BE PREPARED

NOTICE Earlier this year we were hit with an unexpected virus that has been spreading chaos and disease throughout our country. We must all do our part by following quarantine guidelines and helping to flatten the curve. Only by practicing good health habits and continuing to exercise social distancing will we overcome COVID-19.

These unprecedented times may cause fear and anxiety, but we must have hope that we will get through this. It is thanks to the many essential workers in Hudson County that we can and we will! We also cannot forget to express our appreciation to those in the medical field for their part in helping people survive the coronavirus. Together, this too, shall pass.

While the office is closed until further notice, our staff will do their best to address concerns regarding our services. Our staff will have access to voice and email for emergency situations. Please check the website periodically for new updates.

Stay Informed With the Latest on the Coronavirus The new strain of Coronavirus, a disease of the respiratory system, is rapidly spreading. In the midst of this crisis it is important to know some facts about this novel Coronavirus.

• People of all ages can become infected; however, there is special attention to those with a preexisting medical condition such as heart and lung disease.

• People who become infected experience mild illness and eventually recover (most can recover at home).

• The virus spreads from person-to-person contact, with an incubation period of up to 14 days. On average, symptoms begin to show on day 5.

Remember that this disease is a virus, not bacteria.

Therefore, antibiotic methods are not the sole or most efficient form of treatment or prevention.

★Valiant Women of the Vote ★ On February 9th 1920, New Jersey became the 29th state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment. The amendment changed the constitution to allow women the right to vote. After Tennessee became the 36th state to support the change in August of 1920, women’s fight to obtain the rights and responsibilities of men came to a conclusion. 2020 calls for the celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

Although the fight for equal rights is not over, this year we celebrate this milestone in our democracy and continue to strive towards equality.

As Alice Paul declared in a 1921 issue of The Suffragette, “There is a danger that because of a great victory, women will believe their whole struggle for independence ended. They still have far to go.”

To honor this historical anniversary, the County Clerk wants to show his appreciation to the hardworking, dedicated and diligent women of the County Clerk’s Office by including them on this issue of the Clerk’s Corner.

Mary Teresa Norton First Democratic woman freeholder to the Hudson County Board of Freeholders in 1923

Marie Garibaldi First woman appointed to the State Supreme Court in 1982

Explore New Jersey New Jersey was the home of many talented and visionary women that paved the path for the future wellbeing and representation of women. There are a number of locations open to the public to experience the historical home of one of these revolutionary women.

At the Alice Paul Institute, a national historic landmark, you can tour the family home of suffragette Alice Paul, in Paulsdale. You can also schedule to view the Irvine Library, which holds Alice Paul Archives and a small women’s history collection.

If you want to experience multiple places for some weekend fun, check out the Women’s Heritage Trail. It is a self-guided tour that lists multiple estates and landmarks allowing you to choose the locations you and your family wish to visit. In Hudson County, the trail invites you to visit the home of Jersey City native, Mary Norton and Enid Bell’s “Children Reading” statue in Union City.

Did you know?

New Jersey State Legislature allowed single women and African American men to cast their vote in the late 1700s. However, in 1807, this right was restricted in fear of the DemocraticRepublican Party losing the 1808 election to the Federalist Party.

HCCC Latino Community Networking Reception Feb. 13, 2020 County Clerk Junior Maldonado and HCCC President Chris Reber at the networking reception where the community was informed of all of the scholarships and programs available for Spring 2020.

2020 Bayonne St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Annual Brunch Feb. 23, 2020 Deputy Clerk, Diane Liming, was recognized as this year’s Grand Marshal for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which celebrates Bayonne’s Irish community and Ireland’s patron saint.

2020 Census The census is a count of everyone living in the country regardless of race, age and citizenship status. The census count is performed every ten years to determine the size of the entire population, not the number of citizens in the population. The census will not ask for citizenship status, religious beliefs, or social security numbers. It is important to understand that if there is an undercount in the population, our community risks losing a portion of the $687 billion available for federal funding.

The Latino Community is the nation’s largest racial/ethnic minority group. However, Latinos have the highest rate of undercounted residents.

Language barriers and immigration status are characteristics that make this community difficult to count. This undercount creates a negative impact on the community as it affects the federal funding on 16 assistance programs such as Medicaid, Section 8 Housing, WIC, etc. An undercount affects legislature by reflecting an incorrect boundary for electoral districts leading to political misrepresentation. In 2010, NJ lost a representative in the House, decreasing our voice in Congress.

This year the census questionnaire is offered in multiple languages, with the availability to submit a response via multiple outlets. It is important that everyone participates.

April brings the closing of the early response for the 2020 Census Surveys. Please respond as soon as possible!

This year responding is even more convenient as you can answer the questionnaire online, by phone or by mail.

If you did not already respond, do not fear!

Throughout May, Census Workers will begin the Nonresponse follow-ups.
