he Albuquerque Film & Media Experience (AFME) at Nob Hill has announced four world premieres including Justice Denied, Circle the Wagen, Chasing Moonflowers and Moses on the Mesa to complete an exciting lineup of movies June 3-9, 2013. AFME’s robust festival includes 80 movies, panels and “Intimate Conversations,” fundraisers and unique parties and events.

Putting Your Home On An Energy Diet

W

hen budgets are tight and homeowners feel squeezed by higher electric bills, there may be a simple solution: Put the house on an energy “diet.” Here are some helpful tips:

• Install new bulbs and dimmers. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR−approved LED bulbs offer similar light quality to traditional incandescents and use about 20 to 25 percent of the energy, while compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs use about 75 percent less energy.

To go the extra mile in savings and to create ambience, homeowners can install dimmers that are specifically designed to work with the most popular bulb types (incandescents, LEDs and CFLs). These dimmers have been tested and designed to alleviate common problems associated with dimming LEDs and CFLs, such as fading and flickering.

Now it’s possible to save energy with LEDs and CFLs without giving up the desired ambience that many homeowners have come to expect from dimmers. Plus, dimmers are affordable and simple to install.

• Control temperature.

Homeowners can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling costs by simply turning the thermostat back seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day, according to the U.S. De-

partment of Energy.

• Turn off the lights. Occupancy/vacancy sensors can be installed in rooms where light is needed only occasionally. They can tell when people enter or leave a room and turn the lights on and off automatically. According to Dr. Brent Protzman, energy researcher at Lutron Electronics, sensors can save up to 50 percent in lighting costs. He recommends installing sensors, such as the Lutron Maestro occupancy/vacancy sensing switch, in bathrooms, children’s rooms, garages and laundry rooms. Sensors are as easy to install as a standard light switch and are economically priced.

• Treat the windows right. Using proper window treatments and adjusting shades with the seasons can help keep heating and cooling expenses from going through the roof.

“Free Lunch” Investment SeminarsWhat To Look Out For I

f you’re ever invited to a free seminar that promises to teach you about investing or managing money in retirement, and that comes with a free meal, there may be a few facts you should digest first.

Research by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation found that 64 percent of Americans age 40 and older have been invited to so-called “free lunch” seminars. While a free meal or prize might be enticing, in many cases the goals of these seminars are to recruit new clients and sell products.

“Even when described as purely educational, free-meal seminars typically have one aim and that’s to sell you something,” said FINRA Foundation President Gerri Walsh. “That ‘something’ might be a book, a particular product or financial services. But just because someone buys you a meal doesn’t mean you have to swallow any pitch—that day or days down the road.”

Securities regulators such as FINRA conducted more than 100 examinations of free-meal seminars. In half the cases, invitations and advertisements contained exaggerated or misleading claims, and 12 percent of them appeared to involve fraud.

If you decide to attend a free-meal seminar, be cautious and informed: • Watch out for conflicts of interest. Even if the people who host a seminar or speak at the event are industry experts, they might not be the ones actually paying for it. At times, insurance companies or mutual funds finance these seminars, expecting the speaker to drive sales of their products.

• Do your homework before the seminar. Verify that the salesperson is licensed and the investment is registered at www.SaveAndInvest.org/ LearnMore.

• Ask questions while you’re there. What are the risks of this investment?

How much does it cost initially to purchase the investment? For what type of investor is this investment a good idea? For what type of investor is this investment a bad idea?

• Don’t buy anything or open an account on the spot. The seminar might be intended just to introduce you to the product, with a hard sell later. Af-

ter the event, do some research on your own. Understand the risks. While the prospect of high rates of return might sound tempting, remember that there may be additional risks or costs associated with the product.

• Savvy investors refuse to be rushed. A good investment will be available tomorrow or next week or next month when you’re ready and understand where your money is going. Rarely, if ever, do you have to invest your money on the spot.

Understanding Your Dog’s Ancestry I

f you’re like most people with a mixed-breed dog, you may sometimes be surprised at certain behaviors and wonder just what breeds make up his ancestry. After all, experts on genetics contend that the dog is, at this point, the most diverse species of mammal. The many breeds recognized today are the result of careful selective breeding for functional attributes deemed beneficial to their human owners including hunting, guarding and herding, and desirable physical characteristics such as skull shape, size, and coat variation.

Genetic analyses across closely related breeds have suggested that a given breed represents a distinct genetic unit; consequently, relative genetic similarity within breeds makes the construction of definitive breed signatures a realistic proposition.

Fortunately, whether yours is a designer dog, a purebred or a mutt, the guessing game of just what breed it is can be over, thanks to a convenient 3-in-1, do-it-yourself dog DNA test, owners can now identify breeds that make up a mixed- breed dog; inform the parental ancestry of a “designer” dog; or certify whether a purebred is a purebred.

The test kit offers improved accuracy by testing for more than 200 breeds and varieties, covering 100 percent of American Kennel Club registered breeds. Once you’re armed with breed insights, this test can finally answer those nagging questions and may help you take better care of your pets.

• Budget for emergencies.

• Clean up after your dog.

• Make sure your dog is properly identified (tags, microchips, tattoos) and keep the registration up-to-date.

• Make alternate arrangements if you can no longer provide care for your dog.

• Recognize any decline in your dog’s quality of life and make timely decisions in consultation with a veterinarian.

Sell Your Home: For Sale By Owner Gets A Level Playing Field I

n the past, selling your home for sale by owner (FSBO) meant trying to reach buyers on your own by posting a yard sign or running a classified ad. With over 80 percent of buyers using agents to find homes, however, FSBO sellers were locked out of “the club” because they could not get on the agents’ Multiple Listing Service (MLS) or on popular sites like Realtor.com. Without hiring a full-commission agent, FSBO sellers’ chances of being seen by qualified buyers were slim.

Now, however, a revolution in online real estate has shifted power into the hands of FSBO sellers and leveled the playing field. There are websites that hook up sellers with agents who offer MLS listings for a low price and without any commission for the “listing agent.” The National Association of Realtors calls this “Minimal Agent Service” and, according to its latest research, flat-fee MLS listings are the fastest-growing segment of the market.
