The Problem For many of these young people, their tax filing is complicated by such things as high education loans and other debt and by the current “gig economy” in which many people are essentially self-employed, though they may not be aware of it. Airbnb, DogVacay, TaskRabbit and Liquid are all examples of the trend toward using the Internet to generate revenue from assets people already own—such as houses, cars and bicycles—and provided services. “There’s a real danger here that people engaged in the ‘gig economy’ won’t understand that all income has to be reported on their tax returns, even if they are paid in cash or the activity is only part-time or occasional,” explained Kerry Freeman, an enrolled agent and owner of Freeman Income Tax Service. “Estimated quarterly payments may be necessary, and when you’re selling cuff links on Etsy, for instance, the fact that you could be setting yourself up for a letter from the IRS is probably the last thing on your mind.” According to Freeman, taxpayers may also be missing out on business deductions they are qualified to claim, such as mileage on leased cars. The rules on rental income can be particularly tricky. In some circumstances, rental income does not need to be reported at all for federal tax purposes. suggests speaking with a trusted tax professional such as an enrolled agent (EA). EAs are licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and overseen by the IRS. In order to earn the credential, EAs must pass a stringent three-part exam on taxation. To maintain the credential, they must report annual continuing education on tax to the IRS. Hiring an enrolled agent can save significant time and effort in tax preparation and its associated tasks. EAs are equipped to advise, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts, and any entities with tax-reporting requirements. EAs’ continuing education requirements ensure that they have the knowledge to effectively represent taxpayers audited by the IRS despite the continually changing tax laws. Credit Card Fraud Phone Call Scam Hits Section 8 Landlords ection 8 landlords beware: A phone scam targeting you in the Albuquerque area has already claimed several victims.
Here’s how it works: A person claiming to be an employee of Albuquerque Housing Authority will call, and Caller ID will show the AHA office main phone number of 764-3920. The scammer claims that the Section 8 housing landlord failed to attend a mandatory class for Section 8 Housing program landlords at the AHA office at 1840 University Blvd. SE. As a result, there will be some sort of negative consequence for failing to attend the seminar at the AHA office. The victim on the phone call is then usually told to buy a landlord training book from AHA for varied amounts. The scammer asks the victim to pay over the phone using a credit card. The scammer states that this is the fastest way to have the failure to attend the Section 8 landlord seminar resolved. The AHA wants landlords to know that it does require any seminar at-
tendance. The AHA offers an optional class to learn more about the Housing Quality Standards and rent payment standards for the Section 8 rental assistance program. For those who wish to attend, there is no fee, and the AHA never charges a fee for the printed materials handed out at this class. Linda Bridge, executive director of AHA, advises that the AHA does not accept any payments by credit or debit card. The AHA only accepts payments in the form of a check or money order, payable to Albuquerque Housing Authority. The AHA staff will never ask a landlord for a payment by credit card or cash over the phone. AHA staff have no use for a credit card number. Anyone who has been a victim of this scam should contact the proper law enforcement agencies and the financial institution that issued the credit or debit card. Snowshoeing Is Good For You - Mind Body & Soul By Martin Frentzel
S
nowshoeing is good for you – body, mind and soul,” says Lisa Herrington, president of the New Mexico Mountain Club, an organization that turns 65 in January. “When you are snowshoeing, the beauty of New Mexico is unsurpassed.” The mountain club offers a half dozen or more snowshoe outings annually, although there is one big catch that can alter the schedule. “It’s all dependent on what’s on the ground,” Herrington says. Even if the dry winter that is predicted for 2016-2017 comes to pass, the club is still a good place to look for hikes that will help you negotiate the dark winter days of bizcochitos, pfeffernusse, shortbread, butter cookies, sugar cookies, ginger snaps, Moose Munch and cocoa. LOANERS AVAILABLE There was a time when snowshoes were wooden frames strung with leather decking and bindings. Todays’ snowshoes are made from synthetic materials – aluminum, nylon impregnated with urethane, and thermoplastic elastomers. It’s still possible to get the wood-with-leather decking (check out L.L. Bean’s website), but price and maintenance requirements probably make the modern style a better choice for our climate, even if weather conditions make it unnecessary to use them. Herrington’s personal snowshoes are top-of-the-line MSRs, which can cost as much as $300. The mountain club, however, does have some loaner snowshoes, although Herrington admits they are typically older models. In Red River, several outfits rent snowshoes for as little as $10 a day (All Seasons Sports 575-754-2308). The MSR shoes are popular because it is possible to purchase extension “tails” for them, which will help keep you atop the snow just in case all those holiday cookies are irresistible. Weight is a critical factor when purchasing or renting snowshoes, and one should remember that the weight of the gear you carry needs to be factored into the equation. That includes the water you need to drink, your extra clothing, your lunch, your sunscreen and everything else you take along. Extra clothing is one of the 10 essentials, Herrington says, referring to the educational information on the REI websites (http://www.rei.com/ learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html/) “In the hiking and backpacking world these are the things you must have,” she says. It’s a good list intended to keep one alive and safe.
Dressing in layers is also a staple of preparedness, she says. “You need to shed and add layers of clothing when you need to.” And a headlamp and/ or flashlight are critical for those rare trips that extend into the winter darkness. PUBLIC TREASURES National Forests – millions of acres of them – are one of the great things about living in New Mexico. From the Sandia Mountains of the Cibola National Forest to the high peaks of the Carson, we are fortunate to have miles and miles of trails, many of which are above the snowline when the storms are generous. Herrington says some of the mountain club’s longtime snowshoe outing leaders rate the Pecos Wilderness trips to Stewart Lake and Nambe Lake as among the best snowshoe adventures near Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Other snowshoe enthusiasts enjoy the Aspen Vista and Big Tesuque trails along the Hyde Park road to Ski Santa Fe. Valles Caldera National Preserve, on N.M. 4 west of Los Alamos, is another popular place to snowshoe when the conditions are right. In Red River, Enchanted Forest offers Snowshoe Discovery Days as well as yurt camping and cross-country ski trails. Firewood and stove are provided at the yurts, but you need to know how to start it. If snowshoeing sounds like the kind of activity you want to try when and if the snow builds up this winter, you also can get more information from Snowshoe Magazine (www.snowshoemag.com). The magazine has a First-Timer’s Guide. Herrington, however, advocates making contact with the New Mexico Mountain Club (www.nmmountainclub.org/). “I do feel we are the best kept secret in New Mexico in terms of outdoor exploration and wild places,” she says. There are 550 members who agree with her, and they only pay $15 in dues to enjoy the expertise gained during 65 years on the trail in New Mexico, snow or shine.

