Announcement: Tree New Mexico Presents ‘The Blue Trees’ T

ree New Mexico is bringing the art project ‘The Blue Trees’ by Australian Artist Konstantin Dimopoulos to three Albuquerque locations: April 12 & 13, 2013.

“The Blue Trees is a social art action. Through colour I am making a personal statement about the spirituality of trees and their importance to our very survival: trees are the lungs of the planet. Colour is a powerful stimulant, a means of altering perception and defining space and time. The fact that blue is a colour that is not naturally identified with trees suggests to the viewer that something unusual, something out of the ordinary has happened. It becomes a magical transformation.” - K. Dimopoulos The Blue Trees is an International art project that is now in four countries. Albuquerque will be the seventh city in the USA to host the project. The purpose of The Blue Trees is to bring awareness to global deforestation. Konstantin Dimopoulos stated, “As Purveyors of water, consumers of carbon, treasure houses of species, the world’s forests are ecological miracles. They must not be allowed to vanish.” Konstantin also feels strongly about the connection of The Blue Trees and the community; providing an opportunity to enrich the City’s cultural fabric, promoting tourism, providing a legacy of community engagement, and bringing awareness to the role of trees in City Beautification, and for environmental sustainability. Conserve Energy and Save Money! Suzanne Probart, executive director of Tree New Mexico, recognized the impact that the electric blue trees made in the landscape when first looking at the photos – it is shocking, but in a good way. “I immediately saw the connect between the blue trees and our Energy Conservation and Trees Program that brings attention to nature’s way to conserve energy,” Su-

Taste of Film Event to Benefit The Storehouse during AFME As part of the incredible week of spectacular events held at The Albuquerque Film & Media Experience, Executive Producers Lainie S. Quirk and Ivan Wiener are set to produce a culinary evening extravaganza, called Taste of Film, a food and film lover’s dream event, presented by Stella Artois and Clear Channel Media + Entertainment, to spotlight films from AFME’ s festival showcase through a delicious representation by the creative mind of Chef Michael Giese from the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The evening, emceed by SAG/AFTRA President and actor, Bill Sterchi and Clear Channel’s 95.1 FM afternoon drive host, Janae, will take us on a journey of the senses, where imagery of the silver screen is interpreted through Chef Michael’s creative themed hor’s doeuvres and a six course epicurean experience. With the collaboration of food and venue sponsoring partners, Ben E. Keith and Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Taste of Film will be a completely original way to enjoy the best of worlds, incredible filmmaking and innovative cuisine. “Ben E. Keith is pleased to be the food sponsor for AFME’s Taste of Film which benefits The Storehouse, our nonprofit partner,” said Lindsay Lancaster, Regional Marketing Director for Ben E. Chef Michael’s innovative culinary skills.” Sample highlights of the evening include a salute to The Redford Center’s WATERSHED, which Chef Michael honors the Colorado River documentary with a twice cooked striped bass (a fish native to the Colorado River), steamed and then lightly smoked, served with a fresh corn sauce, diced roasted beets, green squash and micro greens, the powerful film, VANISHING OF THE BEES, a brilliant expose on “Colony Collapse Disorder” with a stunning dessert of fresh berries – currants, cherries, blueberries, strawberries, boysenberries, elderberries with honey vanilla bean house made ice cream and topped with hazelnuts, macadamia and sesame seeds to represent foods that bees pollinate. “We’re excited to kick off the whole AFME week with the Taste of Film, “said Quirk and Wiener. “ The evening will be an unforgettable fusion of food and film, as we come to honor New Mexico’s largest food pantry – The Storehouse, www.thestorehouseabq.org.” For more information on the Taste of Film, to purchase tickets and to see the complete lineup of movies being showcased at the highly anticipated Albuquerque Film & Media Experience, please visit the official website at www.abqfilmexperience.com. - ItsATrip.org

