Votes were cast over a four-week period at www.10best.com and consumers had 20 nominees to choose from but Albuquerque’s green chile sauce grabbed the top spot. Following closely, in second, crabs from Baltimore and in third, fried cheese curds from Wisconsin.

Not Your Parents’ Retirement

The full top 10 for Best Iconic American Food includes: Albuquerque – Green Chile Sauce Baltimore – Maryland Crabs Wisconsin – Fried Cheese Curds Memphis – Pulled Pork Philadelphia – Philly Cheese Steak Charleston – Shrimp and Grits Chicago – Italian Beef Sandwich Indianapolis – Pork Tenderloin Sandwich New Orleans – Boiled Crawfish Key West – Key Lime Pie “We have been thrilled with the voter response to our Readers’ Choice Travel Awards. Nearly a hundred thousand votes have been cast so far and we’ve even had at least one mayor and one governor from around the country rallying their citizens to vote for what’s special about their region – from food to water parks. We look forward to engaging even more consumers in the coming weeks as additional categories are announced,” said John Peters, president of the USA TODAY Travel Media Group. Nominees were chosen by a panel of relevant experts, which included a combination of editors from USA TODAY and 10Best.com along with relevant expert contributors and sources. “We consistently find that our culinary offerings remain a top reason people enjoy visiting Albuquerque and we’re thrilled with this ranking,” said Dale Lockett, President/CEO of the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Through our engaged social media audience, we were able to spread the word about the Readers’ Choice Awards and encourage our fans to vote. They were very excited and definitely catapulted our destination to the top of the Iconic American Food list.”

mericans nearing retirement age are living healthier, working longer and playing harder than any past generation. Let’s face it—this is not your parents’ retirement plan. In fact, even how to apply for retirement benefits has changed—and for the better. Instead of waiting in line to apply in a busy government office, more and more people are applying for retirement benefits from the comfort of their home using Social Security’s website, www.socialsecurity.gov. About half of all retirement applications received by Social Security each month are online. Already, millions of people have taken advantage of this easy, secure and convenient way of applying. Applying Online for Benefits Applying online is convenient and will save you time and stress. The application is easy to use and can take as little as 15 minutes to complete. You can save your work at any point in the process and finish at a later time without having to start over. The application also offers: • “More Information” links to guide you through the process; • A printable receipt for record-keeping; and • A confirmation number to check the application status at any time. Getting Started

The 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Award contest launches one new category each week, revealing its 20 nominees. Each category will have a four-week voting period and results will then be announced on www.10best.com. Consumers can vote online for one nominee per category, per day, during each category’s four-week period. 10Best.com provides users with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants for top destinations in the U.S. and around the world. The core of the site’s uniqueness is its team of local travel experts: a well-traveled and well-educated group who are not only experts in their fields - and their cities - but discriminating in their tastes. These local experts live in the city they write about so the content is constantly updated. In 2012, 10Best.com averaged more than 700,000 monthly unique visitors generating approximately 28 million page views. It was acquired by USA TODAY in January of 2013. - ItsATrip.org

Before applying, anyone thinking about retiring should make an informed decision based on a number of factors, such as current cash needs, health and family longevity, whether to work in retirement and future financial obligations. It’s important to know that you can begin Social Security benefits as early as age 62, but the amount is reduced if received before “full retirement age.” Right now, the full retirement age is 66, but it will reach age 67 for those born in 1960 or later. Social Security offers online tools to help you understand your retirement options. The Retirement Estimator (www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator), for example, gives estimates based on your actual Social Security earnings record and allows you to customize your estimate by changing your “stop-work” age and future earnings. “Retirement” continued on Page 7...

Buyer Beware: Unsafe Used Tires For Sale W

henever you hit the road, it’s your car’s tires that hit it first, so it’s important they be in good shape.

The Problem Unfortunately, bald, damaged, unsafe used tires are available for sale in every state. New tires must meet stringent federal safety standards to be sold in the U.S. In fact, U.S. tire testing standards are the toughest in the world. Worn-out tires that have been removed from service can be resold as “used,” however, with virtually no restrictions. A Solution The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), the national trade organization for tire manufacturers, suggests there should be a law against that. “We are working to educate policymakers and consumers about the dangers of unsafe used tires and will advocate state laws to prohibit the sale of used tires with conditions that pose a significant motorist safety risk,” said Dan Zielinski, RMA senior vice president. “Consumers may think used tires are a bargain, but saving a few dollars isn’t worth the risk if your choice includes a worn-out or damaged tire.” To demonstrate the problem, RMA and its members purchased several examples of unsafe used tires from used-tire stores. Each tire exhibited one or more conditions that are clearly unsafe: worn-out, visible damage to the tread or other portions of a tire, or being improperly repaired. What To Watch Out For Tires worn to 2⁄32 of an inch are considered bald and are dangerous. Such tires no longer provide sufficient grip on the road, particularly under wet conditions. Tires with damage exposing steel belts or other internal components threaten a tire’s structural integrity. Improperly repaired tires can suffer loss of inflation pressure or have hidden damage that may contribute to tire failure. “Any used tire is a risky proposition since it’s impossible to know the service history of a tire used by someone else,” Zielinski advised. - (NAPSI)

Americans Are Still Phoning From Home I

additional cost. According to BasicTalk, this service can allow consumers to enjoy an average annual savings of $432 when compared to major cable or phone company plans (based on the average monthly recurring charge for an unlimited U.S. calling plan). Additional details are available at www.basictalk.com.

n the ever-increasing world of mobility, the home phone line may not be the most talked about communications device, but it’s certainly still alive and well in America. According to data published by the Centers for Disease Control, 64 percent of Americans still subscribe to a home phone service.

Services like BasicTalk can also appeal to heavy cell phone users. According to BasicTalk’s proprietary research, 40 percent of consumers who purchased the service did not have an existing home phone. This demonstrates that despite increasing cell phone usage, there still remains a strong desire for a simple, low-cost, home phone service, even for people who had previously “cut the cord.”

There are clear benefits to keeping a home phone line, including solving for the inconvenience of poor in-home cellular coverage, having a backup to a misplaced or dead cell phone, and the added convenience and security of always having a phone within reach. A new trend of no-frills home phone service is making it even easier and more affordable to have a home phone. For example, a new product introduced in the spring of 2013, BasicTalk, gives consumers all the perks they need in a home phone service for just $9.99 per month, plus taxes and government fees. BasicTalk users enjoy unlimited local and domestic longdistance calling (based on normal residential, personal, noncommercial use), voice mail, caller ID, call waiting and 911 emergency service for one low monthly rate. And consumers can transfer their existing number at no

For $9.99 per month, anyone who has a high-speed Internet connection can have an affordable, reliable home phone service. And for the price, it serves as a perfect complement to cell service for those who have given up or are thinking about giving up their home phones. Consumers can purchase BasicTalk online at www.basictalk.com and in Walmart stores nationwide. Mobility may be the new consumer buzzword, but home phone service is still a valuable service for most Americans. - (NAPSI)
