Embracing Technology To Promote Development S

ome say a new smartphone designed by Africans for use in Africa is a smart way to promote social and economic development throughout the continent. The phone is one element of a broader initiative called 4Afrika. It’s built on the dual beliefs that technology such as the smartphone and other devices built for the African market can accelerate growth for Africa and Africa can also advance technology for the world. The initiative is sponsored by Microsoft and built from the passion of its diverse employees. A Multifaceted Initiative The 4Afrika Initiative focuses on three different aspects of social and

economic development: • accelerating capacity building and skills development, • providing access to technology, particularly through cloud services and smart devices, and • helping to ignite African innovation for the continent and for the world. A Chance To Give Back The 4Afrika Initiative was greatly influenced by Microsoft’s African employees in the United States who were driven by the desire to use their talents and passion to give back to their respective countries. The African employees in the Microsoft Employee Network (EN) working in the U.S. were able to provide input during the planning phase of the 4Afrika Initiative and have continued to influence 4Afrika’s various programs. A telling success of the Africans at Microsoft EN and the commitment to the 4Afrika Initiative is represented by Patrick Onwumere, Microsoft’s Director of Youth Enablement, Africa Initiatives, who was the EN president during the 4Afrika plan ideation and recently transitioned from the Redmond headquarters back to Africa to lead the 4Afrika Youth Enablement program. 4Afrika offers the opportunity to channel resources from Redmond directly to the continent and provide unprecedented agility, which underscores the opportunity to effect change and drive business impact. A Long Relationship Promoting development in Africa is not something new for Microsoft. It has been doing business there for 20 years and now has 22 offices in 19 cities across 14 countries. - (NAPSI)

The Store-Brand Story S

avvy shoppers know that it pays to buy store brands instead of national-brand products. The savings from filling your cart with house brands, which are created by chain and specialty retailers for their stores, can chop one-third off your grocery bill. That adds up to an extra $45 per week if you typically spend $150 at the supermarket, which translates to $2,340 per year. From produce to personal care products, most everything today has a store-brand version. But there’s more to store brands than just great value. Here’s the story behind private-label products from Sandra Gordon, one of the nation’s leading baby product experts and author of the new book “Save a Bundle: 50+ Ways to Save Big on Baby Gear.” Store Brands Cost Less to Produce National brands typically cost more not because they’re better quality (old think), but because marketing drives up the cost. Name-brand manufacturers spend millions on marketing every year to attract customers and build brand equity. They use expensive tactics like television advertising and direct mail to get high-value coupons into consumers’ hands. These costs are ultimately reflected in their retail prices. Store brands, on the other hand, don’t advertise on a national scale. The cost savings from little to no promotion get passed on to shoppers. Store Brands Offer Top Quality Just like name-brand products, store brands are tested for safety and quality before they reach store shelves to consistently meet or exceed customer expectations and federal requirements. Retailers and their private-label manufacturers must produce products with standard nutrition labeling and comply with federal and industry regulations. Store brands strive to be as good as or better than national brands to stay in business. Retailers and their private-label manufacturers know that even the most budget-minded shopper won’t buy an inferior product for long. Store-Brand Formula Meets FDA Standards Like All Infant Formula Brands When it comes to infant formula, store brands must meet Food and Drug Administration standards just like their name-brand counterparts. Per federal regulations, all infant formula sold in the United States—store brands and name brands—must meet the same nutritional requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for infant formula under the regulation of the FDA. Store-brand infant formulas meet or exceed these requirements yet cost up to 50 percent less, which adds up to $600 per year. Why pay up to 50 percent more for the exact same product? Learn More You can find store-brand formula at Walmart, Target, Babies “R” Us, CVS, Kroger, Sam’s Club and Walgreens. Look for the storebrand version of each name-brand formula and make the nutritional comparison yourself. For more information, visit www.storebrandformula.com. - (NAPSI)

School’s Out, But Learning Goes On(line) With The Internet F

or many schoolchildren, summertime means days of fun in the sun, family road trips and visits from the ice cream truck. But many parents don’t realize that summer can also mean learning loss. Studies have found that nearly all children lose knowledge over the summer. In fact, when children head back to school in the fall, they are one month behind academically. This loss adds up year after year, especially for students from low-income families who may not have access to summertime enrichment opportunities, like camp, tutoring, and regular trips to the library. This can significantly impact a child’s success in school and in life over the long term. One way families can overcome summer learning loss is to make sure they have in-home Internet access for their children. The Internet provides access to an infinite number of online resources for all ages and across all subjects. While it can be easy to slip out of the routine of learning when school is out, it’s possible to keep kids engaged over the summer with online educational games, research on topics of interest, downloadable programs to brush up on math and grammar, or simply by reading a book online. Unfortunately, about 30 percent of Americans, many of whom live below the poverty line, do not have Internet access in their homes. This is particularly concerning because children from low-income families have been found to have a steeper rate of learning loss over the summer, specifically in the area of reading. To help connect these families to the Internet, Comcast is offering a program it calls Internet Essentials. Described as the nation’s largest, most comprehensive broadband adop-

