people with congestive heart failure get sick with the flu, their condition could become even worse. The message is clear: People with chronic health conditions should get a flu shot every season as soon as vaccine is available in their community. This season’s flu vaccine protects against the viruses most likely to cause the flu this year. Flu vaccines have been given for decades. They’re safe and can’t give you the flu. Close family members and caregivers also need to get vaccinated to reduce the risk of spreading the flu to those at high risk. People with chronic conditions should not get the nasal spray. Flu vaccine is offered in many locations. Use the vaccine finder at http:// vaccine.healthmap.org to find flu vaccine near you. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/flu or call 1-800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636). - (NAPSI)

Making School Days Easier And Less Expensive M

any families may be surprised at how much they spend on school supplies: According to a recent article in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Magazine, for the average person with children in grades K through 12, it comes to nearly $700 a year. To help you get the most for your money, consider these eight ideas: 1. Try to get a list from your child’s teacher ahead of time. The teacher may require specific brands, sizes or quantities. 2. Subscribe to a newspaper. It encourages reading and can give kids extra knowledge and incentive in history, civics, English and science classes. 3. Depending on the child’s grade, you’ll probably need glue, scissors, ballpoint pens, No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, a pencil sharpener, a large pink eraser, water-based markers, spiral-bound or composition notebooks, and a three-ring binder with loose-leaf notebook paper. 4. Get pocket folders with two pockets. Label one “keep at home” and

the other “bring to school” to help your child organize his papers. 5. Get a calendar for scheduling assignments, sports practice and so on. 6. A pack of index cards for making flash cards can also come in handy. 7. Lots of books of all kinds. 8. A way to carry it all. It’s a fact: Kids are tough on stuff. But today, kids are carrying many more delicate things like electronics, phones and sunglasses. The days of the simple backpack are over. Today, kids need places to put laptops, tablets, cables and cords along with schoolbooks and papers. The Thule EnRoute series is a great option for all these needs. The packs come in four colors and four sizes, and feature a large main compartment with a padded sleeve for a laptop and a separate pocket for a tablet. There is even a heat-molded compartment, called a SafeZone, to protect those smaller, fragile items. - (NAPSI)

Diabetes And Eyes: What Your Vision Is Trying To Tell You

D

iabetes is a serious disease that can affect many aspects of the body— the heart and kidneys, blood circulation and even the eyes.1 In fact, diabetic eye disease has increased in prevalence by 89 percent between 2000 and 2010 and is a leading cause of blindness among American adults.2, 3 Despite this, vision care is often overlooked by people with diabetes as they work to manage the many other health problems the disease can cause. According to a survey by the American Optometric Association, 55 percent of people are unaware that diabetic eye disease often has no visual signs or symptoms.4 Additionally, 44 percent of Americans don’t know that a person with diabetes should have a comprehensive eye exam once a year, including a retina (dilated) eye exam.4 Yet these exams are the only way to diagnose serious eye diseases associated with diabetes at its early stage.5 Regular retina eye exams are critical for early detection and treatment of these progressive eye diseases that often begin without warning. The longer a person has diabetes, the higher their risk for eye disease. Over time, diabetes may cause damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye, known as diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to diabetic macular edema (DME). DME occurs when the damaged blood vessels leak fluid and cause swelling. Although symptoms are not always present, this swelling can cause blurred vision, double vision and patches in vision, which may appear as small black dots or lines “floating” across the front of the eye. Approximately 26 million Americans have diabetes and may be at risk for DME.6 More than 560,000 Americans have DME.7 Yet approximately 55 percent are unaware that they have the disease.7 African Americans and Hispanics over the age of 40 are also at a higher risk for DME.8 Prevent Vision Loss Getting an annual retina eye exam is the best way to help detect changes in vision. Don’t wait—make an appointment with a retina specialist today. For more information about DME and tips for healthy vision, visit www. DiabetesEyeCheck.org. - (NAPSI)

Chester Nez, an original Navajo Code Talker, will be a featured speaker at the event, as well as 104th veterans (now 86+ years old) and international guests from the Netherlands and Belgium. Weekend activities include a memorial service and banquet at the hotel, and early arrivals will enjoy multiple tours and attractions around Albuquerque. The 104 Infantry Division was activated in 1942 at Camp Adair in Or-

egon as an infantry unit with a focus on nighttime combat operations. Deployed during World War II, the division landed in France and fought through Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, which included several fierce German counterattacks as it advanced through the European Theater in late 1944, meeting the Russians at the Elbe River on April 26, 1945. A highly decorated division, the Timberwolves served 195 consecutive days—in contact with the enemy—on the front line, one of the longest of any infantry division in the European Theater. They received 1 Distinguished Service Medal (by their fearless general, Terry DeLeMesa Allen), 2 Medals of Honor, 6 Legion of Merits, 7 Presidential Unit Citations, 24 Distinguished Service Crosses, 24 Soldier Medals, 54 Air Medals, 786 Silver Stars, 3623 Bronze Stars, and 7011 Purple Hearts. They also discovered and liberated a concentration camp in Nordhausen, Germany, called Mittelbau-Dora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelbau-Dora), which housed political prisoners who were used to build V1 and V2 bombs, the forerunners to today’s intercontinental ballistic missiles. Veterans and association officers are available for interviews at your request. Please send any queries to Mary Jamieson (mejamieson@aol.com / 503-780-5176). - ItsATrip.org