This is according to recent research that reveals a lack of financial literacy among American youth. But teachers and schools can now turn to a dynamic interactive learning module, Foundations of Finance, to introduce students to fundamentals of personal finance, such as saving, applying for student loans and buying a car, among other features. Getting To The Heart Of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
E
ven a fit and healthy professional athlete can suffer from sudden cardiac arrest—but a look at Olympic skater Paul Wylie’s story may help to shed some light on what you need to know about the latest advancements in implantable heart devices that protect against sudden cardiac arrest and treat other irregular heart rhythms.
which continuously monitors his heart. If a dangerous and potentially lifethreatening heart rate is detected, the ICD sends a lifesaving electrical signal to correct it.
In 1992, Wylie won the silver medal in men’s figure skating at the Winter Olympic Games. After the Olympics, he joined the professional skating ranks, winning the 1992 U.S. Open Professional Championship and the 1993 World Professional Figure Skating Championships; he then toured with Stars on Ice for six years before retiring.
Wylie is now feeling great and recovering nicely. He is skating and coaching regularly, while hitting the gym and running again. However, he is not able to get an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan. Due to the potential harmful interactions between the magnet field and his implanted heart device, he is not able to have this important diagnostic scan that helps to diagnose various conditions including stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and muscle, bone and joint pain.
Today, at 52, Wylie remains an avid skater, skier and runner, and continues coaching and performing. But in April 2015, he collapsed suddenly while running with friends. Luckily, one of his workout partners started CPR immediately.
“I worry because I am so active and have had MRIs in the past, so I know this could become an issue in the future,” said Wylie. “I think it’s important that people know to ask their doctor about heart devices that are MR-conditional, meaning they can allow for MRI screening.”
Upon arrival, paramedics were able to resuscitate him. He was then put into a medically induced coma for several days. Wylie was shocked when he woke and learned that he had suffered sudden cardiac arrest, an abrupt loss of heart function that can result in death if not treated within minutes. In fact, approximately 95 percent of sudden cardiac arrest cases are fatal, claiming more than 450,000 lives annually in the U.S.
When he is ready for his next device, Wylie won’t have to decide between the lifesaving protection he gets from his ICD and the option to have an MRI scan. The U.S. FDA recently approved an entire suite of implantable cardiac devices by Medtronic that allow for MRI scans in both 1.5 or 3 Tesla machines. These devices include pacemakers, ICDs, insertable cardiac monitors and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators.
“Once I was conscious, it took days to get my head around the fact that I was so close to death—in fact, that I had died—and just how fortunate I felt to have had the circumstances be what they were,” said Wylie.
While February is Heart Month, any time is a good time to learn more about newly available implantable cardiac devices. If you or a loved one is evaluating a recommendation from a doctor to receive an implantable heart device, consider asking if it has been approved for use in MRI scans.
After surviving sudden cardiac arrest, Wylie knew he had to look at ways to avoid another episode in the future. After researching options, he chose a device called an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD),

Many Working Mothers Can’t Afford Their Health Insurance Deductibles

Homeschooling—The Original School Choice
W
hile many families are considering area schools for their children, an increasing number of families are opting to homeschool their children. Since its rebirth in the 1970s, homeschooling has rapidly grown. Currently, more than 2.3 million students are involved in K−12 home education. More than 2,000 homeschool groups across the country are participating in National School Choice Week 2017 this week, highlighting an educational option that has been effective for their children and families.
“All parents want to provide the best education for their children, and for many families, that means homeschooling,” said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week. “The time management and academic initiative that many homeschoolers develop set them up very well for further education and a career.” Homeschool students participate in a variety of social activities, with their homeschool groups, churches, scouts, 4-H, sports teams, and art or music programs.
