According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults have an average of two to three colds a year, and children have even more. And when one family member catches a cold, it’s likely the rest of the family will follow suit. While there’s no universal cure for a cold, there are ways to help you feel comforted while you’re sick. Put on your softest PJs, snuggle under the covers and read these tips for staying comfortable this cold and flu season: • Stay hydrated. Water, juice, clear broth, warm apple juice or warm lemon water with honey can help loosen congestion and prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which can further dehydrate you when you’re sick. • Soothe a sore nose. Six-Point Vehicle Check: A Gift That Keeps On Giving

A

six-point vehicle check is a gift that will keep on giving, both in better vehicle performance and fewer unexpected repairs, says the Car Care Council. “Why not wrap up the holiday season with a gift for you and your car? Inspecting six key systems ahead of time can save you the headaches and cost of an emergency breakdown later,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Regular vehicle maintenance is always more convenient when you’re doing it on your own schedule. By taking a few easy preventive maintenance steps now, you can have more confidence when driving in severe winter weather.” The Car Care Council recommends this vehicle check: 1. Battery—Keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosionfree. Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it is advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze—Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however, as full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water.

Wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield should be replaced. Some manufacturers offer special winter blades that have a rubber boot covering the arm assembly to keep snow and ice out. When changing the blades, have the windshield wiper system nozzles cleaned and adjusted if necessary, and check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir. During the cold months, keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full as that decreases the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Finally, if you’re due for a tune-up, consider having it done soon. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important when driving on icy or snowcovered roads.

oday, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to

replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Take Steps To Improve Your Retirement Confidence

This dismal view of their retirement prospects by so many aging Americans is concerning, but what is even more sobering is the study found that boomers are actually less satisfied with their finances than they were as recently as five years ago. In 2012, 41 percent of baby boomers believed they were doing a good job of financial preparation. This decline in retirement confidence has taken place in spite of healthy market conditions and rising interest rates for most retirees’ investments. Fortunately, the news doesn’t have to be so bad if seniors allow this news to serve as a wake-up call for them to take action. Here are five steps that experts say boomers can take to revisit their retirement plans now and fix things that have gone awry: 1. Reassess priorities. Take stock of your available resources and prioritize your needs vs. your wants, based on where your life is now and what is most important to you in the years ahead. 2. Raise cash. Consider options that may be available to you for boosting your savings, such as a part-time job or perhaps selling off some possessions 63¢ / line for first week

3. Generate interest. Re-evaluate where your money is sitting today and consider moving as much as you can out of cash and into interest-bearing accounts, which are paying depositors more than they have in several years. 4. Look for hidden assets. Inventory all your assets that might create cash flow, including those you may have overlooked in the past, such as a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is your personal property and, if you no longer need or can afford it, you may be able to sell it for an immediate cash payment. 5. Leverage your house. If you own your home, consider a reverse mortgage or a home equity line of credit as a way to free up cash that you can use to pay off health care bills or other expenses. Of these five steps, the one that could produce the most immediate cash flow may be the sale of a life insurance policy, known as a life settlement. Most consumers who qualify for a life settlement are 70 or older and own a life insurance policy with a benefit of at least $100,000.
