Four Tips For Better Managing Your Retirement Budget

recent survey by Ameriprise Financial found that 68 percent of retirees with at least $100,000 in assets have not yet taken money out of their savings, beyond what they must withdraw as part of the IRS’ required mini-mum distributions from their retirement accounts. It turns out that the transition from saving money to living off of those assets is much tougher for seniors to navigate than many realized. The Ameriprise survey found that just one in five seniors say they feel “confident” about how to draw down their retirement savings, leaving them fraught with uncertainty about how to manage their budgets. When you sell a policy— something called a “life settlement” transaction— you get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000.

1. Revisit your monthly expenses. Many people do a good job of tracking their spending in their preretirement years and establishing projections for what they anticipate they will spend in retirement. A common approach to the asset withdrawal phase of retirement is to establish a “bucket strategy.” This approach involves breaking your nest egg into three buckets: (1) The Cash Bucket (one to three years of short-term income); (2) The Income Bucket (five to eight years of medium-term income); and (3) The Growth Bucket (10+ years of long-term income). As each of the first two buckets gets low on dollars, you replenish them with assets from the others. This helps you achieve stability in your cash flow and increases peace of mind.

Amateur Athletes Seek Non-Opioid Pain Relief

T

hey may not make those “Agony of Defeat” sports reels, but amateur athletes get injured all the time. Maybe it’s from an awkward golf swing. Or maybe it’s from not warming up or stretching before an event. Whatever the cause, though, there’s one scary thing they have in common with the pros. “The reality is that all athletes are one fall, twist, or tweak away from landing their own opioid prescription,” Outside magazine warned. The warning couldn’t be better timed. It’s not just that the country is in the midst of an opioid crisis that’s claimed the lives of thousands of prescription painkiller abusers and left countless more addicted to the likes of OxyContin. It’s also that -- as the magazine also noted -- physicians seem to be starting to heed last year’s urging by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to dramatically curtail prescribing the drugs. According to a survey conducted for the Boston Globe by the SERMO physicians social network, more than half of doctors across America are

doing exactly that, and nearly one in 10 have completely stopped prescribing them. So what’s an amateur athlete suffering from pain supposed to do? One especially popular alternative is drug-free chiropractic care. Whereas opioids (and Ibuprofen forms of over-the-counter drugs) only “mask” the pain, doctors of chiropractic approach the problem highly educated and trained in the structure and function of the human body. How Dangerous Are Pesticides That We Routinely Use By Bugman

Q

uestion! If you had four glasses of liquid in front of you and one glass was filled with highly toxic liquid, one with moderately toxic liquid, one with least toxic liquid and one filled with non-toxic liquid, which one would you drink? I think that is an easy question. Another question! If you have pests you want to control, which would you prefer to have your family and pets exposed to, highly toxic pesticides (Danger label), moderately toxic pesticides (Warning label), least toxic pesticides (Caution label) or non-toxic pesticides (EPA Exempt)? The answer should be the same as the first question, but almost every pest control company uses moderately toxic or least toxic pesticides in and around homes and very few, if any use non-toxic pesticides. I am posting this because it is important if you have children or if you are pregnant or plan on having a family. How dangerous are pesticides that we routinely use in our homes, schools, businesses, medical facilities and other places? Pesticides commonly used in homes and outside can be very hazardous. Synthetic pesticides, which are used by many pest control companies can cause pregnant women to have autistic children and can cause children to develop serious problems. Children are three to seven times more likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma when exposed to pesticides than children who are not exposed. They are also more likely to develop leukemia than children who are not exposed. Pesticide exposure has been linked to fetal death, miscarriages, long term infertility, male infertility and brain damage during pregnancy. A study has shown that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may be caused by damage to neurotransmitters in the frontal lobe of the brain by pesticides. Parkinson’s disease has been associated with pesticides and other environmental toxins according to some epidemiological studies. . Active ingredients are the only components of the pesticide listed on the label. These are the chemicals that kill and repel the pests. Active ingredients also contain synergists, such as piperonyl butoxide (PBO) to help the pesticide work more effectively. Piperonyl butoxide, a very commonly used synergist, can be toxic to the liver and is a possible human carcinogen. Pesticides that contain pyrethrin and pyrethroids are pesticide products that most often use piperonyl butoxide.

