We are thrilled you want to start your career in health care at the HCC Health Sciences Center of Excellence. Unlike other HCC colleges, enrolling at HCC Health Sciences Center of Excellence is a competitive and selective process. Some programs require successful completion of courses before you are permitted to apply for admission. Not all programs admit all the applicants they receive. Additionally, some programs accept one class per year, while others admit two. You can see there are a lot of details involved in choosing the best program for you. That is why we want to get to know you better and ask you to visit our campus in person prior to applying for admission.

There is one common element to every student’s application: you must be a Houston Community College student at the time you apply for admission to the Health Sciences Center of Excellence. Find the application to HCC at hccs.edu/apply. Once you have completed the HCC application, or if you already have an HCC student identification number, visit the HCC Health Sciences Center of Excellence at hccs.edu/health to begin your health science application process. If you have questions, contact us at coleman.advising@hccs.edu. Welcome to the first step in your health care career. The HCC Health Sciences Center of Excellence will be with you every step of the way.

C E R T I F I C AT E A S S O C I AT E D E G R E E

Histology is a science dealing with the structure of cells and their formation into tissues and organs. Histotechnology centers on the detection of tissue abnormalities and the treatment for the diseases causing the abnormalities.

A C C R E D I TAT I O N A G E N C Y National Accrediting Agency For Clinical Laboratory Scientists (NAALS) WHERE WILL I WORK? Hospitals, reference, research, forensic, physicians’ office laboratories, pharmaceutical companies or biotechnology companies

Dyes and chemicals are used in histology. It is important to know their composition, how they act, and how they react with each other. With this knowledge, combined with an understanding of tissue composition, the histotechnician treats the tissue with these chemicals and dyes. The chemical reactions produce colors, which make it possible to distinguish tissue structures. In the modern histology lab immunological and molecular (DNA) techniques are frequently utilized to provide accurate tumor identification which will aid the clinician in selecting a mode of therapy that offers the greatest probability of cure.

Pharmacy Technicians assist the pharmacist with the technical duties associated with the preparation and distribution of medications. Pharmacy Technicians always work under the direct supervision of and are responsible to a licensed pharmacist. All work performed by a pharmacy technician must be verified for accuracy by a licensed pharmacist. The practice of pharmacy is continually changing to meet the needs of society. As a result, the pharmacy technician’s role is also changing. Pharmacy Technicians are being relied upon more and more to perform the routine day-to-day functions which free the pharmacist to spend more time providing clinical support to the patient and other healthcare team members. Therefore, educated, highly skilled and well trained pharmacy technicians are essential to the successful function of the pharmacy.
