A cadre of 36,000 trained volunteers assists with tax services and ensures taxpayers get applicable tax credits and deductions, which helps them have more discretionary income for everyday essentials such as food and housing.

This is offered in cooperation with the IRS. It’s the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to the older population. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service. The Foundation is working to win back opportunity for struggling Americans 50 and over by being a force for change on the most serious issues they face today: housing, hunger, income and isolation.

Taxpayers who file a federal tax return with a refund due to them can also get help investing the money in America’s future. They can purchase savings bonds in multiples of $50, up to $5,000, using all or a portion of their refund.

Three more things to consider:

1. Make sure you have all your paperwork: government-issued ID; receipts for health care; mortgage interest; charitable gifts; and all W-2 and 1099 forms.

2. To get your refund faster, bring a checkbook if you want to direct deposit funds.

How To Stretch Your Vacation Dollar

here are good reasons to include travel insurance in your vacation budget.

1. When Applying For A Loan, Put Yourself In The Lender’s Shoes

I

f someone you didn’t know asked to borrow money from you, what would you need to know before you took the risk of making the loan?

Most likely, you would want to know that this person had borrowed money before and had a good track record of repaying it.

Banks and other lenders are no different. They decide whether to loan you money based in part on the history they see on your credit report.

They use this information to determine how much of a risk you are—the lower your credit risk, the lower the interest rate they charge you.

So what do lenders look for when they size you up?

1. Your payment track record. Whether you’re applying for a credit card, cell phone service or new utilities hookup, creditors want to see that you have a history of making regular, on-time payments. A single missed payment can lower your score. Bankruptcies, collections, judgments, defaults, liens, foreclosures or repossessions may result in a decline.

2. Your current debts. The less you owe, the better. What you spend each month on credit payments shouldn’t be more than 40 percent of your total after-tax income. This is known as your debt-to-income ratio.

3. Your credit history. Naturally, lenders want to see that you have a long, consistent track record of repaying what you owe.

4. New accounts. Lenders also want to see how much new debt you’re taking on. So it’s important to remember that each application you submit—regardless of whether you’re approved—will show up on your credit report and potentially lower your score.

5. Types of credit. Creditors want to see that you’ve had experience using different types of credit. They look more favorably, however, on some types of credit than others: a. A mortgage looks good as long as you’ve kept up your payments. b. Vehicle loans and bank loans can show a history of repaying a significant amount of money consistently over time. c. Credit cards can be a plus, as long as you’ve made regular payments and don’t apply for multiple new cards in a short period of time. Avoid using more than 35 percent of your total available credit.

It’s important to keep tabs on your credit report so you can: • Know what lenders will see when you apply for credit • Be sure the information is correct—and if it’s not, take steps to get it corrected • See where you may have opportunities to improve your score.

Look for Hidden Discounts Several cruise lines have a “resident rate” for those who live in the same state as—or close to—a port city. For example, those living in states such as Florida and Georgia often qualify to save on cruises to the Bahamas.

Curb Your Spending Cruise lines make their money from onboard spending, not the price

of a cabin. Limit alcohol intake, skip the casinos and factor in tipping to the cruise budget. Don’t wait until the last minute to book a shore excursion. Passengers can save a bundle by booking on their own or through a third party, instead of through the cruise line. Just remember that the cruise line then has no obligation to wait for any passengers who run late on an independently booked excursion.

The Best Time to Book Travelers who are set on a certain itinerary or want to sail on a popular cruise should book six months to a year ahead. January through March is when many people make their travel plans for the year.

It’s also when cruise lines offer incentives such as 2-for-1 fares, upgrades and shipboard credit on regular sailings and repositioning cruises. However, flexible travelers can get incredible deals by waiting until the last minute, usually four to six weeks before sailing.

Deteriorating Visual Field May Indicate Low Vision-Solutions Are Available

H

ave you ever looked at a telephone pole and noticed it to be less than straight? Have you detected a loss of your peripheral vision, making it easier for people to startle you or making driving with confidence more difficult?

As you age, your eyes get older, too. And as your eyes get older, your risk for low vision and low vision−causing eye diseases increases. Low vision is common amongst people in their senior years. Once vision is lost by diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy, it often cannot be restored. Vision can, however, be preserved, and with a few changes in lifestyle and the use of low vision devices, living independently with low vision can be both safe and fulfilling.

“Low vision is a visual impairment that cannot be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, pharmaceuticals or surgery,” explained Dr. Paul Michelson, Chair of The Vision Council’s medical arm, the Better Vision Institute, as well as a low vision medical expert. “More likely than not, everyone knows someone with low vision.”

At first, you might notice a bit of distortion in your vision. Something that is a straight line in reality—a telephone pole, for example—may appear to curve to a person with low vision. Low vision can impair the ability to complete activities of daily living or follow routines and enjoy pastimes—such as reading—that people take for granted. It is a common ailment for adults 60+ and seniors who may be aging in place. Low vision is often coupled with a diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma.

Low vision differs from presbyopia, which is when the ability to focus on near objects simply diminishes. Signs of low vision are broader and include: • Areas of blurred or distorted vision or spots and blotches in your vision • Shadowed or darkened field of view or noticeable loss of peripheral vision • A gradual loss of central vision • Cloudy and blurred vision or exaggerated “halos” around bright lights • Blind spots in your field of view.