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) only requires manufacturers to list the active ingredients on the label. They allow the “inert” ingredients to be a trade secret leaving the consumer and the applicator unaware of the possible danger they are exposed to. Many inert ingredients are considered to be “hazardous pollutants”, “extremely hazardous”, “suspected carcinogens” and “occupational hazards.” You have better options. You can require the pest control company to only use EPA Exempt pesticides, which are considered safe by the EPA and are not registered with a Signal Word (Caution, Warning, Danger). Caution may be the least toxic pesticide, but it is still toxic. Not everyone is affected by toxic pesticides, but some people certainly are and why take the chance with your children. Another option is to require the pest company to follow the Precautionary Principle Philosophy, which basically states that pesticides can only be used if a pest infestation is present, and cannot be generically sprayed in and around your home on a regular basis. Also, have the pest control company sign an agreement that their pesticide is safe, and that they will be financially responsible for all medical and veterinary bills that may occur because of the pesticides if they won’t use EPA Exempt pesticides. Your best option is to control any pests you have yourself. In the majority of cases, you can do this without using toxic pesticides and spending a lot of money. In most cases you can control Cockroaches (beer and duct tape), Ants (peanut butter and jelly, grits, Coca Cola), Earwigs (newspaper). Silverfish (baby food jars and flour) Paper wasps (brown paper bags, Avon Skin so Soft), Bed bugs (alcohol, water & dish soap, hair dryer), Head lice (salt water, hair dryer), Fungus gnats (aquarium gravel), Fruit flies (vinegar) Carpet beetles (dirty socks and cheese), Spiders (peppermint essential oil) and almost all pests (soap, water and dish soap). There are many others and there are exceptions including termites. But for the most part you can control pests safely and effectively. Spread apple/onion mix evenly across pork and gently roll back into a cylinder, tying with kitchen string as needed; place in baking pan. In a small bowl, whisk together cider, mustard and oil until combined; smear all over exterior of pork loin. Place in oven and cook until center reads at 145° with a thermometer; remove and let stand for 10 minutes before carving. Look no further than the Florida couple who last year decided to have their house painted to look like artist Vincent Van Gogh’s famous canvas “The Starry Night.” It wasn’t just that it was such an odd choice for an exterior that it attracted tourists - sort of the local answer to New York’s Madame Tussauds - it was that the city of Mount Dora took them to court over it. “Graffiti,” the city called it. “First Amendment!” countered homeowner Lubek Jastrzebski, an immigrant from Communist-era Poland, who argued that the city code didn’t address house colors and aesthetics. Yes, that’s an extreme example of unintended consequences. But even though legally the homeowners wound up off the hook, anyone now contemplating shelling out significant bucks on home improvements should read on for some tips on avoiding costly missteps. * Don’t paint your house brown either. Since most people have it in the back of their minds that they’ll eventually want to attract buyers other than those obsessed with Dutch post-impressionist painters partial to yellow and blue swirls, know that Zillow.com just concluded that medium brown and taupe were the worst exterior color choices in terms of resale value. Both depressed the sales price by $1,970 compared to homes painted white, an analysis by the real estate website of more than 32,000 photos from sold residential properties around the country found. “Greige,” on the other hand - a combination of gray and beige - was the big winner, fetching $3,496 more than its drab brown counterparts. * Tech is your friend. It was two years ago that a noted design guru had this to say to the New York Times about online virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D rendering tools: “It’s definitely the wave of the future, because it allows the general population

to make design decisions without feeling hesitant or insecure,” said Khoi Vo, a professor and the chair of the department of interior design at Savannah College of Art and Design. Well, the future is undoubtedly here, with programs like Room Sketcher even allowing you to play architect by creating your own floor plan, furnishing the space, and then visualizing your work in 3D. But say what you’re interested in is boosting your home’s all-important curb appeal with a roof upgrade. A Beloved Dog, A Stolen Car And...A Happy Ending

I

t started out as a normal day for Mary Harrison—until she briefly left her car running outside of her home with her shih tzu Molly in the backseat and went inside for just a second.

“I knew with Hum there was a lot we could do to help her. I pulled up the step-by-step troubleshooting guide to reset her password and bring up the vehicle’s location on her phone. As soon as she saw the car on her phone, she started to cry.”