tion initiative, it’s designed to help close the digital divide between those who have Internet in their home and those who don’t. The program provides families who have at least one child eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program with Internet for $9.95 a month; the option to buy a computer for less than $150; and access to digital literacy training. With a service such as this, students and families can connect to free, online educational tools over the summer, including some of these top suggestions from Parent ing.com: • PBS Kids (pbskids.org)—Find learning games associated with your favorite PBS Kids characters, including Clifford, Curious George, The Cat in the Hat and more. • National Geographic Kids (kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids)—Keep kids engaged with interactive and educational games, photos, video and information. • FunBrain (www.funbrain.com)—Math baseball and Mad Libs Junior for kids of all age levels. • Spatulatta (www.spatulatta.com)—Find kid-friendly cooking tips and recipes with lots of helpful videos. • NGA Kids (www.nga.gov/kids/kids.htm)--Explore art adventures with help from the National Gallery of Art. Programs such as Internet Essentials have the capacity to change the lives of students for the better by providing opportunities for learning when school is not in session. - (NAPSI)

America’s Oldest Ally Remains Key U.S. Strategic Partner W

hen asked to name America’s oldest ally, many would be surprised to find the correct answer is the Kingdom of Morocco.

The relationship dates back to 1777, when Morocco became the first country to recognize the colonies as an independent nation and granted American ships safe passage through the Straits of Gibraltar and access to Moroccan ports. This agreement laid the foundation for a bond that has endured to today. In 1786, the two countries signed the Morocco-U.S. Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which was ratified by the U.S. Senate in 1787 and remains the longest-standing treaty of its kind in U.S. history. During World War I, Morocco supported Allied forces, and Moroccan soldiers fought alongside U.S. Marines in France. During World War II, Morocco hosted President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle at a summit meeting to plan Allied strategy in Europe. More recently, in 2004, Morocco became one of only 20 countries to sign a Free Trade Agreement with the U.S., and it is one of the few nonNATO American allies in the Middle East and North Africa. Last year, Morocco and the U.S. entered into a formal Strategic Dialogue. And the U.S., through three administrations beginning with President Bill Clinton, has been a key supporter of Morocco’s compromise autonomy initiative to end the Western Sahara conflict. This long-lasting international friendship was strengthened recently when an exchange of letters was followed by a phone call from President Barack Obama to Morocco’s King Mohammed VI. The two leaders discussed fur-

ther enhancing bilateral relations through their personal relationship, and within the framework of the Strategic Dialogue that Morocco and the U.S. initiated in 2012. They reaffirmed the historic relationship between the two countries and agreed to increase cooperation on defense, security, and the fight against terrorism. They agreed to deepen consultations on a host of key issues where Morocco has valuable insight, including Syria, Mali, and the Israel-Palestine conflict. President Obama expressed his support for Morocco’s progress on democratic reforms spearheaded by King Mohammed VI, and told the King he looked forward to continuing their discussions in person, inviting him to visit Washington, D.C. this year. King Mohammed VI thanked President Obama for his commitment to the U.S.Morocco relationship and also invited him to visit Morocco. - (NAPSI)

New Survey Reveals Busy Americans Fail To Prioritize Sleep

M

any Americans today struggle to get enough sleep. Despite their attempts to do it all, pressure to meet the demands of an active, onthe-go lifestyle may be holding men and women back from achieving the type of uninterrupted slumber that leaves them feeling rejuvenated in the morning. These issues are all too common, as the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research estimates that nearly 70 million Americans suffer from sleep problems. Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. recently conducted an informal Sleep Survey that compiled data from 1,000 people across the United States who chose to participate in the online survey about how much and how well they sleep. According to the findings, 71 percent of survey participants do not get the doctor-recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Furthermore, 55 percent of those surveyed indicated that stress prevents them from falling asleep. “People need to remember to make sleep a priority,” said Jo Anne Turner, Adult Nurse Practitioner. “They can take a number of simple steps to-

ward ensuring a restful night’s sleep, such as eating well, reducing stress, exercising regularly and practicing good sleep hygiene.” Following these simple steps, as Turner suggested, and winding down after a hectic day remain more important to sleep than many may think. Twenty-seven percent of Sleep Survey participants do not maintain a regular workout regimen. Engaging in moderate exercise, however, has been shown to both reduce stress and improve sleep. Another way to keep stress levels low is to start writing a to-do list or jotting down important thoughts before bedtime. This helps to minimize the worries that keep people up at night. In addition to stress, other sleep deterrents can include caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Many Americans may turn to caffeine or naps during the day, but these quick pick-me-ups may actually delay getting to sleep later at night. In fact, 25 percent of those surveyed noted that they drink more than four caffeinated beverages per day. Nearly half of the survey participants also admitted to indulging in a daily nap. Consuming caffeine after 2 p.m. and napping for longer than 20 to 30 minutes can have a negative impact on nightly sleep routines as the body has difficulty developing a natural pattern for rest. So, instead of trying to exhaust the day’s potential with a double-shot latte or lengthening the day by borrowing hours from the night, Americans can get to the root of the problem by taking responsibility for their sleep. Working to create healthy routines, like going to bed at the same time every night, even on the weekends, can help regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle and make falling asleep easier. Keeping this commitment to wellness may forge the path toward gaining deep, restorative sleep every night. People who may be experiencing sleep problems are encouraged to take control of their sleep journey by visiting www.ProjectLuna.com, where they can access helpful tools, including doctor discussion guides, and learn more about how making small lifestyle changes can lead to improved sleep habits. - (NAPSI)