Know Your Telemarketing Rights

H

ow do you know if a telemarketing call is a scam? That friendly voice on the phone may belong to an honest salesperson who is just trying to make a living or a crook who wants to trick you out of your money. Three-quarters of the adults recently surveyed by Consumer Federation of America (CFA) said that they think it is hard for most consumers to tell the difference. And while nine in ten are concerned that telemarketing calls from companies they haven’t done business with before might be fraudulent, many do not know their basic telemarketing rights. Knowing your telemarketing rights can help you spot fraud, because legitimate companies usually follow the rules; scammers don’t. Is an unfamiliar company calling you even though your phone number is on the National Do Not Call Registry? Is it a recorded sales pitch when you never gave the company written permission to make that type of “robocall” to you? Is the company’s number blocked on your caller ID? CFA’s new guide to Understanding Your Telemarketing Rights and Avoiding Fraud explains what telemarketers should and shouldn’t do and how you can report violations. If the telemarketer is violating your rights, STOP! HANG UP! It may be a scam. Other danger signs of telemarketing fraud include:

to get the money. If a telemarketer has money transfer as the only method of payment it accepts, beware! Those services should only be used to send money to companies you know and trust and to individuals you have met in person. You should always have the choice of whether to use money transfers or other ways to pay. Scammers may even suggest that you put cash between the pages of a magazine and send it to them. Legitimate telemarketers would never ask you to do that. They are also exploiting new payment methods, telling people to send them the money on a prepaid card or to put it on a MoneyPak, a product that can be used to transfer funds to prepaid cards or make payments to authorized merchants, and give them the serial number. Their aim is to cash in and disappear before you realize that you’ve been robbed. Crooks are also taking advantage of prepaid cell phones, Internet phone service, caller ID “spoofing” and other technologies to mask who and where they are. Often, they’re in foreign countries, making it difficult for U.S. law enforcement to pursue them. • Pressure to act immediately or you’ll lose this great opportunity • Promises that you can make easy money working from home • Offers to help you get a loan, fix your credit record, settle your debts, save your home from foreclosure or recover money you’ve already lost to a scam, if you pay a fee in advance • Guarantees that you can make big returns on investments with little or no risk • Requests that you pay a fee to enter a sweepstakes or lottery or send money for taxes, bonding, or legal expenses to claim your winnings. It’s also a danger sign if a prize is being offered as part of a sales pitch and the telemarketer doesn’t tell you that no purchase is necessary. Another clue is how you’re asked to pay. Fraudsters usually want to get paid fast and in cash—they don’t want to wait for checks to clear or for payments to go through the credit card system, so they look for other ways

your way down toward the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. Clean the fenders and bumpers last since they will have the most dirt and grime that can contaminate the wash mitt.

How To Clean Your Car

Give the car a final rinse: Remove the spray nozzle from the hose and let the water cascade down the surfaces of the vehicle. To avoid water spots, dry your car with a chamois or other product made for drying.

hen it’s time for spring-cleaning, remember to include your car. Cleaning your vehicle inside and out prevents the buildup of damaging chemicals and dirt, reduces the potential for rust from road salt and helps ensure proper visibility needed for safe driving.

To get started, remove any clutter from inside the car, including items that have accumulated in the trunk that can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. The next step is to thoroughly clean and vacuum the interior and wash the windows. When washing the outside, include the tires, wheels, underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. Wheels and tires should be cleaned with a mitt other than the one used to wash the body. This will avoid contaminating the vehicle’s paint with debris from the wheels and tires. Wash in the shade and with a product sold specifically for cars. Wash one section at a time, thoroughly rinsing away the soap as you go. Work

The last step is to wax the car. This should be done out of direct sunlight and every six months. It goes a long way toward protecting the vehicle’s finish and makes subsequent washes easier. If you found any stone chips, rust or other problem spots while washing your vehicle, the experts at the Car Care Council recommend having these taken care of immediately to prevent further damage. The Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. (NAPSI)