Seeing an eye doctor at the first sign of any visual change can help to de-

tect the diseases that result in low vision and is an important step in maintaining good vision. Sometimes there is a pharmaceutical or surgical solution to stop further progression of one of the diseases associated with low vision. There are also eye care providers who specialize in low vision devices. These specialists can help their patients with low vision devices such as stand magnifiers, closed-circuit TVs and telescopic lenses to help them maintain independence and improve their ability to perform daily tasks.

Dr. Michelson also pointed out, “We urge people to check on family, friends and neighbors who might be experiencing some of the signs of low vision. Vision training, vision rehabilitation and low vision devices can help people maintain and optimize visual function, and preserve as much sight as is possible.”

With the goal of raising awareness about symptoms of low vision and finding available resources, The Vision Council created a new website.

“The information and resources on this new website can teach people more about the changes they are experiencing. Catching the symptoms of low vision early may help sight be preserved and, in some cases, lessen the advance of low vision,” added Dr. Michelson. - (NAPSI)

Mowing Tips For A Great-Looking Lawn The grass can be greener on your side of the fence if you heed these eight hints on making the most of mowing.

1. Choose the Correct Cutting Height: This depends on the type of grass, the amount of rainfall, prevailing temperature and the lawn’s overall condition.

2. Don’t Cut Your Grass Too Short: Mowing too short can result in weak, thin grass that’s easily damaged by drought and pests. Leaving your grass a bit longer reduces heat buildup and preserves needed moisture. A good rule of thumb is the one-third rule—cut no more than a third of the grass height and never more than an inch at a time.

3. Mow With Sharp Blades: Sharp blades cut grass cleanly and efficiently; dull blades tear at the grass, harming it.

4. Mow When the Grass Is Cool and Dry: Late afternoon or early evening often provides ideal mowing conditions.

Don’t mow after rain or even heavy dew and never mulch when the grass is wet. Moist grass can clump beneath the mower deck.

5. Water Your Lawn Regularly: Try to imitate a slow, soaking rain by applying about an inch of water per week. Consider placing tin cans around

your lawn so you can check to be sure you’re giving it the proper amount.

6. Use the Right Amount of Fertilizer: A slow-release fertilizer provides missing nutrients for slow, even growth. When to fertilize and how much to use depends on the condition of your lawn and soil.

7. Aerate in the Spring: Using an aerator to remove cores of soil from the lawn increases clipping decomposition speed and encourages deeper root growth by opening up the soil and permitting greater movement of water, fertilizer and air.

8. Select the Right Mower: The right mower for your lawn depends on the size of the property, whether there are hills and whether you want it to help with other chores, such as pulling a cart for yard work. 3. Lubricate the drive chain with a chain lube to keep links and cables operating smoothly.

• After a cold, harsh winter, penetrating oil is great for freeing up frozen or sticky linkages on lawn equipment and shop equipment, like presses and clamping fixtures.

• For hedge clippers and other lawn equipment, a drop or two of lubricating oil will help get them garden ready in no time at all. It also helps to provide a barrier against rust.

• When it comes to keeping car window tracks running smoothly, many prefer a silicone spray as a lubricant, since it won’t streak the windows.

• And when your chores are done and it’s time to play, a light coat of silicone spray will also turn air hockey and foosball playing surfaces into fast-action fun!

rotect your biggest investments: your family and your home. A few easy electrical safety steps can help ensure that your home continues to be a safe haven for your family. The Electrical Safety Foundation International recommends the following tips to help protect your home and family from electrical hazards and fires: • Regularly check all cords, outlets, switches and appliances for signs of damage or wear.

• Use extension cords only temporarily.

• Be sure that outlets are not overloaded with too many devices. They can overheat and start a fire.

• Look and listen for warn-

ing signs of an electrical problem such as outlets and switches that are warm, or make crackling, sizzling or buzzing sounds.

• Always replace fuses or circuit breakers with the correct size and amperage. And make sure all circuits are labeled correctly.

• Consider having your breakers upgraded to state-of-the-art AFCI circuit breakers. Keep the electrical panel accessible so you can quickly shut off power in an emergency.

• Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Place alarms inside each bedroom and outside each sleeping area. Test them once a month, change the batteries at least once a year, and replace the alarm itself every 10 years.

Living With Allergies—And Animals

ood news for the estimated one in five allergy sufferers who have pets: There are ways you and your pet can live together. The experts at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology suggest you: • Keep your pet out of the bedroom. You spend as much as a third of your time there. Letting a dog or cat in increases your exposure to dander and the likelihood of allergic reaction.

• Bathe your pet frequently. It’s not the hair shed by the dog or cat that causes you to suffer, it’s the loose flakes of skin he deposits around the house. Bathe your pet at least once a week and dry him as best you can to limit the animal’s shaking and stirring up more dander.

• Replace air filters regularly. With a pet in the house, you should replace the filter in your forced-air heating and cooling system at least once a month. A high-quality pleated filter offers more surface area to capture more dander than a flat-surface filter.

• Clean your house frequently. Doctors recommend frequent vacuuming of both hard-surface and carpeted floors, heavily upholstered furniture and draperies.

• Consider a central vacuum system, such as the new BEAM Alliance System by Electrolux. It offers the most cleaning power available to remove 100 percent of captured dander from the living area without stirring up dust. Its hose-handle power controls let you increase or decrease
